How has it already been half a year since I last updated this story...then again, Chipped Surface hasn't seen an update for more than a year now...god I need to stop making new stories. Also, I wonder if anyone reading this knows where I've used the Nightgate Inn before?

Also, kinda forgot that Alcyra already levelled Enchanting up to 100 and didn't change the stats screens for chapters 10 and 11, so whoops. I'd assume nobody noticed, or if they did they didn't tell me which is a shame because I'd have fixed it immediately, but hey, it's fixed now ^.^

Chapter 12

After paying a visit to the College and picking up a whole bunch of Apocalypse spellbooks with the septims she had earned running her shop, she headed to the meetup point.

Looking over the two carriages closely, Alcyra tried to figure out what was so important to warrant over two-dozen people guarding it. The fact that their employer was willing to give up a long-lost book to her simply for her assistance guarding it proved that it was immensely valuable to them, and that they genuinely expected to need a lot of protection to get it safely to Whiterun. From the fact it was being transported out of Winterhold, Alcyra assumed it was something magical, maybe a powerful artefact that other people got wind of and wanted to take for their own.

Whatever the case was, Alcyra didn't really care. What she did care about was the amusement she felt at the incredulous looks she received from the guards around the wagons. She wasn't wearing armour or even mage robes, and instead she'd finally gotten a chance to wear her own original travelling outfit, which was mainly leather and fur, built for comfort instead of protection. "This ain' a roadtrip girlie."

Alcyra rolled her eyes at the one who spoke, waving a hand then opening her inventory and switching to her heavily-enchanted Glass Armour, surprising everyone there. "If you knew who I was you'd know I'm exceptionally good at Alteration and Conjuration, so storing and swapping through armour sets isn't hard." With that, she flicked her hair, swapped her clothing back, then moved towards their employer. "Where do you want me?"

The woman waved at the wagon in response. "You're a magic-caster, not a frontline combatant, so probably best for you up on the wagon, that way you can see over everyone and cast spells from up high. Some of the others might grumble, but they'll stay in line. Nobody wants to travel without a magic caster available after all." Nodding, Alcyra climbed up onto the wagon that she was waved towards, taking out a notepad to write and draw upon whilst they waited for the last few straggler guards who hadn't yet arrived.

Once they had arrived and a headcount had been done, the group set off away from Winterhold and out into the wilds of Skyrim. Some of the others who were in the wagon tried to strike up a conversation with her, but aside from a few friendly words, she didn't really give them any openings to start an actual conversation, because she honestly wasn't interested in any of them.

She was only there because of the deal Akatosh had made with her, and while it'd be in poor taste, even if the entire caravan was wiped out, she could just travel away and keep the book. Nowhere in the deal did Akatosh mention the woman herself or the task that she had to do in return for the book. But if word got around that she abandoned a job and shamelessly took her payment with her, it'd probably cause a lot of headaches and annoyances, so it'd be better to not do that.

...Probably.

As the convoy exited the Nightgate Inn to begin the second leg of their journey, Alcyra frowned.

She could feel...danger. Exactly how she was in danger she wasn't sure, it was just a general 'something is about to happen' sense, which probably meant she wasn't going to get hit specifically. But, that meant the most likely source of attack would be an area-of-effect, or maybe a raid was about to begin and she herself, thanks to her abilities, wasn't actually in danger?

Cursing at how unreliable Akatosh's 'bequeathment' was in practice, Alcyra upped her level of alertness and stood up in the wagon, grabbing the edge of the canvas cover to peer out around them. "What's up?" One of the others asked with an upwards inflection, prompting her to glance back for a moment before shrugging. "Ahh, maybe you're feeling homesick. I remember the first time I left my hometown, jittery as a-"

Alcyra stopped his reminiscing with a short sentence. "Bandit attack coming from the north and south, it's an ambush!" She yelled out without hesitation, gripping the top of the canvas and using her upper body strength to pull herself out, up and then onto the roof of the wagon in a smooth motion, immediately opening her favourites menu to pause time and assess the situation more clearly.

She was facing the south, and she could see that a group of well-armed men and women were currently charging out from behind rocks, bushes and trees towards the convoy. Closing her menu, she swivelled her head abruptly and opened the menu once again. From the north, there were less enemies. However, what mattered more was that on top of a rocky outcropping was a group of around a dozen robed figures, all of whom were forming flaming balls on their palms, preparing to fire a volley at the convoy.

If her entire body wasn't frozen, Alcyra would have frowned then as she tried to decide on what to do. Upon deciding, Alcyra decisively equipped Seldstone in her left hand and Evil Twin in her right hand, as well as equipping her Resist Magic set of Elven Armour, having prepared both Fortify Light Armour and Resist Magic versions. She fired out Seldstone the instant she closed the menu, watching the magical rock appear as the convoy drew their blades and bows ready for combat. Next, she cast Evil Twin repeatedly, manifesting illusionary enemies that were indistinguishable from real enemies, drinking a Magicka Potion as she did so from how draining repeatedly casting the spell was, then sent those illusions charging at the enemies with reckless abandon.

With that done, she opened her favourites and equipped Bombardment in both her hands, closed the menu again, then closed her eyes and exhaled for just a moment. Placing her hands together, she opened her eyes and locked onto the largest cluster of enemy forces before casting the spells at the same time and merging them together into a single cast. After a second, fireballs began to spit out of her hands at a varying rate of between two and three per second, smashing into the ground and into the enemy forces violently. These weren't just fireballs though, they exploded with a vicious concussive force.

Where the balls detonated eyeballs burst, swords were flung and cleaved limbs from allies, all the while Alcyra kept up the bombardment, levelling the area with explosive magic at will. Thanks to the Evil Twin illusions, there were no friendlies in the area, so she was free to fire at will, killing at least a dozen enemies in just as many seconds. When she was about to run out of Magicka, she simply opened her favourites menu and drank a single super-powered Potion of Regenerate Magicka, instantly replenishing her magic to full and keeping it fully topped-off as she continued to bombard the enemy until they all lay bleeding, burned and very, very broken.

Smirking, Alcyra opened the menu once again and equipped Bolide in her right hand and a Resist Magic shield in her left, turning and blocking in time to take a dozen fireballs in quick succession, dropping her health just a little thanks to her resistances and the shield itself. Smiling behind her shield, she charged up Bolide and launched the projectile, watching as it heated up and grew in size, travelling across the gap between her and the 'artillery mages' as fast as an arrow before smashing into one. When it impacted, the projectile was at least as large as she was, and when it exploded...it was honestly like...like a mortar shell landing.

Even as far away as she was from them, she felt the wave of heat flash past her, as well as the shockwave from the explosion shaking the wagon itself, unsteadying the footing of those around it. There was a layer of steam from where the balls had superheated the thick layer of snow, and as it dissipated, the only thing left of that group of mages was a pile of skeletons and a deep, scorched and water-filled crater, still steaming. All in all, about thirty seconds had passed from her first yell until that moment, and the attacks from both sides had been effectively neutered.

Dismissing the spells in her hands, Alcyra glanced in the direction of the remaining bandits, the ones from the north who were supposed to have overhead support from a group of mages. All of them had quite understandably frozen and looked in the direction of the giant explosion to see the aftermath, which meant they got to see what happened next. The first spell she had cast was Seldstone, which meant that when someone was killed near the stone, a spectre appeared which looked very much like them and was allied to the caster.

The first group of bandits she killed hadn't had any ghosts appear simply because the instant they started to appear another fireball explosion would occur and dissipate them. However, the mages only got hit by a single attack, and so over a few seconds, twelve spectral forms developed and rose up from the skeletal corpses of the mages. In sync, the twelve prepared spells of various kinds, having lost the group coordination they had in life to all launch the same kind of spell, and launched a plethora of magic towards the nearest enemies.

Sitting down, Alcyra did nothing but watch as the spectral mages massacred the remaining bandits, each one then rising again as a spectre. She took out a waterskin of juice and took a sip as the mages finished their duty, then with a mental twist, she dismissed the Seldstone, causing all twelve mages alongside the bandit spectres to drop into piles of ash that quickly blew away on the wind into nothingness. The guards of the caravan barely had enough time to even properly assess what was going on and set up a defence before Alcyra had already handled the entire attack, leaving no survivors or even any corpses, just ash on the wind.

Alcyra nodded to herself silently, the spells she had bought were most definitely worth the hefty price tags.

After that little interlude, the convoy moved onwards towards Whiterun at an ever-so-slightly faster pace than before, and no other attacks came.

On top of that, nobody seemed willing to even try to strike up a conversation with Alcyra anymore, and so she took to sitting on top of the roof of the wagon instead, preferring the open air and the sights she could see to the silent company down below. The magic she had demonstrated was rare in the first place, but she hadn't just cast one or two spells then took a break, she had consecutively cast powerful magic, one spell after another, that completely dominated the battlefield, leaving no room for anybody but herself to battle. In their eyes, she was probably seemingly on a level approaching those legendary figures only found in myths and legends, casting supremely-powerful magic without pause, completely dominating whatever battle she found herself in.

It honestly amused her a lot to think about that fact. She was a one-woman powerhouse now, able to fight even large groups of enemies without pausing. She could batter groups from afar with magic, then seamlessly switch to melee combat and cut the survivors down at close range. It would use up potions like crazy to fight like that, but she had her store to fund her fighting style, as well as the fact she could make ludicrously powerful potions from cheap ingredients.

The potion she had drunk was one she made when she had utterly broken her Fortify Alchemy enchantment and applied it to a set of gear meant only for alchemy, which meant that when she wore it and made a Potion of Regenerate Magicka, it had boosted the potion to such a ludicrous degree of Magicka Regeneration that no matter what spell she casted, she would instantly have a full magicka bar again. It was one of the tier of potions that she wouldn't consider selling, because it was simply far too powerful to release into the world. With it, even the most mediocre magic caster, provided they had the capacity for the spell itself, could spam absolutely any spell in existence.

That was also why the enchanted and enhanced gear she sold was not amped up to a ludicrous degree, she wasn't interested in making equipment that could allow others to challenge her. If she made a super-dagger, one that had an enchantment which dealt an absolutely obscene amount of damage, even she wouldn't survive being struck by it. So no, aside from for her own personal use, super-powerful equipment was never going to be made. Things that wouldn't affect her she would make powerful, but stuff like weaponry was out of the question.

Her thoughts disappeared when Whiterun came into view as they passed Whitewatch Tower. Even though she'd been there before, the discrepancy between her memories of the game version of the hold and the fact that it was literally a colossal town and the breadbasket of all Skyrim still distracted her. Dragonsreach was so incredibly high up that, from the top, no invading army could ever sneak up on Whiterun, not with lookouts that could see the entirety of the plains below.

The fields around them, barren and craggy in the game, had been replaced with fields upon fields of crops being farmed in the only place in Skyrim that supported widespread farming. Whiterun was pretty much the lynchpin for the entire province, because whilst the other holds could maybe subsist on their ability to grow crops, only Whiterun grew more than enough to trade with the other eight holds, supporting the populace of Skyrim and basically cementing its place as undeniably the most important hold, bar absolutely none.

Oh, sure, each hold had value, that couldn't be denied. Solitude was the capital and had the Blue Palace, whilst Windhelm had the Palace of the Kings. Dawnstar was an incredible source of rare minerals, Falkreath had incredibly high cultural significance to the Nords, Markarth exported extremely high quantities of silver whilst Morthal primarily supplied alchemical reagents to the other holds thanks to the dense swamps surrounding it. Riften, meanwhile, was home to the Black-Briar Meadery, who exported meads and fine alcohols not only to other holds but also to other provinces.

But none of the other 8 holds would have grown to the size they were at, nor could they sustain it, without Whiterun supplying food to the other eight holds in great quantities. If she wasn't so focused on magic, she would honestly have preferred to buy a shop in Whiterun, and was still tempted to do so. Doing so, especially in a shop near the gate, would mean she could keep an eye out for the Dragonborn, and could intercept them when they emerged. She would also be able to dissuade them from doing something pants-on-head stupid like supporting the Stormcloaks.

Sure, tearing up the White-Gold Concordat and 'freeing' Skyrim sounded all well and good, but Ulfric and every single Stormcloak seemed to be in denial of a massive fact...the Empire lost that war. Sure, it was a military stalemate, but the Third Aldmeri Dominion was still able to wage war against Hammerfell. If Skyrim seceded from the Empire and became free, there would be nothing stopping the Aldmeri Dominion from invading and annexing a heavily-weakened Skyrim recovering from a bloody, city-by-city civil war. Ulfric's ambitions of a free Skyrim, free from the Empire, would simply be handing over Skyrim on a silver platter to the only thing worse than the Empire in his eyes.

And yet, it was never addressed, probably because the games never went into what happened afterwards. The only thing protecting them would be that the Aldmeri Dominion wouldn't have a land border with Skyrim, but they could still sail from the Summerset Isles north past Hammerfell and High Rock, invading Solitude and taking the capital as the starting shot of the war.

Even against the 'weakened' Aldmeri Dominion, still recovering from their war in Hammerfell, Skyrim wouldn't stand a chance, not as one weakened and war-torn province against three, the might of Valenwood, Elsweyr and the Summerset Isles arrayed against them. The Empire might help, but that would mean igniting the Second Great War before they are ready for it, which could cost the Empire greatly. Hammerfell would also possibly get involved both provinces believed that if they had continued to fight they could have taken from the Aldmeri instead of ceding things to them, but politics and military readiness were a major part of why she doubted Skyrim would see any help given to them. No, Skyrim would fall, and it would all be because Ulfric bloody Stormcloak was too short-sighted to see what was going to come if Skyrim seceded from the Empire.

Sighing, Alcyra shook away her negative thoughts. If the Dragonborn believed that the Stormcloaks were the future of Skyrim, that was fine, she was just going to hang out in Winterhold and not get involved. Establishing a fast-travel point down in Cyrodiil would be good to continue trading weapons to the military if and when she set that up, and if she played her cards right she would be able to hopefully avoid any trouble that would come from the inevitable Aldmeri invasion of Skyrim. Maybe if she killed Jarl Korir when the invasion happened she would be able to present his head and not get her own cut off for being a 'hybrid'...nah, she liked him, he was a good Jarl and killing him wasn't something she would be able to be happy about in any regard. Just keeping her head down and making sure she wasn't connected to the Empire in any traceable way was the best route to victory.

Of course, if the Dragonborn leaned towards the Empire then she would be 110% up for helping she or he out questing across Skyrim and fucking shit up. Maybe even tagging along if she felt like it, her connections would probably help out in some capacity and the fact that she, at least personally, felt that she was going to be basically the strongest magic caster in Tamriel, would definitely help when things inevitably ended in conflict. She still wasn't at a level where she could cast all spells, she didn't have the magicka capacity for that, and hadn't yet gotten around to making any jewellery with Fortify Magicka on it. Honestly, she only needed a single item, maybe a nice necklace or something, with an obscenely buffed Fortify Magicka Enchantment, and she would instantly solve her problem, she...well, to put it simply, had forgotten to do it.

Putting that at the top of her to-do list, Alcyra watched as the convoy came to a halt outside the gates of Whiterun, the woman who hired her talking with the guards and getting their convoy admittance to the city. Quickly opening Deep Storage, Alcyra pulled out a potion of Fortify Enchanting which had a percentage increase of, rounded, 3,500,000%, and a nice plain silver necklace she liked the look of. Doing some mental maths, Alcyra nodded at the result, then took out two rings as well, amending her to-do list to also create Fortify Health and Stamina gear. She didn't actually have the Fortify Health enchant unlocked yet, but she was sure that if she had a look around she'd find at least something she could disenchant in Whiterun.

If push came to shove she would go to Dragonsreach in order to talk to Farengar and ask if he knew it and if he did, whether he could enchant something with it so she could disenchant it and learn it, for a fee obviously. The convoy came to a halt again, and everyone began dismounting and queueing up to get paid for their time. She already had the book that was to be her payment, so she simply caught the eye of the woman who hired her, whose name she never actually learned, nodded at her, then hopped off the wagon and disappeared into the city.

She didn't really have a direction in mind aside from simply heading vaguely towards Dragonsreach, but she kept an eye out for shops. Most of the signs she did see were for taverns, food and artisan goods, the sort of stuff that only Whiterun could really get away with creating. After maybe ten minutes of wandering, she saw the sign she was looking for, indicating an enchanted goods shop. She had the same sign hanging outside of her own shop along with an alchemist sign, it was a universal thing all across Tamriel that shops would use the same signage to indicate what kind of shop they were, it helped foreigners or even people just travelling their own province to find what they wanted.

Stepping up to the door and peering at the opening times, she nodded and pushed the door open, peeking around as she entered and spying nothing that immediately leapt out at her as amazing. The shelves had swords and gear lined up neatly, nothing egregious or too out-there like daedric gear, just plain steel and other materials, a few bits of glass armour on a mannequin in the corner in the best place to catch the light and look dazzling, evidently gear that was more valuable and earned a special place.

Behind the counter, face-down in a book and completely oblivious with their face concealed by short and deeply-crimson locks of hair with almost-black roots, was whoever was running the store at the time. She knew it was because her sneak skill and perks were immensely high, but it was still funny that her entrance was completely unnoticed. Rather than do anything mean to someone obviously distracted thoroughly by their book, she merely cleared her throat. That, of course, immediately had the opposite effect than she intended as they instantly jumped like a startled cat, slamming the book shut by accident and staring at her.

Controlling herself, Alcyra barely managed to not laugh as the person, revealed to be a fairly young guy whose face looked like he had a bit of Redguard blood in his lineage, had their face started to turn the same shade of red as their hair. "Sorry! Can I help you?" He asked quickly, glancing at his book before totally discreetly sliding it off the counter and putting it somewhere below.

"I need something disenchantable with the Fortify Health enchantment for a personal project. If you have one, I'd also like to rent the use of an Arcane Enchanter, please." She said with a beatific smile, shamelessly making his face redden further as she leaned on the counter and his eyes naturally found their way below her face. Sure, it might have been a bit mean, but he was cute and had awesome-looking hair, so teasing him a bit was surely not a big deal.

"U-uhm, let me check!" He said quickly, ducking down and grabbing a different book from below, opening it whilst not letting her see the contents. He skimmed it quickly, flipping through a few pages. "Aha!" He proclaimed loudly, pointing his finger at a spot in particular and tipping the book. "We have a silver garnet ring with a moderate-strength Health Enchantment on it. That'll be, umm, twelve septims and thirty-five silvers please."

Taking the required amount of money out and handing it him, Alcyra began watching him completely unabashedly as he turned and walked into the back room, coming back and giving her the ring she had purchased. Alcyra then raised an eyebrow, keeping her smile on her face as she watched the guy try and fail to meet her eyes repeatedly. "And is there an Arcane Enchanter here I can rent the use of? If not that's perfectly understandable, it'd just be more convenient for me." She gave her head a little tilt at the end, endlessly amused by his reactions as he somehow reddened further and looked away, then back, then away again pretty much in a loop as he spoke.

"W-we do, but my mother doesn't like other people using it." Humming, Alcyra eyed him for a moment before nodding, her smile still wide across her face as she turned and began to leave, swaying lightly from side to side as she walked. Interestingly enough, while she could pretty much feel his eyes on her, he didn't actually say anything as she left, turning back at the door to smile and wave at his rather dazed face before closing it behind her. She made it maybe twenty steps down the street before she let a little bit of laughter out. She wasn't trying to be mean to him nor was she looking for a discount or anything, he just had a face that appealed to her and hair that was honestly gorgeous, so a little teasing felt alright to her.

She made a mental note to come back at some point if she needed something enchanted, turned and walked an alleyway then fast-travelled out of Whiterun and back to her home in Winterhold, stretching her arms out above her head. Sure, she hadn't been gone long, but it was still medieval travel, and it wasn't exactly the most comfortable method of transportation. Heading down into her basement, Alcyra quickly disenchanted the ring, then took three filled Grand Soul Gems out of storage, each of which cost her a very pretty penny. With a quick click of her menu, she drank her Fortify Enchanting potion, then accessed her Arcane Enchanter, selecting her necklace, the Fortify Magicka Enchantment, and her first Grand Soul Gem.

With a final check, she applied the enchantment, then repeated the process with the two rings, one for Health and one for Stamina. With a buff of 3.5 million percent, on top of her 60% flat buff from her three levels of Enchanter, which synergized to effectively turn that 3.5 million into a 5,600,000% increase instead, that meant that with a base strength of 20 more Magicka/Health/Stamina from the Enchantment, in actuality, each piece of jewellery now gave her 1,120,000 points to whatever attribute they were supposed to increase.

However, as she was about to put them on, she hesitated. In Skyrim, if a super-high-level Enchantment for Health was equipped, the game would give the player a hard-cap for health. When the enchanted item was removed, it would remove that amount, but because the health was capped, the player would lose more health than they had, and it would instakill them. In theory, it shouldn't kill her to remove it, but there was still a significant chance that if she put that ring on, she wouldn't ever be able to take it off again without dying.

Gnawing at her lip, she tried to decide whether the risk was worth it. Gaining over a million health points would make her effectively immortal. But if the ring was removed somehow, there was a chance that she would instantaneously die. A low chance, but it was still there. The Magicka and Stamina items were fine, they wouldn't kill her if they were removed, but the Health ring was...really concerning. Eventually, she decided the risk was worth it, and after rolling the ring over in her fingers at least a dozen times, she took a deep breath and slipped the ring onto her finger.

And she felt...no different. She expected to feel something, an inner warmth at the very least, but...nothing. Shrugging to herself, she slipped on her Stamina ring, and again, felt no different. Then Magicka, and, for the third and final time, she felt no change overcome her. Slightly underwhelmed, Alcyra opened her interface to see if they had even had any effect at all, and once she did, she smiled as she immediately realised what had happened to make sure she didn't explode.

All three bars, Health, Stamina and Magicka, were all practically empty aside from the tiniest sliver on their left sides, a fraction of a fraction of the total capacity as indicated by the numbers beneath them, which were quite notably not increasing as fast as they should have been. The Enchantments, rather than instantly filling her up on all three of her stats, had simply opened up her capacity. A change that differed from the game, but one she appreciated, because it meant she could remove the jewellery and not explode instantly...hopefully.

Taking three potions out of deep storage, ones that weren't super-powered to the point she would explode, Alcyra sighed. As she drank the one for Health she felt almost as though something was...warm inside of her. Drinking the Magicka potion made her head feel a little bit fuzzy, not enough to concern her, she could still see and act and think, but just sort of a low-level buzz. Finally, her Stamina potion made her feel a bit more awake and alert, not a lot, but enough that she felt perked up. It was just a shame that Fortify Stamina didn't buff Carry Weight, or else she could have just done away with Deep Storage entirely.

Smiling as she opened her menu and saw that her three stats were now increasing at a faster rate, still nowhere near what they would have been doing if regular game mechanics were in operation and she was recovering a percentage of her total every second, Alcyra closed it again and sighed, rubbing her eyebrows as she tried to think of anything else obvious she should have already been using, then tried to narrow it down since there were enchantments for every single kind of skill she could have used to fortify those skills into omnipotence. In the end, she gave up, and simply headed upstairs to go and enjoy a bath and think more about that cute shopkeeper.

Now that she was effectively immune to damage, it wasn't like she needed to be too concerned about what was coming in her future.

So, she's finally done it, made herself genuinely overpowered.

I'm...of two opinions on this chapter. On one, it reflects the power a Skyrim 'player' has in the world, you can genuinely make yourself unkillable so long as you don't lose whatever item has the Fortify Health enchantment on it. But at the same time, I feel like Alcyra should have still been more limited. I don't know, I kinda wanted to make this a poll, but cba. I've given up on keeping perfect track of the Skill increases and the subsequent experience gains, I'm going to just wing it now and use rough guesses, because, well, I'm lazy af and can't be bothered to do something nobody really cares about xD

Also, the shopkeeper guy, I won't lie, kinda just gave him the same hair as Adam Taurus in my head, minus the horns of course. I love his hair, I genuinely would call it a perfect afternoon if I could just sit next to him and just brush my fingers through his hair. So yeah, Alcyra knows about the other sex! Shock-horror! I might make that little shop be a more regular occurrence as Alcyra gets more interested in finding a partner she actually likes, but I don't know, it might be a bit too original-content for some people to enjoy, since the shop isn't tied to any canon Skyrim character, she's not going to be getting to know the secret son of Farengar or a cousin of Eorlund Gray-Mane and have to duel them for their approval of courting him.

But I still think it's cute and am totally not using it as a coping mechanism for getting fucking married in like a week, how's THAT for a reveal bitches!
