Jane gets a call on her BPD phone. It's Korsack. "Jane, we have something. I'm putting a call thru to you now."
"Hey, Vanilla. I got something for you. It's about your Doctor. I had a guy come to me this morning. He knocked me out and left me a note."
"Knocked you out Rondo? You okay?"
"Yeah, you know me Vanilla. Rondo is always good. The note said, 'Tell your detective that she didn't drop the ball, but she better figure this out or she is going to keep chasing her tail. The doctor is safe. For now.' What can I do to help Vanilla? The Doctor is your friend. Let me know."
"Rondo, thanks. Keep us posted if you get anything else. Get yourself checked out. I'll get the department to cover it. Talk to Korsack."
"Okay, Korsack here is where we're at. Captain Benson and I are in Times Square. We're checking out a few things. She thinks that maybe tail is the clue not chase. We're looking at the markings around removed signs and window decals. Just trying to see what we can find. Her team is running down things at the Precinct. I'll check in later."
"Vanilla?", asks Olivia.
Jane laughs, "Yeah, he's my CI. The nickname, it's a long story."
Jane's other phone rings. "Hey, ma. I've got you on speaker. I'm with Captain Benson in Times Square."
"Janie. I'm worried. Maura is like a second daughter to me. You know that. I'm worried that you'll be killed too."
"Ma. I'm okay. Captain Benson is the best in NY. We're working a few things while her team is working some others."
"Mrs Rizzoli, this is Captain Benson. We're going to find Dr. Isles and I'll do everything I can to keep your daughter safe."
"Thank you Captain Benson. I want my daughters back home safe."
"I'll talk to you tonight, Ma. I'm starting to worry. Rondo did get another clue. I just talked to him. I'll keep you posted."
"Okay, Janie. I love you."
"I love you too, Ma."
"Your mother seems to be very caring."
"She can be smothering, but she really does care. Maura gave her a place to live after my Pop left her. Maura let her live in her guest house. We're all very close. Do you have a close relationship with your mother?"
"No. My mother was an alcoholic. She raised me on her own. I was a product of rape and she never fully recovered from that. She died several years ago after falling down some stairs."
"Olivia, I'm so sorry. I can tell you now that my Ma would take you in like a daughter too. You need to come visit Boston."
"Hey, look over here. There is a partial sticker. There's a lot of dust around the part that came off. Let me call this one in and see what we can find out."
"Benson, you do that and I'll go around back."
"Jane, don't do that. I'm coming with you."
Benson calls Finn and they get all the information they can on the former shop. Jane and Olivia go down the alley and get to the back door. The same time Finn calls back they get to the door of the closed shop. The sticker on the back door matches what Finn tells them. It's a former gift shop for cat lovers, Chasin' Your Tail. They both draw their weapons and enter thru the unlocked door. The space is completely empty. There is nowhere to hide. They find a message on the wall, 'Jane, you're late. You've reached ground zero. Dr. Isles is glowing. Catch me if you can.' The message appears to be written in blood. There is also a shoe there. Jane knows it's one of Maura's one of a kind Stuart Weitzman shoes.
"Olivia, she's been here. This is her shoe. She's a bit of a fashionista, those are outrageously expensive. There is no way that Hoyt can get one of those without having Maura. Can we get CSRU in here to dust and check and see if this is blood?"
Benson gets on the radio and calls it in. Her team shows up on the scene.
CSRU is given very strict instructions to get this evidence processed immediately.
Jane calls Korsack. "They are definitely here. We found one of her shoes. You know, one of those expensive ones. Hoyt can't get one of those without her. There was a new message scrawled on the wall. It looks like it was written in blood. CSRU is working the scene now. I'm going to send you a picture of the message and her shoe. I'll talk to you later. Vince, I'm scared."
"Jane, I know. You'll find her. She means more to you than you want to admit. She's important to all of us."
"Yeah Korsack. I know. Talk to you soon."
"Detective Rizzoli, there are lights all around Ground Zero at night. The lights cause a glow effect. Do you think he'd hide her around there?"
"Kat, that's a good thought. We need to go down there and see what we can find. I don't think he'll be there now. It's still daylight and she won't be glowing yet. I wish he left a clue about where he is now. Maybe we need to go down there and scout it out. He really wants me."
"Detective Rizzoli, it's going to be cold tonight, we really need to find her tonight."
"You're right Rollins. This can't go on any longer."
"Can you guys take me down there now and then we can go back to the Precinct to make a plan?"
"Captain, I'm going to take Detective Rizzoli to Ground Zero. Then we'll meet you back at the station."
"Thanks, Kat. See you in about an hour?"
"Yes, ma'am."
Jane and Kat arrive at Ground Zero. Jane is taken aback a bit. There is so much to think about. This would be the perfect place for Hoyt to kill both she and Maura. He thrives on hidden messages and symbolism. Kat sees a look in Jane's eyes and decides not to interrupt her right now. Jane walks to a nearby ledge and takes a seat. She hangs her head. Leaning on her legs. She's tired. She's worried. She's pissed. She just wants Maura back. Killing Hoyt right now would be a bonus. As she sits there Kat looks around to see if there is a place that might be good to hide a body.
A panhandler is passing in front of Jane. She doesn't really pay any attention to him until he drops something at her feet. It's the end of a burned out road flare. As soon as she looks up to see the person he takes off. Jane jumps into pursuit. Kat sees what's going on and is approaching from the other side. Out of nowhere, there is Finn. He drops the guy quickly. Kat and Jane didn't even know that Finn was there. They cuff the guy and toss him into the back of Finn's car.
Jane looks at Finn, with that Rizzoli look in her eye and a slight smile and just says, "Nice."
