Harry let out a sigh of relief when the door opened revealing an empty stairwell.
"Alright kid, watch this doorway and if anything comes down these stairs blast 'em like you did that raptor," Muldoon said as he started moving up the stairs, his shotgun held to his shoulder, aimed up the stairwell.
"Try and relax, this shouldn't take long," Dr Grant said as he tried to copy what Mr Muldoon was doing only to stumble on the stairs.
"It should have been me going, Alan can't hit the broad side of a barn," Dr Sattler said worriedly.
"Harry listened closely up the stairwell and had just got to where he was starting to relax when Dr Grant called down.
" We're clear up here!"
Harry didn't need telling twice and practically ran up the staircase, Lex close n his heels.
Harry stepped into the large room full of computers and looked around, the big round glass window that led into the hallway was busted out.
"They found their own way out," Dr Grant said catching Harry's attention.
"Ma-maybe they were just here for the babies," Lex said nervously as she eyed the broken windows.
"Alright Ms Murphy, let's see what you can do with our systems," Mr Muldoon said as he exited a room on the other side of the control room that was propped open with a chair and moved the chair, the door automatically closing and locking with an electronic 'beep.'
"Dr Grant I want you to watch that window, if anything not human tries to come through, shoot it," Muldoon said as he safetied his own firearm and took a seat behind a computer terminal.
"Harry, run downstairs and tell Ellie to give Mr Arnold a walkie," Dr Grant said as he handed the one from his pocket to Lex.
"No need, I already got Mr Arnold set up," Dr Sattler said as she entered the room followed by Mr Hammond.
"Good but you two should be in the bunker," Dr Grant said.
"So should you," Ellie said as she noticed the blood running down his arm.
"I'll be fine," Alan said as Mr Arnold's voice sounded over the radio.
Harry wandered over to Mr Muldoon and saw he had pulled up the surveillance cameras and was looking over the ones inside the complex.
"Are there any in the building?" Harry asked.
"No, well not on this level. We only have cameras on the high-security areas in the building so they could be downstairs," Muldoon answered as he switched to the outside cameras that were spread out around the complex. There were nine pictures on the screen in a three-by-three configuration.
"There! Do you see that?" Harry exclaimed as he spotted something dart across the top of the camera in the middle of the middle row and pointed to it.
"Camera C-five, that's on the Northeast side of the complex," Muldoon muttered as another outline that was unmistakably a velociraptor darted across the screen again.
"Harry watched the screen, in the background he heard Mr Arnold's voice issuing through the radio as Lex typed away on the keyboard, a look of concentration on her face.
Harry saw that Dr Sattler had taken the shotgun from Dr Grant and was standing watch over the broken window while Dr Grant reapplied bandages to the seeping wound on his arm.
"Damn,!" Mr Muldoon exclaimed pulling Harry's attention to the screen.
Harry saw four raptors were stalking toward the door of the visitors centre, they sniffed the air for a moment before they made a beeline for the entrance. Or rather, what was left of the entrance after the Baryonyx had smashed its way in last night.
Even from the tiny little screen, Harry could make out their reddish-brown colour and the black striping down their backs putting him in mind of a tiger. Their heads were tong oval shaped and narrow with slender bodies and long powerful looking arms. Their heads bobbed up and down as they walked and their powerful tails stuck out rigidly behind them.
"We've got incoming, how are you doing, miss?" Muldoon asked.
"I think this is the sub-protocol to disable communications," Lex said distractedly as she continued to type.
"Alright, four raptors are coming in the main entrance of the visitors centre," Muldoon said as the raptors disappeared from the screen.
"Those look different than the one that attacked Dr Grant," Harry pointed out as Mr Hammond leaned down to whisper something to Lex
"I think they're males," Muldoon said as he got up from his seat.
"I wish we could cover this damn window," Harry heard Dr Grant mutter as he and Mr Mudoon joined him and Dr Sattler.
"I can fix the window if you like but they'll probably just bust it out again," Harry offered.
"Go ahead then," Muldoon said looking interested.
"Reparo," Harry muttered as he pointed his wand at the shattered window.
Everyone watched in awe as thousands of individual shards of glass flew from the floor on either side of the window and reassembled like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle inside the circular window opening. The glass shards formed a large pane of spider-webbed glass. A second later the mass of spiderweb cracks seemed to meld together, resealing themselves to form a pristine pane of glass, making the window look good as new.
"That was very neat," Dr Sattler muttered as she pressed her palm to the window experimentally.
"Yeah, that might buy us some more time," Muldoon nodded appreciatively.
"I just wish I knew the unbreakable spell then they wouldn't be able to get through at all," Harry sighed regretfully.
"It's better than nothing, now get back there with Ms Murphy, don't want you in the line of fire if they do come through," Dr Grant instructed as he made his way over to stand with Dr Sattler and Mr Muldoon, his arm now more properly bandaged.
"Right," Harry sighed as he walked over to the computer terminal and looked over Lex's shoulder.
"You're doing great, Alex," Harry heard Mr Hammond say as he approached.
Lex was completely focused on the computer screen, a slight sheen of sweat on her forehead as she hit buttons that to Harry looked completely random.
"I almost got it I just have to type in the right line of code to disable this sub-protocol and... there subprotocol WR-317/e disabled," Lex said as she opened the Unix menu and brought up the communications file and clicked enable under a file marked telecommunications/Ingen/JurassicPark/visitorscenter/CostaRicamainline.
Barely fifteen seconds had passed before everyone in the room jumped in surprise as the phone on the terminal Lex was seated at rang loudly.
" Ring"
"Ring"
"Ring"
Slowly Mr Hammond reached over and picked up the receiver.
"Control room, Jurassic Park, John Hammond speaking" Mr Hammond answered looking surprised when a voice answered back.
"I am sorry, Mr Nedry is no longer available. I will have my associates contact you on the particulars at a later date," Mr Hammond said and hung the phone up before picking the receiver back up and frantically dialling ten numbers and waiting for the call to be answered on the other end.
"Mark, I need a chopper on the island immediately. Also, get me three containment teams we have a major incident on the island," Mr Hammond said into the phone as soon as the person on the other end pick up.
They all watched with bated breath as the man Mr Hammond was speaking to said something before Mr Hammond nodded.
"Good, let them know the raptors and the rex are on the loose," Mr Hammond said and had to hold the phone away from his ear as a male voice exclaimed.
"WHAT!?"
"I'll fill them in when they arrive but we need an evacuation immediately we have wounded and children on the island," Mr Hammond said in a grave tone.
"Thank you," Mr Hammond said as he hung up the phone.
"So the chopper is on its way?" Dr Grant asked hopefully.
"It is, we have a little over a half hour to make it to the helipad," Mr Hammond said looking wary.
"If we can get to the garage, we can take two of the gas Jeeps," Muldoon suggested.
"Why do I sense a but coming on here," Dr Grant muttered.
"But the entrance to the garage is on the first floor where the raptors are," Mr Muldoon answered.
"And half of our group is injured in some way," Harry said giving Dr Grant's bandaged shoulder a pointed look.
"Can we get to the garage from the outside?" Harry asked as he saw something through the window looking into the hallway that made his breath hitch.
"Sure, as long as we have a keycard," Mr Hammond answered.
"Good because they're here," Harry said as a pair of raptors came into view stalking down the hallway.
"Everybody downstairs," Muldoon ordered as he locked eyes with the two raptors and raised his weapon.
Harry grabbed Lex's arm, she seemed to be frozen in shock, Harry dragged her to the stairwell as fast as he could trusting two armed adults could deal with the raptors.
Harry and Lex ran down the concrete steps as he heard the sound of shattering glass from the control room above followed by frantic shouting. The heavy footfalls of the others echoed behind them as they ran into the bunker.
'Boom'
'Boom'
'Boom'
'Boom'
'Boom'
'Booom'
'Booom'
Harry heard the deafening sound of gunfire followed by a blood-curdling inhuman scream. Harry could tell at least a few of the shots had hit their mark, the gunfire echoed into the stairwell as Dr Sattler and Mr Muldoon took up the rear shooting up the stairwell at the attacking velociraptors.
'Booom'
After the final shot Harry heard s piteous reptilian shriek from the stairs leading up to the control room before Dr Sattler and Mr Muldoon entered the room and sealed the door shut, the bolt sliding into place a second before seconds before something slammed into the door with considerable force.
"We got two of them but three more came after us," Muldoon said as he loaded his shotgun with the shells from his pocket.
"I think this thing broke my shoulder," Dr Sattler groaned as she set the shotgun on the table.
"These SPAS twelves shoot like a dream but the semi-auto function gets hung up unless you use magnum loads," Muldoon said as he went and pulled a black rifle out of the cabinet.
"We were able to call for a helicopter but we are going to have to make a move for the garage," Mr Hammond told the room at large as Muldoon loaded a military-looking rifle with a long curved magazine.
"We have to get to the helipad," Dr Grant elaborated trying to sound calm.
"That's insane," Mr Arnold said his face showing how worried he was.
"We don't have a choice John," Mr Hammond sighed looking just as unnerved about the prospect of going outside with raptors on the loose.
"We can do this as long as we stay together, whatever you do stay with the group," Dr Grant warned.
"Here Ellie, this should be more comfortable for you," Muldoon said as he handed Dr Sattler an M-16 rifle.
"Okay," Dr Sattler said as she accepted the intimidating-looking rifle, looking at it with apprehension.
"Don't worry it doesn't kick at all, just don't shoot it inside or it will ricochet off of the concrete and keep it on semi-automatic or you'll dump the mag in about two seconds," Muldoon warned.
"Okay," Ellie nodded still looking shaken from her confrontation with the raptors.
"So we're going home?" Timmy asked hopefully.
"If we can get to the helipad," Lex said her hand still clutching Harry's left hand from where he had dragged her down the stairs.
"Well done Ms Murphy, you may have saved all of our lives," Mr Muldoon said giving the girl a respectful nod.
"T-thank you," Lex said quietly seeming to be only half listening as she trembled in terror.
"It'll be okay, Lex," Harry whispered giving her hand a comforting squeeze.
"I hope your right," Lex mumbled softly.
"So how are we doing this?" Harry asked looking over at Mr Muldoon.
"Grant and Sattler will walk in front, I will take up the rear. The garage is about two hundred yards northeast of the visitor's centre entrance. We are going to skirt the side of the compound as long as we can so we have one less side to defend. Once we get to the visitor centre entrance, just follow the electric track on the roadway, it'll lead us straight to the garage," Muldoon explained.
"Sounds simple enough," Dr Malcolm said as he was helped to his feet and balanced on the crutches.
"The stretch from the visitors centre to the garage will be the most dangerous part," That area has seen a lot of traffic in the last twenty-four hours," Muldoon continued.
"Harry, I want you to stay with the group in the middle. If anything gets past us, you're their last line of defence," Dr Grant said as he loaded more shells into the shotgun Dr Sattler had just set down.
"Alright," Harry said feeling his stomach twist with nerves at what they were about to do.
"Let's go, if we're lucky, they're still in the control room," Muldoon said as he helped Mr Arnold to his feet.
"Let's make sure there is nothing on the other side of the door, shall we?" Mr Muldoon said as he raised his weapon aiming at the steel door leading to the outside.
Harry had a deja vu moment as Dr Grant hastily unbolted the door before throwing it open and moving back. Thankfully, just like last time, all that was revealed was an empty staircase.
Though as Harry looked out the door he did notice blood on the steps from where he had thrown the raptor out of the bunker earlier.
"Grant and I will go up first, you lot follow behind," Muldoon instructed before he and Dr Grant walked up the stairs. After Muldoon gave the word the group slowly began making their way through the door, Harry taking up the rear.
It was on the third step that he noticed a white curved item in the pool of blood and he stooped down and scooped it up. Holding it between his fingers, he noticed it was a sharp curved tooth about two and a half inches long, the inside curve of the tooth was serrated and insanely sharp as was the pointed tip. He must have knocked the tooth out with the knockback jinx earlier. Pocketing the tooth he hurried to catch up with the group which was almost to the top of the staircase by now.
Harry was the last member of the group to step onto the lawn, two of the members looked winded from climbing the stairs but the rest just looked anxious or in Lex's case terrified.
The sun was just starting to get bright and the tropical air seemed to stick to their skin as they began making the trip across the lawn, walking as close to the side of the building as they could. The sounds of birds filled the air and making it more difficult to hear any other sounds coming from the jungle.
They were moving much slower than Harry would have liked but with Dr Malcolm's injury, it couldn't be helped. Harry had to force himself to walk slowly so as not to run into the man as he scanned the area to his right, his wand held in a tight grip as sweat began to bead on his forehead.
Harry was walking behind Dr Malcom towards the back of the group, in front of Dr Malcolm were Mr Hammond, Lex and Tim. Mr Arnold was walking Behind Dr Grant and Dr Sattler who were walking side by side leading the group. Mr Muldoon was walking behind Harry taking up the rear and was in the most dangerous position of all, in Harry's opinion.
Harry kept looking towards the jungle that was about fifty yards away to his right. He was trying to spot any movement that could hint at an imminent attack from one of the many meat-eating dinosaurs that were loose on the island.
Harry knew in his gut they wouldn't make it to their destination without encountering something. Though he had never hoped more in his life that his gut was wrong.
"We're almost to the visitor's centre," Muldoon whispered from behind him.
The group was getting close to the corner of the building and Harry could make out the dark water of the large pond he remembered seeing from the car yesterday. The dirt road was just starting to come into view and he could see a shed through the jungle on the other side of the road.
They had to veer away from the building as the decorative plants from the visitor's entrance grew close to the building. It was just as they could see the stairs that led up to the visitor's centre entrance that they heard it.
'Coooo-ooooh
'Coooooo-oooh'
The group froze as they looked up at the source of the sound, three raptors were perched on the lower thatched bungalow-style roof about fifteen feet above them.
"How the hell did they get up there?" Malcolm asked as another call came from the jungle to their right.
'Coooo-oooh'
"Oh shit," Muldoon muttered as two more raptors came out of the dense jungle about fifty feet away.
Harry tried to think of something to get them out of this, the three on the roof were within striking distance and just eying them, their bodies crouched low. The growls they made as they exposed their curved teeth sent a trickle of fear in his stomach and he knew if he didn't do something they were all going to die.
Harry stared up at the creatures his wand already aimed at them but not sure which spell to use. He couldn't cast a spell at one or the other two would go straight for him. Making a split-second decision, Harry saw a way to buy them a few seconds.
'"When I cast the spell, start shooting," Harry whispered to Muldoon as he aimed at the thatched roof underneath the raptor's feet and cast, "Incendio!'
The gout of flame was much larger than in the infirmary last night and engulfed the palm fronds under the raptor's feet in flames four feet high, making the raptors shriek in surprise as the fire engulfed their lower halves.
'Boom'
'Boom'
'Boom'
'Boom'
Muldoon didn't waste time and fired four shots in rapid succession, striking one of them in the chest and another in the head. The third one leapt from the roof onto the lawn his lower half smoking and covered in angry pink burns. The raptor took three steps toward the jungle before double ought buckshot struck it in the back, dropping it onto the lawn.
Harry heard more gunfire from the front of the group as the fire on the roof began to spread.
"Sorry about the roof, it was the only thing I could think of to get all three of them," Harry said apologetically.
"Don't sweat it, the thatching is only decorative," Muldoon waved him off.
"Won't the whole building catch fire?" Harry asked worriedly as another raptor fell courtesy of Dr Sattler and Dr Grant.
"Slate roof underneath, plus the thatching is wet. The fire will die out before it can do any real damage and if the fire does get inside, the building has a state-of-the-art sprinkler system," Muldoon shrugged as the last raptor darted back into the jungle.
"Come on," Dr Grant said as he continued moving forward, the group quickly following him.
"That was close," Timmy exclaimed as the group started moving again.
"It's not over yet," Harry muttered as they stepped onto the road in front of the visitor's centre.
"He's right, we're not even halfway there," Muldoon agreed as they passed the stairs leading inside.
Harry was just looking ahead when he saw a blur in his peripheral vision, it was moving towards their group and he screamed out a warning.
" Lookout!" Harry yelled as a large brown raptor ran from the gaping hole where the visitor's entrance door used to be.
Harry fired a knockback jinx but the animal avoided the spell and leapt through the air, landing on Mr Arnold.
Muldoon pushed Harry aside and fired a shot into the raptor's flank dropping it to the ground.
Harry ran forward and Helped pull the dead raptor off of Mr Arnold but it was obvious the man was dead, a large chunk of his throat was missing and his brown eyes were staring lifelessly up at them.
"Don't look kids," Mr Hammond said pulling them away from the downed man and looking very shaken at the sight before him.
"How many of the bloody raptors are there?" Harry demanded angrily as he kicked the dead raptor in frustration.
"This is one of the park's bred raptors," Muldoon said as he pointed to a small yellow tag attached to its leg with the barrel of his shotgun.
"We need to keep moving, there is at least one more out there," Dr Grant said as he nervously scanned the area.
"Two, there is still one more park raptor out there as well," Muldoon corrected as he took off his outer vest and Draped it over Mr Arnold's head.
"Then let's go," Dr Hammond said looking stricken at the death of a man he had been working with for the last four years.
The group crossed the driveway their heads looking in every direction, everyone was shaken from the attack. Harry felt his nerves ratcheting up the closer they got to the garage.
The garage came into view as they turned a bend in the road and the road went down into an underground parking garage.
"There it is," Muldoon said as he looked to the left and right and let out a sigh of relief.
"Oh no," Harry muttered as a very familiar crocodilian head came out of the tunnel as they got closer to the garage.
A low growl reverberated in its throat as it came out of the tunnel its green eyes focused on Harry's. Somehow Harry knew it remembered him if the way it stayed focused only on him was any indication.
"Damn, I should have given it another dose of carfentanil this morning," Mr Muldoon groaned beside him.
Harry didn't even register what he said, he was too busy staring at the dinosaur in front of them. The Baryonyx looked even bigger in the light of day. It stood about ten feet tall and had a slight hump on its back. Harry could see its pointed teeth as she hungrily stared back at him. Her lime green skin with black swirling pattern stripes was quite striking in the bright sunlight and would have looked almost pleasing on the eye if not for the look of hatred in her eyes as she let out a roar.
"I really hate this park," Dr Malcolm muttered as the Baryonyx stood at its full height blocking their way into the tunnel.
Before any of them could reply, the dinosaur let out an even louder roar and charged forward the ground shaking as it closed the distance to the group.
Muldoon, Grant, and Sattler fired their weapons into it though this only seem to enrage it as he dropped onto all fours and kept on coming.
"Harry took aim and channelled as much power as he could through his wand as he bellowed, " FLIPPENDO!"
Unfortunately, the spell flew high and was forced to dive out of the way as the Baryonyx lunged at him knocking Dr Malcolm through the air in the process causing him to land on his already badly broken leg ten feet away.
Harry heard Dr Malcolm scream on landing as Dr Satrler and Dr Drant stood over him, Dr Sattler firing her rifle into the dinosaur's flank until she ran out of ammunition.
Harry watched with some relief as he saw Mr Hammond dragging lex and Tim towards the garage before he was forced to roll out of the way as the Baryonyx attempted to stomp him.
Harry heard more gunfire and scrambled away using the distraction to get to his feet and put some distance between himself and the dinosaur.
" Ellie get Ian out of here," Dr Grant demanded as he stepped over Dr Malcolm's down form.
"Flippendo," Harry tried again and was rewarded when the dinosaur was knocked off of his feet and flung onto its back.
Dr Grant went to shoot the dino while it was down and got the worst sound you want to hear at a time like this.
'Click'
"Damn, I'm out!" Dr Grant exclaimed as he dropped the gun and tried to help Dr Sattler get Ian to his feet, the Baryonyx separating them from Harry and Muldoon.
Harry groaned when the Baryonyx got to her feet again and Muldoon tried to fire his shotgun only to realize he was out of ammunition as well.
Harry was getting frustrated, out of all the animals he had met this weekend, this was the most persistent.
Harry had one last idea that he had been pondering on since facing the rex last night. He knew it would work but the larger the animal the more difficult it was for the spell to hold. Figuring he had nothing to lose, Harry took aim and imagined the result he wanted in his mind.
"Reducio," Harry exclaimed, hoping desperately the spell worked.
Harry watched as the purple beam of light flew from the tip of his wand and struck the Baryonyx. The dinosaur began to rabiply shrink its earsplitting roar of surprise turning into an almost cute little squeak.
Harry was shocked when the dinosaur continued to shrink in size until it was only about the size of a chicken and froze looking at the much larger creatures, all of its aggression gone.
Harry wasn't the only one looking surprised, everyone had stopped what they were doing and was staring in amazement at the tiny Baryonyx.
"Hurry up, that spell won't hold for very long!" Harry exclaimed drawing the adults out of their shock.
"Right, let's go!" Muldoon ordered as he dropped his shotgun and took Dr Malcolm's other arm.
Together Mr Muldoon and Alan carried him into the garage, Harry and Ellie taking up the rear.
Mr Hammond, Lex and Timmy were already in one Jeep and another was idling ready to go.
"Harry get in with them," Dr Grant ordered as they got Dr Malcolm in the front seat of the other Jeep.
It didn't take long before everyone was loaded up and the two Jeeps pulled out of the garage and onto the access road.
Harry grinned when they passed the still shrunken Baryonyx who darted into the jungle when the jeep approached.
"Was that the Baryonyx?" Timmy asked incredulously as he caught a glimpse of the tint dinosaur.
"Yeah, turns out a shrinking charm works on dinosaurs," Harry chuckled.
"Wish you had thought of that last night," Rex muttered as they left the complex in their rearview.
They rode for a few minutes having to stop to open a set of electrified gates as they made their way south to the helipad.
"We're almost there, kids," Mr Hammond said as they came up the rise of a small hill.
"Thank god, I am getting tired of things trying to eat me, this place is worse than Hogwarts," Harry chuckled as the crested the hill only to pale when he saw what was blocking the road ahead of them.
"Oh no," Lex muttered as the tyrannosaurus rex looked up as she heard them approach.
"You have got to be kidding me!" Harry exclaimed as they could see the helipad about five hundred yards away.
Mr Hammond veered off of the road through the thick jungle vegetation, the Jeep behind them following their lead.
Harry was surprised when the rex didn't give chase as the cars went around her tearing their way through the jungle, she seemed content to feed on the dead duckbilled-looking dinosaur that was sprawled on the ground in front of her.
"She killed one of the Parasaurolophus," Timmy exclaimed as they passed seeming thrilled at the idea
"I'm glad, if it means she isn't interested in us," Mr Hammond said as he shifted gears pushing the jeep as fast as it could go down the final stretch of road.
As they made a turn they saw the helicopter descending from high over the mountain, the familiar waterfall Harry remembered from yesterday as a backdrop.
Mr Hammond skidded the jeep to a stop as the chopper touched down. Harry shakily got out of the back of the jeep as he followed Timmy and Lex onto the chopper.
He had barely taken a seat before Dr Malcolm was assisted into the Helicopter and the others piled in soon after.
As the helicopter lifted off and he saw the island below him getting smaller and smaller, Harry couldn't help but sigh.
Between being lost at sea and almost being eaten by dinosaurs for the past two days he had never been so relieved to leave somewhere in his life. Harry closed his eyes and leaned his head against the window, idly noticing Lex resting her head on his shoulder.
'This has been one of the strangest weeks of my life,' Harry thought as the chopper flew further out over the open sea.
AN: This is the final chapter of the story though there will be an epilogue to follow.
