Chapter TEN - Doofus steps up
Jamie King stood pacing back and forth as he waited for someone to knock on the door. He kept glancing over at his brother and sister and weakly smiling at them. Jennifer was sitting on the couch of what was their prison. She was watching Phillip and hoping that he could pull this off. He was going to try and get behind whoever was going to come through the door and then make a mad dash for any exit he could find. She hated the thought of her older brother having to do something like this. He reassured her he would do anything to keep her and Jamie safe. He wants to help Jennifer, let him. I just pray that he can get out of here. Jennifer thought to herself. She glanced over at him again and he smiled at her. She motioned for him to come over and sit down by her. He wandered over and sat down. He took her hands and said. "Look, Princess, I know what you are going to say. I can do this. Please don't try and talk me out of it. It's gonna work!" He winked at her and then added "Come on….I am the son of the legendary Scarecrow and Mrs. King! I am the brother of the best team the Bureau has now! Some of your instincts and talent had to rub off on me….right?"
Jennifer laughed and fell into his arms. He gave her a hug and kissed her forehead. There was suddenly a knock on the door and Jamie looked at his siblings.
"It's showtime!"
Phillip made his way towards the door and stood behind it. Jamie gave him a look and Phillip nodded. Jamie opened the door and it actually swung open. There was a man standing there. He was wearing a doctor's lab coat. He looked like it was in his sixties. Jamie had a split second thought that he could overpower the guy but decided against it. Stick to the plan Wormbrain. He said to himself.
"Well! It's about damn time that someone came up here! What right do you have to treat us like this? I will have you know that my parents know lots of people in DC and they will not rest until you have all of us back home! And I won't even get into how you have treated my sister! A woman in her condition and you people have nothing for her!"
Jamie went into full King ramble and it took everything Jennifer had not to laugh over it. She never knew he could do it. She watched as the older man walked into the room and got caught up in Jamie's ramble. He never saw Phillip as he darted out. Jamie kept him busy with his tirade which threw off any comprehension of what was really happening. Jennifer sighed as she thought of Phillip and she never got to see his face before he took off. She just winced and closed her eyes. She prayed that he would make it out of there.
Jamie watched Jennifer as she pretended to wince in pain. His brown eyes locked with her hazel ones and for a second he felt she wasn't pretending. She was worried about Phillip. He knew that. If truth be told he was worried about the Doofus just as much as Jennifer was. He was the trained agent…not Phillip. But he wasn't about to leave his partner. He had to let Phillip go.
Jennifer pushed the doctor out of the way and ran towards the bathroom. She slammed the door and really was sick. So much for faking Princess. She laughed to herself. Maybe these kiddos understood that she was a spy and Uncle Phillip was in trouble. Jennifer sat on the floor and there was a knock on the door. The doctor and Jamie came in. The doctor suggested that Jennifer lay down in her bed and rest.
As Jamie King distracted the doctor, Phillip was able to get out of the room. He didn't have time to even look at his sister before slinking out of the door. He hoped that they would be okay. He thought to himself. Come on Phil…they are trained agents they can do this. You have to figure out how to get out of here. Focus Doofus!
He turned his head towards the left and started running down the hallway. He stopped at the end of it and there was a staircase that whirled all the way up and down. He figured that going down the stairs would be better than trying to find an elevator. He pushed himself against the wall as he headed down the stairs. He didn't see anyone which he thought was strange. He knew they had to be watching him. He pushed that thought from his head as he made his way to the first floor. He stopped at the end of the stairs and looked around. He heard some voices coming from his right. He slowly made his way over to the doorway and saw someone sitting at a desk talking on the phone. He didn't stay there to hear what was being said but he did catch a glimpse of the man sitting at the desk. He tried to remember every feature of the older man. It might come in handy later on.
Phillip walked down another halfway and found himself near a kitchen. He heard people bustling all around and he blended in as one of the staff. He made his way to the back door where deliveries were coming and going. No one noticed as he sprinted out of the parking lot and headed down the street.
Phillip felt like he was running for his life. He never looked behind him and prayed that no one was following him. He finally stopped at the corner by a group of trees. He took a few slow deep breaths. He looked around and opened his mouth. He was standing in front of The Bureau! How in the hell did I end up here? Oh my God! We are that close….okay I gotta get in there! I have to get someone to rescue Jennifer and Jamie! Phillip thought to himself. He stumbled up to the front door of the Bureau and opened the door. There was a young girl with blonde hair sitting at the desk. Phillip leaned on the desk and said "I need to see Scarecrow! ASAP! I am Phillip King, his son. Get him here now!"
********** Lee and Amanda Stetson were sitting in their children's little office that once upon a day was theirs. They were pouring over file after file of old cases that might give them a clue as to who was Efrim Beamon's silent partner. Amanda sighed as she looked through another file from their past. She glanced at the case and thought back to the moment in time when Lee pretended to be a burnout. She had never been more worried about him during that time. Lee was talking back to Billy, messing up assignments, drinking heavily. And he even slapped her across the face. She had forgiven him the minute he had done it, but it took him several weeks to get over it. She knew then that Lee Stetson at least cared about her. She smiled thinking back on the memories she had with Lee when she heard him call out to her.
"Earth to Amanda? Are you okay? Did you find something?" Lee glanced at her and briefly smiled, his dimples peeking out ever so slightly. She looked at him and sighed "Oh I am sorry sweetheart. I was just thinking about this case I just read over. It was a scary memory, but turned out to be a nice one."
Lee walked over to her and sat at the corner of the desk. "What moment was that?"
Amanda smiled at him. Her eyes twinkled as she thought of the memory again. "Oh well… it was the one with Brakin. When you pretended to be a burnout."
Lee took her hand and kissed it. Before he could say anything to her there was screaming and yelling coming from downstairs. Lee and Amanda rushed out of the office and headed towards the stairs. Amanda gasped as she saw her oldest son leaning over the desk yelling at the receptionist. Lee flew down the stairs and took Phillip in his arms. Phillip was yelling for Scarecrow. Lee motioned for Amanda and she swung her arm around Phillip's waist. They lead him up to the office. Bonnie called Sam Foster to let him know about Phillip before Amanda could ask her too.
The couple took their son up to the office and helped him sit on the sofa. Amanda went and got Phillip a glass of water. She handed the glass to Phillip and he slowly took a sip. He took a deep breath and looked at his parents.
"We have to go get Jenny and Jamie! They are literally only a few blocks from here!"
