Musical Meet Cute
Writer's Month 2022
Evie had shown everyone who wanted, and those who didn't want, to see the program pamphlet of this new musical, because there it was, her name, in all caps letters – costume design: EVELYN MILLS. It was a big deal, Uma gathered. Her eccentric, colorful costume designs that she'd been doodling in the margins of her middle school notebooks already finally paid off. It wasn't exactly the kind of fashion people wore on the streets. But for the stage? Match made in heaven.
Now, Uma didn't exactly consider herself a close friend of Evie. They've been on the fringe of each other's social circles on account of sharing a best friend. Mal. Well, Uma considered her a frienemy. They'd been rivals in middle school and gotten in touch again toward the end of high school. Sure, usually Uma preferred to hang out with her boys, Gil and Harry, but on occasion, ever since graduation, they'd all hang out together. Uma, Gil, Harry, with Mal and her friends Evie, Carlos and Jay. So she knew Evie and she was happy for Evie, really. This was a major break, a great chance.
However, that did not mean that Uma wanted to go to a musical just to see these costumes worn. But Evie did that whole thing with the big eyes and the pout, while Mal stood behind her girlfriend giving Uma the darkest glare possible to make her say yes. And urgh. So Uma committed herself to go and see a musical. That cheesy stuff was not exactly her cup of tea, but oh well.
"Harry and Gil managed to ditch?" Jay asked when she reached them.
He was the only one standing alone. Mal was busy listening to Evie's rapid-fire talk. Apparently she'd also gotten into the musical, beyond just designing the clothes, she had really grown dedicated to it and loved hyping it up to anyone who'd listen. Her girlfriend was someone who'd always listen to her. And Carlos, ah. Carlos had brought himself a little distraction in the form of his boyfriend.
"Harry said he'd rather cut off his hand than go to a musical," Uma shrugged. "I offered him a knife, but he just flipped me off and walked out. Gil's the only one with a valid excuse though. He's got work. I considered doing as Harry, but then Evie will just haunt me with that pout..."
Uma made an exasperated gesture before offering a half-shrug. Jay chuckled and nodded his agreement. It would be easier to sit through two hours of musical than to disappoint Evie.
"Didn't think your Bennie-boo would come to this though," Uma nudged Carlos. "Mh?"
"Oh, I'm actually only partially here for Evie," Ben offered her a smile. "My childhood best friend is playing the lead character. I don't think I'd live long if I missed the premier."
Carlos shuddered at that. "Yeah. Audrey can be a bit... scary."
He was holding onto Ben's hand, leaning against his arm. Those two were the brand of cute that made Uma roll her eyes. Had a real meet cute, where Ben's dog had scared Carlos up a tree and in the end, Ben managed to help Carlos overcome his fear of dogs. Now, they ran an animal shelter together. Uma, she was a bit more skeptical of these kind of things. Love at first sight and such.
"Come on, let's get in then and claim our seats," called Mal out before kissing Evie's cheek. "I'm guessing you're going to check in on everyone, make sure all costumes sit perfectly?"
"You know it," Evie smiled, that love-sick smile she had only for Mal. "I'll join you later."
Couples. Uma rolled her eyes, again, and fell in line with Jay somewhere behind Mal leading the pack. Maybe she should have forced Gil and Harry along on account of more singles being here.
"What's this thing even about?" Uma turned toward Ben at that.
"Oh, it's a modern take on Sleeping Beauty, my friend Audrey plays Briar Rose."
Uma made a non-committed noise. She'd never been much for fairy tales. Yet her interest changed when they all sat down and the curtain first opened to the lead sitting in front of a spinning wheel on a platform in the center of the stage, singing a soft, sad song about the celebration of her birth, while actors played it out around her. Not that Uma paid attention to any of them. She was fixated on the beauty sitting at the spinning wheel. The pink leather dress she was wearing was clearly inspired by Disney's version of the story and it looked good on her. So did the baby blue and bright pink dyed hair falling over her shoulders in broad curls. The melody spilling from her lips was enchanting but so were her lips themselves. That much for not believing in love at first sight.

Audrey was how Evie had gotten the gig to begin with. Because she'd been wearing one of Evie's costumes to the audition, to leave a lasting impression. It had worked and they had not just been impressed by her flawless singing. She wasn't going to lie, when Ben had started dating Mal, she had not been a fan. But that relationship was rather short-lived anyway and Audrey more or less did like Carlos, whom Ben had only met thanks to Mal. And ever since Ben and Mal had broken up, Audrey had formed a sort of friendship with Mal. Mal's girlfriend though, she Audrey liked. Partially thanks to all the pretty dresses that Audrey got to model for Evie and Audrey had always enjoyed playing dress-up. Another reason why this new career was perfect for her.
"Ah, I am so glad you guys could make it," Audrey squealed and opened her arms wide.
She first of all headed for Ben, hugging him tightly. Carlos quickly joined that hug, gushing about how great Audrey had done. Yes, she definitely liked that one. Next up were Mal and Evie, Evie squeaking into her ear about how beautiful she'd been up there. Last was Jay, who patted her on the back with a broad smile. But... there was still someone else standing. And oh. She was beautiful, Audrey didn't think she'd ever seen anyone this beautiful before in her life. The crooked smile on her perfect lips promised danger. She wore a leather jacket in a dark teal color that matched her countless thin braids that reached down to her waist.
To her surprise, the other woman spoke up. "You were impressive, princess."
"I... ah, thank you," Audrey flushed pleased, offering her hand. "I'm Audrey."
"Uma. The one who saved Mal's ass a bunch in our childhood."
"You can't just say 'friend', can you?" Mal heaved a sigh and shook her head.
Audrey raised her eyebrows in mild surprise. She'd heard of Uma before, but since she only very rarely spent time with the friends of Ben's ex-girlfriend and current boyfriend. If she'd known Mal had friends as breathtaking as Uma, then she would have come along more often.
"C'mon," Mal rested a hand on Audrey's shoulder. "Unless you have other plans, how about you join us for a celebratory dinner? Ben's paying."
Audrey smiled pleased. "Well, that's something I'm not going to say no to."

Uma had spent most of dinner talking to either Jay or Audrey. The couples, as usual, were quite preoccupied with each other. Though she was going to cut Mal and Evie some slack, since they were literally celebrating Evie tonight so she deserved the attention. They were, however, also celebrating Audrey. And Uma loved taking that opportunity to get to know Audrey some. By the end of the night, Uma returned home with a pleased smile and a number saved on her phone.
Now, she didn't want to seem too desperate – even though she found herself quite enchanted and wanted to see Audrey again soon, preferably all alone. She let a whole day pass, before she saw something that sparked an idea. A music festival at a lake, all about musical tunes. So she casually texted Audrey about it, asking her if she wanted to go to it, together.
What, can't find a friend to go with you? I don't mind, it sounds fun!
Uma smiled amused and considered her answer. I wasn't thinking of going with a friend ;)
Silence. It checked as 'read', but no typing dots. Mh. Had Uma gotten a wrong read after all?
Oh. I'd love that. I'll see you on Saturday then [pink sparkly heart emoji]
A pleased smile stretched over Uma's lips at that as she rolled over onto her back. Perfect.

Audrey had tried on ten different outfits before throwing herself into her heap of clothes and giving in. She reluctantly called Evie to help her pick the perfect outfit for her date. Evie was way too excited, but it helped Audrey ease her nerves. They dispersed entirely once she saw Uma, who looked downright sinful in the skin-tight black leather pants, getting off her bike. Oh come on, putting a hot girl on a bike was just unfair, how was Audrey supposed to deal with that.
"Hey," Uma grinned as she put her helmet away. "You look gorgeous."
"So... So do you," Audrey swallowed hard. "I was... a bit surprised, that you asked me out."
"You were?" Uma raised one eyebrow at her. "C'mon, I brought a blanket to sit on."
She led the way over to an empty spot on the grass, close enough that they could see the wide stretch of the lake but still be close enough to hear the music. After spreading the blanket out, Uma sat down and patted the spot next to her. Audrey was glad to join her.
"I mean, I know you're Mal's ex. I didn't think..."
"That you'd be my type?" Uma looked at her amused. "Well, Mal's my ex for a reason, mh?"
Audrey flushed at that, though she felt slightly pleased. The music started and a soft melody washed over her. Ah, she'd always loved music, not just singing but also listening to it. The more she relaxed, the more she leaned into Uma, until she had her head resting against Uma's shoulder.
"Say, what is it you do, for work I mean?" Audrey asked softly after they sat in silence.
"I'm a cook. I work in our family restaurant," replied Uma. "We used to all hang out there after school all the time. Since graduation, I started working there."
"Family restaurant, mh?" Audrey's smile thinned a bit. "That sounds... nice."
Uma wrapped one arm around Audrey's waist. "Not so close to your folks?"
"Not... particularly. My parents are diplomats, they always traveled all over. I basically grew up with my grandmother, who... has always been cold. Ben and his parents were practically my family, I spent as much time as I could over at their place as a kid."
They fell silent after that for a bit, simply enjoying the show and leaning closer and closer into each other. When a romantic ballad found its end, Audrey tilted her head back daringly and placed a soft kiss on the corner of Uma's mouth. Uma smiled as she turned toward Audrey for a proper kiss.
~*~ The End ~*~
Author's note: Stretching the definition of "fashion world" just a tiiiny bit to fit my needs ;D But I just HAD to do something with Descendants with the "melody" prompt!
