1805 - October 1811
In January 1805, Mr. Wickham died of a heart attack. After receiving the sad news, George Wickham, who was tired of life at university, decided to return to Pemberley with the excuse that he wanted, out of respect for his father, to be in mourning for a few months.
In his will, Mr. Wickham bequeathed his son the sum of £5,000, and in addition, Mr. Darcy assured him that he could continue living in his old house for as long as he wanted rent-free. During the day, Wickham spent several hours with his godfather enjoying the good food and brandy that Pemberley had to offer. In addition to this, he had a clandestine affair with a young maid. With Georgiana, he had a very superficial and courteous relationship. He never flirted with her, either for fear of losing his godfather's favor or because Georgiana was always with her governess.
In December 1805, after completing his university education and graduating with honors, Darcy returned to Pemberley. His father's health had drastically worsened in the past year, and the doctor estimated that he had only a few months to live.
His father, while he had the strength to get up, devoted himself to teaching his son everything he knew about the management of Pemberley and his other estates. He wanted the transition to be as smooth as possible when his son fully took control.
In the summer of 1806, George Darcy died in his sleep. In his will - not surprisingly - he bequeathed all his property to Fitzwilliam and set up a bank account with £30,000 for Georgiana's dowry and another account with £3,000 for his godson.
Wickham was rather disappointed, as he hoped that his godfather would bequeath him more money. But with that money added to what he had inherited in his father's will, he had just over £8,000. He decided not to finish his studies at university and went to London, where some of his "friends" lived.
August - October 1811
For several days, the mood at Pemberley had been festive due to Georgiana Darcy's much-anticipated engagement to one of her brother's best friends, Mr. Charles Bingley.
Bingley met Darcy six years ago at Cambridge. Despite being three years younger than Darcy, they had become good friends. Charles was the only son of a wealthy tradesman who had worked hard and saved over £100.000 to give his son a very good education and future. On his deathbed, Charles's father tasked his son with buying an estate and leaving his past in trade behind.
Both friends were honest and hard-working men, but in temperament, they were very different. Darcy was serious and usually spoke little, while Bingley was naturally happy and optimistic, as well as talkative.
Bingley had two sisters: Louisa and Caroline. Louisa was the eldest sibling; she was married to a gentleman who was going to inherit a small estate when his father died. Caroline was two years younger than her brother, and at 23, she was still single.
Three years ago, Bingley with his sister Caroline had visited Pemberley for the first time. On that first visit, Charles was captivated by his friend's still young sister, while Caroline was very impressed with Pemberley and, to a lesser extent, its owner.
As soon as Georgiana turned 18, Bingley asked permission to court her, and she gladly accepted. The courtship was very brief since both had been in love for a long time. A couple of months later, Bingley formally asked her to be his wife, and to everyone's delight, she accepted. Darcy unsurprisingly had no qualms about giving his blessing.
Since Bingley had not yet fulfilled his father's dream of being a landowner, he decided to lease an estate for a year to have his first experience. He would live there with Georgiana at least for the first year of their marriage. After discussing and visiting a few estates with Darcy, he decided to lease Netherfield Park in Hertfordshire. The estate had an income of £5,000 a year and had the great advantage of being close to London.
In early October, the Darcys, along with Lady Maria Fitzwilliam, arrived at Netherfield, where Charles and Caroline Bingley were waiting for them.
Lady Maria Fitzwilliam was the youngest sister of Darcy's mother. She was widowed and she had no children. Her marriage had been arranged by her parents only for money and connections. Her husband was an abusive man, he used to drink too much and had several mistresses. He died relatively young when very drunk during a horse race, he fell from his horse. For this reason, Lady Maria was totally against - financial means permitting - women being forced to marry simply for political and/or economic reasons. Ever since Georgiana turned 17 and entered society, Lady Maria had taken on the role of "mother" to the young lady. She had accepted the invitation to Netherfield Park to chaperone her since it didn't seem right for Charles and Georgiana to be with only Darcy and Caroline in the house.
Although Lady Maria liked Charles Bingley, she could not say the same of his sister, and she believed that the feeling of antipathy was mutual.
After not seeing his beloved Georgiana for a week, Bingley was very happy when the young lady, at last, arrived. He told his guests that there was an assembly in Meryton that night, and he had already accepted the invitation on behalf of the whole party.
With varying degrees of enthusiasm, the invitation was accepted, and the three travelers went to their respective rooms to rest for a few hours.

Desde hacía varios días, el ambiente en Pemberley era festivo, a causa del esperado compromiso de Georgiana Darcy con uno de los mejores amigos de su hermano, el Sr. Charles Bingley.
Bingley había conocido a Darcy 6 años atrás en la Universidad. A pesar de tener tres años de diferencia, se habían hecho buenos amigos.
Charles era el único hijo varón de un muy rico comerciante que se había esforzado trabajando y ahorrando para que su hijo tuviera una muy buena educación. En su lecho de muerte, el padre de Charles le encomendó a su hijo que comprará una hacienda y dejará atrás su pasado de comerciante.
Los dos amigos eran hombres honestos y trabajadores, pero en temperamento eran muy diferentes. Darcy era serio, y por lo general hablaba poco, mientras que Bingley era una persona de naturaleza feliz y optimista, además de ser locuaz.
Bingley tenía dos hermanas; su hermana mayor, Louisa, que estaba casada con un caballero que cuando su padre muriera iba a heredar una pequeña hacienda, y su Caroline que era dos años menor que el, y a sus 23 años era aún era soltera.

Bingley que aún no había cumplido el sueño de su padre de ser terrateniente, decidió rentar por un año una hacienda para tener su primera experiencia y vivir ahí el primer año de casados con Georgiana. Después de analizar y visitar junto con Darcy algunas haciendas, decidió rentar por un año Nerherfield Park en Hertfordshire. La hacienda tenía una renta de 5000 libras al año y tenía la gran ventaja de que estaba cerca de Londres.
A principio de octubre, los Darcy junto con Lady Maria Fitzwilliam - la hermana menor de la madre de Darcy - llegaron a Netherfield, donde Charles y Caroline Bingley los estaban esperando.
Lady Maria Fitzwilliam era la hermana menor de la madre de Darcy. Era una mujer viuda que no había tenido hijos. Su matrimonio - que también había sido arreglado por sus padres - había sido muy infeliz. Su esposo era un hombre abusivo que bebía demasiado. Se murió relativamente joven cuando muy borracho en una carrera se cayó de su caballo. Bingley con su habitual buen humor, después de estar una semana sin ver a su adorada Georgina, estaba muy feliz cuando la joven al fin bajó del carruaje. Les contó a los recién llegados, que esa misma noche había un baile en Meryton, y había aceptado ya la invitación en nombre de todo el grupo.
Con diverso grado de entusiasmo la invitación fue aceptado, y los tres viajeros se fueron a descansar por unas horas a sus respectivas habitaciones.
