Chapter 1.

.

You enter this world at your own risk. This is the future, not a future that will be but one that might be. This is a world of freedom, in which every man and woman has the right to make their own choices, and pay their own consequences. The young woman you see entering this building and ignoring the protesters is named Elizabeth, known to friends and family as Liz. She is about to make a bargain, and have to live with the consequences. This is the kind of bargain that can only be made in the Twilight Zone, at least for now.

.

Liz waited for dr Conway until she showed up. Conway showed up, and seemed relatively nice, given what her job was.

.

Conway: Ms Parker, I'm dr Conway.

Liz: Call me Liz.

Conway: Okay Liz. You are aware of the business deal you wish to make with us?

Liz: As I understand it, you give me $250,000, and in one year you kill me and take my organs.

Conway: That's exactly right. I need to make sure you understand the consequences.

Liz: I know I'll die in one year. But in the meantime I get to live the good life.

Conway: Maybe, but do you really feel that's worth throwing your life away?

Liz: Actually yes. I'm 18 now, and I work two lousy jobs because my family needs the money.

Conway: Is your family putting pressure on you to do this?

Liz: They don't even know I'm here. But yeah, we're behind on our rent, and my little sister needs an operation. I don't want to work several jobs my whole life just to always be afraid of not making rent or being one broken arm away from the gutter.

Conway: I've seen a number of others make this deal, and they spend their last year in terror of what's coming.

Liz: That's their problem.

Conway: I need to explain your rights. You will be given a medical examination, they have to determine whether your organs are healthy enough to qualify. If you sign the contract, you will be given the money immediately, either in cash or to your bank account.

Liz: Can I do some cash and some to my account?

Conway: Absolutely. You would have the legal right to back out of the contract before the year is over. Should you choose this option you would have to return the money, plus interest.

Liz: In other words I'd be in debt for the rest of my life.

Conway: Indeed. Occassionally someone wins the lottery and uses the winnings to back out of the contract.

Liz: I'll buy some tickets, but don't hold your breath.

Conway: Okay, let's get to your medical exam.

Liz: Mind if I ask, you seem to be trying to talk me out of it.

Conway: I just want to make sure you really want to do this.

Liz: You sound a little like those consistent lifers protesting outside.

Conway: I do believe that in the right to make this contract, but I also have to look people in the eye when they're given a lethal injection. It can be a difficult job.

.

Liz was examined, and it was determined that her organs were healthy enough to be given to some of this corporation's clients and investors. With no hesitation she then signed the contract. It was May 6th. On the next May 6th she would be euthanized and her organs given to the very wealthy.
