Hello and welcome to NEW experimental fanfic of Kinsou no Vermeil (aka Vermeil In Gold), in which a new inspiration popped into my head in an unexpected way, and for the first time, I will be incorporating a combination of detective-themed elements here as I find it quite challenging, as my other Vermeil In Gold fics have the usual magic-theme story and the other a situated story (see A Stray Magician and Alto's Sensual Escapades), and here this is where I will put the characters to the test.

This fic came to light when I was browsing Youtube on my smartphone, until I came across an uploaded video where I happened to accidentally saw the movie The Big Easy, a 1986 film which stars Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin. It deals with drugs as well as detective-theme on snuffing out police corruption, so this gave me ideas to make a story on this and this one will use characters from Vermeil In Gold.

Another source of inspiration is a manga and anime OVA which features police themes and about dangerous drugs, which involves the victims assuming a BEASTLY form, which leaves traces of it when the user dies, and I made a research on that manga and find it somewhat intriguing.

This is based from the manga Wild Adapter, and I decided to use that as a plot device since it is quite similar to the plot where Obsidian is using illegal concoction on students in the Vermeil In Gold manga (which will be animated in the upcoming episodes).

And given that most of the elements of Wild Adapter is adapted into a two-episode OVA, as well as a 2-episode spin-off OVA (Araiso Private High School Executive Committee) that is similar to the Vermeil In Gold manga chapters and anime episodes as both series involve liquid elements and school stuff tropes, I decided to try something that involves drugs…and see if the reception is good.

More on that will be slowly revealed in the upcoming chapters.

Before uploading this fic, I was sorting out which characters would be used here, and while Alto Goldfield is a definite, having a female lead proved to be quite problematic, given that Vermeil is quite OVERPOWERED while Lilia Kudelfeyt is out of the question given her personality, hence I sort of encountering a roadblock.

But after reading the manga, specifically Chapters 22 and 23 (The Student Council and Activation), which I saw a scene where Elena Kimberlight is semi-naked, as well as seeing her in action and her personality, I decided to use her as Alto's leading lady in this fic due to her COOL and COLLECTED composure. Not to mention how attractive she looked as well as I find her quite…seductive due to her beauty and charisma.

Given that there are few pairings in this manga and anime, I decided to try this out and see if it would attract readers. As stated in the summary, this will be M-rated for the following reasons:

- Somewhat of a series of matured themes

- Horror scenes

- Some random LOVE SCENES between chapters

- Somewhat over-the-top action scenes (which might become violent)

Well then, read on and enjoy!

Ch. 1: Prologue

The scene shifts at a financial district within Ortigia, which is the second largest city where it has many people flocking the place due to an assortment of entertainment and shopping, where people would go there to dine, shop and hang out with family members and friends during weekdays, weekends and day-offs from work.

Since the the emergence of magic within the society, Ortigia's financial district was bustling with life being a commercial hub, thus it is known for selling things that are trending to people, ranging from food to clothes to magical books and even rare magical items.

The scene later shifts to a certain area, where business is thriving the area is frequently being besieged by customers which are a mix of adults and teenagers, and they appeared to be avid collectors, as they are looking and buying second-hand items which are magical in nature, and their reasons for patronizing the said shops are purely economical in nature - cheaper prices and practicality.

You can see several shops selling HOT items for cheaper prices, such as MAGICAL items that resembled a SMARTPHONE, and other assorted items, and despite being second-hand items, they appeared to be in good working conditions, and some of the customers are willing to buy them as long as their desired items are working fine as well as to save money for budgetary reasons, and the merchants are using subtle means in enticing passing customers.

"Hello...please by our items..."

"They are cheaper..."

"...they are in good working condition..."

"You can try them if you like..."

"I promise you will like them..."

"I promise you will get your money's worth..."

"Here are the items on our display..."

"Pick the one you like..."

Then the scene shifts to another nearby shop, where a merchant is also selling second-hand items, but unlike the other shops, this merchant is selling something else and is catering avid collectors, and the scene shifts inside the shop where you can see the items being sold, which turn out to be magical items, all being displayed on the shelves, and one by one you can see the following consoles being on display, which are:

- magical books

- magic herbs

- magic potions

- several bottles of elixir

- pets of magical origins

- magical weapons (legal types)

In a matter of minutes customers passed by the shop, and most of them are avid collectors, and they were immediately intrigued by the items on display and they looked at the items, as some appeared to be unaware that such rare items actually existed, and they began asking the merchants if those items are really something to be owned, which the merchant nodded and assured to them that the items on display are RARE, and are worth buying, saying that these items are worth the money they own as they would be beneficial.

"Are they worth buying?"

"Yes...they are..."

"Seriously?"

"Yes, sir…and they are RARE to find..."

"Hmm..."

"Would you like to try them...?"

"..."

"I promise you will not regret it..."

Though when people with magical abilities became prevalent, life and business went on smoothly as usual, but then there are groups with magical abilities who use them for crimes, and began to make their presence known, doing illegal business such as drug trafficking, and soon it disrupted the daily lives of the Ortigia and nearby areas, and soon are starting to get on the edge, as gang wars erupted and this resulted in gang members engaging in firefights, which claimed innocent lives in the process.

Drug trafficking seemed to be on the rise, and while the Ortigia police were able to manage the cases, another one seemed to cause concern for the residents there, as missing persons are steadily rising, which mostly involves high school students, who went missing for a couple of days, and parents have been besieging the Ortigia police precincts as their children haven't arrive home for nearly a week, and the officers' desks from several precincts are being overwhelmed by the worrying parents.

"My son hasn't been coming home for a few days!"

"My daughter did not even called me!"

"My twin children are missing for several days already!"

"We don't know where they went!"

"Do something!"

"Find our children!"

"You're the police! Find them!"

"Do it now!"

One day, a pair of patrolling Ortigia policemen are doing some rounds, and two cops are having a rather busy day, as they recall seeing several parents reporting about their children missing, and that neither of their classmates have any idea where the missing teens went.

The two patrolling cops admitted that this is alarming and felt that they must find the missing teens or else the mayor would cause the police force to undergo reshuffling, and there the two cops felt quite pressured as they felt that a case like this needs to be resolved or else they would be compelled to rely on the pro heroes.

"Geez…it's been several days since reports are pouring in…"

"Really…it's becoming a headache!"

"Yeah, yeah…"

"Drug trafficking is one thing…but missing high school kids…this is giving me a headache."

"Rather this than the recent events…if you get my drift…"

"Huh? You mean…?"

"Yeah…THAT…"

"Seriously…"

By then the patrolling cops came across an alley, where one of the cops noticed something, and as they stopped, the two cops entered the alley, where they find a few high school students there, based on the school uniforms they are wearing, but then something made the cops feel alarmed, as they saw the bodies lay there in blood, and that they sport something that appeared unnatural:

- Hairs that resembled fur from various animals sprouting from the bodies, mostly on their hands;

- claws and fangs are seen on their bodies;

- Bleeding from mouths and nostrils;

The two cops reluctantly checked the bodies, and confirmed that they are dead, and using maagic to identify the victims, the cops became more alarmed as the bodies are from the missing high school students that were reported by the parents.

"Fucking shit…"

"You got to be kidding me…"

"is this what I think it is…?"

"Damn it!"

"Call for backup! We'll be having quite a day here!"

"How the heck did these kids end up here?"

"Don't ask me! Just call for help!"

"I'm on it!"

Within minutes the Ortigia Police arrived and cordoned the area and more passerby are being told to stay back as the area is now deemed a crime scene and there the passerby saw the state of the corpses, causing them to become apprehensive after seeing that the victims looking like unusual kaijins that can't be recognized due to their BEAST-LIKE appearance.

"Oh dear me…"

"Goodness…"

"How monstrous…"

"What happened to them…?"

"This looks bad…"

"I better instill curfew…"

"Must protect my children…"

"Definitely this is more than an incident…"

Moments later, Alto Goldfield, his familiar Vermeil, and his classmate and childhood friend Lilia Kudelfeyt, happened to pass by and saw the corpses, causing the two teens to feel disturbed by what they saw as this is the first time seeing something like this, and wondered what caused this to happen, feeling sorry for the victims while wondering how the victims ended up like that.

"This is…gruesome…"

"Did you see that, Alto...? They Looked like…

"Yes, Lilia…"

"They looked like they have excess hairs…and they claws and fangs…"

"Not to mention that they are bleeding…from their mouths and nostrils…"

"What do you think happened, Alto…?"

"I'm not sure, Lilia…"

"…"

Vermeil glanced at the corpses and whispered to Alto, saying that she has a feeling that an external factor may have caused this to happen but couldn't discern the cause as she couldn't get close to take a look, and Alto whispered to his familiar saying that the police have the jurisdiction and they will be the ones to solve this particular case.

"Lets leave it for now, Vermeil..."

"Are you sure, Alto?"

"Yes."

"…"

"The police are here…I guess they'll get to the bottom of this.."

"Well…"

"We better go…"

"Fine…"

As Alto, Vermeil and Lilia took their leave, two other students of Ortigia Academy of Magic happened to pass by, and saw the crime scene which made them feel a bit disturbed upon seeing the corpses' states, and overhearing the Ortigia Policemen mentioning that the corpses are the missing teenagers, which made the two Ortigia students feel that the students of Ortigia Academy might become the next victims.

The two students are identified as Shinouji Ryuuga and Jessica Schwarz, who are members of Ortigia Academy's student council, and the two teens decided to tell their Student Council president about this as the particular crime scene they stumbled may happen at Ortigia Academy, which is something they cannot ignore, especially after Obsidian was exposed as being behind the incident that have happened recently at Ortigia Academy.

"We should tell the president about what we saw, Shinouji."

"I agree with you. This is something we can't ignore…especially if this scene might happen to our school…"

"Obsidian is one thing…but this…"

"…"

"We better go…"

"Yes. It's best if we tell the president as soon as we meet with the rest of the student council…"

"Couldn't agree more…"

"…"

As Jessica and Shinouji left, a few seconds later another Ortigia Academy of Magic student happened to pass by, who turn out to be Elena Kimberlight, the president of the student council, and there she saw the crime scene and then overheard comments about the victims being teenagers, and she appeared to have her interest piqued, as she has a feeling that an incident like this may happen to Ortigia Academy, and decided to gather the student council members to have a meeting and discuss this matter, unaware that some members of the student council have already seen the crime scene.

"Hmm…this is something worth discussing with the student council…"

To Be Continued...

Hope you liked this opening chapter, as it served as an introductory prologue on the venue of this story, particularly the place where the crime scene took place where several bodies were found in such a state which would spook many passerby.

The ending of this chapter shows an incident where several high school students went missing, and the Ortigia police force are facing pressure, until two patrolling cops discovered the bodies, along with some MYSTERIOUS elements found on the bodies, which appeared very UNNATURAL.

The characters of Vermeil In Gold make their appearance and came across the crime scene which they initially felt that it is out of their hands and decided to let it be since the police are in charge, but the Student Council members have seen it and no doubt that they will discuss this matter once they are at the Ortigia Academy.

This is the start where Alto would eventually get himself involved since he is now a member of the student council.

Preview:

The story moves forward as the plot shifts to the Ortigia Academy of Magic as the student council members are set to discuss what they discovered.
