Chapter 10: Lady Bird
SCENE: JOES BAR
(Amber sits at a table with Dahlia and Casey as they look around the bar for Amber to pick up)
Dahlia: (Points at a brunette in a red dress) Okay how about her?
Amber: (Looks for one second) Nope.
Dahlia: (Scoffs) Seriously? What is wrong with you?
Amber: (Looks for an excuse) Nothing it's just…what would I say?
Dahlia and Casey: You're a doctor.
Amber: (Can't tell them about Andrew) …No she's not right that's…I'm not up for it.
Casey: (Raises an eyebrow) You're not up for it? Where was the chastity belt a few months ago? I mean by then you had so many conquests we lost score.
Dahlia: Yeah, what are you scared or something?
Amber: (Sips her beer) Yes, I am scared, I'm scared by you two trying to hook me up with some stranger at a bar because your both lonely.
Casey: (Chuckling) Okay if you're not scared then pick up the person I choose and I'll consider a man this time.
Amber: (Groans and sips her beer)
(Casey scans the bar and spots a guy with his back toward them playing darts with Link and Webber)
Casey: Okay him leather jacket he looks like he can turn your frown upside down.
Dahlia: Oh, come on too easy.
(The man comes into view revealing it to be Andrew DeLuca who plays darts next)
Casey: (Shocked) Whoa! Never mind.
Amber: (Slightly grins as she finally sees her ticket out)
Dahlia: Yeah, I take it back, not easy, disturbing.
Casey: Okay Dahlia you pick someone else, someone her brother hasn't hospitalized.
(Amber downs a tequila shot and slaps Casey's back)
Casey: Amber?
Dahlia: What are you doing?
(Amber leaves the table ignoring them heading towards Andrew)
Dahlia: (Gasps) Oh god this is bad, this is so bad.
Casey: (Downs his beer) True but it'll make great entertainment for us.
CUT TO ANDREWS TABLE
(Andrew plays darts when Amber touches his arm and he turns to see her)
Amber: (Hushed voice) Leave with me right now.
Andrew: (Confused) What?
Amber: (Gestures to Casey and Dahlia watching in anxiety) They're trying to get me to pick someone up and I'm running out of excuses. Until Casey picked you by accident.
Link: DeLuca you gonna go or what?
Amber: No.
Andrew: No?
Amber: No because the best excuse that I have to not having a one-night stand with a stranger is to have a one-night stand with someone I am already having sex with. So, leave with me right now please. I'll do that thing with my tongue you like so much. Twice.
(Andrew looks at Amber in shock for a moment before downing his whiskey)
Andrew: (To Link) Cover my tab?
Link: (Chuckles) Sure man.
(Andrew grins and takes Amber's hand leading her out of the bar with Casey and Dahlia watching in shock as she grins and mouths bye)
Casey: Oh my god.
Dahlia: W-Was that for real?
CUT TO THE MORNING
SCENE: ANDREWS APARTMENT
(Amber wakes up in Andrew's bed after spending the night there. She puts her clothes on and sees Andrew in the kitchen cooking eggs and bacon)
Amber: Good morning.
Andrew: Morning, I was just about to wake you. I hope you like eggs and bacon.
Amber: As long as there's coffee on the side, I'll take it.
(They both sit down on the counter and eat)
Amber: So, um…thanks for being my excuse last night I uh I know your not on board with us being secret and uh-
Andrew: (Chuckles) It's fine I am happy being your excuse out of having sex with strangers. But you didn't have to proposition me with the tongue thing, I would've gone home with you.
Amber: (Grins) Well it was also for my pleasure too.
Andrew: (Grins) So, what do you got today?
Amber: I'm on cardio with Pierce. We've got an ICD and Ablation today so it's gonna be simple what about you?
Andrew: Hunt has me on the pit today. Its flu season so its gonna get messy.
Amber: (Groans in disgust) Sorry. If you want, I can come down and help.
Andrew: Thank you but I'll be fine just enjoy cardio and stay as far away from the flu warzone as you can.
Amber: (Chuckles) Will do.
AN HOUR LATER AT THE LOCKER ROOM
(Casey and Dahlia enter the room and find Taryn getting ready alone)
Dahlia: (Smiles) We have news, big news, like big breaking news.
Taryn: (Puts her scrub top on) What is it?
Casey: Dahlia and I took Amber to a bar last night and to get her to go home with someone.
Taryn: (Scoffs) Since when does she need your help to do that?
Dahlia: Because we wanted to be nice and live vicariously through her.
Casey: (Grins) News…Amber went home with Andrew DeLuca.
Taryn: (Gasps) No! You're kidding?
Dahlia: (Laughs) He's not, I was there and I saw the whole thing or just her picking him up not…the whole thing.
Taryn: DeLuca? As in the guy who rejected her DeLuca?
Casey: The one and only.
(Levi enters the room)
Levi: Morning.
Taryn: (Smiling and in shock) Amber slept with DeLuca.
(Levi looks up in shock but doesn't say anything)
Casey: Did you not hear us? Amber Karev picked up Andrew DeLuca at a bar and had sex with him last night.
Levi: (Ignores them and opens his locker)
Dahlia: (Catches on) You know something don't you?
Casey: You do, you know something; you don't get stone cold when you hear news of this magnitude. What is it?
Levi: (Keeps quiet as he puts his scrubs on)
Taryn: What is it? Did she call you with all the juicy details? Did it go well? Did it go badly?
Levi: (Stays quiet and turns with a conflicted face)
Dahlia: Wait a minute are they gonna do it again? Is that what she said?
Levi: (Looks to the ceiling in panic as they gather around him)
Casey: (Slowly realizes it) Wait a minute have they done it before? How many times have they done it before? Are-
Dahlia: (Finally gets to the truth) Oh my god! They're dating!
Levi: (Looks at them finally with wide eyes confirming their suspicions)
(Amber enters the room)
Amber: Hey guys.
Casey: (Smiling) Your dating Andrew DeLuca?
(Amber looks at them in shock as Levi looks at her)
Levi: I didn't say a word I swear.
Amber: (Mouth gaps) …I…yes, I am.
Dahlia: (Laughs) Oh my god! This is fantastic!
Amber: (Puts her scrubs on) But nobody else knows, okay? It's early and I want to see where it goes if it's even going anywhere.
Taryn: But you two are dating?
Amber: Yes, but I don't want my family to know until I figure it out so (Goes to them with malice in her eyes) If either of you say anything to anyone outside of this inner circle, I will make you guys into cadavers for the anatomy lab got it?
(They all nod in fear)
Amber: Good now if you all will excuse me, I have to go to cardio. Levi we'll talk later.
(Amber leaves the locker room with Levi left in fear of his life)
Levi: I didn't say a word!
LATER ON THE SECOND FLOOR
(Amber waits for Maggie by the station as she approaches Amber)
Maggie: (Clears throat) Sorry I'm late I had to attend Cece's funeral. What do we got Karev?
Amber: Your ICD is in the room waiting for the procedure and your ablation was in CT an hour ago and the scans are on the file now.
Maggie: Great thank you. Let me just review the scans and we can prep the patient for his pacemaker.
(Maggie is viewing the computer when Teddy and Owen's argument catches their attention)
Teddy: Your teenager answered your door!
Owen: Maybe you would've saved a lot of people a lot of pain, but no you waited five whole weeks to-
Teddy: Wait are you try-are you saying that somehow its my fault that you and Amelia are back together again?
Owen: I'm just saying it's a crap situation, which is worse than it would've been had you been a little more up front.
Amelia: I had some excellent nicknames, but 'Crap Situation' might be my new favorite.
(Amelia walks away with a remorseful Owen following her. Maggie turns her attention to the screen)
Teddy: Hey. So…I need a job and Karev said that I should talk to you.
(Maggie silently gives Teddy an angry face with Amber behind her)
Amber: Do you want me to prep the patient or…?
Maggie: Prep him and inform him that Dr. Altman will be performing the procedure. It's an ICD do you think you can handle it?
Teddy: Yes absolutely.
Maggie: In the meantime, I'll give you a tour of the floor and how I run things here. Dr. Karev?
Amber: I will page Dr. Altman when he is prepped.
(Amber leaves to inform Joseph Bells of the new changes)
Amber: Hi Joseph how are you feeling today?
Joseph: I'd feel better if I had my damn surgery already. Is Dr. Pierce here?
Amber: She is but she will not be performing your surgery today.
Joseph: What? Why? Did something happen?
Amber: …Not exactly. The chief of cardio before her wants a position here and Dr. Pierce is giving her your surgery. I assure you that Dr. Altman is incredibly capable of performing this procedure, she could do it with her eyes closed and one hand behind her back. But she won't I promise you.
Joseph: (Chuckling) Are you sure she's not a butter finger? I mean did she get fired here or something?
Amber: Not at all. She left on her own to pursue bigger things outside the country, she only recently came back.
Joseph: And why is she back?
Amber: …She has family here. Would you like to meet her before your surgery? Would that make you more comfortable?
Joseph: Very much so yes.
Amber: Okay just hang on while I get her.
(Amber walks to Maggie and Teddy in the hallway)
Amber: Dr. Altman? Joseph Bell wants to meet you before the surgery, he's a little uncomfortable having a new surgeon.
Teddy: He's not the only one that's uncomfortable, I will meet him right now. Is that alright Pierce?
(Maggies phone beeps paging her to a trauma)
Maggie: Yeah, that's fine there's an incoming trauma I need to go to. Karev you're with me, Altman prep Joseph for his surgery and let me know when you're done. Let's go.
(Maggie and Amber run to the pit where paramedics roll a man inside with a young woman beside him)
Maggie: What do we got?
Travis: Frank Jensen, 42 heart attack. We resuscitated him on transport. We ran his EKG in the van here it is.
Maggie: His T and R waves are through the roof lets get him to trauma 1.
Kayla: Is my dad dying? Is he dead?
Amber: What's your name honey?
Kayla: Kayla.
Amber: Okay Kayla were gonna do everything we can to treat your father but you need to stand back okay?
(Kayla stands outside the room and Frank's monitor flatlines)
Maggie: He's in V-Fib. Let's start compressions.
Amber: On it.
(Amber starts compressions)
Maggie: Paddles! Let's charge to 200! Clear!
(Amber stops compressions and Maggie shocks Frank with no response. Amber starts compressions again)
Maggie: Again, clear!
(Maggie shocks Frank who responds)
Amber: Heart rates back to 60 and his pressure is 115 over 75.
Maggie: Let's get him to the cath lab. Karev based on his EKG what's the approach?
Amber: Bypass.
Kayla: Wait a bypass?
Maggie: Yes, Kayla we got your fathers rhythm back but he's still at high risk for another cardiac arrest. We need to find the blockage that cause his heart attack and most likely graft new vessels around it.
Kayla: But that would include transfusing blood, wouldn't it?
Amber: Yes, it does.
Kayla: Then I refuse the surgery.
Maggie: Refuse? What?
Kayla: My father can't have any surgery that involves the administration of blood. We're Jehovah's Witnesses.
(Both women stand in the trauma room with their hands tied)
CUT TO BLACK
(After getting Frank in the CCU Maggie and Amber regroup in the nurse's station)
Amber: Can't we do it anyway? His daughter's 15 so she doesn't actually have power of attorney.
Maggie: We need to ask Frank personally if he consents to bypass.
Amber: And if he doesn't?
Maggie: (Sighs) Then we have to respect his wishes no matter how absurd we think it is.
Amber: God this sucks.
Maggie: I agree.
Nurse: Dr. Pierce, Mr. Jensen is awake now.
Maggie: Thank you. I'll try to convince him to have the surgery, go check on Altman and see how she is.
(Amber leaves the CCU and runs into Andrew)
Amber: Hey I thought you should know that we've been outed.
Andrew: What?
Amber: Levi, Taryn, Dahlia and Casey know about us. Levi sang like a canary but don't worry I'll make him squeal like a pig.
Andrew: Okay are they gonna tell other people?
Amber: Hell no, I put the fear of God in them, so hopefully we remain somewhat of a secret for longer.
Andrew: Okay what is the big deal of other's finding out? I mean we're not doing anything wrong.
Amber: No, but I don't want other people badgering me about this when we don't even know what this is yet. Do you want my brother or sister interrogating you about what your intentions are?
Andrew: …Fair enough, but just to be clear your the one who propositioned me last night and outed us to your friends.
Amber: That was a carefully devised plan that I came up with while inebriated so that I didn't walk out of that bar with someone else to get Casey and Dahlia off my back. Would you have rather I done that? Or did that tongue thing with someone else?
Andrew: (Immediately) No, I liked that plan of yours way better.
Amber: Great. How's your day going so far?
Andrew: Pit is filling up but I'm surviving so far, what about you?
Amber: I've got a STEMI whose daughter is refusing him to get a bypass.
Andrew: What? Why?
Amber: Their Jehovah's Witnesses.
Andrew: Oh damn. Is there a chance he'll have a heart attack soon?
Amber: Very much so. I just hope that Pierce can convince him to get the surgery.
Teddy: What's going on with Pierce? Is it that trauma? Did something happen?
Amber: No, our patient is a Jehovah's Witness who needs a bypass surgery to correct his STEMI. Unless we can convince him to let us do the surgery, he's gonna have a heart attack again.
Teddy: Maybe not. Walk me to the patient I think I have a way to save him without administering blood.
LATER IN THE CCU
(Maggie tries to get Frank to consent as Amber and Teddy enter the room)
Maggie: Dr. Altman? Are you done with the ICD?
Teddy: Yeah, he's recovering in his room now. What's the problem?
Frank: I was just explaining to Dr. Pierce that I can't accept any surgery that involves transfusing or administering blood into or out of my body.
Maggie: Frank we respect your beliefs but the fact is that you are going to have another heart attack unless we do this surgery. The only question is when.
Kayla: Is there any alternative that doesn't involve the administration of blood?
Amber: Kayla it's his own blood that's just re-circulated.
Frank: We believe that blood contains the gift of life. Once it leaves the body its contaminated forever.
(Maggie rubs her eyes in frustration)
Kayla: I know you think we're being difficult but my father and I just don't want to go against God's word and not spend eternity together in paradise.
Maggie: I understand that but-
Teddy: What about a bloodless surgery?
(Maggie looks at Teddy in annoyance)
Frank: What's that?
Teddy: It's where we perform the surgery off pump. We operate on the heart while it's still beating.
Amber: That's possible?
Teddy: Yes.
Maggie: But it comes with significant risks far greater than if you choose bypass.
Teddy: For the Jensen's the heart lung machine is a risk far greater on their religious beliefs than on their physical health. Transfusing blood into Frank violates their faith so I propose that we do it without the machine.
(A tense moment passes in the room)
Maggie: Give us a moment to talk while you consider your options.
(Three of them step outside of the room)
Maggie: He has severe three vessel disease and his last EKG shows significant T and R changes. He is too high of a risk for this very experimental procedure.
Teddy: Its better than doing nothing. I know you don't like me Dr. Pierce but I came here because I wanted to give Mr. Jensen a fighting chance. This is about him and not you or Amelia let me make that very clear.
Amber: (Muttering to herself) Suddenly I wish I was in the flu warzone. (Normal) Look lets just calm down and give them some time to think about it, they might-
(Kayla walks to them)
Kayla: We made a decision; we want to do the bloodless surgery.
Teddy: Okay. Dr. Karev go inform the O.R.
Amber: (Sighs) Yes ma'am.
(Amber leaves to get the O.R. prepped)
FOUR HOURS LATER IN THE O.R.
(Amber retracts as Maggie and Teddy work on Frank)
Teddy: We're about two thirds done so far so good. There's no major blood loss and the LAD is finished.
Maggie: Let's not celebrate just yet we still have to raise the heart to get at the RMA. Increase his pressure. Karev, can you see the blockage?
(Amber is momentarily distracted when she sees Andrew in the gallery grinning and mouthing 'hi' to her causing her to smile behind the mask)
Teddy: Dr. Karev?
Amber: Sorry what?
Teddy: Dr. Pierce was just asking if you can see the blockage.
Amber: Right um yes its at the RMA and approximately 2 inches long.
Maggie: It's a big one what vessel do we use for this kind of blockage.
Amber: Uh his arteries from his chest are too damaged so we use Dacron as a prosthetic graft.
Teddy: Very good. Scalpel and Gerald.
Nurse: Scalpel.
(The monitor beeps rapidly)
Anesthesiologist: Blood pressure bottomed out. You got to lower the heart back down.
Maggie: Okay, quickly.
(The lower the heart back in place but the monitors still beep)
Amber: What happened?
Teddy: He's in V-fib.
Maggie: I knew it I knew this was gonna happen. We have to put him on the pump now. (To Nurse) Get a perfusionist and bypass team in here right now.
Teddy: That's not an option Dr. Pierce you know that. We'll defibrillate him and continue as planned.
Maggie: And then what? This is just gonna happen again because you overstepped.
Teddy: Well now you know how it feels when someone oversteps into your territory huh. Get the paddles.
Maggie: No! We have to put him on bypass right now or he will die in seconds! I'm massaging the heart. She-Karev get his daughter in here so she can give her consent now!
Teddy: You really want to scare a teenager into giving a man a surgery he clearly doesn't want?
Maggie: I am just trying to fix the mess that you caused! Get the daughter in here Karev now!
Teddy: Karev-
Amber: (Fed up) Okay shut up! Both of you just stop!
(Maggie and Teddy stop yelling and look at Amber in shock)
Amber: I don't know what personal crap is going on between the two of you but it stops right here and right now! This man may die on this table not because of a risky procedure but because you two would rather duke it out over his open body than agree on a course of treatment and I am not getting in the middle of that. So, here's what were gonna do, you two try to keep the patient as stable as you can while I get his daughter in here and calmly explain to her that bypass is the only way her father gets out of this O.R. alive. If she agrees with it then get the team if she doesn't then we continue the bloodless surgery got it?
(Maggie and Teddy look at each other before nodding)
Amber: Great. I'll be right back with Kayla. Don't try to kill each other till then.
(Amber throws her gown away and rushes out of the room leaving Maggie to massage the heart. Amber grabs a gown and mask for Kayla with Andrew following her)
Andrew: Hey that was-
Amber: (Realizes what she did) Crazy? Insane? Grounds for unemployment?
Andrew: Yeah, all of those things cover it.
Amber: You'll still want to be with me after I'm fired right?
Andrew: Let's just focus on getting Kayla in there. Are you gonna be okay doing it?
Amber: I'll be fine, thanks. Kayla?
Kayla: Is my father, okay? Is he out of surgery?
Amber: …Please come with me and put this on.
(Kayla puts the gown and mask on while she follows Amber to the O.R. where they see Frank still bottoming out with Maggie still massaging the heart)
Teddy: We're not getting the pressure back.
Kayla: (Voice breaking) Dad?
Maggie: I'm sorry but your dad is dying. The only thing keeping him alive is pumping his heart in my hands.
Amber: (Turns Kayla to face her) Kayla. If you don't authorize the bypass operation right now, you'll never see him alive again.
(Kayla sobs as she looks at the chaos in the room)
Kayla: Is there really no other way?
Teddy: No, I'm sorry but no.
Kayla: …Do it, do what you have to. Forgive me Jehovah.
Amber: I'll take you back to the waiting room while they work.
Maggie: Let's get a perfusionist and bypass team in her stat!
(Amber leads a distressed Kayla out of the room. Teddy looks at Maggie with contempt)
Maggie: We're doing the right thing here.
LATER AT THE CCU
(Amber monitors Frank when Teddy and Maggie bring Kayla in the room who walks to her dad's side smiling)
Frank: I told you it would be all right. Jehovah lit the path for me to survive. It was his will. He gave these doctors the means the save me without going against his word. Thank you doctors.
(Kayla's smile fades as she looks at the ground guilty. Amber and Teddy look at Maggie who decides to tell Frank)
Maggie: Frank there were complications in your surgery.
Frank: (Eyebrow's furrow) What kind of complications?
Teddy: …Unfortunately you went into cardiac arrest on the table and we had no choice but to use the bypass machine after all.
Frank: I made my wishes clear. (To Kayla) Did they tell you they were doing this?
Kayla: They did and I gave them permission to do it.
Frank: (Gasps) How could you do this to me?
Kayla: (Voice breaking) I did it for you, you weren't going to survive that surgery.
Frank: How is God going to let me spend eternity after what you did?
Kayla: Dad I-
Frank: Leave.
Kayla: Dad.
Frank: Please leave.
(Kayla sobs but leaves the room, Amber looks at her in pity)
Frank: You had no right.
Maggie: Mr. Jensen I'm so sorry.
Frank: You had no right, get out now.
Teddy: (Clears throat) Dr. Karev, keep a close eye on his BP if something goes wrong page another cardio attending.
(Maggie and Teddy leave the room and head to the cardio floor)
Maggie: I'm sorry for going off on you in the OR. I know you were just trying to do what the patient wanted.
Teddy: Its fine, he would've died without the bypass and I know that I overstepped. I guess I'm so used to running my own department here and in Germany that I thought it would be like old times but its not. You're the cardio chief Dr. Pierce and I respect that so I don't think that I'm gonna take a job here after all.
Maggie: What? You're going back to Germany?
Teddy: (Sighs) I think it's obvious you will never like me as a colleague or a friend and I didn't work this hard so I can work under a young woman who hates me. I want my kid to have two parents but I shouldn't be the only one to make compromises that affect my career. I will talk to Owen and see if we can come up with another plan.
Maggie: Okay let me know how it goes and…this department would be lucky to have you back in any capacity.
Teddy: Thank you.
(Teddy turns to leave when another thought comes to mind and she turns to Maggie)
Teddy: I have another thought and it's about Amber Karev.
Maggie: (Scoffs) Don't worry I'll make sure she's buried in scut for a month after what happened in the O.R.
Teddy: No, I'm not saying you should punish her I'm saying you should put her on your service and teach her about cardiothoracic surgery.
Maggie: (Shocked) Really? Were you in that O.R. or was it a clone I don't know about? She disrespected me and you today and told us what to do like she was in charge. I would think you would be pissed too.
Teddy: Pierce I know you found her disrespectful there but I found her inspiring because she did what we should've done in that O.R. she did what needed to be done. If she didn't yell at us and get Kayla in there Frank would be dead because we let our personal conflict get in the way of our jobs. I've taught one other resident who was as blunt as Amber and she is currently heading one of the best cardiothoracic programs in the world. I know when I see potential Dr. Pierce and I think that Amber has it, I can't teach her but you can. I'm gonna go see Owen let me know how Frank turns out.
(Teddy leaves the floor as Maggie processes her suggestion)
LATER THAT NIGHT IN THE CCU
(Amber checks Franks vitals who is still visibly upset)
Amber: Any shortness of breath?
(Frank shakes his head)
Amber: Mr. Jensen, I'm sorry but at the time there was no other-
Frank: Option I know. But it doesn't make it feel right. Do you even think about God's will or just your own? Do you know Deuteronomy 11:13?
Kayla: "And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and all your soul."
(Frank looks at Kayla who slowly walks into the room with Amber standing back)
Kayla: You entrusted me to watch over your soul but I couldn't do that if it was gonna kill you. Your alive because I didn't want to go through life without my father there…I misplaced my faith. I didn't serve God today I served myself and I am sorry for disappointing you…but I have to believe that God capable of insurmountable love is also capable of forgiveness if we ask it.
(Frank is silent for a moment before he holds his hand out to his daughter who gratefully takes it. Amber leaves them to pray together)
Maggie: How is he?
Amber: His vitals are stable and his BP is steady.
Maggie: That's good. You should go home I'll get a nurse to watch over him.
Amber: (Tries to save her career) Dr. Pierce I wanted to apologize for my outburst in the O.R. today it was-
Maggie: It was brave. Not many interns would stand up to their attendings for the sake of the patient. What you did was disrespectful but it was also necessary so that Kayla can have her father in her life, so…you did good today.
Amber: (Eyes wide) Thank you.
Maggie: But if you ever do that again I'm going to put you on B-team for a month got it?
Amber: Yes ma'am.
Maggie: Good because I want to assign you to my service for a while.
Amber: (Shocked) …What? You want me on cardio? Is this a punishment of some sort?
Maggie: Not at all. Dr. Altman believes that you have potential in my department and I want to see if she's right. As much as I disdain her personally, I trust her judgement in potential cardio surgeons. I have a mitral valve repair tomorrow at 8 so you can show me if she's right then, don't be late.
Amber: (Elated) I-I won't thank you so much I won't let you down.
Maggie: You better not. Oh, Bailey just had a birthday party back home, do you want to come? Hopefully there's some cake left.
(Amber is about to say yes when she gets a text from Andrew that says, 'Just flew solo, on a high, want to help me celebrate?')
Amber: Um I wish I could but Levi and I have plans tonight and I'm probably gonna be home late. Save me some cake please.
Maggie: I'll try but no promises.
(Amber runs to the lockers where she and Taryn see Levi standing in front of a mirror crying)
Amber: Explain.
Casey: He's trying to touch his eyeball.
Taryn: Why?
Levi: Because I want to look as different as I feel.
(Levi continues to struggle)
Taryn: Do you want me to do it?
Levi: Yes please.
(Taryn helps Levi with his contacts)
Amber: It looks like you got this so I am gonna go home. Send me pics of Schmitt 2.0.
LATER AT ANDREWS APARTMENT
(Amber knocks on the door and an energetic Andrew pulls her in and starts to kiss her)
Amber: (Pulls back) Um hi. I just heard you flew solo today.
Andrew: Yep, I did a subtotal colectomy by myself.
(Andrew lifts Amber on top of the kitchen counter who laughs and continues making out with him)
Amber: I heard Hunt was paralyzed is that true?
Andrew: Yeah, he was accidentally injected with a paralytic and I had to take over. Your brother even said that he was impressed I got it right all the way to the end.
(Andrew trails kisses on Amber's neck causing her to moan in pleasure)
Amber: I have good news too. Pierce is gonna put me on cardio with her.
Andrew: (Pauses kissing) As a punishment? (Resumes kissing)
Amber: No, she says Altman thinks I have potential and wants to see if it's true. If I knew yelling at attendings was gonna get me in on cool surgeries I would've done it on day 1. Still, that's nothing compared to your first solo. Congrats.
Andrew: (Pauses kissing and looks at Amber) I think I finally found it.
Amber: Found what?
Andrew: My specialty, I'm gonna declare general.
Amber: Whoa slow down cowboy, it was just one surgery-
Andrew: I felt more alive in that one surgery than I did in neuro or cardio or trauma. When I did that surgery, it felt right like that subtotal colectomy was mine from the beginning. I had that woman's intestines in my hands and I just took it and ran with it like…like I was born to do it you know? I'm not just choosing general surgery Amber, it's choosing me.
(Amber gives Andrew a look)
Andrew: What?
Amber: (Lustful) I have never been more turned on by you.
Andrew: (Smiling lustfully) Really?

(Amber leans in whispers her idea to Andrew whose eyes widen in shock. Amber leans back and grins)
Amber: What do you say?
Andrew: (Gulps) I like the way you think She-Karev.
(They make out again when they hear the doorbell ring causing them to groan)
Andrew: Just ignore it they'll go away.
(They make out more until the doorbell rings again making Amber get off the counter)
Amber: I'll get rid of them while you get ready.
Andrew: (Chuckles) I'll meet you in the bedroom.
(Amber smacks Andrew's butt as he rushes off. Amber runs to the door and opens it)
Amber: Sorry we're-
(Amber is shocked to see Sam Bello on the other side of the door who also looks at Amber shocked that she's in Andrew's apartment)
Andrew: Hey babe who is it?
(Andrew appears in the hall and sees Sam outside in front of Amber. All three of them look at each other frozen in shock)
