Shit.
Shit shit shit.
He screwed up.
It'll never be okay now. He ruined it. He ruined them. Looking back and forth between the guy and Lucy, he loosens his grip and turns away, unable to look at his best friend in the eyes. Those gorgeous honey colored eyes.
He shook his head, momentarily forgetting his worries.
"Sorry. I'll go now." With his head held low, he walked away faster than when he had arrived at the scene, 'accidentally' shoving the guy against the lockers one last time.
He didn't look up. Not once, not even after he heard people laughing, or pointing at him. Didn't look up when people asked if he was okay, or moved out of his way with slight fear in their eyes.
It was over, he ruined the best thing that ever happened to him. He could never look at her again. He embarrassed her, embarrassed himself, practically confessed in front of the whole school.
He found himself in front of the school, and strolled over to sit under the faded pink cherry blossom tree. Their favorite place. Lucy loved the pale pink buds, especially scattered across the grass in the spring . She would tell him that it reminded her of his hair. And he loved it too. The tree reminded him of the faint blush on his Lucy's pale face when talking about the things she was passionate about. It was their spot. Their safe haven from the rest of the world. They'd eat their lunch there. Or on some occasions, Natsu would lay his head on Lucy's lap while she read to him and played with his hair. Any stranger would mistake them for a couple. Students knew their chaotic relationship but never really interfered except for the few brave souls who tried taking her out. Their friends even had betting pools for when they'd start dating, started by Levy, Lucy's short blue haired best friend.
Leaning his head against the tree trunk and staring up at the pale blue sky, Natsu sighed. He closed his eyes and the first thing he saw was his beautiful best friend.
Oh the misery.
How could he face her now. He'd just have to move. Start a new life. But it would be difficult to convince his parents. And Wendy, she wouldn't want to leave her friends over Natsu's idiocy. But then what could he do now? He was almost sure Lucy hated him. How couldn't she. She was probably thinking of the different ways to murder him right about now-
"Natsu?"
Great now he's even hearing her voice.
"Natsu, wake up."
Slowly opening his eyes, he saw her. His precious best friend. The girl-no, the woman of his dreams. The person he'd drop anything for in an instant if she asked. The one he'd spent the rest of his life with.
"Uhh…hi." Natsu replied awkwardly, rubbing at the back of his head, taking mental note of the still slight bump from his previous encounter with Gray.
"So…" Lucy said, plopping herself beside Natsu under their favorite tree. "Care to explain what all of that was about?" She looked up at him with a shy smile. God he loved her smile, he would do anything in the world to keep her smiling like that.
"I don't know what you're talking about Luce."
"Don't play dumb with me Natsu Dragneel." Lucy pinched his ear, puffing her cheeks out and scrunching up her nose, much to Natsu's pain, and pleasure.
She's so beautiful.
With a heavy sigh, he stood up, leading her up with him as well. Looking down into her beautiful forest-like eyes he could stare into forever, he subconsciously began rubbing circles on her hands with his thumbs.
Were his hands sweaty? Am I shaking?
Lost in thought once again, he stayed quiet. It wasn't supposed to be like this. They were supposed to be best friends forever. He's gonna lose her. He'll never see her mesmerizing smile again.
He'll never feel the warmth of her hugs.
Listen to the sound of her voice.
Hold her small delicate hand in his fairly larger one.
He'll-
"Natsu?" Her voice sent him out of his spiral. Of course. She always calmed him down.
"Right. Sorry. It wasn't supposed to be like this. I wasn't supposed to say anything, at least not yet until I was 100 percent sure. Not that I'm not 100 percent sure about you! I am I promise! Only you. But maybe you're not 100 percent about me. Or maybe you are and I'm just crazy. Or maybe you're not and I was right and I'll lose you and Lucy the last thing I ever want is to lose you-" He was rambling. He was going off the rails. He didn't know what he was saying.
A soft hand slowly caressed his cheek. Her smile. She was smiling at him, with the faint pink blush that reminded him of the Cherry blossom tree. He took her hand and nuzzled his cheek into it further. He let out a shaky breath and continued.
"Lucy Heartfilia. My best friend. My supporter. My rock. My Luce. I'm in love with you. And I have been for the longest time." He holds his breath, studying her face. Her eyes were starting to subtly swell with tears, her glossed plump lips were slightly parted. Her faint pink blush was darker. He took it as a sign to continue, "I know I'm not like the guys you read about in your romance novels. I'm not smart, I'm not romantic, I'm a chaotic mess all the time and I'm slightly stupid and oblivious, I'm fully aware of that, and I know I eat sloppily and make a mess of blankets in your room and I know I let happy pee in your shoes sometimes," at this, his precious Lucy lets out an ear pleasing giggle. He smiles and keeps going, happy she's enjoying his unplanned confession.
"But despite it all. I would do anything for you. I'd burn the world down if you asked. I'll take you on dates and I'll play with your hair and make you smile that gorgeous smile that makes my stomach do backflips everytime I see it. I know I can make you the happiest woman in the world if you let me. I won't let you down. I understand if this is sudden and maybe you don't want to ruin this friendship and believe me I would have confessed sooner but I was terrified I'd lose you because the last thing I want is losing the person that makes me feel the way no one has made me feel before. I'm in love with you Luce, my Luce."
It's quiet for a moment
Oh no.
It's quiet.
"Lucy-" Before he knew it he was on the ground. He opened his eyes and saw a silhouette, almost as if she was an angel. Her golden hair slightly moving in the wind, her big brown eyes soaked in tears. She leaned down, slowly kissing her idiot best friend. He was shocked, to say the least.
Lucy was kissing him. HIS Lucy was kissing HIM. He closed his eyes and held her face in place. Slowly moving their lips in sync before parting.
"I love you too, you big dummy"
Were his ears deceiving him?
Did he hear her right?
Lucy Heartfilia, his Lucy Heartfilia, loved him back? Loved Natsu Dragneel?
"You…what?"
"I said I love you. I'm in love with you Natsu Dragneel, now shut up and kiss me again." And so he listened to his angel. It was the least he could do.
They stayed laying under the tree for a little while longer. Cherry blossoms began slowly falling. One landing on Lucy's head, making it look like she had a small crown. Natsu chuckled, admiring her beauty.
"So you're just not gonna ask me to be your girlfriend?"
SHIT.
After the confession and the surprise kiss, he completely forgot to ask her to be his girlfriend!
"Crap im so sorry. Uh. Lucy Heartfilia, will you be my girlfriend…please?" He reached for her hair, delicately plucking the cherry blossom from where it sat, handing it to her as a token of his love.
She gladly accepted, "Of course I'll be your girlfriend Natsu." She gave him a smile. The smile he loved oh so much. He smiled back, soaking in the moment. He leaned down to kiss her before he felt something on his nose.
It was a cherry blossom. It landed on his nose right as he was about to kiss his girl.
Lucy laughed, music to his ears. He watched as her figure was surrounded by the beautiful cherry blossoms, and the sound of her heartwarming laughter filling the space around them. He loved her. His Luce.
