An exclusive interview with the famous pair of actresses from Hollywood's golden age, now in their golden years, retired to a beautiful country home.

Q: Of course you both starred in many classic films, and the story of your romance is now equally well known, but people are less familiar with how you first met.

A1: I hear that film's recently been rediscovered.

A2: She laughs. Certainly not on its merits. It was an old horror film, what you'd call a B-movie. Set in an old country house not so different from this one.

A1: I was the charming ingénue come to rediscover myself in the countryside.

A2: And I the mysterious denizen lurking in the shadows. She stands and lifts her wife's chin. "But there's something about you… Why don't you stay here a while—or forever."

A1: You had me at "forever." I wasn't quite as naive as the girl I was playing, but you can only imagine the effect a delivery like that had on little old me. After the director called cut, I ran back to my trailer blushing something fierce, but she managed to coax me back out again for the next scene.

A2: We were a one take wonder, and not just because the studio was cutting every corner they could find. Of course, it wasn't something you talked about in those days, but after that our little affaire de coeur was an open secret on set.

A1: And I still have all the letters you sent me after—a little more personal and private than a phone call.

A2: Something to cherish in all those long months apart, working on the real films that made us each a household name.
