"That was a good movie. They could never have someone like Mickey Rooney play Mr. Yunioshi today. That was just awful. Oh, and did I hear Fred Flintstone at one point?"
"Fred who?"
"Flintstone, you know, Yabba Dabba Doo. Fred Flintstone?"
Maura looks at Jane with a questioning look on her face.
"The cartoon Maura, The Flintstones?"
"I'm not familiar..."
"Oh, we'll have to watch some episodes. I loved it as a kid. They did a play on famous names like, his boss was Mr. Slate. There were celebrities Ann-Margrock, Stony Curtis. I'll watch some cartoons with you. It'll be fun. What time is it?"
"Its 2 o'clock. We have 5 hours before people will be here. What would you like to do?"
"Well, I was thinking a nap or something. Did you have anything that you needed to do?"
"Nope. I figured we could start prepping for tonight around 6 or so. Ma will probably be here early anyway." Jane sets an alarm for 5:30, just in case they do sleep that long.
"Then let's take a nap. I'm not a nap person but I guess my body thinks I need it. Will you carry me to bed?"
"Yes, ma'am, I will. It'll be my pleasure", Jane says with a grin. She picks Maura up and takes her to the bedroom. She sets her on the bed and takes her shoe off of her. "Need anything?"
"Just you beside me." Jane helps Maura move so she can lay down, then takes her shoes off and lays next to Maura. Maura reaches over for Jane's arm and places it over her hip. Jane moves so that she's as close to Maura as she can get.
Jane wakes up to a gentle touch on her shoulder. It startles her but she doesn't jump like she normally would for some reason. It's Angela.
Jane gets up, "Ma, what time is it?" They walk out of the bedroom, closing the door behind them.
"It's 5 o'clock. I came to help get things ready. You don't have to get up. I was checking on you. When I came in it was so quiet, but I knew you were here. The bedroom door was open. You two looked so sweet laying there together. I thought it might be better to wake you then to have you hear me out here."
"Yeah, you're right. That probably would have scared me, especially these days. I'm still a little on edge from this latest adventure."
Angela hugs her daughter. "I know Janie. It was rough. We were all worried about Maura. I know I'm grateful that you found her."
"Me too, Ma. So, can we talk?"
"As long as we can talk while I make potato salad."
"Oh, good. I was going to ask if you'd make some, but I forgot to call. So, I have a question for you. I know that you've always tried to fix me up with guys you meet and even try to fix me up with guys from the neighborhood. I know that me being with a woman is not something you pictured. Is it really okay with you?"
"Jane, I gotta tell ya, it's an adjustment. When you told me I was shocked. I didn't know what to think. But then I realized that no matter what, you're my daughter. I raised you to be a good, caring and loving person. You are exactly that. Hearing this over the phone last week was rough, but I appreciate that you told me before you came home. I love Maura like my own, so that helps. If it was any other woman, I can't say that I'd be okay with it. Seeing the two of you these last couple of days, nothing much has changed between you. You've always been loving towards one another. You've just added some additional touches and some kisses. It's sweet though. I can see the happiness and love in both your faces. That should be all a mother needs, happiness and love for her child. Has she talked to Constance or Hope yet?"
"No. You know she doesn't talk to them often anyway. We kept her kidnapping out of the press, so neither found out that way. I am not going to press her about it. She'll tell them what she wants, when she wants. I'll be by her to support her when she does. As far as I know, they both like me anyway, so hopefully it won't be a big deal, but who knows."
"Janie, you're a sweet girl. Maura is lucky."
"No, Ma, I'm lucky. She's amazing"
"Okay, so, about tonight. Grilling?
"Yeah. Burgers and dogs and the works. We need to cut tomatoes and onions and stuff. Hey. I'm going to go wake up Maur. I'll be right back." Jane walk towards the bedroom, but stops and looks over her shoulder, "Hey, Ma, I love you. Thank you."
"Your don't need to thank me baby. I'm your mother. I love you too."
Jane quietly opens the door. Maura is still asleep. She walks over to the bed and kneels beside it. She lightly touches Maura's shoulder, "Hey my beautiful girl, it's time to wake up."
Maura grumbles a bit. "Am I wearing off on you?", Jane asks with a giggle.
Sleepily Maura asks, "What time is it?"
"It's about 6 o'clock. Ma is here. I let you sleep."
"You're so good to me. What did I do to deserve you?"
"By just being you. That's all it took."
Jane leans in and kisses Maura.
"Will you help me up, please?"
Jane helps Maura sit up. Maura has an irritated look on her face. "What's wrong Maura?", Jane asks very concerned.
"I want to be able to walk. I want to be able to touch you with both of my hands. I want to run all of my fingers thru your hair. I want to be normal again."
"Oh, sweetheart, you will be, soon. I promise. You know, just as well as I do, your body needs to heal. I know it's a pain in the ass, but I'm not going anywhere. I'm here. I always will be."
"I know you will. I never thought that we'd be where we are and I wouldn't be able to touch you. I'm just frustrated."
"I know you are. It's okay. I love you. I love you more today than I did yesterday and more than the day before."
"Oh, Jane. Who would have ever thought that badass Jane Rizzoli would be a sappy romantic?"
"Hey, don't tell anyone, especially my mother."
"Oh, alright. I won't. It'll be our secret."
Jane helps Maura up and takes her to the bathroom. A few minutes later Jane carries Maura to the kitchen.
"Wow, Maura, look at you, being carried around. How romantic.", Angela says smiling.
"The wheelchair is too much. Jane has been getting a good upper body workout in everyday. She carries me places. I kinda like it."
Angela and Maura laugh at the thought of Jane carrying Maura everywhere.
"Well, on that note, I'm going to put together this knee scooter. You two can get the rest of the stuff prepped for tonight."
Angela takes a knife and cutting board to the table for Maura. She starts cutting onion, rings and diced. Then the tomatoes. She loves helping with Rizzoli family food prep. Even though this isn't Sunday dinner, the same people will be here, plus a few extra. Just as they all finish with what they are doing Frankie, Nina and Tommy walk thru the door. Maura smiles. This is her family. Her cop family.
