I had a dream about this several months ago, and wrote down what little I could remember, but didn't finish it until now. I've never written before so please don't judge too harshly. ゚ᆬᄎ I hope you like it! (I like my J soft and fluffy?) Sorry for any typos. This was an impulse decision.
Italics are the reader's thoughts (or just for emphasis)
You stared at the clock, waiting. Three hours had gone by since you had finished your work for the day. You were tired, not just tired but downright exhausted. Not to mention you were yearning for your J. He had been gone these past few days, attending meetings and other things at his 'job'. You understood that his work was important and you didn't want to keep him from it. But this night you missed him terribly.
You idly wondered if you should turn on the news to see what he was up to. What anarchy he might be introducing. You chuckled softly to yourself, but dismissed the thought almost as soon as it came to you. You frowned sullenly. The news would only make you miss him more.
You looked at the clock again. 10:30, yikes. You went into the bathroom to quickly run through your nightly routine. As you brushed your teeth, you glanced over at J's area of the bathroom. What a mess… He had left his dirty clothes strewn all over the floor in haphazard piles, some covered in stains of substances you decided not to question. The clothing piles reeked and the ungodly smell entered your nostrils. You almost choked on your toothpaste. J, seriously?! you sighed internally, I'll have to do some laundry later.
After you had finished your routine: brushed and flossed your teeth, washed your face, showered, and changed your clothes, you walked over to your side of your shared bed and sat down.
You glanced over to the phone that lay on your nightstand. J had given you a burner phone and told you to call him if you ever needed him, wanted him, or simply missed him. You had considered this possibility multiple times this night, pondering the thought in the back of your mind. But no matter how hard you thought about it, you wouldn't bring yourself to pick up the dang phone and actually call J. You just…couldn't. It seemed…no matter how many times he tried to convince you otherwise you always worried that you were bothering him. Maybe he was in a meeting, or perhaps, he was too busy…Too busy for me, you thought. You shook your head to clear your selfish thoughts away. You knew J wouldn't like that. He wasn't like that at all. He's a man of his word.
At that moment, the front door burst open, pulling you from your thoughts. You smiled brightly. J's home!
"Honey, I'm home, ah!" J announced loudly as he walked through the front door.
"That joke never gets old," he chuckled softly to himself. He trudged up the stairs, feet pounding down the hallway as he walked slowly towards the bedroom door, searching for you. He burst through the door, making you jump up in surprise. You turned around to face him, greeting him with a smile.
"Oh my gosh! You actually used the front door. Like a normal person." you exclaimed.
J looked at you, a humorous glint in his eye. You paused, looking at him confused. He simply smiled.
"What, ah…no 'hello, J.' or no 'I missed you so much, J.'" he imitated your voice, or at least attempted, making you laugh.
"J, I- I don't-," you couldn't catch your breath as the laughs and giggles tumbled from your mouth. "J, I don't sound like that!" He cackled, joining you in your laughing fit.
"Yes, ya do. Y're, uh, you're just jealous that I can, ah, impersonate ya so well. Also, I, uh, I needed a change from that window. 'S too small. And, ya see, doll face, a guy…like me-" He began, smirking at you. You rolled your eyes at his antics.
"…a handsome clown….Whose tie is crooked…" you cut him off and giggled.
"A guy like me…must maintain a certain amount of…unpredictability, in my, ah…par-tic-ular line of work." J finished, adjusting his 'crooked' tie. You hopped off the edge of the bed and walked over to your tall, giant of a clown.
"Alright. Well, you're right. You know, I did miss you today, J" you replied, standing in front of him. He was so tall compared to you, a whopping six-feet tall. (Little last minute author's note: I don't know whether or not J is 6'0" or 6'1") He was like a human giraffe, you joked. You on the other hand, were a little on the small side. J always found the height difference adorable, although he'd never admit that to you.
"Aww, that's it?" J asked, a big mock frown on his face. "No hug? No kiss?" You giggled at him as you promptly wrapped your arms around his waist and stood on your tip toes to kiss him. He bent down to your level, cupping your cheeks and kissing you back, slightly rougher than usual. His scars brushed softly against you. His lips felt so…soft, despite the roughness. You never knew how to describe J's kisses. But you loved the feeling when he smiled into the kiss.
"Hmm, now that's more like it." J hummed in approval as the two of you parted. You had some of his makeup smudged on your face. But at this moment, you didn't care. You loved him. So, so much. You looked at him with such adoration and pure love in your eyes. He chuckled at you.
"Aww, looks like someone missed me…I'm flattered, doll." He shredded off his trench coat, letting it drop onto the floor. He fumbled with the buckle before pulling off his gloves with his teeth. He turned and frowned at you, really this time. He tilts your chin with his hand making you look up at him.
"Ya know, if you, ah, if ya really missed me so much…ya coulda just called. You can always call me."
"I know. I just…" You trailed off. He had this…this look in his eyes. You couldn't explain what it was or its effects. But you almost couldn't take it when he looked at you like that. Almost…disappointed? Disapproving? Sad? Hurt? You couldn't tell. But he definitely wasn't happy.
"Ya just what, sweets?" He prompted you further.
You began, a little flustered by his question, "I wouldn't want to-"
"Y/N, look at me. Hm?" J was usually very playful in his nature. 'Why so serious?' he always asked. He always used silly pet names with you. Each one more creative than the last, each with its own use for multiple situations. But, when it was needed, he found it helpful to address you by your real name to really get through to you, especially when you seemed upset. When you had…pesky little thoughts like this.
He continued, "You don't bother me. Ya don't annoy me. You never have." He sighed, then clicked his tongue to indicate his seriousness. "Look, listen…I'm a man of my word. You know that. Hm? Now come on. Let's get you comfy in bed, shall we? I know ya tired. Uh, ya might wanna scooch over, sweetheart."
"Ok, you're right, J. I'm sorry." You hopped in bed, waiting for him to join you. He stood where he was, unmoving.
"C'mon, J. Please…" You pleaded.
He walked closer to you this time. "Alright, but you don't need to apologize, ok? You did nothin' wrong. You…know ya did nothing wrong, right?"
You nodded, "Yes. I know. And you know that I love you, right?"
He chuckled at you, "Yes, I know. Don't you know any other words? That's, ah, all ya ever say ta' me."
"Well…with you, I- I guess I don't really know what to say." You replied. He hopped in the bed next to you, launching you up for a moment and you burst into a fit of giggles.
"Hmm. Fair enough. Besides, ah, actions….speak louder than words, toots" he replied. He pulled you close to him and kissed your forehead with a loud 'mwah!' "And you know that you…you complete me. Right?"
You laughed," Yes, of course, J."
He smiled sweetly. "Good," J laid himself on top of you, cuddling you close. The two of you often joked that he was like a 'human blanket', or a teddy bear as he made you feel so warm and…safe. He slung an arm around your waist, cuddling you even closer, nestled into him. He nuzzled his face into your neck, inhaling your scent. You gaze at his 'sleeping' (Author's note: Does this man ever sleep?! ? Please, J, sleep is important.) form, in the darkness. You notice his hair tonight. It looks softer and…fluffier? He must've showered earlier, you thought, well that's a first. His hair usually looked stringy and greasy, save for tonight. You resisted the sudden urge to run your fingers through his soft greenish curls. He kept insisting that he needed a new dye job, given how little green remained. As much as you agreed with him about his hair dye, you liked the colors you were seeing now. Green is a beautiful color on him, you thought, but so is…blond? Or is it brown? You couldn't discern J's hair in the darkness very well. It doesn't matter, you told yourself. Green, blond, brunet… Hell, the man could dye his hair purple and he'd always be the most beautiful, handsome man you'd ever laid eyes on.
"Um, J?" you asked, breaking the temporary silence between you.
"Hm?"
Nope, still awake, you thought.
"I was wondering…" you trailed off.
"Yes, doll?" Your clown prompted you to continue.
"Can we…stay like this?"
You could feel the tension in the air as J hesitated his reply. J never hesitated. He didn't believe in hesitation. He believed every decision was crucial; you either do or die. That whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you…stranger.
You should've just kept your mouth shut. Until J spoke up, voicing his thoughts.
"I think, ah…that you and I…are destined to do this forever." You wished you could see his face. After J says this to you, he tries his best to slip a leg in between yours and anchor himself to you from on top. Despite some difficulties on J's part, you understood. It felt like a promise…a promise that he would always be there for you, that he loved you as much as you loved him. You complete each other.
"…can I hug you?" you asked.
J nodded, "Sure, doll. After all,… my little bunny gives the best hugs."
You smiled, hugging him tightly. "I love you, J."
And no matter how many times you forgot or how many times he had to remind you, you understood his unspoken truth as he hugged you back, squeezing you a bit.
I love you too.
