Chapter 23
It's been four hours since the Avengers left for Sakovia.
My friends weren't concerned, as far as they knew it was a mission to a foreign country, I knew better.
I was thinking of ways to help and change things, but that would be met with the unknown consequences that I couldn't foresee… I was sounding like Nighteyes.
I didn't want to make a worse fate than what was supposed to happen.
I was sitting on the couch as Maria Hill was helping Ochako with her English. Natasha was supposed to help her in that regard, when they began training Natasha started to teach Ochako the basics and now she was able to hold a conversation for a while.
I was writing on a new notebook that Steve got me, I took notes on the avengers just for keepsake.
Maria was called by Jarvis that Helen Cho had arrived.
Maria left immediately. "... Uraraka?" Ochako looked at me. "Do you get the feeling that something is gonna happen?" I asked.
The brown haired girl frowned and shook her head. "No, do you feel that way?" I bit my lip. "Never mind, I'm gonna go and find Melissa." I got up and walked to the elevator.
I found her in Bruce's lab, looking through her tablet. "Hey." I greeted. Looking up from the tablet, Melissa lightly blushed. "Oh Hi, is everything alright?" She asked.
"Yeah it's just that -" I was cut off as the sound of a jet landing was heard. I looked out the window to see the quinjet was landing. Melissa ran out and I followed after.
We met up with Momo and Ochako at the hanger along with some scientists and a Korean woman, Helen Cho. Momo gasped seeing Barton on a gurney.
The scientists with Helen instructing them, grabbed a hold of the gurney and pulled Clint inside with Momo following behind.
I knew that he was gonna be fine, but what got my attention was what Thor was carrying.
Thor passed by us with Loki's scepter under his arm. I stared as I could hear whispers coming from the thing.
Time slowed as I could hear the whispers becoming louder, I was snapped out of it by Melissa who put a hand on my shoulder with a worried look on her face. "Are you okay?" She asked. "Yeah." I responded with a nod and walked over to meet Steve and Maria.
"The enhanced?" Steve asked. "Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, Twins." Maria handed Steve a tablet, I silently walked with them. "Orphaned at 10 when a shell collapsed their apartment building." Maria explained.
"Sakovia's had a rough history, It's nowhere special but it's on the way to anywhere special." I took out my notebook and pencil.
"Their abilities?" Steve asked. "He's got increased metabolism and improved thermal homeostasis. And her thing is neuroelectric interfacing, telekinesis and mental manipulation." Maria told him. I wrote it all down as I wrote down the names and their abilities.
Steve gave Maria a look saying that he didn't understand a thing. "The brother has super speed which makes him eat more and the sister has mind powers that allow her to move things without touching them and enter people's heads." I simplified.
Steve and Maria looked at me. "Kid-" "I know, I know but I can't help it, stuff like this tends to get my interest, besides, I think I can help with finding any weaknesses." I smiled at Maria who gave me a hard look.
"Well in any case, they're gonna show up again." Steve entered the elevator with me following. "Agreed… files said they volunteered for Strucker's experiments, it's nuts." Maria continued.
I frowned at that. "Right, what kind of monster would let a german scientist experiment on them to protect their country?" Maria gave Steve a look. "We're not at war captain." "They are." Steve countered as the doors closed.
I looked at my notebook. "What was that thing Thor was carrying?" I asked. "Nothing you should worry about." Steve looked at me with a sten gaze. "I… Okay." I obeyed as we left the elevator.
I made my way to the lounge and looked at the lab that was on the upper levels. "The fuck did they bring?" Bakugo asked as he walked in. "Nothing we should be concerned about Steve told me." I responded.
"... Can you tell me what the fuck is going on?" Bakugo growled. "No, because I don't know what's going on, if I did, I would have said something." I gave him a look, I didn't want to lie but I needed to.
"... Fine, so what now?" He asked. I shrugged. "Back to our daily routine I guess." There was gonna be a party soon, so might as well enjoy the peace until everything went to shit.
It was Saturday, I was able to convince Steve to let us join the party.
My friends were excited to be mingling with other people after being isolated for a week… Well, one was not happy about it.
Especially since we had to wear something formal.
"I'm not wearing that thing." Bakugo snarled at Momo as she held up a nice red dress shirt and grey vest and pants and jacket.
"Bakugo please, it took a while for Midoriya to convince Captain Rogers to allow us to attend, at least dress for the occasion." Momo frowned, she wore a dark green dress that went down to her ankles with her hair tied up with a nice floral hair pin.
"FUCK NO!" Bakugo crossed his arms.
The six of us were in my room getting ready for the party. Shoto sighed, buttoning up his blue dress shirt. "Bakugo, just put it on." "CAN IT ICY HOT!" Bakugo shouted.
"He really hates formal wear doesn't he?" Melissa asked Ochako with a frown as she adjusted her blue dress, she didn't have her contacts so she had to keep her glasses. Ochako placed the bow on her head. "No, but I'm not surprised based on his personality."
I stepped out of the bathroom wearing a white dress shirt with a red tie, black pants, a black jacket with a grey vest underneath and my red shoes. "Bakugo, it's just for tonight." I said as I adjusted my jacket and looked at my friends and was surprised to see the girls staring at me with their mouths open.
"Umm is something wrong?" I asked frowning. "Is it bad?"
'OH NO HE'S HOT!' Ochako was turning redder the longer she stared at Izuku.
'He pulls it off so well.. Even with the red shoes!' Momo was drooling a bit at the sight of her crush in a suit.
'Papa said no boys until I was older… Maybe now is a good time.' Melissa's glasses were fogged but the image of Izuku in a suit was now engraved in her memory.
"It looks good." Shoto gave me a thumbs up. "Grrr I can look better than you Deku!" He snatched the suit from Momo and stomped into the bathroom to change.
I blinked and looked at Shoto. "What was that about?" I asked. Shoto shrugged. "Umm it looks very nice on you!" Momo recovered first and smiled at me.
"Oh good, just something missing." I looked at my hands. "Momo, could you make me some black gloves please?" I asked.
"Oh of course." Holding out her hand she made a set of black gloves, I took them with a nod of thanks and put them on.
"You know I never really wore anything this formal before." I chuckled. "Me either, I'm so nervous." Ochako looked away with a nervous laugh.
"Well don't be, you look beautiful." I complimented her. "O-oh, thank you Deku." Ochako blushed with a shy smile.
"You all look beautiful actually." I smiled widely, they were wearing the same outfits from the party in I-island.
"Momo did a good job on making these outfits." Melissa complimented the rich girl. "Yeah, if you weren't aiming to be a hero, you could be an amazing tailor." I added.
"Thank you." Momo smiled brightly. "Do I have to wear a tie?" Bakugo walked out with his tie in hand. "Yes." We all said.
This was gonna take some time.
The party was in full swing, the lounge was filled with people, I didn't know who they were but I was happy to see familiar faces, The Falcon was playing pool with Steve, Rhodey was talking to Widow and Ochako. Bakugo was sitting next to them looking like he wanted to be anywhere but here.
Tony, Thor, Shoto, Clint, Melissa and Maria were in a conversation of their own. I saw Bruce mingling like I was but I decided to leave him to it.
I was just walking around smiling and greeting people. I had to be polite but I needed to keep an eye on things in case they got bad.
I went up to the balcony overlooking the city, no one else was there, I took in the fresh air.
Things were never easy were they… At least it was interesting.
"I was hoping to catch you." An old voice called behind me.
I blinked and looked behind me and froze. No way… "Umm Hi sir." I smiled at Stan Lee who was in his age of ultron cameo outfit. "Is there something I can do for you?" I asked. "Ah no need to pretend, I know who you are." Stan walked up next to me putting his hands on the rails.
I looked at him shocked. "Wait… what do you mean?" I asked. "You and your friends are not from this world and you are not in your own body." Stan smiled at me.
Shock filled my body, how did he know, he wasn't supposed to. "How.." Stan laughed. "Kid, I made this world and I know who's who, you and your friends aren't really meant to be here yet here you are."
"So you know about … everything?" I asked. "Well not everything, just in this world, in our world, I'm just like you, a normal person with a passion." The way he said our world solidified my theory.
"You… You're from my world." I looked at him in awe. "I am, well… a version of me is." Stan scratched his cheek. "Basically I wrote myself into this story, so here I am."
I nodded at his words, that made some sense. "So do you know when we'll return to our world?" I asked. "Sad to say kid, you need to finish the story before you can leave." Stan explained. "You can't just leave in the middle, what would be the point?" I frowned. "I guess you're right." I looked at my hands.
"So what's your name kid?" Stan asked. "Izuku-" "Your real name kid." I paused for a moment.
"...Ethan." I answered. Hearing that name from my own lips for so long was strange but also… Freeing.
"Nice to meet you Ethan." Stan offered a hand to which I took and shook. "You already know who I am." I laughed, "You're Stan the Man Lee." "Ah, call me Stan." The old man waved the name off.
"So, how are things in the world you ended up in?" He asked. "Well… Things are going good, I changed things and for the better so far." I looked at the city of New York.
"That's great." He patted my shoulder. "... Stan, what would happen if I changed things here?" I asked. "Well then the changes would stay, it won't revert after you leave." Stan explained. "But if you're worried about making changes to the people around you then you have to think really hard about it." He continued.
I looked at the creator, waiting for him to continue. "Sure, you could stop the bad things from happening. Sure, you could keep everyone happy, but that's not always a good thing." He adjusted his cap.
"You can't have the good without the bad, bad things happen to help people grow." I looked down at the streets. "Without that growth, people won't move on, they won't have the tools to combat the future." Stan looked at me. "I know it's not exactly what you wanted to hear, kid, but that's the truth."
I imagined the stuff that came after Age of Ultron, if Civil war didn't happen, T'chaka would still be alive and Wakanda would still be hidden, Bucky won't be cured, Spiderman won't learn his lessons. Scott won't bring Janet back from the Quantum realm and then infinity war and endgame. If I erased something, then it might cause a huge backlash.
"I get it." I spoke softly. "I'll try my best to make good decisions." I promised. "That's all we can do." Stan responded.
We stood in silence as we looked at the streets of New York.
"I always wanted to meet you…" I started. "I can imagine, what year was it when you left?" I furrowed my brow in thought at Stan's question. "2021." I responded. "Haha amazing, how's everything going in the future?" Stan asked.
I rubbed the back of my neck. "Ummmm pandemic." Stan nodded slowly. "I see."
"You said you always wanted to meet me… When did it happen?" Stan was… calm about this. I bit my lip. "2018." I answered sadly.
Stan smiled. "Don't be sad, I lived an amazing life." He patted my back. I nodded.
"Yeah… oh umm." I patted my jacket until I found it, I took out my notebook and pen. "Can I have your autograph?" I asked. Stan simply chuckled. "Sure kid." He took the pen and signed a page on my notebook.
"There we go, now I gotta get going, I have a cameo!" He grinned at me, I nodded. "Will I ever see you again?" I asked. The old man simply smiled. "Enjoy the party True Believer, Plus Ultra." He raised his fist.
I grinned wide. "Excelsior." I returned as Stan left. I stayed there for a while longer before returning to the party, my mind clearer than earlier.
I arrived and couldn't help but laugh as Stan was escorted out who drunkenly said "Excelsior."
The guests left a few hours later and it was late at night with the Avengers, their friends, my friends and I, sitting on couches, talking and just having a good time.
"Oh whosoever be he worthy shall haveth the powa! Whatever man, it's a trick!" Clint accused Thor, as Mjorlnir was sitting on the table.
"Well please be my guest." Thor gestured to his hammer. I grinned at Clint as he went up to lift the hammer.
"Clint you've had a tough week, we won't hold it against you if you can't get it up." Tony smirked making everyone laugh, even Bakugo smirked as he drank his soda.
"You know I've seen this before right?" Clint pointed to Thor and tried to lift the hammer.
Clint huffed, "I don't know how you do it." I laugh at his poor attempt, the other avengers give it a try, Tony, Tony with the Iron man glove, Tony and Rhodey with their gloves, Banner, who pretended to hulk out.
Then it was Steve's turn. I knew that Steve was worthy but didn't want to be at the center of attention.
"Think he'll lift it?" Ochako asked as she was sitting next to me, "Let's see." I said as Steve attempted to "Lift" the hammer, it budge for a moment, Thor's expression changed to a serious one.
Steve gave up and Thor laughed. "Haha, nothing." I rolled my eyes. "Okay, let me show you how it's done." Bakugo got up with a smug smirk.
"Bakugo, we all know the answer to this question." I rolled my eyes as Bakugo tried to lift it, "Grrr fucking hammer!"
"Language!" Almost all the avengers chorus, making me spit my drink and laugh as well as Ochako and Melissa. "What was that?" I asked.
"Steve doesn't like that kind of language." Natasha smirked. "It was one time." Steve complained.
"Momo, give it a go, come on girl, represent me." Clint nudged Momo who blushed and got up, she grabbed the handle and pulled. "How is this even possible?" Momo strained and stopped. "Oh me next!" Ochako got up and grabbed the hammer. "No quirk." I pointed out, making the bubbly girl pout and lift her pinky fingers. "Fine."
Ochako tried to lift it. "It's like trying to lift a mountain." She gave up and sat down crossing her arms. I looked at Todoroki. "What about you?" I asked the heterochromic boy, He shook his head.
"What about you greenie?" Tony asked. I looked around and saw everyone looking at me, I sighed and got up. "Fine." I walked over to the hammer and grabbed the handle. I doubt I could…
I blinked as I felt no resistance to the small tug. I was worthy?
"... Deku are you okay?" Ochako asked, confused by my sudden rigged state. Natasha on the other hand realized that I didn't find it heavy. "Come on kid, lift it." She smirked widely.
I blushed a bit. "Umm don't be mad Thor…" I lifted the hammer and looked at it in surprise, everyone else was looking at me in shock. "... Kid gets to rule Asgard, I call being his advisor."
Thor smirked. "He doesn't count, he's not even from the same world." Everyone groaned at that, I couldn't help but chuckle as I looked at the hammer in my hand…
I was fanboying so hard right now. "DEKU!" I jumped as Bakugo growled walking up to me, "HAND ME THAT HAMMER!" I shrugged and gave it to him, sadly he was not worthy as the hammer fell with Bakugo still holding it, making everyone laugh.
I smiled. "Well you asked." "Clearly unworthy." Melissa smirked.
Suddenly there was a high pitch whine.
"Wooooorrrrrthyyyyyy." The voice sent shivers up my spine.
We all looked at the source to see an Iron Legion robot with a face carved into it, oil leaking from the missing parts. "How could you be worthy, you're all killers." I scowled at that.
"Sorry, I was asleep… Or I was a dream.." Tony tried to contact Jarvis, I slowly moved to Melissa's side.
"I was tangled in strings." The bot moved around. "Had to kill the other guy." I clenched my fist at the mention of Jarvis. "He was a good guy."
"You killed someone?" Steve asked, red flags now being waved as the avengers got ready to fight. "Wouldn't have been my first call." The bot responded.
"But down in the real world, we're faced with ugly choices." I looked at Bakugo who looked at me, I slowly nodded as he fixed the bot with a glare.
"Who sent you?" Thor asked, the bot repeated a recording of Tony. "I see a suit of armor around the world."
"Ultron." Bruce realized. "In the flesh, or.. No Not this christmas… But I'm ready."
"I'm on a mission." Ultron announced. Natasha decided to ask, "What mission?" Ultron looked at us.
"Peace of our time." The glass behind him shattered as Iron Legion bots started to attack.
"DIE!" Bakugo blasted the bots that got close and everyone else sprung into action. I pushed Melissa out of the way of a bot and looked around, I saw the bots in the lab. The Sceptre!
I looked at Shoto who had created a makeshift ice blade in his hand and was slashing at a bot. Questions later! "Protect Melissa!" He looked at me and nodded. I used blackwhip to tether myself up to the lab and burst through the window just in time to catch the bot trying to steal the scepter.
I grabbed hold of the handle and pulled hard but two more bots came to the first one's aid and pulled just as hard. Geez, Tony made these things strong!
I growled and used 30% to try and pry the scepter away.
The gem in the scepter glowed and responded to OFA, I gasped as I could hear the whispers again and images flashing before my eyes.
Ultron standing over my friends as they lay dead.
UA in ruins.
The world exploded as a meteor hit.
A golden gauntlet in the hands of a mad titan.
The face of Wanda with glowing red eyes.
I was snapped out of it as the bot punched me hard in the head and I collapsed with a growing headache.
I watched as the bots flew off, I cursed and slowly got up and made my way to the window leading to the lounge. "There's only one path to peace… The Avenger's extinction." Thor threw his hammer at Ultron, "I have strings but now I'm free…."
Not that it did anything…
"They took the scepter!" I said loudly as I leaned against the frame of the glass. Thor immediately took off after the Iron Legion robots.
I sat down with an ice pack on my head. Ochako held it with a look of concern on her face. My head was pounding like a drum and it fukcing hurt.
"Yes there was." Tony showed the interface of Jarvis, now ruptured. Melissa gasped and covered her mouth in horror.
I sighed as I thought about what I saw, why did I see those things, we have nothing to do with Infinity war… Thanos wasn't our concern… Too big for us.
UA in ruins… That could happen if I stood idle as All For One succeeded… Ultron… could happen if I didn't do something..
Wanda… why did the stone show me her…
I growled as Tony and Banner were arguing. "Will you guys SHUT UP!" I shouted.
Everyone quieted down as they looked at me. "The reason was because you're both idiots." I was in a lot of pain right now. "Look, you guys tampered with something that wasn't supposed to be tampered with and even then you did it wrong." I groaned.
"Oh, okay then explain it to us Mr. Knowitall." Tony crossed his arms. "... The AI was just born, did you try to isolate it?" I asked. Bruce looked at Tony and then shook his head. "No, we didn't even know it worked." He replied.
"Then there was your issue, it was connected to the internet, it was just born, it didn't have the opportunity to learn from a human mind, one that has filters." I glared. "You made the AI and the AI knew its mission, doesn't mean it's gonna understand it."
"It took the only source of information at the time, which was not filtered."
Tony looked at me for a moment before sighing. "... He's right." Bruce rubbed his forehead. "We messed up."
"Seriously?" Tony was too stubborn to admit he was wrong.
"This all could have been avoided if you didn't tamper with things you didn't understand." Thor stepped up.
"You know, it's funny because it's you who doesn't get why we need this." Tony got up on his face.
"Why do you need it?" I asked. Tony looked at me and scoffed. "I don't expect you to understand." Oh I did.. More than he realized.
I just allowed them to talk as my head was pounding from the migraine I was having. I looked at Melissa who looked at Tony with a frown.
"The Avengers were supposed to be different then SHIELD." I snorted a bit at that.
"Anyone remember when I carried a nuke through a wormhole? Saved New York?" Tony looked around. "Recall that?" He asked.
"A hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space. And we're standing 300 feet below it."
I looked at my friends who silently watched as the adults talked… well the man child more specifically.
"We're the Avengers, we can bust arms dealers all the livelong day but that up there. That's the endgame." Tony pointed at the roof, I looked at him as he mentioned the word Endgame.
"How are we gonna beat that?" He asked, Steve crossed his arms. "Together." I smiled at Cap, always the motivator.
"We'll lose." Tony retorted, "And we'll do that together too." Steve countered.
"Ultron is calling us out, I'd like to find him before he's ready for us, the world is a big place, let's start making it smaller."
I got up. "I'm gonna take a nap.." I really wanted to sleep, if I didn't have this headache I would have thought of something to add but right now, that Mind Stone took a lot out of me.
