Prompt 5: Goodbye

Goodbye and Hello

Carefully dropping a box onto the floor, Korra had a blank face. She wasn't amused, to say the least, and so far, she found three reasons why she wanted to go back home. One being the ridiculous amount of people in the city, two, how slow everyone drove, and three, the lack of nature. She was already homesick despite having just gotten here.

"Korra honey, can you help me with this box? It's too heavy." Her mom calls out from the back of their truck.

She responded after dropping a box near the porch. "Coming."

With a quick glance at her neighbor's house, Korra sighs before helping her mom. They both lifted one side of the box before shuffling it over into the house. They set it down on the kitchen countertop before standing there in silence. Sure enough, Senna looks up at her daughter with a frown.

"Sweetie, I know you miss Alaska but this is good for us. Your father finally got his dream job."

Groaning at the same talk she's heard for months, Korra rolled her eyes. "I know I know," she said with an annoyed pout while looking at the ground. "It doesn't mean I can't mope around about it though."

"Korra…"

"I'm fine. Really mom. I just… need some time."

Her mom didn't seem happy with that response. Shortly enough, Korra had enough and walked back outside.

"I'm gonna get the rest of the stuff."

She made her way out and once outside, she fished out her phone and earbuds from her pocket. She quickly put them on before playing some music. The tunes drowned out the deafening silence that she wasn't used to. Back in Alaska, back where she lived, it had been a small community where they resided so it was always rowdy and loud with the kids.

Compared to here… an overly populated city where she knew no one, it wasn't pleasant. She was actually grateful that they lived on the outer side of town, away from the strangers. It comforted her in a way but at the same time, made her uneasy from the peace and quiet. There was no winning, to be honest.

Korra climbs their truck's tire before bending over to grab a box. She shivered at the breeze that blew in from beneath her shirt and right when she grabbed a box, she looked head to make eye contact with a stranger. A stranger who she presumed to be her neighbor and a stranger that twitched before smiling courtesy.

So of course, Korra smiled back to be polite. She quickly hopped down from the truck after that but to her luck, her shirt had been caught on some metal fringe meaning, it totally ripped when she landed on the ground.

"Shit."

Groaning out loud, Korra walked over to put the box on the front hood.

"This was my favorite shirt to…"

She assessed her damage with a frown before looking by chance again. She makes eye contact with her neighbor again, but this time, she looked somewhat flustered. Korra cocked an eyebrow in curiosity before watching the gal, who seemed to be around her age, give her an awkward smile before running inside.

"Hmm… that was weird…"

Korra looks down at her shirt again before sighing.

"This bites."

When she finally lugged the box inside, her mother gasped at the sight of her baby.

"Young lady, what happened? Why are you dressed like that? Your stomach is exposed!"

Korra looks down at her stomach and well-earned and defined muscles before snarking back. "I never would have guessed."

"Korra!"

She shrugged it off. "My shirt got caught on the truck, what do you want me to do?"

"Get changed, that's what young lady! You can't go around flashing our neighborhood like that!"

"Yeah yeah, will do." Korra sets the box down in the living room before heading up to her room. She thought back to her neighbor, recalling her flustered face, before smiling softly. "She was cute."

Her parents' laughter caught Korra's attention the moment she walked downstairs. She noticed someone was at the door though she didn't recognize them. Her question was quickly answered when her dad spotted her though.

"Korra, come here. Say hello to our neighbors."

Letting out a small huff, Korra quickly descended the stairs before making eye contact with a familiar face. "Ah… she's from…"

Once by her parents' side, Tonraq gestured toward his daughter, "This is my daughter, Korra. Korra, these are our new neighbors, Hiroshi and his wife Yasuko and their daughter, Asami."

So her name is Asami. Korra thought before looking at the three. She quickly gave them a friendly smile before greeting, "Hello, nice to meet you all."

"The pleasure is ours!" The man she presumed to be Hiroshi spoke, "Our daughter is just a year older than you but I hope you two can become good friends."

She smiled forcibly, "No promises but we'll try."

"Korra!" Her mom smacked her arm, getting her to whine.

"Ow mommmm."

Asami's parents laughed while Asami giggled. Once her laughter died down, she finally raised her hand to offer a shake.

"Nice to meet you Korra, I'm Asami."

Korra looked at her hand before grabbing it and giving her a firm shake. "Pleasure is mine." So her eyes were green.

There was this weird spark, or rather literal static shock when they touched, which prompted them to quickly let go with a unanimous 'ow' causing their parents to giggle. The two of them let out a quiet groan before retrying.

"Nice to meet ya… again." Korra offered her hands first this time.

Asami grabbed it before firmly shaking her hand. "Ditto."

One squeeze later, Korra was a little surprised one could say. Asami's hand wasn't as soft as she had thought it was going to be. She had a fair amount of calluses and her grip was stronger than she thought. She pegged her to be the useless princess type so it was a cool surprise that she probably wasn't. Probably that is.

"Anyways we should get going now, I don't want to take up too much of your time," Hiroshi says with a warm smile.

"Sure, sounds great, we'll have to talk again sometime later," Tonraq says while shaking his hand one last time.

Korra only kept her gaze downward before glancing at Asami again. Asami immediately looks away for some reason when they make eye contact before their awkward meet and greet finally ends. Once Korra's family shut the door, her mom spoke up.

"Asami's really pretty huh?"

Wondering what her mom was implying, Korra agreed hesitantly. "Yeah…?"

"She seemed like a nice girl, I'm sure you two would get along!"

"Uhuh…?"

"We won't be mad if she comes over often by the way."

That made Korra's face scrunch slightly. "And what are you trying to imply…?"

Her mother simply shrugged. "She has my thumbs of approval if you wanna shoot for it, you two would make a cute couple."

"Mom!" Her eyes immediately snapped open in shock, "We barely just moved here! Don't go shipping me with our neighbor's daughter! I don't even know her!"

"I'm just saying honey, you have our permission if you want to date her."

Flabbergasted, Korra threw up her hands. "You don't even know if she's into women!"

Tonraq finally decided to tease his daughter as well. "I don't think your chances are low, she was looking at you, honey."

"Not you too dad!" Dragging her hand down her face, Korra huffed before walking away. "It's not gonna happen!" She then quickly stormed up the stairs, forgetting the reason why she came down in the first place.

Once she was out of place, Senna couldn't help but sigh.

"I feel bad for her dear…"

Tonraq only wrapped his wife's waist comfortingly. "Me too, I just hope she could make a few friends…"

"They seemed like good people."

"They did."

"And… Asami was definitely her type."

"Yup."

xXx

Inhaling a deep breath through her nose, Korra exhaled from her mouth before slowing down to a slow walk. She continued to move forward before wiping her sweat with the rim of her shirt. It's been about a month since she settled in her new home. She has had a few opportunities to interact with her neighbors, namely the Satos since they were next door, but honestly, she didn't care. She didn't make much of an effort to befriend them and every time they 'hung out' Korra would remain indifferent.

No one was at fault really… Korra was just bored. That's why she spent most of her time to herself and went jogging most evenings. Today was no different and she had a good run and burn. At least… until she heard some sort of power tool snap and a loud 'ow fuck!' which made her immediately turn her head.

It had come from her neighbor's house.

Worry immediately washed over her body and Korra quickly ran up the Sato's lawn before calling out. "Hey! Is everything okay in there?" She feel bad for trespassing but if something bad did happen, she couldn't stay still. There was silence and that only worried her more. When she walked into the back where a shed was located, which she assumed was a workshop, she quickly made her way to it. She called out one more time, "Hey! You good—"

Her eyes popped open when she saw blood trickle down Asami's arm.

"Oh shit!"

Korra quickly ran over to assess the situation.

"You good?!"

Grunting in pain, Asami looked up from her bleeding arm. She was tightly holding her forearm with a towel progressively getting bloody by the second. "Uh… yes and no…?"

"Bruh. You fucking arm is bleeding out!" She was starting to panic more than her, "Where's your first aid kit!"

Asami laughed precariously. "It's over there," she nodded toward a direction and Korra immediately bolted toward it.

Once Korra snatched it off the shelf, she ran back to push Asami down onto the nearest stool. She cracked open the first aid kit before looking at the assortment of tools.

"It's not as bad as it looks…" Asami defended before wincing at the pain when Korra held her arm upward to elevate it.

Korra shot her a glare before bringing her hand back down and picking out some wooden splinters. Quickly enough, she then opened the disinfecting alcohol bottle to wash her wound.

"Ow ow oww… fuck." She closed an eye to bear the pain before Korra started to apply a bandaid.

"Maybe not but you're spewing blood like a fountain here. This ain't no Twilight movie so vampires ain't gonna clean it up."

"Pfft—" that gets Asami to slap her mouth shut. She was about to crack up before wincing again when Korra applied pressure. By the time Asami's arm was nicely bandaged up, she was in awe of Korra's work. "Wow… I don't think my parents have wrapped me up this neatly before."

Korra shoots Asami a glare. "Excuse me?"

Understanding Korra's implication, Asami simply shrugged. "It doesn't happen often but sometimes things slip…" she then glances over at the workbench. "Shitty wood apparently… some splinter shot off…" she confessed sheepishly.

"I can see that." She said in a scolding tone while staring at the bloody splinters on the floor. "Why aren't you phased by this though?"

Asami blinked as if that was a ridiculous question. "Well… for one, this rarely happens and two, panicking isn't gonna stop a bleeding arm."

Rolling her eyes, Korra got up. "I should probably call your mom and dad to take you to the hospital."

That gets Asami to twitch. "Wait!" She stood up before grabbing Korra's arm.

Korra gave her a deadpanned look. "What?"

Asami's eyebrow twitched before she sheepishly answered after clearing her throat. "My parents aren't um… home."

"Hah?" Korra's judging look never changed, in fact, they grew deeper. "They're not? Yet here you are, with dangerous tools. In the back away from people. All alone?"

She blinked innocently a few times. "Yes…?"

A heavy sigh left Korra's mouth before she shouted in the direction of her backyard. "MOMMM! DADDD!" She then grabbed Asami's hand before dragging her over to her house. Shortly enough, her parents hastily opened the back door.

"What's wrong honey?!"

She raised her voice again. "We need to take Asami to the hospital!"

Senna's mouth dropped. "What?! What happened? Oh my goodness is she okay!"

"I'll get the car." Tonraq quickly pivoted around.

Asami only let out a nervous chuckle. "Sorry…?"

"Geez…" Korra then pushed Asami toward the front of her house. "I patched her up but she should get looked at a hospital." She then paused to look Asami in the eyes. "You get in the car, I'll go turn shit off. Do you have your phone? Text your parents."

"But—"

"No buts. Here." Korra pulled out her phone and handed it to Asami before walking back toward the shed. "Pass lock is 8008."

Just like that, time flashed by within seconds and before Asami knew it, one awkward-ish car ride later, she was at the hospital. After receiving treatment, Korra's parents were talking on the phone with her parents and the doctors while she was on standby with Korra in the waiting room. For some reason, after the whole panic, Korra was back to being indifferent on her phone as she waited to go home.

Asami finally couldn't take the awkwardness anymore before starting. "Sooooo…"

Korra only shifted in her seat. "So?"

Her eyes lingered on Korra's phone before smirked. "8008 huh?"

Korra looks Asami in the eyes before looking back down at her phone. "Yup."

Her smile never left, "How classy."

Korra looks up again at that comment before eyeing Asami conspicuously. Busted. She eventually cracks a smile before shooting back, "Says the one with cats on their undies."

Asami's face immediately flushed red. "Wha— how did you—" she slapped her mouth shut to stop herself from further embarrassment.

Throwing her a wink, Korra couldn't help herself. "I attract all the pussies."

Her jaw dropped.

"Korra dear, Asami, it's time to head home."

"Coming," Korra stood up before offering Asami a hand, "You're more interesting than I pegged you to be Sato… I mean come on, Nyan cat of all prints?"

Asami's ears grew red as well. She slapped away Korra's hand before shooting back, "Says the one with 'BOOB' as their pass lock!"

Korra laughed out loud this time as she made her way to her parents. "Hey, at least I'm subtle about it!"

Not believing what she was hearing, Asami scoffed. "Subtle? You call that being subtle!"

She gave her a big grin. "Why not?"

"Why not?!" Asami repeated as she chased after Korra. "What do you mean 'why not' you dork!" She was smiling brightly at this point.

Korra shit eating grin never left. Maybe, just maybe moving out here wasn't such a bad idea after all. Saying goodbye did mean the start of something one after all.
