"Wear this. It will keep you safe."
Asabel had had the same dream ever since she had come to Jorvik. A voice spoke to her, but she couldn't see who it belonged to, nor could she make any sense of what was going on. She'd always wake up before finding out anything of importance.
This time, a knock on the door tore her away from her puzzling dream. Once again, the mysteries in it would go unsolved. The young woman looked around and remembered where she was at. She was laying on a bed at an inn in a small part of the island of Jorvik called Moorland Stables.
"Come in," she spoke, sleepily.
Linda Chanda entered the room. Asa had only seen her once before, when she had first come to Jorvik a week ago. "Good morning, Asabel. How are you feeling? You look much better than you did."
Linda was one of the few people Asa had been able to meet. She had been stuck in bed for the week, and she had only met a few people so far. "I feel like I got hit by a truck," Asa replied, sitting up.
"A semi or a pickup?"
Asa thought for a moment. "A pickup," she finally answered.
Linda smiled. "Well, that's an improvement from when you first came here. Any luck recovering your memories?"
"No," the other girl sighed. "I still don't remember much of anything before I woke up in this place."
Linda nodded, sympathetically. "It'll be okay. It might just take time. For now, you can rest in Moorland as long as you need to."
Asa stood up. "I really need to get out of here. I've been cooped up for a whole week. I should start trying to find clues as to what happened to me."
Linda seemed nervous. "What will you do?"
"For starters, I need to get dressed. These pajamas are really comfortable, but I don't want to walk around Jorvik in them."
Linda giggled. "Alright. I'll wait outside for you." Then, she left the room.
Asabel walked to a table, where she found her clothes folded up, nice and clean. They were the clothes she was wearing when she had first woken up in this unfamiliar land. She put them on, then combed her hair.
As she was getting ready, Asa touched the necklace around her neck. She didn't know how long she had had it, but she was told never to take it off. Suddenly, as she held the pendant in her hand, a melody flooded her head. She hummed, then sang,
"In sunshine or rain,
I'll be with you again.
Just hold on to hope,
And let go of the pain..."
Asa tried to remember where she had heard the song, but try as she might, she couldn't.
It was all so frustrating.
When she was dressed and completely prepared to go, Asa walked outside the inn, where Linda was waiting.
Asa immediately squinted her eyes in pain. The sun was shining, brightly that morning, and not a cloud was in the sky.
"Are you okay?" Linda asked.
Asa struggled to adjust to the light. "Y-yeah. It's just...been awhile since I've been outside."
"I'll give you a moment. There's no rush."
Asa took a deep breath, looking at her arms, then slowly up at the sky. After a few minutes, she exhaled. "Okay. I'm fine now. Thanks for waiting on me."
"No problem," Linda stated. "So, what do you want to do?"
"I think I should go somewhere and see if my name appears in any records," she replied. "I don't think I'm from here, but I need to make sure."
"The town hall in Silverglade Village would be the best place to start," Linda informed her. "It would take awhile to get there on foot, though. Can you ride a horse?"
"Yeah."
"Great! We can ride there together!"
Linda seemed excited and told Asa to follow her. She approached a stable filled with horses. Another young woman was tending to them. "Hey, Maya, this is my friend, Asabel," Linda introduced.
Asa wanted to say that they weren't friends and that they barely knew each other, but she didn't have a chance to.
"Are there any horses Asa can ride? We're going to Silverglade Village."
"There sure are. Here's one that just came in the other day."
Maya showed Asa a black horse. "This is a Jorvik Warmblood."
Asa stared at the horse and hesitantly reached out her hand to pet his nose. "Hollowguardian," she said.
"What?" Linda and Maya both asked.
"His name is Hollowguardian," she repeated.
"How do you know that? He was just brought here a week ago."
"I...I just have a feeling..." Asa trailed off. "Anyway, is it alright if I take him out riding?"
"Of course!" Maya exclaimed, joyfully. "Just bring him back here when you return."
Asa mounted the horse while Linda mounted her own horse, Meteor. With Linda in the lead, Asa followed her out of Moorland into Silverglade Village.
"Here's the town hall," Linda said, getting off Meteor. They stopped in front of a building and went in, leaving their horses outside.
While Asa asked a worker questions, Linda's phone rang. Linda excused herself and went outside to answer the call. Asa soon joined her outside again.
"What did you find out?" Linda asked.
"Nothing," answered Asa, disheartened. "My name isn't in any of their records."
Linda suddenly looked serious. "Can we talk somewhere where there aren't any people?"
"Sure, I guess."
They got on their horses and rode to a secluded spot. When they were alone, Linda took a deep breath and asked, "Do you believe in magic?"
Asabel thought for a moment. "In my heart, I do, especially when music starts. It's freeing."
"I mean, real magic."
"Anything is possible."
"Okay, because what I'm about to tell you is extraordinary." She paused, then continued. "There are some people who want to meet you, but the place you've got to go is...unusual."
"What are you talking about?"
"I know some people who may be able to help you," Linda explained. "However, the place they want to see you is outside of space and time. It's a bit hard to explain."
"There's no need for you to," Asa said. "I need all the help I can get. Take me there."
"Follow me." Linda began riding, and once again, Asa followed. This trip took quite awhile, but Linda finally stopped once they arrived past a town called Valedale. "Look at the ground," Linda told Asa.
Up ahead of them was a dirt path that formed a spiral in the grass. "Keep on the path no matter what."
Asa did as she was told, riding Hollowguardian along the spiral. As they got closer to the center, a portal opened, and Linda and Meteor walked into it and disappeared. Asa and Hollowguardian did the same.
Asa found that the portal led to a strange place unlike any she had ever seen. It looked like a floating, circular stone island surrounded by a cloudy, purple sky.
Besides Linda, there were two other girls on horses, an older woman, someone wearing a cloak and hood, and a small blue squirrel. Linda and Meteor stood beside the two others that were on horses.
Asabel looked at her surroundings and at the other beings who watched her, closely. Somehow, this place was familiar, but yet, she swore she had never been in a place like this before. She got a good look at the strangers and broke the silence, her eyes widening. "YOU!"
