Phantomhive Manor, 1889
Sebastian smiled at the seemingly terrified avatar in front of him. "Don't worry, child. You see, I'm currently a dog on a leash, you have nothing to fear."
Aang raised an eyebrow at him, "What do you mean? I think demons are dangerous to spirits."
"Generally, yes, but I'm currently bound to my young master by a contract. So, I will not do anything to you, except if my master orders me to. On the bad side, as much as my father may miss me, and as much as I miss him, I cannot leave this boy. I'm sorry.", there was a hint of sadness in the demon's deep voice.
The monk didn't know anything about contracts with demons, so he asked, "So, what do you have to do to fulfill the contract? How long will it last?"
The demon smiled at him, but it was a sad smile, "It lasts as long as the boy lives. I have to serve him and do whatever he orders. My eventual payment in return will be his soul. That is the deal."
"Since you're calling him 'Young Master' I think he's not old, so your contract will last a while and the chance that you can leave and visit Iroh is slim.", the monk concluded.
Sebastian chuckled, "Well, I can protect my lord from any danger from outside. But there are things I cannot do anything about. For example, illness. My young master suffers from Asthma. This is an illness that is incurable, currently. If he was to have an attack and no doctor is around, I can hardly do anything about it. And since he is a very determined individual, he tends to ignore that the attacks get worse and worse lately. No matter how many times I tell him to take a step back to get better.", the demon really seemed worried about his young protégé.
"So, you think, he won't make it for long.", Aang shuddered a bit at this conclusion. The demon nodded with a sad and serious expression.
Sebastian looked out of the window for a moment, morning began to dawn. "Your time here is almost over, my young friend.", he said with a somehow tired voice, "My work will begin in a short time."
Aang was surprised by this. But apparently, they had talked for quite a while, so he thought what he should say. "When your master passes away, would you visit your father? I mean, he really mourns deeply about you, I think he at least deserves to know that you live."
Sebastian stood up and walked over to the window, turning his back to Aang. He held one hand behind his back, the other was raised to his chin. "I'll think about it.", he felt the spirits slowly fading, and in the last moment before Aang was returning to his own world, he heard the demon say, "Thank you, Avatar Aang."
Sebastian took a deep breath, he had just a moment left before he had to begin with his duties. He put on his tailcoat and walked down to the servants' kitchen. The demon took out a small bowl and filled it with milk. Then he walked out the back door and placed it in front of a waiting black cat. As the animal began to drink the milk, he began petting it. If he should really return to his father, he would definitely take her with him.
Ba Sing Se, a year after the war
Zuko was anxious about meeting with his uncle. He shouldn't be, he thought, in the end, he had good news for the old man. But then again, how would his uncle react? The news that one of his sons still lived, but as a demon, it was hard to predict how anyone would react.
The Fire Lord looked unsure at the Avatar that walked next to him. "Are you sure, we should tell him? What if Sebastian decides not to return?", the name of his cousin still felt foreign in his mouth.
Aang tried to smile reassuringly, but failed to do so, "I'm sure he will. Though he's a demon, he didn't seem to be such a bad guy. Besides, I think that Iroh deserves to know, even if Sebastian doesn't return."
Side by side they walked into the Jasmine Dragon. Iroh was standing in the middle of his shop, organizing the waiters. He was surprised to see his nephew and the avatar, but smiled at them, nevertheless. The old man walked up to them and pulled Zuko in a tight hug, before he greeted them both, "Nephew, Aang, it is good to see you. Come on in, I'll make us some tea.". He walked into the back of the shop; the teenagers close behind him.
The former general began brewing the tea while Zuko and Aang sat down at a small table in the kitchen. Smiling broadly Iroh turned to them, "Now, what leads you two here? Your last visit was not that long ago. Not that I wouldn't enjoy your company.".
The avatar and the Fire Lord exchanged a few glances, silently debating who should begin. In the end it was Zuko who spoke up, "Uncle, after our last meeting your suffering troubled me greatly.", the old man seemed surprised, but looked at his nephew with a sad smile, it struck Aang what a similar expression he had seen on Sebastian, "So, I thought I could at least investigate what happened to your son.", the smile vanished from Iroh's face.
He put a hand on his nephew's shoulder, "You didn't have to do that nephew. It Is ok now."
Zuko put his hand on his uncle's hand and continued, "We found out that Fire Lord Azulon and one of his captains wanted to sacrifice him on an altar below Caldera.", Iroh's eyes widened in shock. Yes, he had thought that his father or maybe his brother were behind his son's death, but sacrifice? "But apparently something went wrong. We've visited the tunnels and it was a truly fearsome sight, but nothing of your son.", he took a deep breath and looked over to Aang.
The young avatar immediately took the hint, "Yes, and since we did not find a trace of him, I've contacted the spirit world for a clue. It turned out that he, well, uhm, the ritual was not done properly and so your son, well, he became a demon.", at this point Iroh had to sit down for a moment.
He put his head in his hand for a moment, before he spoke, his voice shaking, "So, you're telling me that my son is alive? But he became a demon?"
The airbender nodded, "Yes, basically. Avatar Roku helped me form a spiritual connection to him and so I was able to speak with him.", the old man's eyes shot up to him in an instant.
His voice still shaking he said, "And what did he say? Where is he?"
Zuko smiled at his uncle reassuringly, taking the old man's hand in his own. The monk continued, "As far as I understood, he's currently bound by a contract outside of this world. He told me how the ritual failed and about this whole demon thing, because I really didn't know that much about it. I asked him to come back, but he said as long as he's bound by this contract he cannot do so. But he said he would think about it once the contract ended. Oh, and before I forget it, he has a name now. His name is Sebastian."
Aang and Zuko watched Iroh slightly worried about him. The former general breathed heavily for a small while before he stood up to finish brewing the tea. After he put it on the table, he pulled each of the boys in a tight hug, tears running down his face. With a tear-stricken voice he said, "Thank you, both of you."
Phantomhive Manor, 1890
It had come just as he had predicted in his talk with the young avatar. One rainy night, he suddenly heard his young master cough heavily in his bed. The demon ran over to him and found the boy struggling to breath in what seemed to be a heavy asthma attack. He bowed over him, taking him by the shoulders, "Young master, calm down. Breathe, slowly, just breathe. I'll take you to a doctor."
He took the teen in his arms and began to run with all the speed a demon could towards the next doctor. Sebastian hammered on the door until a small man opened, shocked to see the tall, dark figure with the glowing red eyes, dripping from the rain, carrying a teenage boy in his arms. Sebastian yelled at him, "Doctor! He has an asthma attack; you must save him."
After a brief shock moment, the physician quickly led him inside and gestured for him to lay his protégé down on a sofa. Sebastian felt somewhat between panic and excitement. On the one hand, he would do anything to protect Ciel, and now that he couldn't do anything it drove him crazy. On the other hand, he was thrilled to finally end his engagement in Great Britain and taste this soul.
The doctor rushed into the room carrying medical instruments. He shoved Sebastian out of the way and began to examine the boy. The demon focused on the fading light in Ciel's fluttering eyes. When it went completely dark, he barely heard the physician say, "He's gone, I'm sorry.", he already knew it when he saw the cinematic record emerging. Quickly it was sucked into the symbol on his hand. Energy filled the demon's body, and he had to be careful not to show the human in front of him his glowing eyes. He took a deep breath, "Alright. Thank you for your service, doctor. I'll call for somebody to pick him up and organize everything else.", the physician nodded with a grave expression.
The other servants were gathered around the table in the kitchen. When they woke up, neither Sebastian nor their young lord were at home. They also had no notice left for their jobs for the day, so they just waited. The rain outside got heavier and heavier. Suddenly there was something heard from outside the back door. Bard opened it to find a rain-soaked Sebastian with the key in hand. He shrieked back, "Sebastian! What are you doing? And where is the young lord?"
Sebastian was immediately annoyed. Obviously, he was trying to open the door. But then he remembered why he was here, and his expression became extremely sad. "Bard, Maylene, Finny, Snake and Tanaka-san, I have grave news. Tonight, the young master died in an asthma attack. I tried to rush him to the next doctor, but it was already too late. I'm sorry.", everyone looked at him, shocked to the core. Then they all began to cry. Finny hugged Sebastian so tight, he thought the gardener would suffocate him, crying in his already soaked jacket.
Bard asked, "But what are we going to do now?"
Sebastian tried to hide his excitement behind a seemingly leveled head, "First, we will organize the funeral. We owe the young lord this last service. I don't know who will inherit this mansion afterwards, but I will see to it, that you all can stay here and keep your jobs."
Maylene blushed and asked, "Are you not going to stay too, Sebastian-san?"
Sebastian sighed, "No, I'm sorry. I recently received news from my father and so I think, my place will now be on his side.", everyone stopped crying for a moment. They never heard Sebastian talk about his family. And now he wanted to move to his father? Their thoughts were interrupted by a deep voice, "Alright everyone, we have a funeral to organize, let's get to work."
A few days later mourning bells rang in London. The Earl of Phantomhive, the last of his family had died young and was now put to rest by his trusted servants and friends. Sebastian, Tanaka, Bard, Finnian, Snake and Agni carried the coffin. He would be buried among his parents at the mansion later on. So, they put him on the Undertaker's carriage instead of in an open grave. Sebastian sighed and put a hand on the closed coffin, "May you find peace, young master."
He felt a hand on his shoulder. It was Agni. They nodded to each other. Over the course of their relationship, they had become friends, one of the few people I can call that, the demon thought. The silent moment was interrupted by a crying Lady Elizabeth that threw herself in Sebastian's arms. She was crying so much; Sebastian didn't understand what she was trying to say. Trying to calm her down he took her hands in his, "Don't worry, my lady. None of us was able to help him, not even me. He's in a better place now. And you're still very young. At your age and considering your beauty and noble heritage, there will soon be another suitor coming for you.", this somehow stopped the tears somewhat and he was able to lead her back to her family. Sebastian took a deep breath. Everything was now organized; the mansion would go to Lady Elizabeth. She would take good care of it and its servants. And they would protect her from anything coming at her. He took the carriage back to said mansion, together with the rest of the servants. There was someone he still wanted to get before he went on. Over the last few days, he had packed his suitcase and took a small basket, putting a cushion in it and made it cozy. Back at the mansion she already waited for him. Black the cat was already excited about the basket. He took her up, his suitcase in the other hand and looked at the mansion one last time, "Goodbye, my young master."
Ba Sing Se, two years after the war
It had been more than a year now since Aang had spoken to Sebastian. Slowly doubts crawled up to him, if the demon would really come back to Iroh. Anyways, the whole group came back to Ba Sing Se for diplomatic reasons. He, Zuko and the Earth King needed to talk about the fate of the colonies, and Katara and Sokka as representatives of the water tribes couldn't hurt. They stayed at Iroh's tea shop for the whole trip. The old man beamed when he saw them all.
In the dark of the night a black figure approached the building, silently he said, "So, this is your tea shop, father?", chuckling afterwards. The figure saw a sleeping Appa outside and concluded, "I guess, we have guests.", he quietly opened the locked door and went inside.
Careful not to wake up anyone he put his suitcase down near the entrance and took off his coat. Then he placed the basket with a sleeping black cat in the kitchen. She would love that place. Following his demon ears, he went over to one room in particular. Sebastian opened the door about half a foot wide, he knew the snoring voice behind it. He smiled at his father's peacefully sleeping form.
Thinking of what to do until everyone was awake, he started by cleaning the kitchen. It was not that dirty, but the status quo could be improved. He felt dawn approaching and began to think about making breakfast. First, he had to find out how many guests were there. So, he began looking in every room. There was his cousin, a small girl, almost as pale, but quite dirty, then a tanned boy, slightly smaller than his cousin, and a girl that could be his sister. Sebastian stopped at her sight for a moment. Her hair was magnificent, how it fell in thick locks down to her waist. He felt energy vibes coming from her, maybe she had some sort of healing powers? In the last room slept the avatar. A small animal was curled up beside him. It immediately opened his eyes at the opening door. The demon saw in its eyes that it would wake up the boy if he didn't do something at once. So, he knelt down and held one of his hands out, quietly, with a soothing voice he spoke, "Hey there, little one. No need to be scared, I'm a friend. Come here, I'll get you a treat.", and really, the animal came over and quickly went from his hand to his shoulder. Sebastian petted it behind its head. He silently closed the door, "Now, little friend, what do you want?"
He walked back into the kitchen, where the animal hopped onto one storage. In it Sebastian found a bowl with lichees. He smirked at the animal, "You know what you want, eh?", he cracked one open and threw it into the air, just so that it made a nice arc, and the animal could catch it. It happily began eating. Sebastian took his tailcoat off and put on an almost white apron, fastened at his hips. He went through the different storages and thought for a moment. Then he settled on rice dumplings with a sweet light sauce and fresh berries. Simple, yet delicious and enough of it there to fill everyone's stomach. His gaze wandered to the tea rack. It was quite massive, as expected. He quickly examined it, everything he needed was there. He wanted to make the same blend as the night he was sacrificed. Happily, he began cutting the fire lilies in small bits.
As Iroh awoke, he smelled the scent of a delicious jasmine tea. Was his nephew already awake? And where did he learn to make such high-quality tea all of sudden? Beside it, it also smelled of delicious food. Was he dreaming? Or did Zuko also learned to cook? Did he oversleep? The old man rubbed his eyes. It was barely sunrise. He did not oversleep. Slowly he stood up and dressed himself. Whatever was going on in his apartment, it was better to check on it with clothes on. As silent as possible he stepped out of his room. A lot of his young guests would not be awake by now and he did not want to disturb them.
Almost sneaking he walked up to his kitchen and froze in shock at the sight. First, it was possible that the room had never been that clean. The second thing was the tall figure that stood at the hearth, apparently cooking. The man had black hair and wore a white shirt with a black vest over it and black trousers and shoes. He had the sleeves of his shirt rolled up and wore white gloves. Also, Aang's lemur Momo sat on one of the man's shoulders, happily munching lichees. Iroh felt his heart miss a beat. His eyes filled with tears and stuttering he asked, "S-Sebastian?".
The figure stopped for a moment mid-movement. Iroh couldn't see it, but Sebastian's eyes widened. He took a deep breath, before he turned around, smiling at his father, "Yes, Dad, I am Sebastian.", he saw the tears in his father's eyes and had to suppress some himself.
Iroh took a step towards him, slowly at first, then he ran up to his son and hugged him tightly. Sebastian was surprised at first, then he returned the hug. The old man sobbed into his shoulder, "My son, I'm so glad to see you. You can't imagine how much I missed you."
Sebastian pulled away first. Questioningly he looked into his father's eyes, "But, they told you what I became, what I did?", Iroh just nodded, "And you're still willing to take me back?"
His father smiled at him, cupping his face, "Of course, my son. I'm just so happy that I can hug you again. And I need to ask you of your forgiveness as well. I shouldn't have acted the way I have. I should have protected you better."
Sebastian smiled at his father in return, "There's nothing to forgive, Dad.", after which Iroh pulled him in a hug again. Then Sebastian remembered the rice dumplings and quickly pulled away, rushing towards the hearth. Iroh rubbed the tears from his eyes, smiling at his son, trying to save the breakfast.
