I know it's supposed to be around here… somewhere.
Sammi huffed and stopped walking. The entrance to the supposed room where a person or persons were using magic banned not only within the walls of Hogwarts but Magical Britain as a whole, was right where she was standing. At least, that's what she'd been told, but evidently, there was nothing but a wall.
The closest door? Well, that was an easy one. It was dozens of feet away.
She didn't like getting pranked anymore than her sister Sarah did and despite their friendliness, a trait within the Goldhorn family that earned them renown, there would be vengeance. Nobody made her waste her time — Giannis' teachings could come in handy yet, even if they weren't to be used on law-breakers but rather a few stupid boys who thought manipulation of a Prefect was funny.
Sammi cursed under her breath in Greek, doing so on the off chance a Professor was nearby. She paced back and forth, wanting nothing more than to catch those responsible for the rumoured usage of blood magic. If that failed her, a practise dummy or Gabriel from Marcus' group would do just fine.
I can't wait to get my hands on them. Goodness, they'll think an angry Sarah's nothing by the time I'm thr-
She paused, turned her head and saw it. Sammi was so confused, so mystified by its appearance, that she had to rub at her eyes and pinch her own cheek to make sure she wasn't sleeping. How else could a door appear on a wall that she'd cleared seconds ago?
"Is somebody there?" Sammi asked aloud, her voice quiet enough that it failed to echo through the empty halls.
There was no response to her question.
Nobody's inside here either, right?
Sammi prayed to Athena, Artemis and every other ancient Greek deity that her older relatives still claimed held power that the answer would be a resounding no — if she got any sort of response regardless of what it was, there'd be a problem. Quite a big one too, considering it was in her mind.
Thankfully, no response came and she huffed.
That was all well and good, but how had the door appeared out of thin air?
She was wholly curious, Giannis considered that her greatest fault, but that didn't stop her from taking hold of her wand. It didn't stop her from raising it and moving towards the door either, and finally, that curiosity of hers led to the slight opening of the door.
Had she been the character of a trashy romance novel that Sarah read or an action-type book that Marcus read, she was sure the reveal would've been something entirely too grand. Perhaps figures in cloaks and masks reciting a spell in the oldest form of Latin or a naked group of them dancing around some archaic design on the floor.
Whatever the books they'd read would have, she doubted it'd be anything close to what she saw; one figure in his Hogwarts robes — Slytherin green — scratching his head as he tried to figure out a complex bit of magic. She could tell that not solely based on astute observation skills, but how close that he was stood to the door.
Sammi could practically make out the runic drawings on the pages he was reading. As interested in them as she was on account of her innate intellectual curiosity (in her own words) there was a job to do. It didn't matter if this boy was one of Harry's friends like she thought he may be, all that mattered was winning an accolade and confiscating his belongings.
Obviously, she'd turn them in… after she made a copy for her own private collection.
Giannis would be proud, all of them would be.
"Stay still, raise your hands, keep your back to me and drop the book," Sammi said, one order given after the other as she levelled her wand at the boy.
To his credit, he barely jumped at the sudden sound of her voice and the orders which were barked at him. He complied after a few seconds, doing exactly as she said and only turning around to face her when she told him to do so.
"Sammi Goldhorn, yeah?" The boy, Joseph DeMagi, she believed he was called, asked.
Sammi raised one of her eyebrows at him. "You'd be right in thinking that's my name. I don't see how that'll help you though, not with what you've been up to, Joseph."
Oh yeah, he was definitely done.
Joseph smiled at her, his hands still raised as he nodded slightly at the book that was between them. "I'm only reading a book about blood magic, it's not like I'm actively doing anything with it. Professor Slughorn gave me a restricted section pass too, if that matters to you, Miss Prefect."
Sammi rolled her eyes. "I'll take a look around to make sure that's true, Joseph. Don't think I'll bend any rules for you on account of being Harry's friend — as highly thought of as we Goldhorn's are, we're a stickler for the rules."
"Joe, if you don't mind," Joseph — Joe, said. "That's all well and good too, but I don't think your older sister's as much of a stickler for them as you think she is. Harry and her mess around with Potter and the Weasley girl pretty often. Prolly know that though, huh?"
"Sarah controls their chaos, she doesn't actively increase it," Sammi promptly bit back at the boy, narrowing her eyes at him; she took notice that he would've been handsome too, had he not been a rule-breaker.
That was all the grounds she needed to disqualify him.
"Fair enough, fair enough. So… if you don't mind my asking while you go about looking for something to get me expelled with, why are you so worried about blood magic? Don't the Greeks still actively practice it?" Joseph asked, eyeing her with a similar look of curiosity that she usually wore.
Well, if she wasn't covering for Sarah, scolding her sisters and friends or otherwise acting a bit more mature than people her age should be; aside from all of those, she generally bore that look.
"Greek law is for Greece and British law is for the British," Sammi responded with a shrug as she dug about a pile of rubble in one corner. "I don't care one way or the other, but I wouldn't mind all the benefits this would get me. Especially not with all the rumours about a blood-magic cult practising in these very halls. You've not been very quiet or secretive."
"I guess that's a way to look at it, and I have been. Really, I haven't told anybody, it's only a few as- gits trying to ruin me before I can get them back," Joe shrugged in a manner that was similar to Sammi, only his conveyed more than indifference. "If you only want benefits and don't care about blood magic in particular, why don't I make you a deal?"
Sammi paused her searching to regard him. "Let's hear it then. It has to be good too, nothing stupid."
Joe grinned at her and nodded. "Nothing stupid, promise."
Sammi rolled her eyes and fought to keep a grin of her own from appearing on her face; it was hard work, appearing so unfriendly and professional. As much fun as Prefect benefits were, especially the bath, she didn't think she'd be taking the position next year. Not unless it turned around for her.
"I'll take your silence to mean I'm good to make my offer," Joe said after a few seconds of silence. "You can keep the book as long as you'd like and if you don't wanna do that, you can take all the notes from it that you'd want. Reckon I could give you some Galleons or dirt on a few other people in my house too so long as they're not too close to me. What'dya say?"
"I say it sounds like you're awfully guilty of messing around with blood magic," Sammi answered, finally allowing the grin to shine through her face. "Sarah told me a little bit about you after we first saw you spend time with Harry. Your family's known for this type of stuff, so I know you probably have a pretty good first-hand knowledge of it. Why don't you show me some of what you know and I can let you off just this on- wait, you have to show me what you've been working on and explain it too. If it's horrible, I'll have to deal with it."
Joe shrugged. "I'll take that deal… remind me not to mess with your sister either. It's scary how much she seems to know about everybody — just like Corene," He nodded over to a table then, making her notice his wand was on it. "As you can see, I can't exactly get up to anything and I haven't been working on anything nefarious like most people think my family does."
"Fewer excuses and more telling what it is that you're doing," Sammi said with her hands on her hips. "Show me where it is too, I'll admit your hiding place was awfully nice."
Just like he had earlier, Joe grinned at her. "I'm good at hiding what I need to, what can I say?" He winked then, making Sammi give him an extra-intimidating look despite the faint blush that came to her face. "You were actually really close to it too, and had you been looking under the rugs for a door instead of runes, you would've found it."
With no further explanation, Joe slid a rug across the floor and lifted up a small hatch that blended in with the rest of the stone that constituted the room's floor. It only opened up a three-meter by three-meter area that went a foot deep, but that was enough to show the intricate carvings he'd been doing.
"Pretty impressive, huh?" Joe asked with a look of pride on his face.
"It's certainly very pretty despite being made out of… well, blood," Sammi said, blinking and flickering her gaze between the runes and Joe. "What's it do and why're you doing it?"
Joe rubbed at the back of his neck like Harry often did. "Well, really, It's just so I can get back at Aster and Reinhard — you know about those two blokes, right?"
Sammi nodded; they were the closest friends of Harry's that fit the billing of bloke.
"Sick," Joe said. "They got me pretty good, so I resorted to cheating by using blood magic. It won't harm them, there's actually no pain involved for anybody but me, and even then that's minimal. As for what this does, this bit of magic and all of these runes together form a complex chain reaction similar to a ward scheme. One rune powers the next which then flows into the next and so on, so long as the activation scenario happens. When everything comes together, provided I drew the runes correctly and didn't chain them together incorrectly as well as a few other variables that're highly fallible, it activates."
Sammi blinked at him a few times in a mixture of wonder and heavy curiosity — she needed to know how to do exactly what he was doing. Giannis would be proud and impressed, especially since her family didn't want her learning until she was already done with her time at Hogwarts.
"What's it do when it activates? Does it let you read their mind while you're here? Control their actions? Teleport their belongings?" Sammi fired off question after question, all the while she walked closer to the boy with her wand still in hand.
Joe grimaced as she got closer, his eyes doing a once over of her figure before they settled back on her eyes. "Uh, this… well — don't suppose I could get out of telling you, huh?"
Sammi shook her head firmly.
After a sigh and awkward looking away from Sammi, Joe said what it did.
"It's meant to make them use the loo a few times a night so they get less sleep."
"That's it?" Sammi asked.
Joe nodded while still looking away, and so when she made an action that surprised even herself, she didn't get to see his reaction to it much to her chagrin.
With her free hand, she took hold of one of his, feeling the bit of alluring roughness it had to it. Next, while he still looked away from her, she used her hand that still had a hold of her wand to turn his face towards her.
"We'll be spending a lot of time together going forward — you're teaching me how to do this."
Joe grinned at her, and so it was.
