Chapter 6
.
Liz knew that John Brown was right, she had nothing to lose by taking a chance on him. She had about ten thousand dollars left, but she wanted to leave something to her mother when she died. There seemed to be only one way to do both, that was to rob a bank. Liz didn't feel she owed society anything. It left many like her behind, expected them to sell their organs to the ruling class, or go on reality television and kill each other for money. Society seemed to expect people like her to become criminals, might as well live up to the reputation. She also reasoned that the worst that could happen was she would be killed, but as she was less than two weeks away from her execution that threat seemed to matter less. It wasn't hard to buy a gun, no background check or waiting period in America today. And like many teenage criminals, she was foolish enough to believe it would be easy, that she could just take the money with little or no trouble. It was not as easy as the movies made it seem. People panicked when this young woman walked in with a gun. They started screaming in terror, and this caused Liz to panic and shoot her gun. Liz shot a random woman, and immediately this 39 year old mother of three was dead. Liz hadn't intended to kill anyone, but she knew that she was morally and legally responsible. When she heard the police sirens she knew that there was no way out. Her only real options were to be arrested, or blow her brains out right here in the bank. Liz found the second option tempting, but she was still scared of death. So in the end Liz surrendered to the police. Sheriff Howard Perkins placed the handcuffs on Liz, and she knew that her life, at least her life as a free woman, was over.
