Sorry about the long gap in updating.
Kayla age 8
Dom POV
Today was a great day for our family, today was Kayla's 8th birthday. It was also the anniversary of the day our daughter became our daughter Feb 11th. I smiled as I watched Brian and Mia trying to wrangle in all the kids for games and cake.
We had done our best to give Kayla the full birthday experience just like we had the year before.
only this year was different, Kayla was now attending school on a normal basis so she had a whole group of friends to invite over for her birthday.
Finally, at 4 pm the parents began to return, I had never been so happy to watch 15 kids leave. Kayla smiled as she ran up and hugged me. Brian smirked at us as he walked back into the house.
"I sure hope I get one of those hugs baby girl, your classmates wore me out." She giggled as she ran over to Brian throwing her arms around him.
"Happy birthday princess, please stop growing up," I smirked as Brian hugged her tighter.
"No way daddy, it won't be long till you will have to teach me to drive the skyline." He groaned as looked over at me with a smirk.
"Sure I'll teach you to drive but you want to practice in your papa's charger right." She laughed shaking her head as she let go of me.
"So what's my birthday surprise daddy." She asked giving Brian those cute little puppy eyes. Brian had been teasing her for weeks that he had something special planned for her birthday after the party, in reality, I didn't even know what the surprise was about.
"Yeah Bri, you going to clue us in on what you got planned." I asked crossing my arms over my chest. I had been obvious Brian had been planning some sort of family trip. the destination on the other hand was a complete mystery to me.
Brian smirked as he walked over to me laying a soft kiss on my lips. I groaned shaking my head, he smirked at me, whatever it was I wasn't going to enjoy it.
" We are going to take a family vacation, not only is today our princesses birthday but it's the anniversary of us becoming a real family."
"Really daddy" she smiled as she ran wrapping her arms around Brian's waist.
"And just where are we going Bri."
" skying in the Carpathians." Brian smirked as he watched the look of horror on my face.
"Skying in Europe really, couldn't we go to someplace tropical."
"Hold on let's let the princess settle this."Brian smirked kneeling down in front of our daughter. I shook my head as I watched them.
"Baby girl, do you want to see snow for the first time or go someplace tropical."
"I've never seen snow daddy, can we build a snowman." Kayla squealed wrapping her arms tightly around Brian's neck.
"Oh no" I groaned shaking my head, I was outnumbered. Kayla looked so excited, could I really tell her no? I smiled shaking as I walked past Brian and out the door.
"Where are you going, papa?" Kayla asked
"Outside to enjoy the sun, before you too yay who's drag me to the cold." Kayla's giggles made me smile as I walked out the door. Grabbing a beer from the fridge, I sat watching the sunset over the skyline of L.A. I would never tell Brian how secretly excited I was to be spending a week alone with Them.
"Dom get your ass back in here we need to pack." Brian called out the door. I knew Damn well Brian had been packing for days. I had tried to ignore the alarming amount of Amazon boxes that showed up in the past few weeks.
"Just throw some of my boxers in a bag and call it good, I don't have Eskimo clothes." Brian laughed as he turned back inside.
Five hours later I found myself at LAX with a very excited eight-year-old and my husband who really wasn't any better.
Brian had a firm hold of our daughter's hand as I grabbed our tickets from Khios.
"Daddy how long is our flight going to be." Kayla asked looking at me. The last time she had been in a plane was when we made our mad dash from Mexico. A time I would sooner forget.
"Yeah daddy, did you forget to baby girl how long it takes to fly to Europe?"
I don't know didn't look, baby." Brian asked as he looked at me with that innocent smirk
"The hell you didn't Bri." I knew damn well Brian knew exactly how long we would be stuck on that dang plane.
"Ahhh daddy, papa said a bad word."
"Yeah he did didn't he, guess he will have to stop complaining and just suck it up.I purposely got us a red-eye flight that way you could sleep on the plane princess." She nodded as she clutches her stuffed horse.
Our baby was nervous about flying for the first time since Mexico. I honestly was sure how much she even remembered from her last flight. The last thing I was ever going to do was ask her anything about that night.
Getting through security was alright, except I want wanted to deck the TSA agent for making my baby girl cry cause she didn't understand what he wanted her to do.
Brian held her as we waited to board the plane. She had a death grip on him since the TSA agent had yelled at her.
Brian looked at me looking increasingly guilty by the minute, I wanted to poke fun at his choice but I knew he meant well and the last thing I wanted to do was upset kayla anymore than she already was. I was grateful boarding the plane was painless.
"Do you want to sit by the window princess?" Brian asked as he set her down in the aisle.
She shook her head as she grabbed my hand looking scared.
"You take the window, Dom, it will be easier for me to get up with her if she needs to use the bathroom."
Kayla calmed down as we buckled her into the seat, the first class cab had more room so we were able to stretch out a little bit.
"Papa I'm scared." Kayla said as she buried her face into Dom's side as we began to taxi down the runway.
"It's okay princess, thousands of people fly every day." Brian said as he reached over taking her hand.
"Just imagine where in a very fast car hun, just close your eyes and pretend that I'm driving us down a drag strip, do you think your dads would ever let something happen to you." I asked looking down at her.
she shook her head as our plane finally began to pick up speed. "It's just a really fast car baby girl."
"Yeah, but cars are not flying death machines." Kayla said as she peeked her head away from my side to take a glance out the window.
I coughed to try to cover my laugh, flying death machine, this was definitely my child. Blood or not she became more and more like Brian and I every day.
After a moment more the plane was in the air. Kayla's death grip on me began to loosen. I couldn't help but glance at Brian.
"Still think this was a good idea?" I laughed as Brian very carefully flipped me the middle finger as he pretended to rub his face.
I wrapped a blanket around baby girl as she cuddled into my side. The plane had finally smoothed out. A half-hour into the flight Kayla fell asleep as Brian and I were offered a beer.
I looked over at Brian as he relaxed. He seemed overly fascinated with his beer.
"What you thinking about hotshot."
"Nothing really, just nervous about this trip I guess. I want our family to have a great time together.
"Bri, no matter where we are, the three of us will have an amazing time as long as we are together. You worked hard planning this trip for us, it will be amazing I promise.
"Thanks, Dom, so your not mad about the snow part." Brian smirked over at me, he knew Damn well I didn't do cold weather.
"Can't say I'm excited about being cold. But maybe I can think of a plus to getting cold." I smirked as I watch Brian bite his lip then take another drink of his beer.
"Did I tell you that our hotel room has a separate bedroom?" Brian smirked over at me.
"That was what I was hopping. If I have to get cold, you better be warming me up, Buster."
Brian smirked at me as he leanded back in his seat.
" I think I can handle that."
" I'll take that deal."
Brian's POV
I was more than happy to get off that plane. It had been hard to keep Kayla happy for such a long flight. I had never been happier that we had adopted an older child. Having a little one a flight like that would have been tougher. We had switched planes in London. Dom and I couldn't get out of London fast enough after the events that had taken place with shaw. Even with how everything worked over we still did not want to linger.
But finally, we arrived at the Carpathians. It was snowing like I had never seen before.
Kayla was more than fascinated by the snow. We had stopped at an outfitting store before heading to the resort. None of us had clothes good enough for snowy weather.
Despite Dom's dislike of Snow, he was a real trooper the next day as we braved the slopes. Kayla laughed as she watched Dom take a spill on his skys and me on my board.
Little princess had taken to the snow bored like she had been around snow her entire life.
Every time she fell she got right back up and continued back down the bunny slope. It was really more then amazing to watch.
Even the moment when a woman had stopped Kayla to tell her she would pray for her because she had gay dads. I was proud the way my eight-year-old had handled the woman scowling at Dom and me. Kayla smiled at the woman and thanked her, Dom and I bit back our laughter as Kayla told her she would pray for her because her daddy's had taught her that gender does not matter and she knew that God loves her daddy's, but maybe she should pray for herself because God says hate is bad.
All in all our first day had been a success. Kayla crashed out as soon as Dom and I put her to bed. I smiled as I watched our daughter sleep soundly, snow falling heavily outside the window by her bed.
Closing the door softly, I rubbed my hand over my eyes as the day's events started to catch up to me. Not to mention the jet lag.
Dom sat on the sofa beer in hand, unfortunately, corona had not been unavailable but Dom had found something we could live with.
"Princess sleeping?" Dom asked as I sat next to him snagging part of the blanket he had grabbed from the bedroom.
"Yeah, she had a big day."
"Yeah, we all did." Dom smirked as he pulled me closer as turned his attention back to the movie he was watching.
"You know Dom there's a jacuzzi in our room we have yet to try out." I watched with amusement as Dom looked down at me then quickly shut off the TV.
"Sounds like an amazing idea to me."
"I put a few more beers on ice by the jacuzzi" Dom smirked as he leaned down kissing Me softly.
"I love a man that thinks ahead." I laughed as Dom followed me the look in his eyes told me I was his pray and he was on the hunt.
The snow had continued to fall over the next few days. I didn't want to tell Dom just how much I was really over the snow.
"So the lady at the front desk was telling me tonight is supposed to be an amazing meteor shower. Since we can't see stuff like that at home very well with all the light pollution. I was thinking maybe we could take a drive tonight to see them."
"Do you really think that is a wise idea? With all the snow that's been falling?" Dom asked as he returned his skis for the day.
"The lady at the desk says they normally keep the roads pretty clean around here so we shouldn't have an issue."
"I don't know Bri, I wouldn't worry about it so much if it was just the two of us."
"Come on Dom, When did you get old? Are you saying Dom Toretto can't handle driving in a little snow?"
"You're a Brat Brian, if we end up getting stuck you're doing all the pushing." After a quick dinner, the three of us headed out towards the spot the lady at the front desk assured us that would be the best for viewing.
For once on our trip it wasn't snowing, the roads were thankfully pretty clear. Kayla crashed out in the back seat as we made our way to the viewing area. A few other cars had gathered in the same spot, most of them tourists at the same resort as us.
"Guess this was a pretty popular idea." Dom said as shut the lights off.
"Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if that lady told everyone about this." Kayla sat up rubbing her eyes.
"Can we go outside and look at stars Daddy please?"
"Sure as long as it doesn't get too cold." The lady had been right. The stars were amazingly bright but we only spotted a few meteors. After a little while, the wind began to pick up. More clouds began to cover the sky. All of the other cars had left as soon as the wind picked up.
"We should get going Bri, I don't want to be stuck up here if another storm pops up." I nodded as I ushered baby girl back to the car.
The wind really began to whip off the mountains as we began the hike back to our resort. The Snow was blowing so hard that we could hardly see the headlights on the road.
"Bri, this is why I don't do cold weather." Dom said as he gave me a sideways glance.
"We can't be that far from the resort; it was only a 30-minute drive to begin with, Dom watch out." I yelled as a huge pile of snow slammed into us forcing us off the road. I heard baby girl scream as the world momentarily went black.
I woke to Dom frantically shaking me. "I'm fine Dom." I groaned looking in the back seat Kayla had tears running down her face. She looked shaken up but otherwise okay.
Me on the other hand my head was pounding, I must have hit my head on the window as we slid off the road.
"I was able to get through on the phone before you woke from your beauty nap. They're going to try to get someone up here as fast as they can."
I looked around, most of the car was covered in snow. The only way out would be through the back window.
"Do you think we should try to climb out? What if more snow comes down on us and covers that back half of the car." I had never felt claustrophobic but right now the car was begging to feel really small.
"Bri, we don't know how deep that snow is out there. Besides, are we going to be dragging a child out in this freezing weather? I think we are going to half to take our chances in the car."
"Can you get the car to start so we can at least get some heat in here?" I asked as Kayla climbed up in the front seat with us. Thankfully the car had front bench seats so we all fit well in the front.
"I already tried, the engine must be packed full of snow. Besides I can't get outside to check that the tailpipe isn't blocked with snow. The last thing all of us need is to be killed from the exhaust backing up in the car.
Kayla didn't say anything as she buried her face against me. "I want to go home." She cried after a moment.
Dom looked over at me for a moment. We had been in rough spots over the years but nothing like this.
"We will go home as soon as we can. We have to wait for someone to come get us out of here."
Dom said as he rubbed her back trying to calm her.
I met Dom's glance, his eyes held the same worry mine had. We knew it was going to get cold tonight, really cold. Thankfully I had packed a few blankets from the hotel room in the car. But we both knew it would do little to help in such extreme cold.
Dom and I sat close as we could, doing our best to keep Kayla warm. Thankfully she had fallen asleep.
"Dom, I'm sorry," I said looking away from Dom. In that moment I couldn't meet his eyes.
"For what Bri?" Dom asked, looking at me with confusion.
"This whole damn trip was my idea. Going up to see the stars tonight was my idea. If we would have gone somewhere warm as you wanted, this never would have happened." Dom reached over turning my face so I couldn't help but look at him.
"Bri, you couldn't have known this was going to happen. I know you never would have done anything to put me or our daughter at risk." Dom leaned forward as best he could and laid a soft kiss on my lips.
"Still Dom, what if I just got my family killed? I always screw everything up, why would I think this would be anything different."
"Stop it right now Brian, we are going to get out of this. One day when we are sitting warm on a tropical beach we will look back and laugh about this."
"I sure hope you are right Dom."
"I know I'm right, why don't you try to get some sleep? We may need to try to walk tomorrow when it's warmer." I didn't even want to think of the idea of the three of us walking anywhere in the snow.
"You need to rest too Dom."
" I will, I'm going to stay awake and see if I see any lights." As much as I tried to close my eyes I couldn't sleep. I couldn't help but think about what I had said to Dom. What if we didn't make it out of this? I couldn't stop running all the scenarios through my head. What if I lost Dom, what if we lost our daughter? If anyone had to go I prayed it was me.
"You're thinking too hard over there blondie." Dom said, startling me back to reality.
"Sorry." Three hours had passed since Dom had made the SOS call. It felt like it had dropped another 20 degrees in the meantime. Thankfully Kayla was still asleep as it was becoming dangerously cold in the car.
"I tried to get through on my cell again but the call kept dropping." I could hear the frustration in his voice.
"Damn." Dom smirked at me. "Just think once we get back to that hotel after we get Kayla all warmed up, I can get you back in that jacuzzi."
"Do you have to remind me of that with our daughter sitting right here?" Dom laughed as he look back at the car suddenly.
"What is Dom?"
"I thought I saw lights for a minute." I felt a spark of hope. We both watched from the barely exposed rear window.
"Maybe I was seeing things, wishful thinking I guess?" Dom and I both sat in silence.
"Hello" we both jumped as we heard a far-off yell.
"Shit someone did find us." Kayla sat up as Dom managed to squeeze his way into the back seat hitting the glass as hard as he could as he yelled.
"Are we going to get out of here now?" Kayla asked
"Yeah, baby shortly. Dom Moved back to the front as lights began to shine all around the back of the car.
I covered Kayla as best as I could as glass exploded into the car. As the back window was removed, the cold wind rushed into the car. Dom climbed into the back seat again.
" Hand me baby girl, we need to get her out first." I nodded as I helped our daughter climb over the seat.
"I'm scared papa." She tried to fight Dom for a moment as he started to push her through the opening where the back window had been.
Once she was out Dom turned to me. "Come on Brian, you next."
"No Dom, I will follow you out."
"Damn it Brian Don't fight me on this, out now. You and I both know you calm Kayla the most she is freaking out right now. Go, I will be right behind you." I wanted to fight Dom on this, This whole idea was all mine. The look on his face told me to drop it. It took me a moment to squeeze out. Arms grabbed me forcing me the rest of the way out of the car. Seconds later Dom stood next to me. Four large snow plows with overhead lights shined on the big pile of snow that was where the road used to be.
"Thankfully you all are not on a dead-end road, or it would have been days before we reached you instead of hours.
Kayla clung to me as we all got into the warm cab of the truck, dom up front with the driver and Kayla and me in the back.
"Can we go home now daddy?" She asked with tears in her eyes.
"How about we go back to the hotel and get warmed up first and some sleep then I will see about getting us home."
"Can I have some more hot cocoa?" She asked with her big puppy dog eyes.
"Baby girl, you can have anything you want?" I said, hugging her close to me.
"Marshmallows too?"
"Yes, baby marshmallows too" WIth the road to the resort blocked the trip back to the resort took another half hour. As it would figure we had only been about two miles from the town when the avalanche hit us.
An hour later after a warm bath and a huge cup of hot chocolate, baby girl crashed out for the night.
I stood at the door watching her sleep, tonight could have been so much worse. "Come on Bri let's let her sleep." I nodded as I followed him out of the room. Dom caught me by surprise as he pushed me hard against the closed door of our room.
"Tonight wasn't your fault Bri, I never want to hear you talk like that again." I nodded as Dom leaned forward and kissed me.
"Come on it's our turn to get warmed up. Then tomorrow, let's get the hell out of here."
"I couldn't agree more, don't think we will get the deposit back on the car." I laughed as I stripped and stepped into the steaming water of the jacuzzi. I smirked as Dom followed me in.
"No More blaming yourself Bri, it's over as for the car I don't give a damn." I laughed as Dom pulled me onto his lap. I was honestly too tired to do anything but be thankful we all made it out alive. For now, that is all I really needed.
