Chapter 25
As we left the quinjet, Bakugo left his gauntlets and Ochako left her helmet and we walked to the house. I looked at the farm. "So… This is the safe house." I looked at Barton. "Kinda." He responded as he entered the house with us following behind
"Honey? I'm home." I smiled as Barton's wife came in, Clint greeting her with a hug and a kiss.
The kids came running in, happy to see their dad. I smiled, "This reminds me what we're fighting for." I whispered to Ochako who nodded in agreement, finding the whole scene heartwarming.
"Sorry for barging in on you." Steve apologized.
"Yeah, we would have called but we were too busy having no idea you existed." I rolled my eyes at Stark. "Probably wanted to keep this a secret from everyone." I told him.
"Yeah, Fury helped me with all this." Clint explained. "Kept it off of SHIELD'S files, I'd like to keep it that way."
"Secret's safe with us." I assured him with the others agreeing, Bakugo grunting.
"Oh ummm… wow, more than I expected." Barton's wife smiled nervously at us. "Oh umm I'm Izuku Midoriya." I introduced myself. "Momo Yaoyourozu." "Ochako Uraraka." Ochako said in English albeit a slightly broken accent. "Shoto Todoroki." "Tch… Katsuki Bakugo."
"Nice to meet you all." Laura had a light frown, oh… I understand now. Age…
I watched as Thor left and Cap went after him. I sighed softly. "Umm I'll be outside." I followed Cap.
An hour later, I was outside sitting on a stump, Ochako and Momo were inside the house, Bakugo was inside, helping with cooking, which surprised me but I didn't want to say anything.
Shoto and I were on the porch, I was looking on as Shoto had his hands set aflame, "It feels different." He said as he switched to ice, his hands now covered in frost. "I can control my ice just fine, fire is a bit more difficult."
I wrote down the information in my notebook. This was going on my actual notebook when I got back.
"Well, that means that you have to train with your fire more, you also have to experiment, I think there's more than what's on the surface." I poked his arm with my pencil.
"Okay.." Shoto got up. "I'm gonna see if the shower is free." I nodded and Shoto left. I looked at the two avengers chopping wood. I got up and walked over, I heard them talking.
"I don't trust a guy without a dark side." Tony said as he chopped another log. "Call me old fashioned." Steve gave Tony a look. "Well lets just say you haven't seen it yet."
"You know Ultron is trying to tear us apart right?" Tony asked. "I guess you'd know. Whether you tell us is a bit of a question." Steve chopped another log.
"Banner and I were doing research." "That would affect the team." "That would end the team, isn't that the mission, isn't that the why we fight?" Tony asked.
"No it's not." I finally spoke up." The two men looked at me. "The mission isn't to just end the fight, it's to save people in need." I looked at Tony.
"In my society, heroes are celebrities, they're stars, sometimes they forget what being a hero means." I crossed my arms, "I thought being an avenger meant that you save people that are in need."
Steve looked at Tony. "Putting a suit of armor around the world is just like putting a guard on a mall, to guard the world." I continued. "Something like that won't always help, it needs heroes, if you think that you can stop people from committing acts before they happen, things will go wrong. The Avengers will always be needed." I took a deep breath after I finished.
Tony stared at me, thinking about my words. Laura came up to Stark. "Umm excuse me Mr. Stark, could you please look at our tractor, I hope you don't mind."
Tony nodded, "Okay… Don't take from my pile." Tony went to the barn.
"... You know you're more mature for a teen your age." Steve commented, making me roll my eyes. "So says the 100 year old man" Steve smirked as I walked to the house.
"Hey umm." I stopped and looked at Laura. "Yeah?"
"I know I'm just being a bit… overbearing and motherly, but aren't you a bit young to be a hero?" Laura asked. I gave her a small smile. "I'm a hero in training." I said, "My friends and I are still in high school."
"... You all wanted to do this since you were kids?" She asked. "Even knowing the risks?" I stared at her for a moment, I was reminded of Inko. "Our world needs champions to keep the world safe, we knew what we signed up for." I explained. "And your parents?"
I thought back to my mom and Eri. "My mom wants me safe, but to also be happy, she knew I wanted to save people even when I was younger. She supports me and I love her." I smiled at Laura. "I know it's a little uncomfortable for you."
"It's fine, I just wanted to know." Laura returned my smile.
I went into the house and found Banner waiting by the stairs. "Hey, I was looking for you." He walked over.
"Oh what's up?" I asked. "I wanted to thank you." Bruce rubbed the back of his neck. "For helping subdue the big guy." He finished.
"It's no trouble, but you really should learn how to make peace with him." Bruce looked at me confused. "Make peace?"
"It looks like you and the big guy are at war with each other, but in the end, you're both in this together, whether you like it or not." I explained. "Try and understand the big guy." I walked away, leaving Banner with his thoughts.
After an hour, Tony came back with Nick Fury… I was screaming inside as Sam Jackson walked in with an eyepatch. "So these are the kids from another world." He looked at me and my friends.
Bakugo, who was eating his spicy curry, glared. "What's it to you dip-" I smacked him with black whip before he could curse. "OI!" "Kids Bakugo." I looked at the younger ones.
"... You were right, this one reminds me of Rogers." He looked at Tony. I rolled my eyes as Nick walked into the kitchen.
"Ultron took you folks out of play to buy himself some time." Nick started to say. "My contacts all say he's building something, the amount of Vibranium he made off with, I don't think it's just one thing."
Steve leaned against the frame. "What about Ultron himself?" Steve asked. "Oh he's easy to track." Nick answered. "He's everywhere, guys multiplying faster than a catholic rabbit." I snorted a bit, Ochako giggled next to me.
"It still doesn't get us an angle of his plans though." Nick poured himself some water. "What about the nuclear codes?" Momo asked. "He's still going after them, but he's not making any headway." Nick responded as he made himself a sandwich.
"I cracked the pentagon's firewall in high school on a dare." My friends looked at Tony in shock. I chuckled. "I'm honestly not surprised." I said.
"Well I contacted our friends in the nexus about that." Nick sliced his bread. "Nexus?" Steve asked.
"It's the world internet hub in Oslo." Banner answered. "Every bit of data flows through the fastest access on earth."
"So what did they say?" I asked. "He's still fixated on the missiles, but the codes are constantly being changed." Nick said.
"By whom?" Tony asked as a dart hit the dart board right next to his head, he looked at Clint who shrugged with a smug smile.
"Party's unknown." Nick admitted. "So we have an ally?" Natasha asked. "Ultron's got an enemy, that's not the same thing." Nick affirmed.
I smiled at that, "Still, I'd pay folding money to know who it is." Nick finished.
Tony stepped out of the line of fire of the dart board. "I might need to visit Oslo, find our Unkown."
"Well this is good times boss, but I was kinda hoping when I saw you, you'd have more than that." Natasha placed her head on her propped hand.
"I do, I have you." Nick confirmed, mentioning the Avengers.
"Back in the day, I had eyes everywhere, ears everywhere else." Nick walked through the room with his sandwich and drink in hand. "You kids had all the tech you could dream of." I looked at my friends who listened in fascination, I smiled.
I could imagine them thinking of the world when the Avengers first came to be, they were in the golden age of heroes.
"Now here we are, back on earth, with nothing but our wit and our will to save the world." He looked at us, "And a couple of superpowered munchkins." I gave Fury a pout. "Hey!" I exclaimed, offended.
"One of these munchkins can blow you to hell." Bakugo growled. "I've gotten worse threats from worse people, Sparky." Nick didn't seem fazed.
"Ultron said that the Avengers are the only thing between him and his mission, and whether he likes to admit it, his mission is global destruction." Nick looked around. "All this laid in a grave."
"So stand. Outwit the platinum bastard." Natasha gazed at Steve, "Steve doesn't like that kind of talk."
Steve gave Natasha a look. "You know what Romanoff." I chuckled as well as the other avengers.
"So what does he want?" Nick asked the billion dollar question. Steve gained a look of realization. "To become better, better than us, he keeps building bodies."
"Human bodies, the human form isn't efficient biologically, we're outmoded."
"Evolve." I spoke up. "What?" Tony looked at me, "He wants to evolve, become a better version of himself." I explained.
"Izuku's right… Has anyone had any contact with Helen Cho?"
We left Clint's house heading to Oslo.
As we flew, I went up to Bakugo and Shoto. "I need you two to stay with Stark and Banner." I told them. Bakugo narrowed his eyes.
"Like hell I'm stuck on babysitting duty." Bakugo crossed his arms. "No, Izuku's right, with your powers, you can't fully utilize them in the city." Captain Rogers agreed. "The ones who are coming with us are Midoriya, Yaoyourozu and Uraraka." He said.
Bakugo wanted to argue but a look from Steve shut him up, he crossed his arms. "Fine…"
"Wow, I can't believe he just agreed." Ochako whispered to Natasha who smirked. "Not many people can say no to Captain America." She responded.
"I'm fine with it, I don't think I can use my power properly for now." Shoto looked at his hands. "Still need to adjust?" I asked. Shoto nodded.
I took out my notebook and wrote it down.
We dropped off Banner, Stark, Bakugo and Todoroki at the Nexus center in Oslo two hours after.
I hoped things would go well.
Clint dropped us off near UGIN Genetics. My mask snapped over my mouth as me, Uravity, Creati and Cap entered the facility.
"Keep sharp, Ultron could be close." Cap instructed us as we rode the elevator up.
We exited the elevator and Ochako gasped to see bodies strewn around. I immediately went over and checked for a pulse, "He's still alive." I revealed. "Creati, Uravity, tend to the civilians." I ordered as I followed Cap to the room that was supposed to house the regeneration cradle.
I saw Helen Cho injured on the floor. I knelt next to her and put a hand on her wound. "Dr. Cho!" Cap knelt next to me and held her hand.
"He's uploading himself into the new body." Cho rasped. I gritted my teeth, "CREATI I NEED YOU HERE NOW!" I called.
"Where?" Cap asked her. Momo ran in and I moved my hands, letting her press against the wound. "The real power is in the cradle!" Helen held Cap's hand. "The gem, it's power is uncontainable." Helen gasped for breath. "You can't just blow it up."
I got up and activated my danger sense, I closed my eyes. "You have to get the cradle to Stark." Helen continued. "First I have to find it." Steve responded.
I could feel the mind stone close by, probably from when I touched the scepter and I saw those visions. "Won't be too hard, I can sense it." I told him. "Creati, you and Uravity will stay here and keep these people stable until help arrives." Steve ordered the girl, making her nod. "Got it."
"Dekiru, with me." I followed Cap out of the building and made our way to the overpass.
"Can you feel it?" He asked and I focused on the source, I scanned the streets and found what I was looking for. I pointed at the truck. "There." I looked at Cap and we nodded.
Once the truck was over us, Cap jumped off the overpass and onto the truck, rolling a bit from the impact. I leaped after him, landing on my feet.
I jumped as I heard a blast and ran to the edge of the truck where Steve was hanging on to the broken door. "Cap!" I shot out black whip, wrapped it around him and pulled him up to the roof. "Thanks." He patted my back.
Ultron flew into the air above us. "You know what's in that cradle?" I expanded my shield as Steve put his on his arm. "The power to make real change, and that terrifies you." I glared. "Not the change I want to make." I commented as Steve threw his shield at Ultron and I shot a few air bullets making him dodge and shot beams at us.
I dodged and shot more air bullets at Ultron as Cap was throwing his shield to bring him down.
I charged at him and slid under him, I shot black whip letting it wrap around the robot's leg, pulling myself up and holding him close to me. Cap threw his shield and it was lodged in Ultron's chest.
The robot roared, breaking free, he punched Cap onto the front of the truck and turned to me with his hands raised. I instinctively raised my shield to block his beam, but my shield was starting to become hotter, my eyes widened as the shield was glowing orange. It was melting!
Before I could react, I felt a force push me off the truck and onto the road, I rolled a bit and recovered, I looked at my wrist and pulled the gauntlet off immediately as it was almost melting. Since when could Ultron do that?!
I moved out of the way of a moving car, I ran up to Cap's shield and strapped it onto my arm. Focus on the mission, don't nerd out. "Clint, I could use a lift." I called into coms.
"Coming to you." Nat called through coms, "Look behind you." I did so and saw Nat on the motorbike, speeding towards me. "Got room for one more?" I smirked and saw her extend her arm, I ran to her and grabbed her arm, pulling me with her, I swung behind her and held onto her stomach. "He's taking on Ultron alone." I told her.
"Don't worry, we'll catch up." Natasha accelerated. I held on tight as we weaved through traffic.
"Which way?" Nat asked. "Hard right… Now!" The hard turn was a bit much for me to handle. "Hold on!" She called as we made sharp turns and went through a small alleyway.
As we left the alley, we were in front of the Gen truck. I saw Cap struggling against Ultron. "Steady!" I called and shot a tendril out and grappled off the bike into the air.
"Special Delivery!" I threw the shield at Cap who bashed Ultron and I landed behind the robot and gave a 15% punch to Ultron's rib.
Just as Ultron was about to counter, Cap attacked with a shield bash. I grinned as I fought alongside my favorite hero.
We went back and forward, Ultron couldn't focus on both of us.
I saw the quinjet flying in close and rolled out of the way just in time as the quinjet fired on Ultron, He glared and the guards left the truck going after the jet.
I watched as Cap threw Ultron against the support pillar of the overpass and tackled him into the train.
I whipped myself along for the ride.
"Can you and Dekiru keep him occupied?" Nat asked, I rolled my eyes. "What do you think we've been doing?" I asked as I looked at the civilians. I didn't know any korean…
"Get out, go!" I rushed to the door opening it, the people understood my words and left through the door as quickly as possible, that or the killer robot in the same car fighting an american hero.
I caught Ultron's hand as he was about to attack and felt him pull me to him. I choked as he had his hand around my throat.
"There's nothing about you anywhere, I don't like wildcards." He raised his fist as I closed my eyes preparing for the hit.
Suddenly a blur slammed into Ultron, letting me go. I coughed and looked up to see Pietro standing next to a panting Cap.
I moved back and Wanda came up and used her powers to block Ultron's path. "Please… Don't do this." The robot pleaded. "What choice do we have.." Wanda responded.
Ultron looked pissed as he aimed at Pietro who moved out of the way before Ultron fired a beam through the train.
Ultron knocked the door to the train off and flew away. I looked through the hole which led to the control car. "Guys, he destroyed the controls!" I ran up to check if I could stop the train.
Cap ran up next to me. "I lost Ultron, he's heading your way!" Cap inspected the controls. "Nothing." I cursed as I looked ahead. "Cap…"
Steve looked up and saw the dead end.
I ran back to the passengers. "BRACE!" I shouted, gesturing to hold onto whatever they could. I stumbled as the train broke through the dead end and was now on the streets.
I got up. "Do you have a visual on Nat?" Clint demanded. "GO!" Cap shouted as he blocked the debris coming through the hole up front with his shield.
I looked at the twins. "There are civilians in the way." I told Pietro who nodded and ran out to help.
Cap looked at Wanda. "Can you stop this thing?" He asked her. Wanda looked shocked but nodded.
Wanda used her powers to activate the breaks of the train, I ran out the door and groaned, this was gonna suck. "Dekiru what-" I didn't hear Steve finish as I leaped out of the train and grabbed the last car with Black whip.
I dug my feet into the concrete and pushed OFA into Overdrive as I was dragged by the train. I could feel my iron soles scraping against the concrete.
After a while, the train finally stopped. I let go and sighed in relief. "It's fucking Mirko all over again…" I limped to the front of the car. "I need a minute." Pietro sat on a stool, exhausted. "I'm tempted not to give you one." Cap exited the car walking towards the twins.
"Cap, they're not with Ultron anymore." I defended them. "You can't be sure." He looked at me and I crossed my arms. "I trust them, they saved lives." I looked at the train.
Wanda looked at us. "The cradle, did you get it?" She asked.
"Stark will take care of it." Steve assured her. Wanda frowned. "No he won't." She denied.
Steve looked at her for a moment. "You don't know what you're talking about." He told her. "Stark's not crazy."
"He will do everything to make things right." Wanda countered. I bit my lip. "Look… I know you don't trust Stark… but I think you should trust my friend, she won't let him do anything crazy." I said.
Wanda looked at me. "And how do you know she can stop him?" I stared at Wanda. "I didn't say stop, I mean she will help him do the right thing." I glared.
"Ultron can't tell the difference between saving the world and destroying it." She stepped closer. Her eyes turned red. "Where do you think he gets that?" I looked away and sighed. "Okay how do we get back?" I asked Steve.
Melissa was looking at her little project with pride. "Thanks Momo." She walked out of the room and found Stark and Banner looking over the cradle with Clint walking out.
Bakugo and Shoto were outside currently resting after not having any rest for a while.
"I can work on tissue degeneration while you fry whatever program Ultron has in it." Bruce tapped on the cradles control pad. "About that…" Tony rubbed the back of his neck.
Melissa blinked. "Mr. Stark… are you suggesting we…" Tony doesn't look at her. "You are!" She looked at him in disbelief.
"No." Bruce shook his head. "You two have to trust me." Tony looked at Bruce. "I kinda don't." Bruce shook his head.
"Mr. Stark, this is something Ultron created, I don't think we can just turn it against him." Melissa walked to the cradle and looked at the percentage. "It's 84% complete!" Melissa said.
"See, she gets it!" Bruce pointed at Melissa.
"Okay look, our ally, the person protecting the nuclear launch codes." Tony smirked. "I found him." With a flick of his small pad, Jarvis was revealed. "Hello Dr. Banner, Ms Shield." Jarivs greeted.
Melissa gasped. "Jarvis!" She smiled for the first time in a while. "Ultron didn't go after Jarvis because he was angry." Tony explained.
"... He went after Jarvis because he was afraid of him." Melissa realized. "Correct." Tony smiled. "Jarvis went underground, scattered, dumped his memories, but not his protocols." Tony looked at Bruce.
"He didn't even know he was in there until I pieced him together." Melissa looked at Jarvis then at the cradle. "So you want to put him into the body." She looked at Tony. "Do you think it'll work?" She asked.
"... you want me to help you put Jarvis into this thing?" Bruce looked at Tony incredulously. "What, no, I want to help YOU put him into this thing." Tony specified.
"You think that Jarvis' operational matrix can beat Ultron?" Bruce asked. Melissa stepped up. "From what Mr. Stark said, he's already been doing that, this is the base we need to create a counterpart to Ultron!" Melissa said.
Tony pointed at her. "This is the opportunity. We can create Ultron's perfect self, without any of the homicidal glitches he thinks are his winning personality." Tony walked to Melissa's side wrapping an arm around her. "I believe it's worth a go." Jarvis agreed, Melissa nodded with a smile.
Bruce rubbed his face. "I'm stuck in a time loop, this is where it went wrong!" Tony walked up to Bruce putting a hand on his science bro's shoulder. "I know whatever you're gonna say, but they've already seen it."
"We're mad scientists, we're monsters buddy, we gotta own it, make a stand." Tony said. "And if things go wrong, I'll be there to pull the plug." Melissa was excited, creating something like this, scary but it was a chance of a lifetime.
"... Fine." Banner agreed.
