Whitepaw was completely bowled over as Morningpaw striked the bigger dark brown apprentice to the ground. Once knocked over, Morningpaw dug her forepaws into the center of Whitepaw's shoulder blades, keeping him pressed down flat, and hind paws were making great work of trying to make Whitepaw's bottom half hairless.
"That's enough, Morningpaw," Mistyfoot called out to her apprentice, making Morningpaw spring back off Whitepaw as the tom rolled over onto his back.
Instead of looking angry or put out, like Morningpaw feared he'd be, Whitepaw was staring up at Morningpaw in complete awe. "That was brilliant!" Whitepaw could barely wheeze out the sentence, he was tired and out of breath, unlike Morningpaw who had plenty of experience with fighting and knew the best ways to end a fight quickly. "You have to fight me again!"
Morningpaw repressed the meow of amusement that tried to escape from her chest at Whitepaw's eagerness for a rematch. Battle training was more tricky against RiverClan cat's, their sleek fur was harder to get a paw on, but with the experience of fighting RiverClan warriors in her past life, Morningpaw picked up a trick or two of her own to deal with them.
"I think that's enough for today, Whitepaw," Leopardfur, Whitepaw's own mentor, called out to the apprentice. Making Whitepaw pout but didn't dampen his mood as he brushed shoulders with Morningpaw.
"You have to teach me how to do that!"
Morningpaw made an internal note to herself that she would teach him that move for sure. Whitepaw was a decent apprentice that worked hard and was kind and considerate to not just her, but his entire Clan. Besides Silverpaw, he was the only other apprentice that was giving Morningpaw a chance to get involved in the Clan.
It was just like how the ThunderClan cats treated her the first time she joined ThunderClan. Morningpaw would have to work hard just like she did back then to be accepted.
Morningpaw's ears pricked when she suddenly caught on to the murmurings of their mentors as they began to discuss their mock fight.
"Hardly adequate enough at fishing or swimming, but Morningpaw excels in battle training. Better fighter than any of the other apprentices." Leopardfur's backhanded compliment was rewarding to hear. It made Morningpaw hold her head just a little bit higher.
Everyone fell silent though as a familiar shout of greeting coming from a well known cat, called out to them all, catching their attention.
Morningpaw's and the rest of the training cat's turned their attention towards Oakheart who was being followed by Stonefur, both apprentices scrambled to right themselves, trying to look presentable for the Clans second in command.
"There will be a patrol," Oakheart meowed, RiverClan's deputy stepping forwards to address the assembled cats. "Stonefur and I are already in it. I've come to collect the rest of you, Leopardfur and Mistyfoot, along with both of your apprentices."
Morningpaw felt a quiver go down her spine. Patrolling! It's been so long since Morningpaw had ever been on a patrol. Granted, she would be patrolling the RiverClan side of the border as a RiverClan apprentice, but still the flame-colored she-cat would finally be able to leave the confines of camp.
"Where will we be patrolling?" Mistyfoot asked, sweeping her tail to signal the apprentices to get up and moving.
Whitepaw and Morningpaw practically bounced behind their mentors. Both are eager to get on with the patrol. Whitepaw and Morningpaw darted all around the reeds and bushes, scenting out holes that were big enough for prey, running across sandy areas and flicking pebbles at each other. Typically just each of them getting under everyone's paws in their excitement and it seemed no one on the patrol seemed to mind that much. It was a beautiful day, sunhigh overhead, a gentle breeze and plenty of prey.
They only slowed down and fell in line behind their mentors when they left camp.
"You can see the river from here," Whiteaw said, a small wistful expression pulling at his finely shaped face. "It's kind of freeing, isn't it? To just watch things drift along on their natural course."
Morningpaw could see his point. The river was a sign of freedom. The water's always changing, always flowing, it winds and bends but where it ends, Morningpaw did not know. It was even better for Morningpaw when she caught the ThunderClan border being mentioned by the older warriors.
So we're headed for the RiverClan border with ThunderClan! Morningpaw felt more than excited. The flame-colored she-cat hadn't seen a whisker of ThunderClan since she was pushed into the river by Darkstripe.
"I think we need to show the apprentices how to mark the border." Mistyfoot spoke up above the rest. "Then we'll have them do it themselves."
That was something serious. Marking the borders was tangible proof that Morningpaw was a member of RiverClan. A commitment to the Clan to uphold its borders and protect them. What was a ThunderClan warrior at heart supposed to do?
Nothing apparently. Seeing as their patrol was interrupted by another coming up alongside the opposite side of the river. A ThunderClan patrol, consisting of three warriors and perhaps one apprentice. Morningpaw recognized Whitestorm right away, her heart aching in agony as she spotted Sandstorm, Sandpaw currently, walking with complete grace, a grace that gives away signs of an amazing hunter, the former ThunderClan leader of a past life would forever miss Sandstorm.
The next cat in the group was a swift tabby tom. Morningpaw was having trouble remembering exactly who that cat was. Morningpaw had gained and lost so many cats over a lifetime that name's and faces tend to blur over seasons upon seasons.
However as Morningpaw's jade green eyes turned to the cat leading the patrol, there was no unrecognition, no struggles with overthinking with this one, there was no doubt to who this was, because that dark tabby right there, right in front was none other than the bane to Morningpaw's past lives existence; Tigerstar.
Morningpaw couldn't help but freeze in place. Her pale orange furred chest was nearly heaving, her jade green eyes were stretched wide, her claws dug into the pebbly shore as she bit on her tongue harshly to hold in a screech of pain that doesn't come from physical pain.
A single flashback that threw Morningpaw into a daze, something significant that she could never forget from her past life; "Keep your eyes open, Fireheart. Keep your ears pricked. Keep looking behind you. Because one day I'll find you, and then you'll be crowfood."
Whitepaw's gentle nudge to her side tore Morningpaw's gaze away from the massive, thick-furred, dark brown tabby with pale belly fur. His unusually long, sharp front claws were on full display, more than likely as a scare tactic towards the RiverClan patrol, but Whitepaw stepped in front of Morningpaw to shield her from the view of the ThunderClan patrol.
"Don't worry, Morningpaw," Whitepaw softly whispered so only Morningpaw could hear him. "They're not that scary. I think that lanky warrior one at the back would turn around to flee if they weren't surrounded by a whole patrol."
Whitepaw was gesturing towards the tom Morningpaw didn't recognize. The jade green eyed apprentice could see her denmates point, the warrior did appear ungracefully thin and tall. Though Morningpaw knew they shouldn't judge a cat by looks alone. Still, Morningpaw let out a "Mr-ow, ow-ow," a purr rumbling up from deep inside her chest and replacing the heaving panic.
Morningpaw watched from behind Whitepaw as the ThunderClan patrol set their own borders, causing the RiverClan cats to tense and bristle their fur, but Oakheart kept himself completely poised and calm, appearing unbothered by the ThunderClan patrol, as if they were nothing but beetles beneath his paws.
The ThunderClan patrol eventually moved on. Not sparing any looks towards the RiverClan patrol. Except Sandpaw who openly sneered at them. While the RiverClan patrol remained where they stood, watching them leave.
"Bunch of mouse-munchers," Morningpaw heard Leopardfur murmur under her breath, the dappled, golden tabby warriors' amber eyes were sharpened into slits as she stared off to where the ThunderClan patrol disappeared into the trees.
"Sunningrocks is ours," Stonefur growled, unsheathing and re-sheathing his claws. "ThunderClan doesn't deserve it."
Oakheart laid his tail over his son's shoulder, appearing thoughtful as his amber eyes gazed across the river, "they won't have it for much longer."
Morningpaw shared a wide-eyed look with Whitepaw. Though Whitepaw was filled with wonder and excitement, Morningpaw felt nothing but dread and an ominous forthcoming danger.
