Persephone opens her satchel, taking out a piece of vellum and reed, the vellum smells of smoke; burnt flesh, wood, and lavender and rose. The floral scents are the only remnants of her sisters; the Flower Nymphs, who didn't escape the torches of the Spartans' as they burnt the fields of crops as a means to starve the mortals.
She sits at the edge of a meadow and undoes her hair, grimacing from the scent of the same smoke on it and her peplos, she thinks of how she wanted so badly to suffocate those Spartan's with vines which she would summon from the ground and wrap around their throats, how the thorns would dig in and the blood would pool to their feet before they bled no more and they collapsed to the ground into a heap of flesh. How she wishes to avenge her sisters, her Flower Nymphs but is left feeling useless because she has been warned not to engage in mortal affairs.
She unrolls her parchment and begins to write:
To Hades, my lover and husband,
I am sure that you have heard of the wars up above in the Mortal Realm with the influx of mortals in the underworld. Athena disguises herself before delivering a piece of parchment detailing the location of a nearby Spartan camp to the Athenians so that they may ambush them. And Ares the brute that he is, delivers various weapons to the Spartans including balls of smoke which he has gathered from the eastern parts of the world. The two of them debate on who will win the war, when a truce is finally struck, Athena is happy that these men have finally come to their senses but the truce only lasted so long before Eris visited the dreams of Alcibiades and had him join the Spartans rather then the Athenian's. It seems the three of them do not want this war to stop, and although my Nymphs and I would usually remain unaffected by such things and I could careless, the burning of crops as a means to starve off the Athenian's has killed my sisters and left me homeless. I spend most days camping in the valleys, avoiding the mortals for if I do see them they may provoke me and I may commit yet another act of wrath and we both know how that went the first time around. I would much rather prefer to be banished to the mortal realm for six months of a year as to several years of punishment with strict rules and regulations dictating my harvest. Oh and my harvest, how I worked so hard to grow crops for the ever growing population before this war, how I even created medicinal herbs to help with the plague which ravaged the streets of Athens and how it's now all been burnt to the ground. I think of the innocents who will starve as a side effect of this war, the ones who have already died from the plagues, and the other's who will burn in one of the fires set by either party to kill off friend's and family.
Oh my dear Hades, how I miss you and the Underworld; the lack of smoke down there would be a miracle to senses since the air here smells of burnt flesh, blood, and rot until I'm able to find a meadow that smells a little bit like home; or at least what I would've called home before they burnt it all down.
See you in three months,
Your wife and lover, Persephone
Persephone rolls up her vellum and places the reed back in her satchel, Hermes should be coming by soon, he knows to find her in the meadows which have not yet been occupied by the Spartans and Athenians.
"Persephone!" A woman calls to her wearing military gear, Persephone looks up at her and her eyes turn a shade of red as she thinks of what the mortals had done to her and her family. She gets ready to strike before noticing that this woman is no mortal; no she's a demigod.
"Who are you?" Persephone asks standing tall and straightening her peplos.
"I am Kassandra the Eagle Bearer" Kassandra grabs two scrolls from her belt "Hermes has hired me to deliver and collect letters from the mortal realm. I have one from Hades and another from Daphne" Kassandra places a finger under her chin thinking "Is this the Daphne from the myths? The one who everyone thought turned into a tree and died?"
"Yes Misthios" Persephone had heard of her before "I also have a letter which I need delivered to Hades" Persephone hands her own letter to Kassandra and takes the scrolls from her, she regrets not writing one to Daphne but does not want to disturb her with the news of her sisters' passing.
"We'll I will be on my way" Kassandra places the scroll in her belt and runs to a horse who is hidden behind a tree, hops on it then gallops away into the sunset.
Persephone sits down next the lake and unravels Daphne's letter first, it appears that news of the harvest fires had travelled to Olympus and the Underworld and Daphne wanted to know if her sister's are okay, Persephone trusts that Hades will share the content of the letter with her and rolls up the letter wiping tears from her eyes as she does so. Persephone unrolls Hades letter next:
Persephone,
I have received word from the Mortal Realm regarding a new war between the Spartans and Athenians and the burning of crops. Has this impacted your harvest? Are you alright? Do you need anything?
I have also heard of two Demigods who have been involved in this war as most demigods are, they can't seem to live their lives peacefully; Kassandra of Sparta and Deimos. Will you write to me of them if you meet them? I do love reading and hearing of the gods children and the messes which they make.
With love,
Hades
Persephone giggles before rolling up the scroll then leans back in the grass before looking up into the sky, she notices a funnel of smoke forming from the north and gathers her things ready to travel to another meadow.
