To tell the truth, Harry had no idea what Heavens Asunder was supposed to do. All he had was a cryptic warning, and the name of the move. It was probably related to Lightning Qi, but as for the specifics, he had no way to know. At this moment, all he could do was put his life on a gamble.
But he could rest assured, because the Nameless Technique never let him down.
Within his body was the mysterious Nameless Seed, resting in his navel, surrounded by his nine Qi Seas. The Sea of Lightning was one of the two seas located above, and was filled with a destructive energy, one that made Harry both nervous and afraid.
And now, he was unleashing all this energy out his body!
The effects were immediate. The air around his body began crackling, and Lockhart withdrew his hand and leapt back, having been given a nasty jolt. He stared at Harry with stunned expression – and then his eyes grew wide at what happened next.
RRRRUUUUMMMMMBBBLLLEEEE!
Kakakaka! KAKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKA!
BOOOOOOOOOM!
There was a deafening explosion sound, and then all of the energy within the Sea of Lightning was violently forced out of Harry's body. It pushed itself out along every path it could. Lightning Qi raced through Harry's meridians, then through the flesh of his body as it struggled to escape. For a brief moment, Harry's body was positively electrified, as he felt millions of jolts of electricity rush through him.
Then the energy exited his body, forming a thick rope of yellow light that wrapped around him, like a whip made of lightning. It turned into a large pillar of light, with Harry standing right in the center, and quickly expanded.
One meter... three meters... ten meters... the pillar of light was threatening to overtake the room, and Gilderoy Lockhart was huddled against the far wall, scared at the sight before him. His Magic Spirit, the horrifying mouth, got a taste of lightning and immediately shrank back.
"L-look, James, stop what you're doing, ok? We can discuss things, how does that sound? H-haha?"
"Fuck you!" Harry shouted back, over the crackling noises.
"Who wants to discuss anything with you? Go to Hell!"
"ARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH" Harry roared, and sent the last bit of Lightning Qi through his body!
The pillar of lightning finally stopped expanding, and then shot upwards, towards the Heavens. It hit the ceiling, and effortlessly pierced through the layers of brick and stone. Whatever reinforcements the formation master added to the room were entirely ineffective, as the entire building began to shake and crumble.
Bang! Bang! BANG!
A shower of rock and debris fell from above, and Harry ran for his life, covering his head with both arms. His Sea of Lightning was completely drained, unknown when it would be full again. He didn't have the time to worry about that right now.
He leapt left and right, dodging the huge chunks of stone that had formed the crumbling building. The ground shook beneath him, and above him, a shower of pebbles descended. After what felt like an hour, but really was just a few long minutes, the world stopped collapsing around him, and Harry got up and looked around.
The surroundings were unrecognizable. The entire city hall was gone, now just a large pile of rubble. Only one wall remained standing. What had once been a magnificent building in the center of Locked Heat City was now nothing more than scattered debris.
And all around the debris were the residents of the city, attracted over by the deafening noise. It seemed like the whole town was standing there, the city marshal and his son at the front, staring at the former city hall with open mouths.
'That – that was Heavens Asunder?' Harry had a similar expression on his face. This sort of destructive power – it was simply terrifying!
Then a movement caught his eye, and he saw Gilderoy Lockhart rise to his feet, shaking a large piece of rubble off him as he did. His Magic Spirit was nowhere to be seen – perhaps he had withdrawn it instinctively. He took in the scene around him, and an expression of pure disbelief was plastered all over his face.
"My portraits..." he muttered. "No, no, not my portraits!"
He dove into the rubble, flinging pieces left and right until he found the corner of a picture frame. With a heave, he yanked out and held half of a portrait. The bottom part of it was still intact, depicting a pair of legs, while the top half was ripped beyond recognition. Lockhart mutedly stared at the ruined picture, then at his surroundings.
"You – you – James – how dare you ruin my portraits!" he screamed into the sky, and fixed his glare onto Harry. His hair and clothing were all disheveled, nothing like his earlier immaculate appearance. The friendly smile was completely gone, replaced by a look of rage. A piece of rubble had slid across his face, leaving a few bloody scars on his cheek.
'Damn it, this guy's still alive?' Harry swore. If Heaven's Asunder couldn't take Lockhart out, then what was he supposed to do? The gap between levels was just too great – even if he used all his power, he wasn't even close to the strength of the 9th level.
'A fight to the death it is then.'
But even as he readied himself, the world suddenly turned dark. Harry stilled, and looked up.
Humongous, rolling thunderclouds were appearing above his head, forming out of thin air. Very quickly, they covered the sky above the city hall, casting the area into a sudden gloom. Whatever battle was about to break out between Harry and Lockhart paused as both people looked upwards, shell-shocked.
Directly above where the two of them were standing was the center of the black thunderclouds. The clouds swirled around this point, giving the impression of a black eye that formed in the Heavens, staring down at the humans below.
Thunder cracked and little arcs of electricity raced along the undersides of the clouds, and all of a sudden, Harry was struck by a peculiar sense of deja vu.
'Don't tell me... that's the Heavenly Tribulation again?!'
There was no doubt about it. That same shade of black, same destructive willpower, same seething anger Harry could sense was pervading the atmosphere – it was definitely the Heavenly Tribulation.
'Then, is the purpose of Heaven's Asunder to draw down the Heavenly Tribulation? Or is this just a side effect?'
'You damned Nameless Technique, you always leave out the important part!'
Harry had the confidence to survive many attacks – but not this kind. Lightning wasn't something he could defend against, and the pain of being struck by it was immense. There was only one thought in his mind – 'I'm out of here!'
He turned to run, just as he felt the familiar locking feeling settle upon him, like the world had stilled and he was frozen in amber. But this time, he was able to resist, slightly. Instead of being completely locked in, he was able to slowly move, like a fly trapped in honey.
And at the same time, the clouds above split apart, and a deadly bolt of lightning shot directly at Harry.
CRACK! BOOOOOOOM!
"AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH" Harry let out a scream of pain as the lightning struck him. This time, it was even more powerful than before.
That bolt of lightning sent Harry off his feet, tossing him in the air and throwing him against the ground. All the wind was knocked out of him, and though the impact didn't hurt, the lightning most definitely did. His body spasmed as every cell tingled in pain.
Harry twitched on the ground a few times, before shakily getting back up. His knees wobbled, and he clutched a large piece of rubble for support.
Washing Marrow!
His injuries healed in an instant, charred flesh magically becoming anew before his eyes. Thankfully, due to having completed the Medium Accomplishment for Washing Marrow, his healing power progressed by leaps and bounds. Unfortunately, it didn't lessen the pain he felt.
'I can't fight Lockhart like this! I have to get away!'
But his thoughts were stilled when he noticed that this time, the thunderclouds didn't seem to be receding. Nor had that terrifying energy dissipated. If anything, they seemed to be getting stronger.
Another arc of electricity shot along the underside of the cloud, accompanied by small cracks of thunder. It looked like the thundercloud was charging again, and the next moment, Harry could feel another discharge coming up.
"What the – it's not over?" Harry screamed.
Last time, there was only one!
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
The next lightning bolt caught Harry right in the face, and he screamed in anguish. The smell of burnt flesh filled the air, and he was tossed a hundred meters, slamming into a random building in the city. Harry groaned in pain, and he was sure if he looked in the mirror, his head would be scorched black.
'What the hell is this? There was only one last time!' he thought through the pain.
"Haha, it's over for you now, James!" a sudden loud and nasty voice could be heard. It was the man from the restaurant, who was watching Harry being punished by lightning with glee.
Originally, he was furious over how James would get off without even a punishment, but now seeing him suffering like a whipped dog, his heart immediately felt better. A massive smirk was on his face, and he felt incredibly refreshed.
"Even lightning is striking you! You're so wicked that the world is punish– "
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
What happened next caught everyone by surprise.
The next bolt of lightning came out the cloud, but this time, instead of shooting at Harry, it shot directly towards the taunting man. It reached him in a blink of an eye, then passed through his body like a deadly lance.
" - ing you! Huh?"
The man's eyes widened, and the next moment, he collapsed, scorched and dead. He didn't even know how he had died. That hateful taunting expression was still burned into his face.
Harry blinked, and rubbed his eyes.
Yep, the man was dead.
"NOOOOO!" the city marshal roared. He ran over to his son, and cradled him in his arms.
"NOOOOOOOOO! HOW?"
"BOY, THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!" he screamed, turning to point at Harry. His face was twisted in rage, and the next moment, a massive amount of energy erupted from his body, shooting towards Harry like a hurricane.
And then, the clouds in the sky grew even larger, and the anger Harry could sense in the atmosphere increased tenfold!
BOOOM!
An enormous strike of lightning, much thicker than the bolts from before, blew out the thundercloud and hit the city marshal directly on the head!
The world had turned dark, but this bolt of lightning clearly lit up the city for miles around. In that flash of light, Harry clearly saw the city marshal freeze in surprise, and then topple over. Smoke rose from his scorched body.
He too, died.
In a flash, Harry understood what was happening.
This lightning, or Heavenly Tribulation, originally was targeting him and wanted him dead. But the strength of the lightning seemed to match his own cultivation level, which explained why these strikes were stronger than the one he experienced when entering the Qi Absorption Realm.
These strikes would have been more than enough to kill any normal cultivator at the 2nd level of the Qi Absorption Realm, but thankfully, Harry was far from a normal cultivator. His tough physical body along with the ability take pain and heal wounds allowed him to survive.
But it seemed that whenever someone else interfered with the tribulation, the tribulation would grow angry, and switch targets. When the man from the restaurant yelled at Harry, he too was struck with lightning that rivaled the 2nd level of the Qi Absorption Realm – and he was just a normal man, so he immediately died.
Next, the man's father tried to interfere. He was at the 6th level of the Qi Absorption Realm, and the lightning increased its strength accordingly. As long as they acted towards Harry, they too would be caught in the tribulation. Harry didn't know why things worked like that, or how it was even possible – it was almost as if this lightning was sentient – but he couldn't ignore the facts in front of his eyes.
Harry nervously looked back up. Though the lightning took care of two of his enemies for him, there was just one problem.
The bolts of lightning were now enough to kill anyone at the 6th level of the Qi Absorption Realm, and even though the man had died, it didn't seem to be getting weaker.
CRACK CRACK CRACK BBBOOOOOOOOOMMMM!
This next strike shot at Harry like an arrow, one too fast to be avoided. He only saw the belly of the cloud glow, and the next thing he knew, it was here. Harry let out the loudest scream of his life.
He thought the last strike had hurt, but that was nothing. This one was ten times, even a hundred times, more painful.
'Uggghhhhh' Harry only managed a groan, even as his body healed itself.
'I need to get away from – oh wait... I got it!'
Through the haze of pain, he had a sudden stroke of inspiration. This was how he'd get rid of Lockhart!
"Gilderoy Lockhart!" Harry turned towards the shocked man, and yelled at the top of his lungs.
"Even if I die today, I'm going to drag you down with me!"
And with full speed, he ran directly towards where Gilderoy Lockhart was hiding!
Lockhart gaped at Harry, and his face changed colors. Without the slightest hesitation, he turned tail to flee.
"Y-you, James, get away from me!" he yelled.
Lockhart was no idiot, and he too realized what was happening. He could sense the lightning got stronger, and arrived at the same conclusion as Harry.
If he, a cultivator at the 9th level of the Qi Absorption Realm, used his strength to deal with James, then the lightning would increase in power, and also start attacking him. There was no way he wanted that to happen. And if James caught up to him, then the lightning would attack him too.
His only option was to flee.
As he fled, his heart was filled with stifled anger. Since when in the history of the entire cultivation world had a man at the 2nd level of the Qi Absorption Realm sent a man at the 9th level running away? It was the utmost humiliation!
If the situation hadn't been so perilous, it may have been funny.
"Why are you running, Gilderoy?" Harry shouted as he chased.
"Didn't you defeat all those werewolves and vampires, hags and yeti? Why are you running away from someone at the 2nd level of the Qi Absorption Realm?"
"James, you're despicable! Screw you!" Lockhart yelled back.
"Despicable? That's rich, coming from you!" Harry laughed, just as he caught up to Lockhart.
Right at that moment, thousands of little arcs of electricity appeared on the belly of the clouds, a clear sign another strike was imminent.
"Get away!" Lockhart screamed, and out of reflex, he lashed out at Harry with his full strength.
The next instant, his face paled as he realized what he did. Lockhart withdrew his power as quickly as he could, but it was too late.
The thundering above entered a deadly crescendo, and the lightning clouds increased by tenfold again. Before they were just covering the area above the center of the city, but now they were covering the entire city, which suddenly gained a gloomy overcast. A swath of them compressed into a single, tightly-packed cloud, rolling and boiling over. Both Harry and Lockhart's faces whitened as they looked up at the deadly thundercloud.
BAM!
BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM!
Lightning poured down like drops of rain, indiscriminately striking across the Locked Heart City. It was like some kind of god of thunder had been angered, and was taking it out on the ground below.
BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM!
And in the center of it all – a massive lightning bolt, so large and wide that Harry never imagined such a thing could even exist, smashed into Gilderoy Lockhart. And since Harry was clutching onto Lockhart, he received a large dose of electricity too!
"AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" Lockhart and Harry let out simultaneous screams as they were both blasted apart.
For a long time Harry's vision turned white, that flash of lightning too bright for him to see anything else. It was seared onto his eyeballs as the world spun around him, and he finally crashed into something and landed on the ground. It took all Harry had to remain conscious. His head rung as he shakily stood back up.
"Mmmmmmbllllruuuuughhhhhh," Harry groaned. Luckily for him, Lockhart had been there to take the brunt of the attack. At least 80% of that strike had been absorbed by Lockhart's body. If not for that, he doubted he would have survived it. After all, that last strike was powerful enough to kill most people at the 9th level of the Qi Absorption Realm, and he was still quite far from that level.
"Is he dead?" Harry shakily got up, and looked in all directions for Gilderoy Lockhart. He was nowhere to be found.
Then from across the street, a figure stumbled out the ruins of a house. It was Lockhart, badly singed, with half the hair on his head scorched to embers. Burns and cuts riddled his whole body, and it looked like his left arm was badly broken.
"James, the enmity between us is irreconcilable!" he roared. "I swear I'll kill you!"
Then having said that, he collapsed to his knees, and spat out a mouthful of blood.
"Gilderoy!" the formation master ran over, and helped him up to his knees.
"We have to go! The next lightning bolt is coming!"
Lockhart looked back up at the sky, and paled even further. Any thoughts of getting revenge on James fled his mind as he contemplated the consequences of being struck by this lightning again.
"James, you ruined a decade of my life's work! The next time we meet, I definitely won't give you a good death!"
The formation master took out two exquisite looking pendants, and activated them by pouring his Qi in. There was a bright flash of light, a loud POP!, and then both he and Gilderoy Lockhart were gone.
A moment later, the bolt of lightning struck where Lockhart had been kneeling. The house Lockhart had crashed into was shattered to bits, and a massive spiderweb crack was etched onto the ground. Harry stared at the destruction with numb horror – if he had been hit by that, then his life would have been over.
Thankfully, that signaled the end. The destructive energy and anger in the air dissipated, though Harry could still feel a trace of it all around him, everywhere the lightning had struck. The thunderclouds shrank and thinned until they finally vanished, letting the sunlight through again. If not for the ruins... it was almost like that apocalyptic scene never happened.
Everyone stood in stunned silence, as none of them could find the words to say. The city hall was completely destroyed. And as for all the buildings around the city hall... they were also completely destroyed. In fact, the entire Locked Heart City stood in ruins. It looked like an earthquake struck right after a hurricane passed through town. Further, the strongest members of the city were either dead, or fled for their lives. And the cause for all of it was that chubby man in the horrible robes, standing in the middle with singed hair and a dazed expression.
Harry too looked around the wreckage, before finally picking himself up.
"So, that's Heaven's Asunder," he muttered to himself. "With just a thought, I destroyed Locked Heart City."
"Now, onward to the next one."
