Author's Notes:
The chapter title, "Tech-Anarchy", was suggested by David683920. I want to thank:
Delquea and CatSpeaker for assisting me in describing the Super Collider.
Additionally, chapter 1 has been retconned to take place on Thursday instead of Tuesday. You'll find out why when chapter 3 gets released, though when is something I am sadly not certain of.
Disclaimer:
I do not own "The Loud House" (Duh). It belongs to Nickelodeon and Chris Savino.
Chapter 2: Tech-Anarchy
"So, anyway, Marco and I we're playing dodgeball, yeah? Things were getting hot and it was just down to me and this punk, Russell. It was tense but I managed to beat him and we won the game!" Lynn. Jr said cheerfully, pleased with the results of the outcome. What followed were compliments and praises for winning her dodgeball game. The loud kids were having fun on their way home their home from school as they shared whatever stories they had that they found interesting or funny enough to share.
After hearing Lynn's story, Luan looked at her sisters and brother before asking, "What other stories do you guys wanna share?"
"Well," Lana asked as she placed her hand underneath her chin to come up with something. It didn't take long before she answered, "Earlier, I felt a little gassy, so I did a big fart in class and it stank up the place but somehow nobody knew I did."
"I'm not surprised it was you," Lola commented begrudgingly as she rolled her eyes away from her twin.
"BWAHAHAHAHAHA!" Luan laughed hysterically to the point where she felt pain in her abdomen, "You, you farted that hard in class? Lan's, the heck did you eat?"
"Oh, the usual stuff. Trash, leftover food and for specials, spicy tacos." Lana answered casually as if nothing was erroneous.
As the siblings continued sharing their stories feeling both interested and entertained, it didn't take long for them to notice there was an anomaly. Lisa was gazing out of the window, staring into the passing houses and trees with the palm of her hand supporting her chin but that wasn't what caught their attention. It was the fact she was unusually quiet that afternoon, as she hadn't said much other than telling her mother she had a "nice day" at school.
"Lisa," Lori said, hoping it would spark a conversation, "Are you okay?"
"Oh, me?" Lisa replied as she turned her head towards the source of the question before answering, "Oh, I am okay."
"Then why have you been so quiet?"
"Well," Lisa said as she cocked her head up towards her eldest sibling before lying, "I just don't have any interesting narratives to share. No need to show concern."
Lori wasn't buying it. Based on personal experience with her sisters and friends, she knows that if someone acts unusual, it means there's something wrong with them. She also didn't want to pressure her much out of fear it would make things worse, so she politely asked, "Are you sure? Because if there's something wrong, you can-"
"I said I'm fine!" Lisa responded aggressively, not wanting to go through the conversation even more. Her face slowly devolved into sadness, realizing what she'd just done, "I, I apologize for yelling at you."
"It's okay," Lori replied before she looked away. She knew dang well that something was wrong with her little sister and she just wanted to help. Problem was that Lisa didn't want to be helped.
Oh well. She just hoped it wasn't anything serious.
They continued their journey home in silence until they arrived. The kids grabbed their bags and headed their way in while Luan and Leni were taking Todd out of the trunk. They went their separate ways as some were found waiting in line for the bathroom while others entered their bedrooms.
As expected, Lisa went on her own.
She closed her door and threw her school bag onto the floor with no care in the world. She walked up to her bed and laid down on it as David's words echoed through her mind.
"And why do we need its protection? Protection from what? Nothing is coming to harm us and if anything, I feel more unsafe by that machine due to it possessing a flamethrower." David berated, his tone of voice getting more frustrated as his sentence continued. "In addition, I do not see the usefulness of this machine at all. You claim it's assisted you with the creation of a gravitational singularity, yet you provide no examples, thus we have no reason to believe you. All it possesses is a flamethrower, and a microphone and I'm supposed to value it? I expected more from you, Lisa." before finishing it off calmly.
She hated what David said. Todd was useful, he just didn't get it. Could Lisa blame him? She had nothing to show for it, other than a flamethrower and a microphone. How did these things have any value? If Lisa had been more responsible, she might've received more respect. Might've.
Lisa couldn't understand herself. Why was she obsessed about it? Was it because David is associated with the science community? It made sense as Lisa valued their opinions to the point of using a time machine just to stay on their good side.
Or was it because Lisa still hadn't gotten over her feelings for him?
That also made sense as Lisa took that as a sign they were drifting apart from each other. Then again, haven't they already drifted apart? They've broken up and Lisa hasn't made any attempts to try and get back with someone who's no longer interested in her. God, love is so confusing. It's a miracle Lisa became David's girlfriend and the only reason why was following Lori's love advice and having similar interests.
Realizing it wasn't going anywhere, Lisa decided to shrug it off and focus on fixing something that was broken.
Her precious ego, but how?
Well, David made a robot that brought in good reception, so maybe Lisa should create her own! One that's better, stronger and more versatile! Yeah, that's it!
Optimism filled her mind as Lisa sought to make her new invention. She grabbed her black marker and proudly walked up to the drawing board to get started only to pause, turn around, and reconsider because she had no clue what that robot might be.
1 hour later
After the kids bathed and had their lunch, it was time to do the next activity every child dislikes.
Chores.
Lisa was sitting on the sofa with headphones on and a tablet placed on her lap. To her right laid sheaves of paper stacked neatly containing bills, rent and taxes. Her siblings envied her work, believing it to be easy but that was far from that. Managing these important tasks perfectly all by herself was something she struggled with and Janice wasn't making things easier.
"No, Janice, I did not purchase a new washing machine from Texas." Lisa responded flatly, "I think my account has been hacked again. I'll resolve it later. For now, may you please "reconsider my purchase?""
"Certainty, Lisa. Hold on for one second."
After hearing this, Lisa frustratingly removed her headphones. The bills had yet to be paid due to setbacks and she still didn't have ideas for her robot. Luckily, there was no rush. After all, there was no deadline and her inventions took a while to make anyway. Problem was, that she didn't know when those ideas may come, nor the nature of them. Maybe she'll get some inspiration? From what? She didn't know and for a toddler who loves exploring concepts, she hated not knowing.
Lisa placed her headphones back on, feeling more relaxed from the sweet sound of silence. Huh. Silence? From The Loud House? That's new. At the same time, they needed focus and keeping their mouths shut was one of them. Lisa spoke on the microphone, asking, "So, has it been resolved?"
"Yes, it has, Lisa."
"Excellent, now you may please settle my bills, rent and taxes for me?" Lisa asked nicely, feeling relaxed with the outcome.
"Of course."
As Lisa stared at her tablet making sure things went accordingly, she flinched at the scream coming from upstairs.
"Lana! Can you please come up and clean your pets' poop again?!" Lola yelled.
What followed was a ticked-off Lana exiting the dining room and marching her way upstairs. Even though her anger wasn't directed at her, Lisa still felt frightened by her aurora.
"Oh good, you're finally-"
SLAM*
"Why did you slam the door like that?"
"Why did you have to yell at me like that?!" Lana fired back, causing Lola to recoil. "You're always like that doing chore-day, why?!"
"Because it gets your attention and it's your job to clean up your stupid pet's poop!"
"What did you say about my pets?!" Lana asked angrily, feeling offended by Lola's insult. Just before a fight ensues, Lincoln opens their door.
"What are you two shouting about?" Lincoln asked frantically, trying to get an answer.
"Lola's shouting at me like she always does," Lana responded as she pointed at the wannabe diva.
"Because, again, it's your job to clean up your pet's poop," Lola said as she pointed back.
Lincoln was in a dilemma. On one hand, he wanted to tell Lola off for yelling at her twin. Nobody in The Loud House likes getting yelled at. On the other, he understood it was Lana's responsibility. He had to act fast, out of fear of another useless Sister-Fight-Protocol being activated.
"Lana, go clean your pets' poop," Lincoln commanded.
"What?"
"You heard him," Lola butted in, "Go clean."
"Fine…" Lana begrudgingly muttered as she approached her pet's litter box, not before purposely bumping into her twin's shoulder. Normally that alone would be enough to trigger a rage from Lola but for now, she would let her off the hook for at least doing her job. Next time, though, Lana won't get off so easily.
Lisa overheard the conversation and smiled softly at the results. Just as she was about to relax, she flinched to the sound of something breaking in the kitchen.
"Lynn!" Lucy exclaimed as she removed her arms from the dishwasher, "Dad told you to stop playing with the dishes!"
"I know, I, I, I-" Lynn. Jr responded incoherently whilst trying to pick up the broken plate pieces.
"You're lucky mom and dad went out shopping," Lucy stated while Lynn ignored her. Wanting to support her big sister, she grabbed a piece of cloth, knelt to her sister's height and offered, "Here, use this. Might cut yourself."
"Thanks, Luce." Lynn. Jr responded with a soft smile as she took the cloth and continued cleaning. Hopefully, her parents don't recognize one absent plate or the shattered pieces in the bin. Silence filled The Loud House once again and Lisa looked impatiently at her tablet, hoping her chore was done.
It wasn't.
"Dang it, Janice," Lisa muttered to herself. She'll have to wait until she can go to her lab; at least, what remains of it. Despite the silence, Lisa was certain another scenario may occur.
SNAP*
It came from upstairs.
'Why am I not surprised?' Lisa thought to herself.
"Luna!" Luan exclaimed, looking angrily at her punk-rock sister, "This is why I told you to stop playing with the broom!"
"Sorry, dude," Luna replied sheepishly as she held two pieces of the broom.
Luan facepalmed, ignoring the apology as she flatly said, "I'll get the duct tape." before turning around and making her way to the basement.
Lisa felt nervous about the current situation. She understood that, despite their ignorance, Lynn. Jr and Luna didn't mean to cause mishaps and could respect Lana for getting her chore done without rebellion. However, that's not what she was worried about. She's worried about one of them getting too disgruntled. She remembers Lincoln going on strike so he could trade chores with his sisters, only to be declined because it would cause disputes and "disrupt the flow", whatever that "flow" is.
It got too out of hand, as Lincoln's lack of care caused the house to turn into a dump and it's a miracle nobody died or got sick from it. To be fair, the sisters weren't any better and you could also blame their parents for allowing it but that's besides the point. The point was that these disruptions, that added irony to Lori's "arguments", would eventually cause another incident like Lincoln's to happen again. Speaking of Lori, where was she? She would step in if something goes wrong since she was in charge. Probably on her phone talking to Bobby.
Whatever.
Lisa didn't need her help. Besides, she had other ideas. Lisa was not going to debate on which chore should be done by someone and she's not gonna go on strike, believing neither would be good enough. It had to be something else. Something technological and esoteric to these first-world problems. Lisa had to stop and think. What was causing these disputes or at least, associated with them?
Human emotions and incompetence.
What if Lisa stripped those away?
Finally, she had an idea of what robot to make. She checked her tablet and voila! Everything's been settled. A smile formed on her mouth before she hopped off her sofa and ran to the backyard, giggling in excitement.
8 hours later
"And done!" Lisa proudly said to herself as she wiped the sweat off her forehead. She placed her screwdriver in her work apron as she gazed upon her newest invention.
The robot, unlike Lisa's other ones, was distinct in its design. It had a human-like appearance with white skin all over. It bore the same height and size as its creator, including its nose and mouth, except for its eyes. It didn't wear glasses but it still had the big, saucer-like eye structure as Lisa's. It had red hair with a center braid hairstyle, brown cargo pants, black sneakers and a leather jacket.
Ah, the leather jacket. One where Lisa had fond memories. Memories of her being praised and respected by her whole school for being the "coolest kid ever". It was the best self-ego-boosting moment of her life. It sucks she gave up on it, though. Love and fame were great, but Lisa still had her morals and wasn't going to neglect toddlers getting sick over arrogance. However, who said she had to pick being cool or nerdy? It's not like it's a one-way decision. Then again, being cool and nerdy would come off as an anomaly to the school and she wasn't sure if it would be accepted or not.
Oh well.
Memories aside, Lisa walked up to her laptop, which rested on a table, and next to it was a plate Lori had provided earlier. Attached to the device was a cable connected to the plug socket of her robot. She sat on her chair in front of her device, fatigued with bags underneath her eyes. The coding was almost done and she had one thing left to do.
Naming it, but what kind of name?
Lisa wasn't sure. It's a task sounding so simple, yet more tedious than one could imagine. She could easily call it, "Chorebot 1000", "Workbot 1000", or anything similar and call it a day, but Lisa didn't want that. She wanted a different name. One that's shorter to pronounce, distinct and memorable.
Maybe Linx? No, Lisa wasn't fond of it. It must be something else. How about Lima? Yeah, that could work. It's a code word used by the military and special forces to describe the letter "L" among their units. Lisa typed the 4 letters on her computer before pressing "ENTER", knowing her work was finally over. She laid back on her chair, stretching herself before looking surprised at the time.
It's 11:30 P.M.
That wasn't good. It was a school night and she stayed up far longer than expected. Guess she lost track of time. Luckily, her lab which was adjoined to her bunker had its living quarters, like a bathroom and a makeshift bed. Lisa was prepared for the circumstances for this to happen and was surprised that her family hadn't come to check on her. Maybe they were used to Lisa staying in her bunker since it was safe there? Who knows and the toddler didn't care enough to find out. She felt damp in her clothes and knew it was time to shower.
Just before Lisa stripped, she paused when she took a good look at her lab.
The walls and floors once filled with tens of her inventions were replaced with emptiness. The space and the sound of silence sent a subtle, yet cold reminder of the price she had to pay as memories filled her mind.
"Lisa, what did you do this time?!"
"The level of damage is immeasurable! Lisa Marie Loud, I hereby declare you banned from the Royal Woods Science Constitution!"
"Lisa, I can't keep doing this. After what happened, I can no longer work with you. I… Excuse me, I need to use the restroom!"
Even after months, she still hasn't gotten over the guilt and sorrow. She's more used to it than before as she's been into her bunker for quite some time, but the reminders weren't helping. Now, if being in the bunker bothered her that much, she could easily do her experiments and projects in her room. However, there's only so much Lisa can do with limited space, constant noises and lack of privacy. Besides, how else can Lisa work on her massive invention in a small bedroom?
Speaking of which, the child prodigy turned more to her left and saw it crystal clear. It was a large Super Collider that appeared to be incomplete based on its exposed wire, leftover tools and various missing parts. Underneath was a concrete base to enable support of its weight and the machine itself was made of metal, with steel flats on top. It was in the shape of a doughnut, with its exterior possessing a mini-staircase that led to a walkway around the machine and in the middle was the main control unit.
All of it was housed in the toddler's bunker and nobody, not even her family, were wiser.
A warm smile crept upon the 4-year-old. She adored that machine, to the point where she had no motivation to work on anything else other than her robot. It wasn't just her hardest and most ambitious project yet, it also helped Lisa forget her bad memories as a coping mechanism. It's a shame she wasn't able to show it. Maybe there's a next time, who knows? For now, the little scientist needed some sleep. She made her way to the bathroom, showered, dried, made decent and slept on her makeshift bed, hoping tomorrow would be a good day.
The next day
Unfortunately for the toddler, it wasn't her morning. She woke up tired and couldn't think clearly. She bathed and got dressed in her bathroom before entering the house. Lisa never informed her family about the bunker's bathroom to avoid it getting flocked by her sisters and to conceal her secret. It was selfish and hypocritical, really, given that Lisa didn't approve of her parents keeping their bathroom a secret.
When she had breakfast with them, they noticed she was drowsy but Lisa assured them she was "okay" and when she arrived at school, things didn't get any better. Lisa was teased by her classmates about yesterday but they were easy to ignore. She didn't talk much with Darcy, other than a few "Hi's" and "Byes" and neither David nor Lisa wanted to look at each other. Due to her drowsiness, Lisa struggled to focus in class or her experiments and she silently cursed herself for staying up so late. Thankfully, she was refreshed after her scheduled nap time and was back to the neutral, toddler genius Lisa.
She didn't hurry her way out of school when it ended like yesterday as she was more relaxed and chatted with her siblings more. They shared funny stories, like Luan getting detention for pranking her teacher with a whoopee cushion or Lincoln's class finding out someone left their lunch box on their table. When they opened it, they were greeted with a foul stench emanating from marinated meat that was trapped in there for God knows how long. It was eventually thrown away and Lincoln never knew where it came from. Regardless, Lisa couldn't wait to come home, eager to show them her invention that would change their lives. She may have had a bad start but she wasn't going to let that ruin anything.
Once they arrived, Lisa grabbed her backpack and ran to the backyard, confusing her siblings.
"What's gotten into her?" Lynn. Jr asked as she cocked her eyebrow, focusing on the toddler that was still running.
"Dunno, never seen her like that before," Lincoln answered with uncertainty. He looked away from Lisa as he grabbed his backpack from the vehicle and said, "Anyway, we should get going now." before heading off to the front door whilst followed by his sisters like a mother of ducklings.
The kids walked upstairs and lined up outside the bathroom to get showered. Some were neutral, others were still not used to waiting tens of minutes just to use a toilet. It didn't take long until they heard someone calling them out in the living room.
"Family unit, please come to the living room. I have something that may catch your interest." Lisa called out, only for nobody to arrive making her feel sour. Was it surprising, though? They weren't going to risk getting their spots stolen or take authority from someone who's 4-years-old.
Or would they?
Lisa groaned in annoyance as she pulled a microphone out of nowhere and yelled, "FAMILY UNIT, PLEASE COME TO THE LIVING ROOM NOW!". Moments later, everyone flocked to the sofa except Leni who was presumably in the bathroom.
"This better be good," Lola begrudgingly muttered. In front was a vertical thing covered in a blanket with legs sticking out at the bottom. Lola wasn't certain what it specifically was but knew it was another of Lisa's inventions, something she was nervous about.
"Oh, it will, elder sibling," Lisa responded, then proudly said, "Now, as you may know, this family-"
"Just get on with it, dude." Luna rudely interrupted, earning an annoyed glare from the toddler.
"If you let me finish, dear sister, I will "get on with it, dude,"" Lisa responded irritatingly, ending her sentence with a mocking tone. She resumed her presentation, "Anyway, this family has been doing a task that most humans are required to do: chores. It can cause disruptions amongst the family," Lisa added, giving Lori a slight glare, "consume time and energy that would've otherwise been used for personal entertainment and can affect budgeting and management of items required to perform these tasks, like washing liquid or brooms." The child prodigy said whilst she looked at Luna when she mentioned brooms, "Which is why I, Lisa Loud, have created a machine to circumvent this first world problem, called," Lisa started before she removed the blanket, "Lima! Lima can clean our restroom, remove unwanted particles like dust, clean fecal matter, mop the floor and much more. Do you have any questions?"
The reactions Lisa received were mixed. Luan, Lana and Lily looked enthusiastic, while Lori, Luna, and Lynn. Jr, Lincoln, and Lola were skeptical. Their parents weren't any better and Lucy? Not even Lisa could understand what she was thinking.
"Lisa, I don't think this is a good idea," Lori stated, despite knowing what she said wasn't a question.
"What do you mean?"
"Don't get me wrong, I understand you're trying to help but how do we know it won't cause problems?" The 17-year-old asked with concern, remembering the bad times she had with Lisa's other inventions. Like those lie-detecting cameras which spread frustration amongst the family or the robotic waitress arms which embarrassed the poor teenager.
Lisa opened her mouth to try and answer, only for nothing to come out because, truth was, she wasn't sure. She got so excited that she forgot to test her invention BEFORE presenting it to her family and now it's too late to solve it. You'd think she would learn her lesson after yesterday but I guess some people just don't learn. Luckily, Lisa managed to answer Lori's question whilst keeping her error in vain.
"Eldest sibling, despite my history, Lima has been coded to be of proper functionality, along with various tools to assist in its tasks." The child-genius replied as she pulled out a remote and pressed the "ON" button.
"Hello, I am Lima. Pleased to meet you." Lima introduced itself. Lisa then pressed a few more buttons, causing Lima's right arm to reconfigure itself into a mop and its left arm into a wrench.
"See?" Lisa quipped, "Perfectly equipped. Do not worry about the constant usage of manual control as Lima's designed to work on its own. This is just a demonstration."
"So, it can clean up toilets and my pet's poop?" Lana asked.
"Yes, it can."
"Aw," Lana complained, "I liked cleaning toilets." The tomboy then turned towards her twin, "But if it cleans up my pet's poop, I'll be okay with it."
"Why?" Lola asked with curiosity. That's odd, thought Lana liked getting dirty?
Lana smirked as she folded her arms, "Because then I won't have to get yelled at."
"Shut it."
"You shut it."
"Kids!" Rita exclaimed, defusing a potential fight.
"Well, what's Lima like? Is it friendly?" Lincoln asked.
"No, elder brother. Lima is designed to be completely neutral and accomplish its tasks no matter what. It is also designed to not adapt to its environment to avoid unintended mishaps and calculations but instead, stay completely grounded to its programming."
"And you're sure it'll do exactly that without going haywire?"
"I am quite confident of that."
"Quite confident?" Lincoln parroted as he slightly raised his voice and eyebrow, showing skepticism towards Lisa's word usage.
"Yes, absolutely," Lisa responded with a hint of frustration, getting tired of arguing with her brother. The kids looked and discussed with each other, considering Lisa's answer. They seemed to be on the verge of accepting Lima until one of them said something.
"I don't think we should allow it," Lynn. Jr argued as she hopped off the sofa and stood in front of her family, "Guys, are we just going to forget the trash monster Lisa made? Or her disgusting poop samples? We don't need a machine to do all the work, we can easily do it ourselves!" before finishing, unaware the scientist was glaring at her irony.
"I would let Lima do my chores," Lucy assured, "It gives me more time to work on my poems."
"And let's not forget those gloweos Lisa made. Without em', we would've been LOST in the dark! Get it?" Luan joked, receiving annoyed groans. She continued, in a more serious manner, "But seriously, it was helpful. Especially with her sibling match-making machine."
"Or that snow plough that cleared out the snow," Lana commented.
"What I'm trying to say is, Lisa may have messed up but there are times where her things were genuinely helpful. So, I'd say we cut Lisa some slack and give Lima a chance." Luan continued, hoping her little speech worked.
"Liwa!" Lily cheered, bringing a smile to the comedian's face. Lisa's as well as she was glad her sisters were defending her. It was exactly what she needed and the relaxed facial expressions of the others gave the toddler happiness. Things were going her way until,
"Oh, really?" Lynn. Jr protested, her voice raising the more she spoke, "So, it no longer matters that Lisa did those things. Or the fact she hid cameras in the bathroom. Or that she does her stupid tests on us when we're sleeping! Or-"
"Enough!" Rita yelled angrily as she stood up, bringing everyone to her attention, "I don't want to hear any more arguing! As the woman of this house, Lima is going to do all our chores and as long as it gets them done without chaos, it's staying! Understand?!"
"Yes, mom." The kids replied.
Lucy turned her head towards her athletic sister with a smirk, commenting, "At least it'll get those dishes done."
"Shut up." Lynn. Jr muttered before turning to Lima, "And I'm watching you."
Before the family left to do their occasional activities, Leni came downstairs wrapped in her towel. "Sorry for being late, I was busy washing my hair and-" before gasping at what she saw in front of her, "Why are there two Lisas?!"
"This is not "Lisa", Leni." Lisa answered flatly, "May someone please explain this to her?"
"I'll do it," Lori said as she walked over to Leni. As the two teenagers walked away, the rest of the kids went on. Unfortunately, those like Lynn. Jr or Luna were still skeptical about allowing Lima to do their chores but at this point, it was either accept Lima or get yelled at by their mother. They chose the former. Besides, the others still had faith in Lisa.
What could go wrong?
30 minutes later
"EVERYTHING WENT WRONG!" All of Lisa's siblings except Lily yelled at her. Lincoln started, "It's taken away everything, Lisa! The fridge, our beds, the carpets, literally everything!"
"It even took away Edwin," Lucy interjected.
"And you just let that happen?" Lola irked, only to regret it when Lucy gave the young diva a death stare.
"You try getting something back from a robot and see how that goes." Lucy sternly stated as she pulled up her right sleeve, revealing a bruise.
"And it took Mr Coconuts away, too!" Luan yelled, who looked like she was about to blow a fuse.
"See, see? Told you it was a bad idea!" Lynn. Jr exclaimed, feeling glad that her point was proven for once.
"We get in, Lynn," Lori replied begrudgingly as she folded her arms, feeling irritated at her younger sister's attitude.
Lisa looked at her siblings in shock. The toddler knows she shouldn't be surprised this happened but right now, she just can't bring herself to that. All she wanted was to help her family and feel good about herself. Why was that too much to ask? Then again, ask who? She's got nobody to blame but herself for this. She then noticed Lynn. Jr had a black eye and asked, "What happened to you?"
"Whilst it was stealing my sports equipment, I tried to hit it with my baseball bat. Didn't work out as I planned." Lynn. Jr answered, covering her injured eye.
"Do you know where Lima is?"
"I last saw it downstairs. You've got to stop it, Lisa!" Lana insisted.
Without answering, Lisa ran out of her room and raced down the staircase, making her way into the living room. From there, she noticed that the sofa, table and television were gone. Where could they be? She didn't know and didn't have time to find out as she saw Lima carrying Cliff the Cat and Charles the Bulldog by the necks on its right arm whilst heading out to the front door.
"LIMA!" Lisa screeched at the top of her lungs, "WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING?!"
Lima turned around to see its creator furious. Despite her expression, it replied in a calm, unfazed manner, "I am doing the chores, Lisa. Like you programmed me to."
Lisa's right eye twitched, "MY CODING DID NOT TELL YOU TO THROW AWAY OUR ANIMALS!"
"But Lisa, your programming told me to complete my tasks no matter what and to ensure that no chore would ever have to get done again in this residence." Lima replied casually as if nothing was wrong. Lisa's anger subsided and was now dumbfounded with a loss of words. She wanted to continue feeling angry at Lima, knowing it didn't deserve it but no matter how hard she tried, finding any shred of genuine anger was like finding a needle in a haystack. She wanted to know what Lima meant by, "no chore would have to get done again". She turned around as she felt like being watched, only to see her siblings staring at the scene. Some were shocked, while others looked confused at Lisa's sudden calmness.
"What are you doing? Keep yelling at it!" Lana commanded, not wanting to tolerate the sudden act of politeness.
"Do not get involved." Lisa flatly replied, not wanting to deal with her sister, either.
Lana's eyes burrowed and frowned as she tried to comprehend what Lisa said. She had the nerve to say this after what Lima was doing to her pets. She wasn't going to let this slide. Nuh-uh. The tomboy retorted, "Don't get involved? Don't get involved?!" Lana then angrily walked down the stairs, her hands clenched into fists as she shouted, "Hey, I defended you earlier because I believed in you and look what's happened! We lost everything, it's about to throw away Cliff and Charles and you're telling me to not get involved?!"
Lisa was getting scared and regretted what she said. She looked at Lana with fear as she slowly walked back, her palms facing the disgruntled blonde as she pleaded, "Lana, I am sorry! Just, please-" but it was too late. As much as Lana didn't want to hurt her little sister, combined with the crowd behind begging her not to, the anger within was just too much. She recoiled back with her arm while Lisa closed her eyes and shielded herself to prepare for the worst, only for nothing to happen.
Huh? What transpired? Did one of her siblings stop her in time or did Lana reconsider at the last second? Lisa opened her eyes and lowered her arms from her face to further understand the situation. It was neither of the two.
Instead, Lana's fist was blocked by a robotic arm as Lima firmly stated, "Do not harm my creator." before pushing back the tomboy, causing her to tumble and lose her balance for a bit before regaining her posture. Knowing its strength and most likely won't feel pain, Lana took the message before she had to figure it out the hard way. Lisa felt something lit within her. A sense of acceptance and it was to… Lima? The one who messed up her house and almost committed animal abuse? Why? Was it because it protected her? I mean, I guess so. It's not like anyone else came to Lisa's aid anyway. Speaking of which, Lisa looked at Lima wanting to continue her previously disrupted conversation, asking, "What did you mean earlier?"
"About what?
"About how "no chore would ever have to get done again". Elaborate on that."
"Lisa, what I mean is that should I remove all the furniture and items that are associated with performing the chores, then there would be no need to do them. It is why I am taking these domestic animals away as they are the cause of throwing away their excrement or why I threw away the fridge as having one requires cleaning it up regularly." Lima responded, completely ignoring the snarls the two pets were giving.
Lisa wasn't sure what to think about its response. She expected it to be long and complex given its actions, yet it was so short, so simple, but it just made sense. It explained why it committed these actions and Lisa wasn't sure if it was before or after it did its chores. Regardless, it didn't matter. Anyone with morals would know doing all of that is wrong but not for Lima as it was just a machine. It doesn't possess morals, it doesn't have a mind, it doesn't think about its actions, nor care how it would affect others, it just follows what it's programmed to do and tries to execute it in the best way it can think of. Even if it's morally questionable and Lisa only had herself to blame for all this. It was a hard thing to accept, given the level of disruption within the premise but Lisa can feel bad about it later.
She had to do the right thing.
Lisa looked at her creation in disappointment, uttering, "Lima, I will deal with you later. Right now, you must go offline." before pressing the power button as the machine slowly powered down. Cliff and Charles easily escaped thanks to Lima's loss of grip.
Now that the worst was over, Lisa looked outside her yard to see various furniture and essentials piled up. Lima did all this in 30 minutes? It must've been quick, exactly how the scientist designed it. Shame it heavily backfired, though. When she turned around, all of her siblings except Lily stared at her with death in their eyes. Then,
DOOR OPENS*
"Is it over?" Lynn. Sr asked nervously with a bucket on his head whilst holding a frying pan.
"It is, dad," Luan replied unsympathetically, not taking her eyes off of Lisa.
"Oh, thank God." Lynn. Sr with relief as he and his wife exited their bedroom. "Now," he sternly, glaring at Lisa along with Rita.
All the young toddler could do was provide a sheepish smile.
Things didn't go so well for poor Lisa. She received a scolding from hell and was grounded in her room for 1 week while the rest, except Lily, grabbed their items and placed them back to where they were, though some were damaged. Lisa agreed to pay for the damages using the money she earned from selling her inventions and funding but it wasn't enough to change their hostile opinions of her. They did however let her shower, go last, and provided lunch but not the typical "eat with the family" way. When Lisa ate at the dinner table, things were quiet. Too quiet. Whenever Lisa asked a question, they either wouldn't acknowledge it or provide a short answer, with little info. She eventually stopped, realizing it wasn't going anywhere. Once lunch was done, most of them went back to their usual activities, except for Lisa who was still in her room and had her experiments and other lab equipment temporarily taken away. She did her occasional tutoring, though let's just say the atmosphere there was more tense than the Marianas Trench.
Then late at night, all of the loud kids were in their rooms preparing for bedtime. Though, because tomorrow would be a Saturday, most of them stayed up late except for Lisa. As mentioned before, she valued her REM sleep a lot to preserve her brain functionality but on that night, she found herself struggling to take her occasional nap. She tossed and turned, trying to ignore the negative thoughts in her mind but found herself defeated every time she tried. Maybe she was tired but that didn't make them go. Eventually, she gave in as she sat on the bed, and thought about the events that transpired.
About how she made Darcy upset. About the things Lynn. Jr said. About how she let everyone in her family down. About how she had nobody to blame but herself for all of this.
The more the toddler thought about it, the more she felt the urge to cry. She immediately backpedaled, wanting to think happy thoughts but it was too late as Lisa took her glasses off and wiped her teary eyes with her sleeve. She then placed her blanket on her face to muffle out the noise as she began crying. Lisa recalls telling Lincoln that things were solved when he left the house. Now, she was taking his turn to feel that way. The feeling of being a black sheep, a curse, a failure in the family who does nothing but make everything worse, just like what she did at school or home.
"Darcy… Everyone, forgive me. Please. I'm so sorry." Lisa cried, wiping her tears.
The toddler never shared this with anyone but there were moments where she wondered what things would be like if she didn't have her intelligence and instead, was your everyday toddler, purely out of curiosity. Now, it was more personal. If she didn't have her intelligence, she wouldn't have made Lima or any other bad incident that occurred which involved science. Sure, she wouldn't be able to cure her classmates with strep throat but it wasn't her obligation. Besides, their parents would have sent them to the clinic for treatment.
When the crying toddler was finally done, she removed the blanket from her face, and made an ultimatum. When she gets her things back, she's going to create a pill or substance that would completely erase her high IQ. She didn't care if people protested, she didn't care about the things she might miss out on and she didn't care if people missed the neutral, toddler genius because all she wanted was to escape her pain and saw her intelligence as the cause of it.
"Liza!"
Lisa shot her head towards the source of the noise. Who could it be?
Oh. It's Lily, looking sad at her big sister's misery. Lisa gasped at this before she wiped her face, placed her glasses on and walked toward the baby.
"Lily, I am okay. Do not worry about me." Lisa reassured, forcing a smile upon her tear-stained face.
Lily shook her head, indicating she wasn't buying it. Lisa pouted a little but wasn't surprised. The baby girl reached her arms out and Lisa picked her up. She then slowly sat on her bed and placed Lily on her lap.
"Okay, Lily. What's wrong?" Lisa asked, getting straight to the chase.
Lily responded by making a few grunts and hand gestures as if she were trying to tell something. Lisa understood what they meant before responding, "You're upset that I am not happy?"
Lily nodded. Lisa sighed and looked away, not wanting to vent about her feelings toward a baby but at the same time, went along with it. There wasn't anyone else who was up for it and Lily had an above-average cognitive function, making it easier for her to understand her siblings. How else would she get involved in their shenanigans? Lisa then looked back at Lily with her pathetic face and asked, "Lily, how can I be happy in a time like this? Everyone has given up on me and I've caused nothing but mayhem. I am done being intelligent, which is why I plan to get rid of it."
Lily gasped in horror before making some more gestures, earning a puzzled look.
"You, you have not given up on me? Why? I do not understand. I have provided no merit to anyone, at least lately. Even," Lisa sniffled, "Even the ones who defended me have given up."
Lily responded by making grunts and gestures, which translates to, "Lisa, everyone in my family is special but nobody is as special as you. You've made wonderful things and tried to help, even when people doubted you. When I cry, get hurt or want to play, you're there for me. The Lisa I know would never give up, no matter how much heat she'd get or how often her experiments failed. So please, don't get rid of your smarts because I would hate to lose the big sister I've always loved."
Lisa was at a loss for words, her mouth gaping open at what she just heard. The toddler felt herself tearing up again, not by sadness but by realizing just how much she meant to her baby sister. This time, she didn't hold back as she let it out whilst embracing her.
"Lily," Lisa said before sniffling, "I, I am so sorry. I shouldn't have been so selfish. You're right, you would hate to lose me and… It would break my heart to see you feel that way, too."
Once the embracement was over, Lisa walked back to the crib, only to get a protesting Lily. Lisa was confused. Why didn't she want to sleep in her crib? Unless…
"Are you saying you want to sleep with me?"
Lily nodded. Lisa gave a relaxed smile and towards her bed where she laid Lily down on the left side and Lisa lay on the other. She pulled her soaking wet blanket to their bodies and rested peacefully.
"Good night, Lily."
"Night, Liza!"
The duo closed their eyes, trying to get some sleep. All of Lisa's sorrow and worries were replaced with happiness and care, not just for being comforted but for learning how much she meant to Lily. As the two tried to sleep, Lisa now had a clearer mind to come up with a plan.
A plan to fix everything.
