Thena and Gilgamesh are married in the movie, period. Please, enjoy this little fluffy drabble!
[Somewhere between 1521 and 2023-]
''Marry me."
Thena froze in her seat at their little table, with fork in her hand, and looked at Gilgamesh in confusion, wondering if she had misheard. The man chewed his food undisturbed, as if he hadn't noticed her surprise, or as if he hadn't fully realized what he'd just said.
Thena blinked. ''What?"
''Let's get married," he repeated with his mouth full.
She watched him silently for a long moment, wondering if he might have suffered a sunstroke. Sensing her unbelieving gaze on him, he finally looked up at her and only smiled brightly with the feeling in his eyes that he had been looking at her with every day.
Only then did she realize he was being serious.
''But…" she started, but it was hard for her to find the right words. She put her cutlery on the plate and straightened up. She suddenly felt the need to pinch her arm to make sure she wasn't dreaming. ''Where did this idea come from?"
Gilgamesh reached for the mug and drank from it. ''Just think about it," he said. ''We've been living together for hundreds of years now. We have the same goals and dreams, we care for and look after each other. We've literally spent our entire lives together, and it doesn't look like anything is going to change any time soon. That's what marriage is all about, right?" He put the mug back on the table, took a piece of meat with his fork and put it into his mouth.
He spoke about such important things as if he were talking about the weather, but something in the tone of his voice that he tried to hide and the gleam in his brown eyes was giving away that it really mattered to him. Thena was silent, not knowing what to think. Everything he said was true, although he skipped a few details. Yes, they had lived together for centuries, but they couldn't be sure that had it not been for the Mahd Wy'ry, they would have been like that too. She had stopped counting how many times he had assured her that it was his conscious choice and that nowhere else in the world he would have been happier than in the Australian desert with her, and she believed him. She believed in his honesty, devotion and kind heart. With him, she felt safe, happy and as full as possible. It was him who cared for her, protected her and kept her sane, not letting the illness take her away, even when he suffered because of it. Gilgamesh had offered her himself and his life, and she had repaid the same. He was her everything and she was his. They didn't have to talk about it, they didn't have to show it to the world - they knew it, and that was enough.
The kind of relationship they had was as natural as breathing, though at times it seemed to be kept a secret even from themselves.
She looked at him at the same time he looked at her, and their eyes met. There was a calm look on his face. He stopped eating, patiently waiting for her answer. He knew she needed her time to think the idea through.
''Would it make you happy?" she finally asked.
''Would it make you happy?"
Gilgamesh all over, she thought. Always putting her good above his own.
In fact, she didn't need any more thought. She actually knew the answer to that question before he even asked it, but talking about feelings and expressing them was never her strenght. She understood now his point of view, that they had been acting like a good old couple for a long time, but still, in spite of all, it was strange when something so obvious that didn't need words was finally spoken out loud.
Thena nodded once, shifted in her chair, and reached for the cutlery again. ''Alright, then. Let's do it," she said and started eating. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Gilgamesh's lips curve into a grin.
''Alright, then."
''Alright."
They finished their meal in silence, but it was a pleasant kind of silence, and feeling his gaze on herself and seeing that smile she loved so much, she couldn't stop the corners of her own lips from going up.
It was the strangest and best engagement Thena had ever heard of.
[ -rather sooner than later, cause they're in love.]
