Summary: In which, Jacob finds a 'bunny'.
Thump.
Jacob, who had been lying back in a long chair on the patio, opened his eyes, then wished he hadn't, for he had looked directly into the bright summer sun. He rubbed his burning eyes for a moment before reaching over to set up the umbrella to get a little shade. He lay back once more, closing his eyes.
But all he could see was a brilliant shade of midnight blue whenever his eyelids shut. He was unable to imagine anything else or dream of anything but that color. A deep hue of blue that was almost as dark as midnight.
Thump. Thump.
There it was again. Jacob groaned, slightly annoyed. He had heard thumping for a while today, but could not understand where it was coming from or what it was that made that sound. He opened his eyes once more. At least he could see clearly when his eyes were open. After adjusting the umbrella on its stand a bit more over the chair, he lay still, listening.
Thump!
Jacob quickly sat up. This thumping was getting annoying. It couldn't be Queenie, for she was out with her sister at the moment. It couldn't be Newt, for he was across the Atlantic off in Britain, somewhere. So what the heck was it? He stood up, trying to focus on where that sound was coming from.
He heard some scuffling under the boards of the wood deck. But no—wait!
Thump! THUMP!
There it was. So the thing doing it was below him.
Jacob went down the steps, then knelt into the grass to peer underneath the deck. "BUNNY!" Jacob laughed as his eyes landed on a large brown cottontail with two midnight blue streaks coming from its head. "Oh, you're hurt! Hang on. Let me try to help you out." He stood up, wondering why its blood was midnight blue. Didn't rabbits bleed red?
A few minutes later, Jacob resorted to prying loose a few boards to get at the bunny. Now, it was time to catch the poor thing. It must be terrified, stuck down there, unable to do anything but watch as he slowly reached in for it.
Incidentally, catching it was easy, for the hapless lagomorph was in fact, caught between boards. No wonder it was thumping so much!
However, the way it was trapped surprised Jacob. The midnight blue streaks on its head were not blood, but fuzzy new antlers which had been jammed up between the boards.
"Ok, this is something magical, isn't it?" Jacob gasped. Being Polish originally, he didn't know much about North American wildlife of any sort, but a bunny with antlers would most likely be something magical, he figured as he stared at the fuzzy points sticking up between long ears. "Horned bunnies. Horned ... bunnies?" He thought that over. "Bunnies with horns." He grinned. "Oh yeah!"
Queenie appeared on the porch at that moment. She stared at him, her eyes drifting to his hands pressed up to his chest, holding the creature. "Oh my gosh! You caught a JACKALOPE?!" Her eyes went wide.
Jacob nodded. "Yeah, it was stuck under the floor." He petted the head between the horns of velvet.
"We must let Newt know," Queenie said. "They are going extinct, so he is trying to set up a breeding program in his case." She quickly checked over it with her wand. "Female. Probably a year or two old. Perfect!" She stroked the midnight blue antlers. "Each jackalope has their own color horns. You will never find another one with midnight blue antlers.
"It's funny, but all I could see when I closed my eyes earlier was midnight blue," Jacob said.
"It's a signal that jackalopes send out when they are stressed," Queenie explained. "The color matches what their antlers are colored. Only a friend would pick it up. She's beautiful!"
"Yeah, she sure is!" Jacob said, cuddling the jackalope up under his chin.
