Chapter 5
.
As the deadline got closer and closer, Liz became more and more nervous. In late January her smartphone showed the number of days remaining as 99, down to double digits. People were talking about the upcoming baseball season, whether the Salem Witches could hold on to the World Series championship, or whether the Roswell Invaders could take it this time. Liz knew she wouldn't be alive when the season ended. She hoped she could see all the remaining stadiums before May 6th. She was also worried she would regret seeing the sights, or spending her remaining days with her family. In April, with less than one month before her scheduled execution, Liz finally made contact with a member of the Underground.
.
Liz: Hello, what should I call you?
John: Call me John Brown. It's not my real name but it is someone whom I greatly admire.
Liz; Fair enough.
John: I'm not going to lie to you, there are only bad options for you right now. We can hide you, probably in Canada or Mexico. Both countries have enough sympathizers who hate what's happening to this country, and are willing to protect refugees. We do however need money to operate. Whatever you still have from what they gave you.
Liz: I've heard of a scam, people say they're from the Underground, offer to help people like me, and then just take the money and run.
John: And you're worried that I'm just a grifter.
Liz: What guarantee do I have that you're really from the Underground?
John: My word of honor.
Liz: And if that's not good enough?
John: That's your problem. But what have you got to lose?
Liz: Fair enough. Okay, I'm in. And I'll get you money, one way or another.
