Chapter 14: Spock's Wife
After they saw the Excelsior leave, Spock felt pain in his back. "I think we both should get to Sickbay and be checked out," Anna said to her husband.
"I can agree with that," Spock said. Bones was already in sickbay when Spock and Anna entered. "I knew you two would be in," Dr. McCoy told them. "How is your back, Spock, I heard you took a fall?"
"Not great. I would like you to check out Anna first," Spock said.
Anna shook her head. "What are you doing here?" she asked Dr. McCoy.
"I requested a temporary transfer until the birth of your child. Starfleet will find a suitable candidate to take permanent residence here. Anna, please take a seat on the bed. I want to ensure the baby is still healthy," Dr. McCoy gently said. He waited until Anna laid back before using the ultrasound camera on her stomach. As he moved the scanner, he saw four tiny pointy ears.
Anna leaned up to see what had occupied Dr. McCoy. She gasped when she saw the picture and pointed for Spock to see. "Twins," Spock said.
"Hugh," Dr. McCoy called for the other medical examiner to see. "I need to sit down, Spock. Do you know how rare it is for Vulcans to have twins?"
"Yes, Doctor, I am aware," Spock said, "Why did she not show up earlier?"
"Sometimes in human pregnancies, one twin hides the other. I guess this occurred here," Bones replied. "The larger twin hid the other one from view. Anna is farther in the pregnancy, so the other twin can't remain hidden."
"Come on, Anna, we should get to our quarters," Spock told her. Anna got up from the bed, and the two of them left.
"Spock, where do you think you are going? I need to check your back." Bones said.
Spock raised an eyebrow when Anna said, "Go. Let the doctor check your back."
Spock laid face down on the bed, and Bones ran a few scans. "Good news. It looks like you have bruised back muscles. I will give you a hypo chamber for pain. Otherwise, you should be good. Just try to rest for a few days," Dr. McCoy said.
"Thank you, Doctor," Spock said. He got up and left sickbay with his wife.
"Spock, we need to do some shopping for the second baby. We don't have enough cribs or changing tables. Let alone clothes," Anna told Spock.
"All right. Let's go. We can go shopping," Spock told his wife. They walked until they came across a few farmer's markets. "In here," Spock said.
The two of them walked up and saw some mushrooms, but they looked a little funny. "Spock, is that fungus growing on them?" Anna asked.
"You are correct, Anna. Excuse me, may I have a dozen of those, please?" Spock asked.
"Of course, Captain," the Vulcan man said. He took a dozen and put them in a bag.
Spock took the bag from the man. They walked away from the market out of earshot. "We can drop these off on Level three before we return to our quarters," Spock said.
The two of them walked into a shop and looked around. They saw the baby clothes and noticed the baby Vulcan robes. "We need four of these," Spock said. He looked around for Anna and noticed she was gone. "I hate shopping," he told himself. Spock looked around as he walked through the shop. He found Anna looking at a couple of different styled cribs.
"What about this silver Crib?" Anna asked her husband.
Spock looked at the silver crib, which had a cover with buttons over it. He found another button that he pushed, causing the cover to darken. "That is acceptable," Spock said. Another Vulcan salesman approached Spock. "I would like one of these," he said. Spock pointed to the crib first, then a changing table behind the desk. "That changing table as well."
"Of course, Captain. I will place your order. The items will arrive by the end of the week," the Vulcan salesman said.
"That is acceptable," Spock replied as he paid for the items, including the infant clothes.
After they finished shopping, they went to the turbo lift, "Level 3," Spock said. A few seconds later, they were on level three. "Anna, I want you to stay here if they are researching the virus. They could have samples on this level." Spock stepped off the turbo lift, leaving Anna behind.
He looked around the room for the person he was searching for and hit the buzzer when he located him. A young male Vulcan scientist approached and answered the door.
"Captain, can I help you?" the young scientist asked.
"Yes. There is a type of fungus growing on these mushrooms. I would like them examined. I am curious as I have never seen this kind of fungus before," Spock said.
"Understood, I will get right on this," he said. The Vulcan scientist took the bag and then entered the room again.
Spock looked around and located a sanitation station. He used it to wash his hands, ensuring they were clean. After washing his hands a second time, he returned to the lift where Anna waited for him.
"Now, that is done. How about returning to our quarters?" Spock asked, looking into his wife's deep brown eyes.
"Please, I could use a rest," she replied.
"As could I," Spock said. He got on the lift and said, "Level 5."
A few minutes later, they were inside their quarters and asleep, wrapped in each other's arms.
