Flight of the Demigods

Emily strode over to her desk and dropped her bag on the ground. As usual, Mark Maner was there before her.

'Beat you. Again.' He smirked.

'Uh, no. I let you get here first,' said Emily, pulling out her chair.

'Or maybe you're just always late, Tortoise,'

'For someone called Maner you don't have too many manners, do you?' But she was smiling. Mark had been her best friends since… well, forever. She couldn't be mad at him.

The teacher entered.

'Right kids. Roll call. Almeida, Emily?'

'Present,'

'Joy, Melina?'

'Present,' she yawned. She seemed the polar opposite of joy.

'Maner, Mark?'

'Present,'

It went on.

English class. Emily pulled open her bag and the first thing she saw was her bright orange T-shirt from camp. She was going there just after today, the last day of school. So now was English 'goodbye' class.

Mark must have seen it too, because he asked, 'Emily, why do you have a T-shirt that says "Blood"?' Then he just kept asking.

'Why do you carry a pen you never use? What is written on it? Ain't nothing like I've ever seen before. And how are you so good at mythology?'

She explained everything away. The pen was empty and unfillable, her little sister drew on it, she read lots of mythology.

'And why is the floor trem…bling?'

'Bathroom!' Emily zapped out of the classroom like electricity.

She crept down the corridor towards the shuddering corner.

'Emily?'

She whirled around. 'Mark! You should not be here!'

'That's not the way to the bathroom.'

'Gods of Olympus, dude! Get back to the class!'

'Gods of Olympus? Emily, no – look out!'

A gryphon rounded the corner. Roaring, it thundered towards the pair. Melina darted out of the classroom holding a golden sword.

'Melina, you – what the heck, man!'

Because the two girls ran towards the gryphon. Emily uncapped her pen.

'Hey wait you-'

Her pen sprang into a full-size bronze sword.

She slashed at the gryphon. Melina disappeared in shadows and reappeared above its head.

Both the girls impaled the gryphon. It collapsed into dust.

'Mark, come on. It's not safe here for you!'

'Wait, don't you mean not safe for us? Everyone in the class?'

'No, they'll be fine. It's you. You're special,'

'Special?'

'I'll explain on the way,' said Emily, dragging him by the tie to the door, slashing through more gryphons with Melina.
