Day 1
Ashfordly and Aidensfield were so insular that Dennis supposed he wasn't used to Jenny receiving this sort of attention, but on their honeymoon he became acutely aware of eyes on her. It left an unsettled feeling in his stomach that plagued him for the first day.
"Oh, come on! Spain can wait until tomorrow, just look at that pool!" Jenny tugged on his arm.
"Jenny-" it sounded way too close to a whine even to his own ears. "The pool will be there tomorrow, too. Why don't we go and explore?" Dennis tugged her back, and Jenny let herself be tugged right back to his arms. "Or we could stay right here.."
"Or we could stay right here." Jenny agreed with a smile as she was led back to bed.
Day 2
On the second morning, something else struck him. When they had gone down for breakfast, Jenny had briefly returned to their room to collect a jacket, and when she walked back, he followed the eyes that followed her. And he realised her eyes were on him. Her face was radiant with a look that he suddenly recognised; she was in love.
It felt silly to suddenly realise the woman who had just married you is in love with you, but then Dennis Merton had never been good with emotions.
"Why don't we have a lazy day beside the pool today?" He offered over breakfast, his thumb lazily rubbing the back of her hand over the table.
"I thought you said why laze about poolside when there's pools at home and no Spain." Jenny teased.
"Aye well, I sounded a bit too much like my father there. And besides, I spotted your swimsuit in the case and I am very very curious about what you might look like in it." Dennis smiled back.
Day 3
On the third morning, life caught up with him. He couldn't remember when he had last had a holiday, and neither could his body apparently, for the moment he relaxed he caught a nasty cold. Not exactly how he had imagined not leaving the bed on his honeymoon.
"Now, stop arguing with me, Dennis Merton! You're staying in bed and that's final! I will get you some books, and something to drink, and you will stay there and not move a muscle until I get back."
"If I had wanted to go on holiday with a doctor I would have married Tricia." He grumbled.
"She wouldn't have you. And besides, I've had medical training too, don't forget. She may dole out the prescriptions but I give the medicine, and the medicine I am telling you to have right now is bed rest, so no arguments!" Jenny argued back lightly.
Dennis huffed, but a smile pulled at his lips nonetheless.
Day 5
Just as he was beginning to feel a little better, it was Jenny's turn.
"We are terrible at this holiday thing." She had laughed tiredly as he brought her a glass of water and a cold cloth.
"Aye well, we agreed in sickness and in health, so maybe we are getting the sickness bit over at the beginning." Dennis offered as he placed the cloth on her forehead with concern etched heavily on his face.
"I feel awful." Jenny admitted.
Dennis sat gently on the edge of the bed. "How about we give up now and head home, and in a year or two I will whisk you away for a second honeymoon like the stars?"
Jenny squeezed his hand and gave a nod, a pale smile on her lips.
