A/N: Just a little one shot
Dinner with Adam had gone like it usually went with them. Friends, lovers, serious relationship, it didn't matter. Their bond ran deeper than all of those labels and it was always easy to be in each other's presence. They went from the restaurant to Kim's place and she let herself in, Adam following behind her.
"Tonight was fun." She threw over her shoulder.
"It was. It felt good to smile for a change." He removed his coat and set it on the hooks she had by her door.
"It did. Do you want a beer?"
"Not afraid I might fall asleep on your couch?" He chuckled.
"It's a chance I'm willing to take." She pulled two bottles from her fridge and he nodded in agreement. He took his and un-capped it before taking a first long pull. He took a seat at her breakfast bar and quiet fell upon them again. It wasn't awkward but the two knew they needed to talk about the elephant in the room at some point. Adam took a pull of his beer and looked at Kim. He knew they had to talk, and he was hoping that she would take the lead, wanting her to really tell him how she felt. "What happened last night." She started, wanting to talk about Adam's hook-up but not really wanting to find out about it at the same time.
"Won't happen again." He assured her. "It was a stupid move, an immature move."
"You don't have to explain anything to me Adam, you're allowed to grieve the way you want to." She scratched the label of her bottle with her thumbs, not really looking directly at Adam.
"But I shouldn't have done it like that. I should have pushed for us to talk, I should have told you how I felt, or at least someone close to me how I felt, not just drown them out."
"I haven't exactly been available to you either." She hung her head, feeling bad for having kept him at arms-length.
"I know how hurt you were, are, and I didn't want to push but I wanted to be the one that you came to about it and when I wasn't, well I just sat at that bar for nights in a row until I just acted on it."
"Why didn't you talk to Kevin about it, or Trudy?" She knew the special place Adam held in the desk Sargent's heart.
"I tried to but it just wasn't the same. I wanted it to be you because you were the only one that really understood me you know?"
"Why her?" She simply enquired. She couldn't fault him for turning to someone else when she wasn't there for him.
"It was just easy I guess." He shrugged, taking a long pull of his beer. "Being with her was just a way to forget."
"To forget, so much so that word on the street says that you were hung up on your ex?" She gave him a sly smirk.
"Something like that yeah." He scoffed. "I'm bad at this whole, feelings thing, you know that."
"I know, and maybe I am too but I don't think it's too late for the two of us." She sighed.
"What are you saying Kim?"
"I think that maybe we should stop running you know, give us another shot, a real one this time." He didn't know what to answer to that, so he did the only thing he knew how to. He reached across the island and took her hand in his.
"Do you think we can make it?"
"I think that we need to make an effort to talk to each other more but yeah, I think we can."
"You have no idea how often I wanted you to say that to me." He left his beer unattended and walked around her counter space and pulled her in gently for a kiss. Their physical relationship was always easy, but the emotional stuff was always what hurt them, but Adam was going to try his damndest to make it different this time.
"It took me a long time to get there." She admitted as they parted. "And I still have some things to work on but I'm getting there, I just need time."
"I'll give you all the time in the world darling." He pecked her lips. "Promise me one thing."
"Yeah?"
"That you lean on me when you need to. Please let me help you. " He could see that she was struggling with things, it was clear in her eyes.
"I'll try." She smiled softly. "But you have to promise me that you'll do the same."
"Promise." His hands were on her cheeks, but he kissed her forehead. "How about a movie?
"Movie is good." She pulled away from him and grabbed both their bottles. "Your pick."
"My pick?" He looked at her with a smirk. "You never let me pick."
"Maybe it's the new me." She chuckled, making her way to the couch. "Don't just stand there, there's a spot on here for you." She patted the spot next to her on the couch.
"Right here." He plopped down next to Kim. They fell into a comfortable silence after Adam found something half decent and they were just content in sitting there together. They just watched the movie, a comedy and they laughed, made fun of what was on the screen until Kim snuggled into his side when the credits started rolling.
"Do you ever wonder what we were having?" She asked softly.
"Every day." He kissed the top of her head. "I wonder if he or she would have your smile or my eyes; your long, lean body or more my shape. Would they love sports or be more artistic, they float in my head all the time, even when I don't want them to."
"I know you've answered this before but, were you ever mad at me for going in that hotel room? Even if it's just a little bit?"
"Never." He ran his fingers over her arm. "It took some time for me to accept that you knew what you were doing, to trust you completely because I had no say over you or your decision, but I was never mad, not one bit."
"I still dream about that night." She admitted.
"Did you ever tell anyone about this?" He pulled himself away from her slightly and looked at the hurt look in her eyes.
"No." She looked down. "I couldn't tell Nicole about it because she's still fragile and it doesn't take much to trigger that night for her and I didn't want all the progress she's made to go down the drain."
"What about Trudy, or Hailey?" They had become a bit closer with her since that night.
"Hailey wouldn't understand, and Trudy, she's been there for me, but I didn't need her smothering me more than she has been since she found out I was pregnant."
"I told you I was there with you in the hospital room. You could have come to me." He pulled her back into his body and rested his chin against the top of her head.
"I know." She mumbled in his chest. "But being scared of you being mad and all, I didn't want to add to your grief."
"Would you tell me now?"
"Sometimes, I dream I never go in and the girl gets killed. Sometimes I'm the one who doesn't make it. I'm trying to get past it all, I just don't know how exactly."
"Maybe it would help if we talked about it to someone, a professional?"
"Can we start by talking about it together?"
"Sure. I don't want to do that on the couch though. I want to hold you properly."
"Okay." He kissed the top of her head and stood, offering his hand to her. He guided her to her room by the hand, taking the lead and lying down before pulling her with him, wrapping her in his arms.
"Tell me something that made you doubt or scared."
"I've always been scared of losing you."
"You don't have to worry about that darlin' I've got you always. And let's face it, I am hung up on my ex and I can't let her go."
"What about you?"
"Scared that you'd get tired of me and move on, never look back."
"They were never you, you know?" She finally admitted. "Sean, Matt, Blair, they never even came close. You're the one that's always been pumping in my veins, in my heart."
"It was the same for me. Before you, I didn't know what loving someone really meant, but whatever happened after you." He refused to call them by their names. "They were just a space filler, a way to try to get you out of my system. Look how good that turned out." A soft chuckle escaped Kim's lips.
"I'm that unforgettable?" She looked up at him.
"I need you to live Kim, simple as that." Kim simply pushed herself with the help of his leg and kissed him. After his initial surprise and Kim's prying tongue, Adam deepened the kiss. He lowered his hand to her waist and tangled his other hand in her hair. He savoured every second of the kiss and pressed his forehead to hers when they parted. "See?" He tried to catch his breath. "You are the only one that I can make my heart beat like this." Kim placed her fingers against his chest and felt the thundering of his heart.
"I want to be the last one to ever make it beat like that."
"How about we start working on that tonight?
"I think it's a great idea." Kim kissed Adam again and they spent the better part of the night talking about everything, from their first engagement to where everything had gone wrong to where they went from there. They knew they wouldn't have much sleep, but they knew that they would start anew, with no secrets and no obstacle for their love to grow.
