Bete Loga was of Loga clan in the northern plains. He was the son of the chieftain. As such, it was obvious that his father was the strongest in the tribe. He had always told Bete that the strong ate the weak. Being six years old, Bete took it to heart.
There was one problem, though.
For some reason, after falling down from a tree, Bete Loga remembered a life that was not his own. A life from way back in ancient times. A life of someone named Yuri Loga.
And from that life, Bete understood one thing.
What his father said was wrong. The strong did not eat the weak; they protected the weak until they became strong. After all, that was what he did as Yuri three thousand years ago.
Conflicted, he sat down, contemplating the revelation that he was a reincarnation of someone from the past.
With all this knowledge, what would he do? Bete stood up and went for a stance he remembered as Yuri. There were no missing memories. He remembered Yuri's most favored stance.
A few slash here and there, and he confirmed it. He still remembered all his techniques. Although there was no power as his body was still of a child.
Looking at his fist, Bete's mind went towards his family and friends.
In the past, he had lost a little sister. This time, he was also blessed with a little sister of his own. Bete gritted his teeth.
This time, for sure, he would protect his sister with all his might.
Four years have passed and Bete became stronger. During that time, he had never forgotten about his promise to protect his sister. Although he hated to admit it, he became slightly (read: very) overbearing towards his sister, Luna.
It wasn't like she wasn't a ferocious little wolf either. She could kick the ass of boys making fun of her handily, courtesy of him and his father training her. But of course, Bete was still worried about her. That was what big brother did, and he was no exception.
The other constant in his new life was Reene.
Now, unlike his little sister, Reene was very weak. However, where others saw weakness, Bete saw gentleness. Reene herself was very shy and had low self-esteem. Bete always encouraged her to be stronger, but to never lose that gentleness. Whenever he did that, Reene always pouted, as if he was teasing her.
Bete was no child, he saw an endearment in her expression every time they talked. No doubt, Reene fancied him. They were childhood friends of the same age, and then there was the fact that Bete never singled her out for being weak whereas others always teased her for her weakness.
The problem was Bete wasn't a child inside. He could never ever reciprocate Reene's feelings with the same intensity she had towards him. It wouldn't be wrong to say that Bete saw Reene and Luna both as his little sister he had to protect.
He doubted, however, that Reene would feel alright if she heard him saying that, so he kept that inside his heart. Maybe in the future, somebody would claw a place in her heart.
In the meantime, Bete would keep his claw sharp. For the safety of his little sisters.
It happened when he was twelve.
Horde upon horde of monsters came down from the Dragon Valley, decimating the people of the tribe.
It was happening all over again, Bete's mind remembered.
With all his might, Bete clawed his way towards his little sister, standing in front of her in a protective stance against all the monsters.
"Stay down, Luna. If you can, play dead."
"Father is...!"
Even his father, the strongest of the clan, fell by the onslaught.
"I know. But he's dead already. You are alive. You take priority," Bete explained. "Don't cry now. It's not over."
Shamefully, Bete knew his limits. Instead of going to the thick of things, he used the debris left by the monster's attack to cover Luna's body.
"Brother-"
"I'll make rooms. But be careful."
After that, he howled, getting the attention of the monsters.
Using a stick, Bete carved a circle around him and Luna.
"None of you are going to pass this circle! I promise!"
And then Bete lost himself in the Beastification.
The onslaught was over.
There were no other survivors. He and his sister were the only surviving members of Loga clan.
You forgot Reene.
A small part of his heart reminded him. Indeed, when the monsters were attacking, his mind weighed his options and decided that blood was thicker. He abandoned Reene to the ferocity of the monsters.
"Brother..."
Luna spoke in the silent night, eyes full of tears.
The fact that everyone was dead was left unspoken.
"I hate myself!" Luna screamed. "I hate how weak I am! If only I was stronger..."
The sound of sobbing was the only thing that could be heard in the remains of their home.
"Don't get angry at yourself. You're only going to hurt yourself."
"Then what!? Angry at the world?! At life?!" was her reply.
"You should hate me."
The sobbing stopped. Bete looked down to see his sister looking confused.
"I choose to save you and nobody else. I even abandoned Reene. You're justified to hate me."
"...How can I hate you? Stupid Brother! You are stupid! Stupid!" She kept punching his chest lightly, tears falling down her eyes.
That's fine. Work off your frustration. The most important thing is to not hate yourself.
Bete and Luna decided to left the plains. In their aimless journey, Bete heard about Orario. He and Luna set their sight on the center of the world.
"Brother. I'm going to become strong. Strong enough to kill that monster."
"You should set your sight higher. Become strong enough that no other monster can stand in your way," Bete replied. "That's my goal, by the way."
Only one of them, to be precise. The other included protecting Luna and rebuilding his clan. Oh, and finding a strong enough werewolf for Luna, he guessed. He specifically said 'enough' because he was sure nobody would be a stronger werewolf than him.
That was his vow.
