Chapter 3

October 31, 1979, New York City

The final bell of the day is always a relief to hear for the kids at school and Naruto was no exception. The teacher was telling all the students as they walked out the door to remember their homework is due on monday, but Naruto didn't pay him any attention. He had already finished most of his work earlier when he had free time.

Right now he was busy trying to find Rebecca in the hallway. He had to look around for a moment through the excited crowd before he found her and once they greeted each other they walked towards the front doors to leave and to board the bus home. This had been their routine since she started going back to school with him two weeks ago.

The talk Naruto had with his parents went over well for the both of them. His parents had been surprised by the request, but they understood the young girl's situation. After the two adults talked with the kids that afternoon they promised that they would try to help her. Minato and Kushina spoke with the school the next day on the phone to try to get Rebecca back in.

The both of them spent a long time on the phone, but they were able to come to an agreement with the school. Rebecca was set to come back to school after the phone call, but she had to make up for the missed time by going to summer school next year.

Rebecca knew that going back wouldn't be easy, but she was pleasantly surprised that all it took was for her to go to summer school. She was happy to take the deal. Two weeks have gone by since she came back and luckily she hadn't had any problems besides catching up on the curriculum. Naruto was more than happy to help her each night after school when she had trouble with something.

Once Naruto and Rebecca found their bus they both shuffled their way onto it and found their usual empty seats.

"Ugh Mr. Barnes is such a jerk. He gave us that stupid report on Macbeth and told us it was due Monday" Rebecca groaned out in frustration as she sat down by the window. Naurto sighed after hearing this because it reminded him of the one bit of homework that he couldn't finish today.

"Yeah well it shouldn't be too bad. At least we can work on it together unlike the others'' Naruto tried to reassure her as he sat down next to her.

"Yeah but it's such a pain. How can anybody understand that damn book? The way they speak is so frustrating.'' She complained some more to Naruto's amusement.

Mr. Barnes had given the class a sheet that detailed what each old English word meant in relation to today's English, but Rebecca still found the whole thing pointless. She didn't see how learning about this old fictional story would help her make a living in the future and she made sure to voice her displeasure.

"I know you don't like it and I don't either, but it's the assignment, so we have to do it. Just make sure not to put it off until the night before like last time" Naruto repremanded her. Rebecca had a bad tendency to put off homework until the last minute. He didn't mind helping her, but he really wished she wouldn't wait so long to do it.

"Yeah, Yeah, I know. I promise" Rebecca promised him with a sigh while closing her eyes as she rested her head on the back of their seat.

"We can do it tomorrow evening after dinner. How does that sound?" Naruto asked her. She shrugged at his suggestion showing that she was fine with it. To be honest Rebecca was more interested in talking about something else besides homework.

"So what exactly is it that your parents have planned for tonight?" Rebecca asked him after she opened her eyes.

"I'm not exactly sure, but I have an idea and if I'm right then it's nothing good" Naruto answered her vaguely with a sense of dread. Rebecca raised an eyebrow confused by what he was saying. She was about to ask him what he meant by that, but their bus came to their stop.

The two teenagers stood up with their backpacks and made their way off the bus. Naruto's parents told the two of them earlier this week that they had a surprise for both of them today.

Rebecca was excited to see what the surprise was, but Naruto knew his parents. Minato and Kushina's surprises usually ended up with him embarrassed and he had a feeling that he wasn't going to like this either.

Rebecca asked him to wait outside her door once they made it to their floor. She had to go put her backpack in her room before she went over to Naruto's place. Thankfully her father wasn't home and she didn't have to talk to him. She made sure she had her key after putting her backpack up and walked back out her front door to Naruto.

"Are you ready for this?" Naruto asked her with trepidation once she made it back.

Rebecca rolled her eyes after he said that. "I'm sure whatever it is isn't that bad. You need to have a little faith" she said to him. They both walked to his door and Naruto grabbed the knob to open it.

"You dont know them like I do," Naruto explained to her with a resigned tone.

Naruto opened the door to the sound of two people laughing. It sounded like it was his parents and it was coming from the kitchen. Naruto and Rebecca stepped in, and shut the door, but not before calling out to let Naruto's parents know they were home.

"Hey you two. c'mon in here and look at what I've got for you" they heard Kushina say. They both could hear the excitement in her voice when she addressed them.

Naruto and Rebecca glanced at each other, curious about what she had in store. They headed for the kitchen to see what she wanted, maybe it had something to do with what the surprise was tonight.

The two of them found Minato sitting in his usual spot at the head of the table and Kushina standing over it while putting the finishing touches on some clothes it had looked like she had sown.

"So how was school today? Anything interesting happen?" Kushina asked them with a smile.

"Not really. Mr. Barnes said that a report on Macbeth is due Monday, but that was it." Rebecca answered before Naruto could ask what the clothes were for.

"Oof, I remember having to do Macbeth, that was tough for me, and Hamlet too" Minato told them with a grimace. Rebecca opened her mouth to say something else regarding their homework, but Naruto interrupted her.

"So what's the clothes for Mom?" He questioned her. Naruto's eyes were narrowed in suspicion as he looked at his mother. Kushina looked up from her sewing and saw the suspicion in her son's eyes, she couldn't help but grin.

The idea that Kushina came up with for tonight had been to go Trick or Treating with Naruto and Rebecca. She had talked to Minato about it a few weeks ago and he liked the idea. The only problem they had was having free time to do this with the kids.

Minato had the idea to ask a classmate of his to copy tonight's lecture down for him. Luckily the guy he asked was ok with it as long as Minato did the same for him one day when he wanted to skip too. It was easy for Kushina though, all she had to do was call in sick for tonight, and Minato made sure to back up her story when he had to work his shift.

Their work kept them from spending time with their son and they hated that. Weekends were the only time they could spend time with him. Now that Naruto and Rebecca were pretty much inseparable they wanted to be able to let them go out and have a good time.

Minato hid a grin behind his coffee cup as his wife stood up because he knew he was going to enjoy his son's reaction. Kushina grabbed the clothes from the table and held them up for the kids to see.

Naruto and Rebecca saw the clothes and slowly realized what their plans were for tonight. To their horror the clothes were near identical copies of Han Solo's, and Princess Leia's outfits from the Star Wars movie that came out a few years ago. Kushina did a good job sewing the clothes together from some material she got from a friend at work.

"Well what do you guys think?" Kushina asked the pair in barely contained excitement.

"I think you did an excellent job honey" Minato complimented his wife. The man had a grin on his face that Naruto could tell was full of amusement.

Rebecca was still staring at the outfits in shock. She didn't think this would be what the surprise was and she realized that Naruto was right. She turned to look at Naruto only to see that he was just staring at her with a blank expression, pretty much telling her 'I told you so'. She smiled at him sheepishly and laughed nervously in response.

"Yeah Mom they look great, but look, listen, me and Becca are thirteen years old. We're too old to Trick or Treat anymore" Naruto tried to explain to his mother. He appreciated the effort that his mother put into this, but he really didn't want to do this tonight. It would be so embarrassing for him to be Trick or Treating with his parents now that he was thirteen.

Kushina knew her son would be against this, but it wasn't that bad in her opinion. Sure they were a little older than the other kids that will be out tonight, but she wanted to spend time with her boy some more before he outgrew some of these things. She was going to get her way on this, especially after the trouble she and her husband went through to get tonight off.

"But I worked so hard all day on these outfits. Not to mention me and your father were able to get off from work for tonight" Kushina sadly said to her son. She made sure to pout and to try to look like she had tears in her eyes to help sell the act for her boy.

Naruto was conflicted about what to say. He knew his mother was exaggerating a little bit, but he also knew she really wanted to do this tonight. He looked at his Dad and Rebecca to see that they were both waiting for his answer.

Naruto raised his head towards the ceiling and gave out a loud sigh of frustration.

"Ugh Fine, Ok I'll do it for you, but only if Becca is ok with it" Naruto relented to his mother. Kushina was happy that her plan seemed to be working, but she didn't take Rebecca into account. She hoped the girl was ok with it, but she would understand if she didn't want to.

Rebecca was a little surprised when Naruto mentioned her and she became a little nervous when everyone looked at her to see what she would say. The young girl blushed at the attention, but she thought about what she wanted to do. She could see how much this meant to Mrs. Namikaze and she didn't want to be the reason they couldn't go out tonight.

'Besides maybe going out tonight will be fun' She thought to herself. Rebecca had not been able to go out like this for years and the idea did appeal to her.

"I think it'll be fun. Let's do it" Rebecca smiled hopefully as she answered them.

"Yes! Alright. Here you go, Naruto, go ahead and put it on so I can get a good look. Rebecca, come with me and we can try this on to see if I need to alter it any." Kushina instructed both of the young teens as she handed Naruto his outfit and walked over to Rebecca to guide her to her own room.

Naruto looked back at his dad while he made his way to his room and saw him grinning. He knew his dad was taking great amusement out of this and Naruto promised himself that he would get back at him for it.

He figured that the clothes would fit him. His mother was actually really good at sewing clothes, it was something that she picked up from her mother when she was younger, she had told him once before when he was younger.

Rebecca's outfit was the only one that might need some adjustments because of how the gown might be too loose and droopy. Kushina took Rebecca shopping a couple weeks ago after the girl started back to school. The older woman offered to buy the young girl some clothes when they were at the store, but Rebecca was against it. She didn't want to impose on her friend's mom, but Kushina told her it wasn't a problem and was able to convince the girl to get a few things. That was how Kushina learned the girl's sizes to be able to do this tonight.

Naruto finished putting the outfit on and looked himself over. He had just about everything from the signature look except the boots. His mother even had somehow gotten a fake leather holster for his fake toy gun.

'God this is embarrassing' Naruto thought to himself while shaking his head, but he loved his mom and he wanted to make her happy, so he would suck it up and do it for her tonight.

After he had gotten over how he looked the young man left his room and walked back into the kitchen where his father was still waiting at the table.

"Wow, looking good champ," Minato laughed and complimented his son to Naruto's annoyance.

"Yeah, yeah laugh it up" Naruto sarcastically said to his father while he crossed his arms.

The door to Minato and Kushina's room opened up after Naruto spoke to reveal Kushina and Rebecca walking out with the young girl wearing the white princess gown. Naruto could see that Rebecca was blushing and he couldn't blame her. He felt like an idiot wearing this getup, but he honestly thought she looked kinda cute wearing the gown. The sound of his father's voice brought Naruto out of his daze.

"You look very nice Rebecca" Minato complimented her with a smile.

"Thanks" Rebecca smiled and shyly replied while she played with one of the sleeves.

"Yeah I knew I did a good job, but I probably need to shorten the sleeves a little though. Sweetie, what do you think?" Kushina asked her son. The gown was fine in her opinion, but Kushina thought that Naruto complimenting the girl would make her feel more comfortable.

"U-uh yeah I think she looks really cute" Naruto nervously replied to her question. The young man had a blush on his face when Rebecca looked at him. His compliment caused the young girl to gain a bright blush of her own to Minato and Kushina's joy.

"Alright you lovebirds there's one last piece for both of your outfits I need you to try on." Kushina teased and informed both of them to their embarrassment. Naruto's Dad reached around the side of the table and grabbed a sack that the two kids didn't notice before. He handed it to Kushina who reached in and pulled out what looked like two balls of hair.

"Ta-da! These will complete the look for both of you" Kushina exclaimed to both of them while smiling. Minato couldn't hold it in anymore and laughed out loud at the two kids' reactions.

Naruto and Rebecca's jaws dropped when they saw what she was holding. The outfits were bad enough in their opinion, but now wigs too?! Both kids groaned out loud in frustration and annoyance. Kushina and Minato laughed at their antics while the older woman handed out the wigs to both of them.

Naruto and Rebecca reluctantly put them on for the adults. They had never worn wigs before, but they felt about how they thought they would feel. The wigs were itchy, tight, and smelled funny. Not to mention Rebecca's hair stuck out in the back, but it wasn't very noticeable unless you stood right behind her.

Kushina seemed pleased with how they both looked and asked them to turn around all the way for her. Once she was satisfied with what she saw, she told both of them that they could take off the outfits until it was time to go. She asked Rebecca to bring back the gown, so she could shorten up the sleeves for her.

After the teens came back with the outfits, and gave them to Kushina, they decided to watch some television to pass the time. They all had a few hours before they needed to get ready and Kushina needed to cook the lasagna she decided earlier for dinner.

While the teens were watching TV and Kushina was making their food for tonight Minato was in deep thought. The reason being was what Minato found out a few weeks ago from his landlady in regards to Rebecca. The old woman had told him that the young girl's mother ran out on them a few years ago and that the father had been in and out of work.

Mrs. Willaims also told him that she had called child services before when Rebecca's father had not come home in over a week. The only reason she even found out about that was because Rebecca came down to her apartment one day asking for some food.

The situation with Rebecca's school also gave Minato and Kushina better insight into what the young girl's home life was probably like. They didn't mind helping her get back into school, but they weren't surprised when Rebecca said she didn't believe her Dad would help. Rebecca even went as far as to ask them not to talk to her father about it. Both of the adults were very weary about doing this behind her father's back because they understood as parents how they would react if someone did something similar with Naruto.

To their surprise her father never said a word. To this day they still haven't even met the man. After that the Namikaze's came to an agreement that they would make sure to let Rebecca know that she could ask them for help whenever she needed and that she was welcomed to their home anytime.

Minato glanced over to Rebecca to see her laughing with Naruto over something on TV and he faintly smiled. He could empathize with the young girl more than others and that was because he grew up in a similar situation when he was a child. His father was a drunk who used to beat him and his mother when he would get home from a bad day at work. He remembered the worst day of his life was when his father became so angry and drunk one night that he beat his mother to death.

Minato ran out of their house per his mother's plea before it happened, so he could get help and call the police. Sadly once they arrived it was too late for his mom and they arrested his father. He had to grow up in a state run home for the rest of his childhood and he didn't want that for Rebecca.

He promised to himself that if he saw signs of what had happened to him was also happening to Rebecca he would step in and put a stop to it. Kushina agreed with him and told him that he had her support even if it meant taking in the young girl. They knew it would be really difficult to have another mouth to feed, but they wouldn't and couldn't turn away from this young girl if she needed help.

Minato was brought out of his musing when his wife brought the food to the table and called out for the kids to come eat. The lasagna was delicious as always and it didn't take long for them to finish their meal. Once they were done Kushina cleared the table so she could quickly finish with Rebecca's gown. Minato and Naruto went ahead and changed into what they were going to wear tonight while Rebecca waited for Kushina at the table.

The two men came back to Kushina finishing her sewing and they decided to watch the evening news while they waited on the girls to get ready. It took some time for the girls to get ready, but it wasn't something Naruto and Minato hadn't had to deal with before, so they patiently waited until the girls came out.

Eventually the girls were done and they came to the living to get ready to leave, but before they did Kushina remembered that she wanted to get a picture of all of them before they left. She asked Minato to go get the camera from their bedroom while she checked over the kids outfits one more time. Naruto groaned in annoyance after she said this because the last thing he wanted was to get photographed while wearing this thing.

Kushina rolled her eyes at her son's antics and flicked his ear to Rebecca's amusement. Naruto grumbled and grabbed his ear to try to rub the pain away while his Dad made it back with the camera. Minato and the kids shuffled into the living room as Kushina took the camera and placed it on the bookshelf above the TV. She quickly set the timer and hurried over to her family to stand beside Minato for the picture.

Minato saw that his son wasn't smiling, so he reached over and tickled his son's ear. Naruto laughed and brushed his father's hand away as Rebecca and Kushina giggled at both of them while the camera took their picture. Satisfied that she got the pictures she wanted, Kushina grabbed the camera and put it back while Minato grabbed the grocery sacks that the kids would be using tonight. Once Kushina came back everyone grabbed their jackets and made their way out the door, but unfortunately they ran into a potential problem in the hallway.

"Rebecca? What the hell are you doing?" Rebecca's father asked her once he saw her come out of the Namikaze's apartment. Rebecca froze stiff in front of her father, surprised to see him here now. It looks like they had caught the man as he was coming home from work. Naruto's eyes widened when he heard this man speak to his friend. He was shocked because he just realized that her father was the drunk he met on the stairs that same night he met Rebecca.

Rebecca tried to reply, but she fumbled over her words and couldn't form a response. She reached over and grabbed Naruto's hand for comfort, but she was still caught off guard by her father's appearance. Minato came to Rebecca's rescue and spoke up to take the attention away from her.

"Hi I'm Minato Namikaze and this is my wife Kushina and my son Naruto. Nice to meet you." Minato said while he offered his hand to shake.

"Brian Lee'' the man replied curtly. He didn't shake Minato's hand and instead glanced at each of them as Minato pulled back his hand with a frown. Kushina was having a hard time not saying something to this man, but she realized that doing so would cause problems that might ruin their night, so she settled for a hard look. Rebecca's father looked back down at his daughter causing the young girl to flinch and tighten her hold on Naruto's hand.

"Well I can see how this is a confusing situation, but we had asked Rebecca if she wanted to go Trick or Treating tonight with my son and she said yes. We were just on our way out right now" Minato explained to the man with a forced smile while Kushina placed a hand on Rebecca's shoulder.

"Is that right?" Brian questioned his daughter with doubt in his voice.

"Y-y-yes sir" Rebecca quickly replied with a stutter. She was clearly afraid of this man and it pissed both of Naruto's parents off. Naruto gently squeezed Rebecca's hand back to reassure her while she answered her father hoping it would bring her some comfort. Even though they didn't know it Rebecca was incredibly thankful for their support.

Rebecca's father narrowed his eyes in suspicion. He didn't miss how this man didn't ask him if it was ok to take his daughter with them, and it greatly annoyed him, but he didnt feel like dealing with this right now. He had bought a bottle on his way home that had his name on it and he wasn't gonna waste anymore time on this.

The man grunted shortly after and opened his front door and walked into his apartment. He made sure to slam the door shut to show that he wasn't pleased with what had happened. Rebecca flinched at first, but soon breathed a sigh of relief after he slammed the door. Kushina opened her mouth to say something, but Minato stopped her with a look. He hoped she would understand that this wasn't the right place for this conversation. Kushina 'tsked' and looked to the side in annoyance, but didnt say anything.

"Alright kids, let's go before you miss out on all the candy," Minato suggested to the teens. He made sure to smile for the two so they could see that he wasn't bothered by what happened and neither should they.

Naruto and Rebecca nodded at him and they both started their way down the steps to go outside. The two adults followed them in an uncomfortable silence. Rebecca was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the silence as they walked down the stairs and she felt like she had to say something to clear the air. The young girl started to say something to them, but Kushina raised her hand to signal her to stop.

"It's ok sweetheart, you don't have to apologize for him" Kushina told her. Rebecca wasn't satisfied with what she said and she opened her mouth to continue, but Naruto spoke up before she could.

"Becca, seriously it's ok" Naruto reassured her. She looked over at him and saw that he was giving her a soft smile. She looked up to Minato to see him giving her a smile with a wink to show that he felt the same way.

Rebecca lowered her head in embarrassment, but not because she felt bad at what had happened, but because she was happy. A warmth blossomed in her chest and she recognized what it was. It was a feeling of happiness that she hasn't felt since she was a little girl before her mother left. Rebecca brought her hand up to her face to wipe the tears away that had started to leak out of her eyes.

"Thank you" Rebecca gently whispered to the family, but they heard her perfectly and smiled all the same.

The four of them stepped outside shortly after. The sun was still out and it was a little cloudy and there was a little bit of a chill in the air. The four of them saw that there was a good number of adults with their costumed children on the street and they all seemed to be excited and happy. Minato looked back to his son and best friend and could tell that their moods were still a little downcast, so he figured that he should do something to lighten the mood. Lucky for him as he was looking down at the kids he saw the perfect opportunity to do so.

"You two sure are a cute couple," Minato said to Naruto and Rebecca. The kids blushed and looked over to him to see what he meant by that. They saw that he was looking at something between them and they followed his gaze. To their embarrassment both of them were still holding hands even after they had walked out of the apartment building. The two teens quickly pulled their hands away from each other as Naruto's parents laughed at their plight.

Satisfied with the outcome and the change in atmosphere Minato cleared his throat and pointed to an apartment building that they could start with for tonight. Naruto and Rebecca seemed all too eager to forget about what had just happened and started down the street.

Naruto sighed in annoyance for what felt like the hundredth time tonight as he walked down the steps of a townhouse with his family. The people living in the house they just visited were nice people, but it was obvious they were trying not to laugh at the two teens. This had been the trend for the night sadly. It didn't happen at every house they visited, but a lot of them seemed to be holding back laughs when they realized how old He and Rebecca were.

Kushina and Minato didn't pay it any mind and Rebecca seemed to be having a good time tonight regardless, so Naruto kept his mouth shut. He didn't want to ruin the fun for her especially after what happened with her dad. Overall it was a really good night and he was having a good time as well. They had gotten quite a lot of candy and he was definitely happy about that regardless of how old he was.

His parents seemed to be really enjoying themsleves tonight with how often they were smiling and laughing with him and Rebecca. Naruto was happy that they were able to get off work and have some fun. They worked so hard for him and each other. They barely had any time to spend with him because of it, not to mention themselves and it made Naruto really glad that they were able to do that tonight.

Rebecca was the most animated tonight though. She was shy at first but after a few houses she was practically dragging them along the rest of the night. Naruto hadn't seen her so happy before and he was glad to see it. He figured that after her mother left and with the way her dad acted she didn't get to do a lot of things like this anymore and he was really happy that she was able to get to experience this tonight.

Naruto looked up and realized that it was starting to get dark out. He knew his parents would say something soon and call it a night because he had seen his Dad glance at his wristwatch a couple of times recently. The thing was, Naruto wasn't ready to call it a night and since they were not too far from Mott. St. He figured that they still had enough time to try one more street and he had noticed that not alot of people had been walking down one in particular tonight.

He looked up at the street sign and saw that it read Water Street. He hadn't been down this street before, but it looked like it would be fun. There were a lot of neon signs and lights along the street and expensive looking restaurants.

"Hey Mom, Dad, can we try one more street before we call it," Naruto asked his parents. His parents were talking to Rebecca about how much candy she was able to haul tonight when he got their attention. All three of them looked curious about which street he was going to ask them about.

"Yeah I guess we can try one more, but that's gonna be it cause it's getting late kiddo" Minato told his son.

Naruto inclined his head towards Water Street suggesting it. His parents were surprised by his choice more so because they hadn't realized that they had come so close to this street. Naruto was confused by his parents' reaction to his suggestion. They seemed to be worried and unsure about going down this street. He looked over to Becca and saw that she was just as upset as his parents.

"What's wrong?" Naruto asked them, to his confusion.

Minato and Kushina looked indecisive about answering him and Rebecca also seemed like she would like to be anywhere but here right now. The discomfort was visible on all three of their faces.

"We're not going to go down there, Naruto. Let's head on back home." Kushina said to her son. Naruto could tell that she wasn't suggesting and was actually telling him, so he didn't try to argue. The two adults guided the teens in front of them and shielded them from Water Street as they walked away.

Naruto was pretty confused about what had just happened and he had questions. He noticed that Becca and his parents had become unusually quiet and they had seemed to pick up their pace.

"Mom, Dad what was that about?" Naruto asked his parents as they rounded the corner.

His parents looked at each other and seemed to be having a silent conversation with themselves, but Rebecca spoke up before they could answer.

"That's where the Sun Yee On hangout Naruto '' Rebecca whispered to him nervously. Naruto didn't know who that was, but he noticed how Becca's eyes were shifting around like she was looking to see if anyone had heard her. The young man looked to his parents for an explanation, but they just shook their heads.

"We'll tell you once we get to our street ok?" Minato offered Naruto. Their son just nodded his head in response to their relief and they resumed their treck right after.

Naruto didn't know what to make of how his parents were acting. His Mom and Dad always gave off this air of confidence and to see them so worried and nervous was really throwing him off. These Sun Yee On people must have been some scary guys to get his parents to act this way. Rebecca knew who they were and she seemed afraid to even talk about them out loud.

Naruto was a little anxious to know who these people were, but he knew to just wait and he would get his answer. It didn't take long for them to make it back to their street and into their building with the pace Becca and his parents set and Naruto could see his family visibly relax when they made it back. Becca let out a sigh of relief and his parents shoulders slumped showing him that they were tense while leaving Water Street.

"Wow that was close, could you have imagined if someone from work had seen me after I called out sick" Kushina said to her husband in relief.

"Yeah no kidding, I can't believe we made it down there and didn't notice. I guess we were just so caught up in all the fun." Minato explained to his wife. Kushina and Minato started to laugh, to Naruto's annoyance. He could tell they were trying to play the whole thing off and change the subject, but he wouldn't let them get away with that.

Naruto crossed his arms and cleared his throat to get their attention. It worked for him because his parents stopped laughing and sighed in resignation while looking at him. Rebecca cracked a grin in amusement, finding the whole thing funny with how their roles seemed reversed.

"So who are those people Becca told me about and what did you mean by someone from work?" Naruto interrogated his parents. If the topic wasn't so serious Minato and Kushina would have laughed at how their son was acting, but they needed to have this conversation with Naruto and now was as good a time as any.

"The Sun Yee On are a Triad, Naruto, and they control everything that happens on Water St. Me and your Mom work at The Golden Koi and it's owned by one of the Red Poles of the Sun Yee On" Minato explained to Naruto with a grim tone in his voice.

Naruto's face was scrunched in confusion after hearing this. He didn't know what a Triad was and he didn't know how that pertained to his parents and their job. Rebecca could see his confusion and decided to help him understand.

"Their criminals, Naruto. They own some of the stores back there and they force the ones that they don't own to pay protection money. They have no problem hurting people who disrespect them or get in their way." Rebecca informed him to his horror.

"Why are you two working for those people?!" Naruto exclaimed loudly to his parents.

"Naruto!" Kushina exclaimed to her son in anger. Naruto tried to answer back but his Father interrupted him before he could speak.

"Your mother's right, Naruto. You don't talk to us like that" Minato frowned while talking to him. Naruto was frustrated at both of them but realized they were right and apologized to them. Satisfied with his apology, Minato cleared his throat so he could explain to him why they worked at the Golden Koi.

"Naruto, the reason why we work there is because of the money we make. To be honest we didn't know that The Sun Yee On owned the restaurant, but after we had gotten our first check we decided that it didn't matter. We needed that money and wanted it, so we could provide you with a better life." Minato explained to his son.

Naruto looked to his Mother to hear what she had to say but she answered him by giving him a loving smile. It was all he needed to see and hear to understand why they worked there, but it still greatly worried him.

"Nothing bad has happened since you started there right?" Naruto asked them with worry clear on his face and in his voice. Minato and Kushina were touched by their son's worry, but it wasn't needed.

"No, nothing has happened. We just do our work and mind our own business. None of the workers say anything about it, we all know, but we don't mention anything." Kushina informed her son to his relief.

"How did this even happen? Wouldn't the police have stopped them when they started to do all of this?" Naruto questioned his parents. Minato and Kushina look unsure on how to answer, but before they could, Rebecca answered Naruto for them.

"They did try..at first" Rebecca told him with bitterness in her voice. Naruto heard that last part she mumbled and showed his confusion by cocking an eyebrow.

Before Rebecca could respond Minato spoke up and suggested that they finish this discussion back in the apartment. He believed it wouldn't do them any good standing around in the lobby talking about this out loud. Rebecca and Naruto thought it over for a second and then nodded their heads in agreement.

Once they made it back to the apartment Naruto and Rebecca quickly got out of their costumes and dressed back into their clothes from earlier. The two of them came back into the kitchen to see Kushina and Minato already sitting there waiting for them.

"What do you mean at first? Are you saying they stopped trying?" Naruto asked Rebecca after they both sat down.

"Yeah they stopped 'really' trying after a while. The Sun Yee On and another Triad called 18k started showing up around here a few years ago when Chinatown had a wave of immigrants come in." Rebecca answered Naruto. She looked over to Naruto to see she had his full attention.

"The Triads didn't do anything at first but after a while they began to strong arm businesses for money and running gambling halls out of them. They're into a bunch of other stuff too like brothels and drugs. The police tried to stop them at first by raiding some of their businesses and arresting their members but it didn't work. Either someone tipped them off in advance and they were able to hide anything that would get them in trouble or they were released shortly after they were arrested." Rebecca explained to Naruto with a frown.

"So..a cop was being paid off" Naruto said as more of a statement than a question. Rebecca nodded her head confirming what he said.

"But more than likely it was more than one, and it may have even been some politicians. The leaders of the two Triads had a lot of money when they came here, so I'm sure they used it to buy people off." His friend explained to him.

"How can we rely on the police if they're being paid off?" Naruto furrowed his brows and asked out loud for anyone to answer. His parents shared a concerned glance with each other because they knew there wasn't a good answer for him.

"Not all of them are corrupt Naruto. Actually I'm sure most of them are good cops, but Rebecca is right, there are a few who are bad. That doesn't mean you shouldn't have faith in them though. They know that they have corruption in their ranks and I'm sure they're working on getting rid of it." Minato told his son. He had hoped that telling Naruto this would help restore some faith in the police for the boy. He didn't want his son to be so afraid that he wouldn't even be willing to go out and try to live his life.

"I know it's not the most reassuring thing to hear sweetie but it's not all bad. You and Rebecca just keep doing what you have been. Me and your Dad can handle ourselves and nothing is going to happen at the restaurant." Kushina tried to reassure her son. Naruto was staring down at the table while soaking all of this in and he was having trouble coming to terms with it.

Naruto didn't like what he had just been told at all, but what could he do. He was just a kid, and he didn't have any money. The facts were that his family was in a situation that they didn't have any choice over and there wasn't anything he could do about it. They would just have to suck it up, and keep their heads down, and hope that there wasn't any trouble that came their way.

Naruto clenched his fist in frustration while thinking about this.

He hated feeling this way, so powerless and desperate. His parents shouldn't have to be putting themselves into a situation like this. It was too dangerous for them to be there, but he knew that they needed the money. He knew his parents wouldn't have picked this if they had any other choice, but that still wasn't very comforting.

"You said a Red Pole owns the restaurant? What does that mean?" Naruto asked his parents after a beat of silence.

Minato furrowed his brows in thought after his son asked this. He knew that the owner was a high ranking member of the Sun Yee On, but he didn't exactly know what a Red Pole meant either. He had heard some of his coworkers whispering to each other about it the other day.

"A Red Pole is what they call a high ranking member of the Sun Yee On" Rebecca answered. Naruto and his parents looked over to Rebecca when they heard her speak up. The young girl could see the confusion on Mr. Namikaze's face after Naruto asked him, so she decided to speak up and tell them what it meant.

She looked back towards Mr. Namikaze to see him nod his head towards her. Rebecca took that as her que to go ahead and explain what she knew to Naruto.

"Red Poles are the Highest ranking members of the Sun Yee On after the leaders, the Three Tigers, and there are four of them. They are the ones that run the businesses and operations that make the Triad their money. The best comparison for them would be like Captains in the Army because they are the ones that issue the orders to the foot soldiers." Rebecca explained to her friend.

"How do you know all of this Rebecca?" Kushina asked her worry and concern clearly in her voice.

Rebecca looked sheepish right before she answered the older woman.

"Well people tend to talk, especially when they dont notice you sitting by the steps to this building. People tend to ignore me anyway, so I guess they feel safe to talk about stuff like that when I'm around" Rebecca revealed to her.

Kushina frowned because of what Rebecca just told her. She didn't like how the people around here just seemed to ignore the young girl like she was some kind of eyesore that would go away if they didn't pay her any attention. Kushina also realized that this wasn't the time to bring this up, but she would talk with Rebecca later when she could. The information about the Sun Yee On was the important thing right now.

It was a lot of information to take in for Naruto and his parents as well. Even though they knew the owner was an important man in the Triad they didn't realize that he was this important.

"So this Red Pole is really powerful then?" Naruto asked Rebecca just to make sure he understood that right.

"Yes, very powerful. He's one of the most powerful men in Chinatown, maybe even in the whole city." Rebecca informed Naruto.

"What's his name?" Naruto asked her. After hearing all this, he was curious to know who this Red Pole was.

"His name's Uncle Po'' Rebecca told him with a sense of seriousness in her voice that wasn't usual for her.

"Uncle..Po?" Naruto asked her in surprised confusion. He expected a name that sounded a little more intimidating to be honest, but not something that sounded so normal.

"I know, I thought the same thing when I found out who he was, but trust me he's not some nice old man. He's ruthless" Rebecca revealed to him. She wanted to make sure Naruto knew that this man wasn't someone he should take lightly, because people had before and it didn't turn out well for them.

"Mom, Dad, have you two met Uncle Po?" Naruto turned to his parents and asked. He had hoped that maybe they had met him and they could tell him that this guy wasn't as bad as Rebecca said. Hearing about how dangerous this guy was and knowing that his parents might be around him everyday worried him greatly.

Minato and Kushina shared a glance between themselves, clearly communicating with one another.

"We've seen him at the restaurant from time to time but we haven't actually met him. He usually shows up once a month to check in with our boss and talk about money. We don't ask questions" Minato revealed to Naruto.

Naruto wasn't too pleased to hear that. He had hoped that his parents didn't have to be around someone like him, but Uncle Po was the owner of the Restaurant where they worked, so it was a long shot to think that he didn't spend time there.

"I know you told me not to worry earlier, but how can I not when I know you two are around dangerous people like them all the time" Naruto said to his parents.

"We understand Naruto, but this is how things are right now. As long as we just do our jobs our bosses won't have a problem with us. They also don't associate with the help, but I guess that's because they don't want us to get involved." Kushina explained to her little boy.

Naruto didn't like that answer, but he realized that there really isn't anything he could do to change it. He had hoped that maybe his parents would see how worried he was and think about getting another job, but he could tell they were dead set on staying there to work even with the risks involved. He did appreciate what they were doing though, in his mind he couldn't ask for better parents.

"Well I guess that's that huh? Just promise me you'll both be careful ok?" Naruto asked his parents. Minato and Kushina could see how important this was to him, even if it wasn't totally up to them while working there.

"We promise," Minato and Kushina said to their son. Naruto could hear the resolve in his parent's voice when they said that and it gave some relief and comfort.

"Well now that we have gotten this outta the way why don't you two go get your bags and we can eat the candy you got." Kushina suggested it to both of the kids.

"Yeah, give us a second." Naruto said to his parents as he and Rebecca got up and moved to get their bags from the door. The two adults were happy for the change of pace. Once Naruto and Rebecca made it back and dumped their bags of candy onto the table all thoughts about what they had talked about earlier faded away.

The rest of the night was very nice for all of them while they enjoyed their spoils. They spent their time enjoying each other's presence and talking about things like candy and which one was their favorite, school and any friends Naruto and Rebecca may have made. All in all it was a really fun night for everyone, especially Rebecca. It was like being a part of a family again for her and she really didn't want it to end, but unfortunately it was getting late and she needed to go home.

"Well I need to be going home now. It's getting too late and I don't want my dad to get upset." Rebecca said to the Namikazes' as she got up from her chair. Naruto was sad that she had to go, but he understood and he didn't blame her for not wanting to make her dad upset, he figured the man probably wasn't any fun to be around when he was upset.

"Thank you for inviting me over Mr. and Mrs. Namikaze. I had a great time tonight." Rebecca told them as she grabbed her jacket.

"Wait, before you go I was wanting to ask you something." Naruto said to her before she made it to the door. He had almost forgotten to ask her if she wanted to try out his skateboard again tomorrow.

"I was watching TV the other day and saw some more tricks these skateboarders were doing and I wanted to know if you would like to try them out with me tomorrow?" Naruto asked her hopefully.

Rebecca had a curious look on her face when Naruto had stopped her, but that quickly changed when she heard his request. She was excited about the idea of trying to skateboard again. The two of them hadn't had a chance to use it, since they had been spending the past two weeks getting Rebecca caught up with school.

"Yeah, I'd really like that. What time should I come by?" She smiled and asked him in return.

"Well, I'd say before lunch. We can get something to eat before we go out" Naruto told her. He knew his mom would be here tomorrow, but he just hoped she would be willing to make them something to eat. She tended to sleep in on Saturdays when she had the day off.

"Ok then, that sounds good. Don't get upset when I embarrass you again on the board." Rebecca teased him as she made it to the door. Naruto playfully huffed in annoyance when she said that. She was clearly referencing when he fell on his ass last time he tried this.

"Yeah whatever, the new stuff we try out tomorrow is what you should be worried about, I'm sure you'll be the one that gets embarrassed." Naruto taunted her back, but Rebecca wasn't gonna let him get the last word in.

"Cool story bro, Goodnight Mr. and Mrs. Namikaze, thanks again." Rebecca said as she made her way out the door. Naruto was stunned by her just casually brushing off what he said, but while he was shocked Minato and Kushina told the young girl goodnight and waved goodbye.

Minato and Kushina's snickering brought Naruto out of his stupor and he frowned at both of them.

"It's not that funny, we'll see who gets the last laugh tomorrow though." Naruto grumbled at first, but finished with a challenging glint in his eyes.

"Look at our son honey, so excited and worked up over his first date. Isn't it just adorable?" Kushina said to her husband while teasing her son.

"Yeah he's growing so fast now." Minato added to her teasing with a fond smile.

Naruto's face was burning red with embarrassment at all the teasing that was coming his way recently, and him hanging out with Rebecca tomorrow was not a date.

"It's not a date! We're just hanging out together after we eat lunch." Naruto exclaimed to both of his parents. Minato and Kushina just smirked in amusement because of what their son had said.

"Sounds like a date to me," Kushina replied with a knowing smile to her son.

Naruto opened his mouth to retort, but he thought about what his mother said and thought back to his words. He released to his horror that what he said fit the definition of a date. Naruto groaned in frustration and buried his head into his hands as his parents laughed at his realization.

Today had been a good day in Naruto's opinion. He could have done without all the teasing, but it is what it is. As he sat there with his head laid down on the table he thought about tomorrow and how he hoped it would be just as fun as tonight was. For Naruto the last couple of weeks had probably been the best time of his life and he was excited for what the future could hold for all of them.

A.N.

First thing I want to say is sorry for the long wait. Life got pretty busy for me and I just now had time to work on this the past month. I also want to say that I've been reading stories on this site for years and I know how disappointing it can be when a story doesn't get finished. I wanted to

say that because of that I will not abandon this story or any others I write. Unless something unexpected happens (knock on wood) I will finish this story. Now with that out of the way I finally want to say thank you for the reviews and I hope you all like this chapter.
