Chapter 24: The Fog Part 1
SCENE: CARDIO FLOOR
(Amber enters the cardio floor at dawn desperate for patients)
Teddy: Hey, what are you doing here so early?
Amber: Oh, I just…wanted to help as much as I can. I know that Kari Donnelly had to have a bronchoscopy which might interfere with her gaining mobility and changing the future of medicine. So, I want to help if I can with Pierce out…camping. It still feels weird in my mouth.
Teddy: Well, when you love someone, you want to try things that make them happy. I mean it's kind of like Andrew watching those horror movies you love so much because he wants to be happy with you.
Amber: (Sighs) So Kari Donnelly?
Teddy: I'm sorry Karev but Qadri is on my service today, you're on scut today.
Amber: (Groans) Great.
(They both run into Nico as they walk down the hall still sporting the black eye. Amber is astonished at how much damage she did)
Amber: Oh my god.
Nico: (Glares at Amber) Didn't know your own strength did you John Cena? You know I could've pressed charges against you, assault doesn't really look good on resumes, does it? Just ask your brother.
Amber: (Mockingly chuckles) You know it's like you're begging me to give you a matching set. If you want another black eye, just say so.
Teddy: Uh Karev maybe you should get to work on that scut.
Amber: Fine, try not getting punched today I know how hard you try to.
(Amber walks past Nico who mockingly grins at her. She gets into an elevator that Sam is also using)
Amber: I hate him.
Sam: (Looking at her phone) Good morning to you too. Who do we hate this week?
Amber: Kim, it's like he's trying to piss off everyone. He acts like he's the victim here.
Sam: Well, you did punch him in the face.
Amber: He asked for it! I thought you would agree with me considering that he verbally assaulted you in the middle of the floor and made fun of one of the worst traumas in my life and there were a lot.
Sam: I mean…I wouldn't assault the guy but that's just because I don't want to get deported again. What are you doing on the cardio floor? Aren't you on the pit?
Amber: I was but Pierce is out of town and Altman is in charge so I'm off the pit for now. Which is bad because Andrew is on peds and the pit is the furthest away from him that I need to get. Why are you on your phone so much?
Sam: (Still looking at phone) Shepherd is writing her research paper on the stem cells and is gonna put my name on it. I'm refreshing the medical site every five seconds so I could see my name being mentioned in a frontier procedure that could cure paralysis. (Smiles) I'm so excited.
Amber: Clearly because you're smiling very creepy like a serial killer.
Sam: Okay back to you and Andrew, things are still bad?
Amber: They were but now their super awkward like mind numbingly awkward ever since he…
Sam: He what?
Amber: (Groans) He told me he loved me.
(Sam finally looks up her phone with wide eyes from shock)
Sam: What? He told you the three words?
Amber: Oh yeah in a very romantic and corny scene that would put Nora Ephron to shame.
Sam: What did you say?
Amber: You know what it's not important I mean what's the point in hashing it out?
Sam: (Serious) What did you say?
Amber: I uh I said thank you.
Sam: (Incredulous) Thank you? The guy professes his love for you and you say thank you?
Amber: What was I supposed to do?
Sam: (Duh tone) Oh I don't know? Kiss him.
Amber: He completely surprised me, I was already in the deep end that night and he just pushed me into the abyss.
Sam: You know when someone tells you they love you, you don't usually compare it to being pushed off a cliff.
Amber: (Groans) I'm such a mess. I just-I don't know what to say to him so I'm trying my hardest to avoid him until I can get my feelings sorted.
(The elevator doors open revealing Andrew who is surprised at Amber in the elevator)
Andrew: Oh um hi I was just-
Sam: (Seeing this as a sign) Andrew, come in there's plenty of room
(Amber glares at Sam while Andrew gets in the elevator)
Andrew: Um actually I was looking for you. Shepherd wanted me to find you and give you the latest chart on Kari and to meet her in the lab. I'm just gonna-
(Andrew turns to leave but the door closes confining the three of them together)
Andrew: (Sighs) Ride this elevator with the two of you. Great.
(They all ride the elevator awkwardly until it stops at the lobby. Amber walks out of it quickly)
Amber: (Muttering) Why do you hate me God?
(Amber groans and spots Levi wearing a fleece jacket talking to Webber. She heads to them)
Amber: Hey, what's with the jacket? Are you going on a field trip?
Levi: Something like that.
Webber: We were able to find a blood donor for Gus. Her name is Frances, she's the only match in the world and is flying in from London. Schmitt is going to pick her up.
Amber: (Eager) Can I come?
Webber: (Looks at her) It's not surgery Amber, it's just going to the airport and back.
Amber: It's not though, it's a rescue mission. Gus is getting sicker by the minute because his blood is so rare. We've called every hospital and blood organization in the world trying to find one match for him and after weeks we finally did. There is no other golden blood donor this woman is a unicorn; she needs to be treated as such. Do you feel comfortable leaving a unicorn at the hands of an intern who may I remind you dropped his glasses in an open body in the O.R.?
Levi: (Insulted) That was a long time ago. I'm perfectly capable of driving to and from the airport Dr. Webber.
Webber: …Do you have any surgeries today?
Amber: I'm on scut today I'll do it when I get back, I promise.
Webber: Fine, you can go with Schmitt to the airport and bring the unicorn back here.
Levi: (Muttering) Unbelievable.
Amber: (Grins) Let me get my jacket.
(Amber leaves to grab her jacket from the lockers)
LATER INSIDE THE TOWN CAR
(Amber and Levi sit inside the car quietly as the chauffeur drives)
Levi: I'm not an invalid you know? I am perfectly capable of driving to the airport and back while keeping a woman intact. I'm not even driving I'm just guarding a woman and making sure that she…doesn't get drained.
Amber: (Chuckles) Drained?
Levi: I don't know what other word to use. The point is you didn't have to come with me to get one woman to the hospital, I know you and Nico think I can't handle something so simple but I can.
Amber: I know you can I'm not doing it because I think you'll screw it up I'm doing it because…I want to avoid Andrew.
Levi: Why? What did he do?
Amber: He didn't do anything he just…told me he loved me and I told him thank you in return.
Levi: (Eyes wide) Okay yeah you definitely should come with me.
Amber: (Surprised) Really? No judgement whatsoever?
Levi: None. I mean you responded a hell of a lot better than Nico did after I went all romantic on him. He just- (Sighs) I don't know what I'm doing wrong to make him this angry at me. I mean I know I can be annoying but I never get this much of a bad response, what is wrong with me?
Amber: There is nothing wrong with you.
Levi: (Scoffs) Nico clearly doesn't think it.
Amber: Screw Nico! If I could punch him in the face again I would.
Levi: Amber-
Amber: No listen to me, okay? I am gonna be real with you for one minute as your best friend because you need it. Levi you are a great guy, maybe the best guy I know. Yes, you can be annoying but you know what else you are? Your sweet and cute and funny and not in a sarcastic mean way I mean genuinely funny. You are there for the people you care about even when their being total pricks to you. You think that there's only one guy for you but there isn't, if you go out there, there are gonna be a swarm of queer guys around you. I'm speaking as someone who's been in the Kinsey scale longer than you. If Nico can't appreciate you for the fantastic guy that you are then find someone who does. Real minute is over now.
Levi: …That was the nicest thing you've ever said to me.
Amber: I know, I may have many and I mean many flaws but being real is not one of them.
(The car stops. They look outside and see they're in the warehouse)
Levi: We're here.
Amber: Let's hurry up Gus doesn't have a lot of time.
(They get out and wait for Frances to come down but she stands in front of the door shaking as an Indian man tries to calm her)
Amber: What is happening?
Levi: Her therapist told us that Frances is severely agoraphobic, before today she hasn't left her house in like ten years.
Amber: Yikes, well hopefully she can get down before the new year comes. Come on Frances.
(They stand by the car waiting for Frances to take the first step down)
MEANWHILE AT THE PEDS FLOOR
(Andrew goes through the chart in Gabby's room while she's sleeping when Teddy walks in)
Teddy: Dr. DeLuca, I was wondering if you knew where She-Karev is? I may need her to assist me in case Kari's CT shows she needs surgery.
Andrew: Um I don't really know where she is. She's not in the pit or cardio?
Teddy: No I looked there.
(Alex walks inside the room)
Alex: Hey, how's she doing?
Andrew: She's good she's just asleep.
Teddy: Karev, do you know where your sister is? I want her on my service.
Alex: Uh she and Schmitt went to the airport to get Frances, the blood donor for Gus.
Teddy: You finally found a blood donor? That's great, I can scrub in as soon as the blood arrives.
Alex: What about Pierce?
Teddy: She's taking the day off to go camping with Avery.
Andrew: Maggie's going camping? Why does that sound bad?
Alex: Because it's Maggie.
Teddy: I'll put an O.R. on standby.
(Teddy leaves the two men alone)
Andrew: So, Amber just left? She left the hospital to drive a woman to the hospital.
Alex: Yep.
Andrew: (Scoffs) Of course she did. She wants to avoid me at all costs.
Alex: Why would she avoid you? What did you do?
Andrew: Oh, you know I just spilled my heart to her, told her I loved her and stood there like an idiot when she walked away after saying thank you. Does that about explain it?
Alex: Yeah, I think so. I'll let you know when she comes back.
Andrew: Their playing chauffeur for a woman, how long could they possible be?
FORTY FIVE MINUTES LATER
(Amber and Levi stand near the car in boredom as Frances makes it the fourth step down)
Amber: It's like watching a baby turtle go back to the sea in slow motion. Are all golden blood people like this or is she just especially crazy?
Levi: Try not to call her crazy when she comes here.
Amber: We'll probably be skeletons by then so it won't matter.
Levi: I'm gonna update Dr. Karev.
(Levi calls Alex and puts him on speaker)
Alex: (On phone) Go, Schmitt.
Levi: We are almost on the ground.
Alex: Wait. You said they'd landed.
Levi: Sorry, I meant-I meant she. She is almost on the ground. She's just really scared.
Amber: More like terrified she's three steps away from being on solid ground.
Levi: Her agoraphobia is way worse than we thought. I mean, s-s-she seems like she's afraid of the air.
(Frances shakily goes down one step holding onto her therapist tightly)
Amber: We're almost there Alex.
Levi: Okay, hold on. Hold on.
(Frances finally lands one foot on the ground causing Amber and Levi to raise their fist in the air in success)
Levi: We're good. Eagle has landed. (Chuckles)
Amber: Don't call her an eagle.
Agent: Sir, wait right there.
(Custom agents walk to Dr. Safavi)
Levi: Uh, wait, wait. Something's happening.
(Amber and Levi rush to the plane)
Alex: What do you mean?
Levi: Uh, is-is there a problem?
Dr. Safavi: It appears there's a question about my visa.
Agent: Come with us, please.
Levi: Oh, I-But he-
Amber: You can't just take him she needs him to get to the hospital a child's life is at stake!
Agent: Ma'am you need to step out of the way.
Amber: What-
(Levi holds her back to prevent her from making a mistake that could get her arrested)
Dr. Safavi: (Being taken away) It will be all right, Frances! Keep breathing!
Levi: Customs is taking her therapist.
Alex: Guy's listen to me. You need to get Frances here now.
Amber: Okay, come on Levi.
(They run to a panicking Frances)
Amber: Hi Frances, there's nothing to worry about. I'm Dr. Karev and this is Dr. Schmitt we're here to take you to the hospital if you could just follow us-
Frances: (Panicking) I should like to go home now. I have to go home.
(Frances runs back in the plane)
Amber: Wait please-
Levi: Wait. W-W-Wait. Uh...
(They run inside to follow Frances)
Alex: Schmitt.
Levi: Oh, she's back on the plane! I got to go!
(Levi hangs up and he and Amber go in to find Frances curled up in a chair singing)
Frances: Jitterburg Jitterburg Jitterburg Jitterburg
(Amber sits in front of Frances and tries to talk to her while she sings)
Amber: Ms. Pinfield I know your scared but time is of the essence right now. We need you to come with us to the hospital so you can donate your blood today, right now.
Frances: But something's bugging you Something ain't right My best friend told me what you did last night
(Levi gets anxious and paces the small plane stroking the roof)
Amber: Gus is severely anemic and his thymoma gland is getting worse, he could have a stroke or a cardiac arrest any minute now. Transfusing your blood into him is the first step to his recovery.
(Frances continues singing causing Amber to groan in frustration while Levi continues pacing)
Frances: Wake me up before you go-go I'm not planning on going solo
Levi: (Sighs) Frances, I am begging you. (Sits down) Literally, I am begging you.
Frances: I'm sorry. The singing helps. Dr. Safavi says it helps my mind to focus.
Levi: I'm not talking about the singing. A kid is dying.
Frances: I don't want to miss you when you hit that high
(Levi groans with Amber)
LATER IN RADIOLOGY
(Andrew shows Gabby how the MRI works before she goes in. Alex walks in)
Alex: Hey Gabby. What's going on?
Andrew: Hey. Just showing Gabby how the MRI works. (Quietly) How's Jo?
Alex: No idea. Mer's still over there.
Andrew: Is Amber back yet?
Alex: (Sighs) No there was a complication, Frances is scared to death so they're still there. I sent Hunt over there to get the blood.
Andrew: (Sad) At least Amber got as much time away from here and me as she can.
Gabby: There she is!
(The computer shows scans of Gabby's stuffed cat)
Andrew: She's a little scared about the MRI, so I said we'd test it on her little kitty, Perla, first. Right?
Alex: (Impressed) You should be in peds.
(Alex leaves the room)
LATER IN THE PLANE
(Amber and Levi sit on the couch waiting for Owen to arrive)
Levi: How much time do you think Gus has?
Amber: Assuming he doesn't go into cardiac arrest I'd say a day or two. Which is not enough time for us to get her out of here. Where the hell is Hunt?
(Owen gets inside the plane)
Levi: Dr. Hunt? Oh, Dr. Hunt is here. Thank God. Frances, this is the very terrific Dr. Hunt. Come on Amber lets go in the back while they talk.
Amber: (Relieved) Right behind you.
(Amber and Levi walk to the seats in the back)
Owen: Hello, Frances-
Frances: Did you happen to see Dr. Safavi? He's my therapist.
Owen: Uh, I think it's gonna take a while.
Frances: He's lovely. Been working with me for about two years now. "Exposure therapy," he calls it. We go outside, little bits by bits, to the garden, to the curb, then we did a corner shop.
Owen: Oh, so you went shopping, Frances?
Frances: No. Just stood there. Had a bit of a panic. Had a little fall down once, but I got to the point where I could do minutes and then go home. And then…then I got a phone call, and they said, "You could help someone with your blood, but you have to travel on two planes across the sea to another country." And I went to Dr. Safavi, and I said, "Do you think I'm ready for that?" And do you know what he said?
Owen: (Preps the kit) No.
Frances: Nothing. Not a sound. He just gaped at me with his mouth open, as if he'd forgotten all the words for "No," but I said, "I want to help, if I can." And I truly did, (Voice breaking) but it appears, I'm so sorry. It appears that he was right. It appears I can't. I'm so sorry.
Owen: Ma'am, it is okay. We have this all figured out, and I-I'm just gonna take your blood right here, and then you can just stay here-
Frances: (Scared) You are not sticking me with that.
Owen: (Confused) You flew all this way to donate your blood. What did you think was gonna-
Frances: In hospital. Not on a tiny, little aeroplane.
(Amber and Levi look at each other incredulous over the woman)
Frances: You could stab me wrong. I could bleed to death.
Owen: Ma'am-
Frances: There's no one to give me any blood. I could catch a hideous infection.
Owen: Frances-
Frances: You could send an air bubble into my brain that pops and makes my eyes go wonky. I read about that.
Owen: Ma'am, ma'am, please-
Frances: No, no, no, no, no.
Owen: Ma'am, please-
Frances: (Panicking) I never should have come. Please don't kill me. (Pants) Wake me up before you go-go
(Owen looks at Amber and Levi. Amber mouths 'I know' and Levi shrugs with an annoyed look on their faces)
Amber: (Whispering) This is great. I try to avoid my boyfriend and now I'm stuck on an airplane with a lunatic.
Levi: Mm-hmm.
MEANWHILE IN GABBYS ROOM
(Andrew plays dollies with Gabby who smiles and laughs at his voices. Alex comes in the room)
Alex: Hey DeLuca can I talk to you outside for a minute?
Andrew: Uh yeah, sure. I'll be right back Gabby.
(Andrew gets up and follows Alex outside Gabby's room)
Andrew: What's up? Is Amber, okay?
Alex: She's fine although I'm pretty sure Frances is driving her crazy with her agoraphobia. I just…I wanted to talk to you about why she didn't say I love you back.
Andrew: You don't have to explain for her if she sent you here.
Alex: I'm not and believe me I don't want to get in the middle of my sisters love life but someone has to speak for her because she certainly can't especially when it comes to stuff like this. I want to explain why Amber didn't say it back so you can understand and see it from her point of view.
Andrew: (Crosses arms) Okay.
Alex: Amber and I grew up rough, our dad abandoned us and our mom couldn't take care of us so we had to take care of ourselves. The only marriage we grew up with consisted of beatings and fights that hospitalized our mom so our views on marriage weren't exactly fairy tale.
Andrew: I know that and I understand that better than you think, my parents nearly killed each other before they divorced. I'm just…I'm just wondering if she has those feelings for me even if it's just a little bit.
Alex: (Sighs) She probably does but she's scared to feel them or act on them. There were three people in her life that she loved, me, Aaron and mom and we all failed or disappointed her. You already know that our mother screwed her up more than we can count. I left her when she was ten years old to a schizophrenic mother because I didn't want to be saddled with a kid that wasn't mine. And our brother had a psychotic break that led her to the hospital with a knife in her stomach. It doesn't take a genius to guess that someone who's been through what she's been through probably see's love as a path to destruction. It's not her fault, she's just a product of what she grew up with.
Andrew: (Sighs) So what do I do? Tell me what to do.
Alex: Just…let her see that loving you isn't gonna destroy her. If she knows that then maybe she'll start to love you or hell maybe even tell you if she does. I gotta go I need to update Gus's mom on her husband's broken butt.
Andrew: Okay, wait a broken butt?
(Alex grins as he leaves for Gus's room)
LATER IN THE AIRPLANE
(Levi and Amber are in the back getting coffee from the flight attendant's station. Owen tries to talk to Frances)
Levi: (Looks at the coffee pot Amber holds) Do you think that pot is strong enough to knock her out?
Amber: (Chuckles) Damn I'm usually the one who makes comments like that in this situation, you must be as cranky as me.
(Amber pours them both a cup and she gets a text from Alex)
Amber: Damn it.
Levi: What?
Amber: Gus had a heart attack. They brought him back but he needs the blood now.
Levi: You hold her down and I'll stick the needle in.
Amber: As tempting as that is, I got away with assault once I don't think a second time is gonna come. Let's just let Hunt talk to her and hope she can either listen or shut down long enough to sneak a needle in her vein.
(They drink their coffee silently for a moment before Levi speaks)
Levi: Can I ask you something?
Amber: Does it look like I'm going anywhere?
Levi: Why didn't you just say it back? Why didn't you say I love you too?
Amber: (Shakes her head) I don't know, maybe it's because I never have. I never said I love you to anyone before except for my brothers.
Levi: (Nods) Do you love him?
Amber: (Sighs) I don't know, maybe I do. How do you know?
Levi: I think you just do.
Amber: …What about you? What are you gonna do about your messy love life?
Levi: I think that your right. I should be treated better by someone I love; I have given Nico every chance I could and he needs to know there's a limit. I'm not gonna be a doormat anymore.
Amber: (Ruffles his hair affectionately) I'm proud of you Levi.
Levi: Hopefully we get out before Nico finishes his fellowship.
Amber: I think we'll be here until we finish our residency. Let's get back to the golden blood donor from hell.
(Levi groans and they head back to the front with their coffee. Frances is curled up in the chair with Owen talking to her)
Owen: We have pills. We have shots. Simple sedatives.
Frances: But I've never taken them. What if I have an allergic reaction? And we're not in a hospital where you can treat it.
Owen: Listen, the chances of that are very-
Frances: Are they none at all?
Owen: (Sighs) Frances, I hate to suggest this, but...maybe if you put the blanket over your head between here and the car, then we can just-
Frances: I can't leave here. I can't.
Levi: You can, though.
Frances: I can't. I can't.
Levi: (Matter of fact) You can because you promised.
(Amber looks at Levi surprised by his coldness)
Owen: Schmitt.
Levi: There is no other golden blood donor. You are a unicorn, you are Bigfoot, and you said yes. And now you can't just decide you don't want to.
Amber: Levi.
Owen: (Stands up and pulls Levi back) Schmitt, Schmitt, come here. Come here.
Levi: (Angry) Someone's going to die here.
Owen: Schmitt!
Frances: I could die!
(They all stop and look at Frances)
Frances: I was taught, from a little girl, that my body is like a china cup, and I mustn't ever, ever break it. And I know, well, part of me knows that I'm not gonna break into pieces if I walk down to the corner shop or if I go to the cinema. But there's another part that knows that, if I do, if I hurt myself, if I bleed, I will die, and no one can help me. That part won't allow it. And that part always wins. I'm sorry. I want to help, but I can't.
Owen: But you want to.
Frances: I came all this way.
Owen: I have an idea, something that might help.
Amber: What is it?
Owen: I'm calling Karev.
(Owen facetimes Alex who answers)
Owen: Hey, Dr. Karev. This is Frances.
Frances: (Weakly) Hello.
Owen: Can, uh Frances would like to meet Gus.
Alex: Yeah, right here.
(Alex turns the phone to Gus and Lori)
Owen: Frances is frightened, deeply frightened to make the trip from this airplane to the hospital.
Lori: (Voice breaking) Frances, thank you for, um…My son can't talk right now because he had a heart attack. (Breathes sharply) He's only 10 years old, but his heart stopped…because there's not enough b-blood in his body.
(Lori sobs as Frances starts to sob. Amber and Levi stand back and wait anxiously for her answer)
Owen: Frances, I know what it's like to be paralyzed by something that hasn't happened yet and probably won't, but it feels so true that it's gonna end you. But what's killing this little boy is very real, and you can fight that. That's what you came here to do, so let me help you do it. And you will not break. I will lift you up, and I will carry you. I served four tours in Iraq, so there's no one better qualified to protect you, Frances, and I will, okay? I promise.
(Frances breathes shakily for a moment before pulling the blanket behind her over her head. Levi and Amber exhale in relief and quickly grab Frances's bags)
Owen: We're on our way.
(Owen hangs up the phone and carefully carries Frances)
Frances: Oh, my!
Owen: Let's go.
(The four of them rush to the car)
LATER AT THE HOSPITAL
(Andrew stands outside the conference room where Bailey and Catherine are talking to men in suits. Meredith and Jo go up to him)
Andrew: Hey.
Meredith: Hey. I need to talk to Bailey.
Andrew: I would not do that. They've been in there all day dealing with some kind of-
Taryn: (Sing song voice) Drama.
Meredith: Okay, well, whatever drama it is can wait. I need to speak to her.
Jo: No, no, no. I-I can wait. I can wait until she's done, and then I can fill her in. If you talk to Alex, I'll talk to Bailey.
Meredith: Andrew, can you, uh, stay with Jo, please?
Andrew: Yeah, of course.
Meredith: Okay. Don't leave her side. It's important.
Andrew: Okay.
(Meredith leaves the two of them. Jo looks at Andrew curious over what Alex told her)
Jo: Do you love her?
Andrew: Alex told you?
Jo: Do you?
Andrew: Who wouldn't?
(Andrew's phone chimes)
Jo: Oh, what's that?
Andrew: Bailey.
(They look at the conference room where Bailey stands up and signals him to come him)
Jo: You should go in there.
Andrew: I-No. No, no. Meredith said to stay with you. I mean-
Jo: No, I'm fine. I can wait here. Dude, what did you do?
Andrew: I don't know!
Jo: Go. Go!
(Andrew goes inside the room)
Bailey: Close the door and have a seat, please, Dr. DeLuca.
(Andrew closes the door and sits across from Bailey and Catherine)
Bailey: On the 2nd of this month, Amber Karev worked in the clinic. Is that correct?
Andrew: Um, I'd have to check, but yeah. I'm sure your records are right.
Bailey: Okay and on that day, she treated one Gabrielle Rivera?
Andrew: Um I mean she helped Dr. Alex Karev on a peds case so I suppose that's who you're talking about.
Catherine: And did she discuss the procedure with you at all? Did she mention how it was paid for?
Andrew: (Confused) No, to be honest I don't know why you're asking me this and not Amber.
Bailey: Dr. Karev is currently on her way back from the airport to bring a blood donor who is Rh-null. Until she gets here, we need you to tell us if she told you anything concerning Gabriella Rivera given that you two are currently in a relationship.
Andrew: I'm sorry I don't have anything to tell you. Amber hasn't told me anything concerning Gabby we're uh…having relationship problems and are currently not talking.
Catherine: Why is that Dr. DeLuca? What relationship problems have caused you not to talk to each other?
Andrew: (Flustered) Uh it's kind of complicated.
Bailey: Dr. DeLuca we need to know exactly why you and Amber Karev are not talking so that we can know for sure that she hasn't discussed what happened on May 2nd, so talk.
Andrew: (Sighs) A few weeks ago her sister-in-law Jo blurted out that I used to be in love with her, Jo. She…did not like it so she wanted to take a break from us, we didn't talk or see each other until the night of the second. On that night I approached her in the parking lot and declared my love for her in hopes she would take me back instead she said thank you and drove away. We haven't talked after that; she avoids me as much as she can to the point of driving to another part of town to pick up a woman. So, no we haven't talked about Gabby because we haven't talked at all on that day or these past 18 days. Does that about cover it?
Bailey: …Thank you Dr. DeLuca, we will wait for Amber Karev to arrive back and ask her questions regarding that day.
Andrew: I-I'm sorry. W-What is this all about?
Catherine: Dr. DeLuca, these people are inspectors from the Olympia United Medical Group. They provide your insurance and that of every employee at Grey-Sloan Memorial. It has come to light that Dr. Meredith Grey submitted her own daughter's name to pay for Gabriella's surgery and care, which is both a fraud and a felony. It is on record that Amber Karev was on the case that day so we need to hear from her how this happened.
(Andrew looks at them in shock and immediately worries about Amber)
Catherine: You may go Dr. DeLuca, thank you for your time.
Andrew: (Calmly) Of course.
(Andrew walks out of the room calmly until he is out of view and runs to find Alex)
MEANWHILE ON THE HIGHWAY
(Amber sits in the passenger seat. Levi and Owen sit in the back with Frances who continues singing)
Frances: We'll stay home instead Boom, boom, boom, boom
Driver: Damn this traffic. And now we've got fog rolling in.
Owen: Should we come off here? I mean, would Mercer be any faster or...
Driver: (Chuckles) Funny.
Frances: Wake me up before you go-go 'Cause I'm not planning on going solo (Levi joins in) Wake me up before you go-go
(Amber looks at Levi and rolls her eyes as he continues)
Both: I don't want to miss it when you hit that hiiiigh
Amber: (Flatly) I should've stayed at the hospital.
Owen: Yep.
LATER IN THE HYPERBARIC CHAMBER ROOM
(Andrew runs inside the room and finds Alex and Meredith inside the chamber. He presses on the microphone)
Andrew: (Angry) Did she do this?
Alex: DeLuca we really can't talk right now, Gus is in oxygen debt and-
Andrew: (Angry) I don't care! Did Amber have anything to do with this?!
Meredith: Do with what?
Andrew: With putting your daughter's name on the insurance forms, did she?
Alex: (Looks at Meredith worriedly) W-Where did you hear that?
Andrew: It's what the meeting in the conference room is about, insurance fraud. Alex tell me that Amber had nothing to do with this.
Meredith: She didn't DeLuca.
Andrew: (Not believing her) I want to hear it from the man who raised my girlfriend.
Meredith: Let's just calm down.
Andrew: (Scared for Amber and angry) The woman I love might be going to prison so I will not calm down. Now tell me the truth.
Alex: …She had nothing to do with this.
Andrew: Did she know and not tell anyone?
Alex: No, she thought it was insurance fraud but I assured her that it was a technical error. I wouldn't let my sister go down for something she didn't commit, you know that DeLuca.
Andrew: (Relieved slightly) You swear she had nothing to do with this?
Alex: I swear. DeLuca, I wouldn't do anything to hurt Amber again, you know that. I promise she is not gonna lose her job and she is not going to jail.
Andrew: You better be right. I want your acceptance but I am not above kicking your ass if you did something to tank everything Amber has worked too hard to gain. Keep that in mind.
(Andrew walks out of the room with Alex and Meredith still inside)
Alex: (Impressed) I actually think he's just right for my sister.
Meredith: Did he just say, 'the woman I love'?
Alex: Yeah, it's a whole thing. I'll explain it to you later if we get out of this mess you created.
LATER ON THE HIGHWAY
(Amber, Levi and Owen are anxious to get to the hospital but the traffic and fog slows them down)
Amber: What is taking so long? Is the president in town?
Levi: Is it possible we're going slower?
Owen: Can we pick it up, please? This is an emergency.
Driver: Sorry, but if you can see better through this fog, you should drive.
Amber: (Glares at driver)
(Levi rolls down the window and the fog shocks them)
Levi: Oh, my God.
Owen: I've never seen it like this. Close the window, Schmitt.
Frances: Do you mind keeping it open? It reminds me of home. Mornings in autumn when the fog comes in. Feels like everything's cushioned, softer. The world feels safer. It's actually my favorite-
(The tires screech and they suddenly stop scaring them)
Owen: What the hell was that?
(They suddenly hear cars crashing nearby. Amber jumps at the sounds)
Levi: Oh my god! Oh my god!
Amber: (Scared) What's happening?!
(The crashing continues and the car shakes causing Frances to scream)
Owen: They can't see. They don't know to stop. They can't see!
(Owen opens the door to get out)
Amber: Don't!
Levi: No wait! Don't get out!
(Owen closes the door as a truck drives past the door. More crashes are heard and the car keeps shaking as Frances continues to scream)
