Yoshi's Jazzy College Visit

AUTHOR'S NOTES: As I've said in previous chapters and stories from the Nagatoro-verse, the most enigmatic character to write for remains, without a doubt, Yoshi. She is a twin-tailed enigma, and her Iago the Parrot-like mannerisms in her role as sidekick to Gamo seem to have frustrated my fellow authors, who can't seem to figure out what to make of the Toro-Fam's bubbly Blonde Speed demon.
At times she's portrayed as having hidden her own intelligence in exchange for being part of Hayase's Posse(apologies for the unintended pun), while for others, she's a Mary Sue in disguise. One thing is clear, she is a sponge of information, and will most likely be the one who has cultivated all of the Toro-Fam's friends and contacts into her smartphone. But away from the girls, what does Yoshi like?
For this little story, I am sending Yoshi off on a college visit, where she finds a quaint little coffee shop that seems to speak to her inner peace. That is until she meets a certain member of the staff, who reminds her of someone close to her and then all bets are off. So please enjoy Yoshi's little adventure into potential College Life.
Yoshi Yamasaki stepped off the bus with a number of students from Kazehaya High School who expressed an interest in attending this particular university in Tokyo. While each of the students found their way to hosts and guides who represented the various departments at the college, Yoshi wandered about looking around. This was one of the rare times that she was without her girlfriends, Gamo, Hayase, and Sakura. And the campus felt intimidating to her.
"What am I doing here? I can't handle this on my own," she said to herself as she looked around fearfully. She took a seat at a bench in the main quad, near where the bus had deposited the students. "I don't know why Mom and Dad want me to go to college, I just don't want to study anymore."
The campus was buzzing as the campus clock tower bell chimed the top of the hour, telling Yoshi there were still hours before she could go home. She was on the verge of tears and a phone call to Senpai back home to ask him to come get her at the train station, when a familiar word echoed across the quad area, snapping Yoshi's fears.
"SENPAI!"
She looked in the direction the shout came and noticed a tall fierce-eyed student stopping and turning around, "What Is it NOW, Hana-Chan?" A petite girl was running towards him, the front of her t-shirt bouncing like a magnitude 7 earthquake was hitting, "You forgot this at Your apartment!" She shouted as she waved a phone case in the air, "You left before I got Up and it was under the pillow!"
The tall student's face turned a bright red, "DUMMY! Keep Your Voice DOWN!: He shouted. Yoshi was shocked, here was a Man just like Senpai, blushing as bad as he did, but part of her also thought, "He left it under her pillow?" Her eyes went wide when she realized they must be dating for her to say such things out loud like that.
"He's Definitely NOT like Senpai," Yoshi thought to herself, suppressing a giggle at an image of Nagatoro running through the halls at school shouting at Senpai that had left his sketching kit at her house the night before that her mind conjured up.
The big-breasted girl got to her boyfriend, handed him the phone and hugged him, "Good luck on the Oral presentation today, Senpai, I'm rooting for you!" There was a moment of shock at the hug, then his arms wrapped around her and a smile washed over his face, "Thanks, Uzaki-Kun, We'll celebrate after work tonight, okay?" She nodded as he kissed her on top of the head, "I'm gonna be late, see you later, Uzaki-kun." She smiled as she waved to him, then exhaled.
Yoshi sat on the bench the whole time, watching the scene unfold, "Wow, it's just like Watching Hayacchi and Senpai, only more shouting and less embarrassment," she thought. She hadn't noticed the girl was looking in her direction then began to come over to her.
"Hi there, you look like you're lost," she said to her with a toothy grin, one Yoshi knew all too well from Hayase. "I'm Hana, what's your name?"
"I-I'm Yoshi, I'm here with some of my classmates on an official college visit, but I don't know if I can do this." Yoshi stammered a bit, but for some reason, the girl seemed familiar, like she reminded her of Gamo and Sakura, if they were fused into a single person.
Hana gasped and grinned, "Oh, I heard that was today! Great, if you want I can show you around, I'm off from classes today and I don't have to work for a couple more hours, why don't I show you around?" she held out her hand to Yoshi. She looked at her hand, took a deep breath and nodded, "Okay, Hana, show me the school, maybe you'll convince me that I can do this." She took her hand and stood up, noting that the girl was as big, breast wise, as her and Gamo-chan, but she was Sakura's height. "Come on, let's go!"
Over the next couple of hours, Hana was the best tour guide, telling Yoshi all about the school and the various major departments. In her conversation with Hana, Yoshi found herself being drawn to the school, even though she still had no idea what she wanted to do for a career.
"Yoshi-Chan, tell me a little about your high school life, maybe we can figure out what you can study in college," Uzaki said as they stopped in the dining hall for a bite to eat.
"Well, I mostly hang out with my friends in the school's Art Club room," Uzaki took a drink from the can of coffee, "Oh you're an artist?" Uzaki asked. Yoshi smiled sheepishly, "No, Senpai let's us hang out there, he and my friend, Hayacchi started dating recently."
Uzaki got a strange look on her face, "Really? You all must be good friends for her to be okay with you hanging out together," she had never heard of someone letting her girlfriends stick around when someone got a boyfriend back in high school.
"Senpai is a friend to all of us, he loves Hyacchi without a doubt, but he cares about the rest of us, he's like the older brother we never had," Yoshi was practically beaming talking about Senpai, something Uzaki understood.
"Ohh, I get it, My Senpai was like that when we were in High School in the swim club," She noticed Yoshi was jotting down some notes. "What are you writing there, Yoshi?" Uzaki asked.
"Oh, this? It's something Senpai suggested I do when I go somewhere interesting, to write what I see and then he tries to sketch what I wrote. So far, he's made some really cool sketches of things I write." She smiled as she looked down at her writing.
"Hey, you know we have a creative writing major here, Yoshi-chan, maybe you can major in that," Uzaki said with that same toothy grin that Yoshi always saw on Hayacchi. She thought about it for a moment, "maybe… I hadn't really thought about it." Yoshi pondered the idea for a minute when Uzaki jumped up.
"Oh! I'm going to be late to work! Want to come with me?" Uzaki was bouncing on her heels, wanting to show her the coffee shop, but Yoshi was still thinking about the idea of becoming a writer. "Oh, wait a minute, if I become a writer and Senpai becomes an illustrator…"
"Yoshi-chan? Yoshi-Chan!" Uzaki's voice snapped her out of her thoughts, "Oh, sorry. I was thinking about what you said about me writing," Yoshi blushed in embarrassment for spacing out like Senpai would. Uzaki grabbed her hand, "Come on, I want to show you my job, you'd be great working there." Yoshi got up and grabbed the notepad and followed her as Uzaki dashed off to the coffee shop.
Ten minutes later, they entered the little coffee shop, and Yoshi felt a different, more relaxed vibe to the place. An older man and young woman stood behind the bar counter greeting the two as they entered, "Hello, Uzaki-chan, who's your friend?" the elderly gentleman asked, in a warm friendly tone that made Yoshi feel at home. "Hello, Asai-Sensei, this is Yoshi, she came to school on an official visit from a high school in Miura." Yoshi waved hello. "Welcome, Yoshi-Chan, have a seat. Please enjoy yourself."
The young woman behind the bar next to Asai-Sensei came over with a menu and a glass of water. "Here's a menu for you, Yoshi-Chan. Feel free to let me know if you would like anything," Uzaki headed into the back room, "Thanks for taking care of Yoshi-chan, Ami-Senpai, I'll be right back."
Yoshi looked through the menu as she noticed the soft jazz music playing in the background. The place felt like her grandfather's study at home, warm and inviting. She relaxed a little as she pulled out the notepad and started writing down some notes.
"So Yoshi-chan, what are you hoping to study if you come here?" Asai-Sensei asked, pushing up his glasses. Yoshi snorted slightly, recognizing the move that Hayacchi's Senpai still did despite now wearing contacts, "I don't have any idea yet, but Uzaki-Senpai seems to think that I might do well in the creative writing course." Ami nodded, "You seem to be a natural at it, Yoshi-chan," motioning to the notepad.
Yoshi blushed, "This is something My own Senpai back at school encouraged me to do," for the first time, she referred to him as "her Senpai," which was technically true for her and her friends, but it was still strange to refer to him as Hers, as if he belonged to her. "He seems to be a very caring Senpai to you, "Ami-San said with a smile as she brought her a cup of coffee.
Yoshi sat back for a moment, "He is very caring to us, Ami-San. He is in a relationship with my friend Hayase, but he looks out for all of us since we all became friends a while ago."
Asai-Sensei and Ami-San looked at each other, seemingly speaking to each other without words. "It is rare to find a Senpai who not only cares about the woman he loves, but the friends who are important to her," he said.
Yoshi sipped on the coffee as the music changed to a famous Japanese Jazz artist. "Sensei, how long have you known Uzaki-Chan? She seems nice, and if I decide to come here, I would love to have her as a friend."
Ami-san and Asai-Sensei smiled at each other. "She started working here a couple years ago, when she was a sophomore, and her Shinichii was a Junior. He works here too while he works on his graduate degree. You'd like him as long as you look past his fierce countenance." Yoshi ordered some of the curry and sat back as Uzaki returned in the coffee shop's uniform. "So Yoshi-chan, what do you think? You think you want to study writing?"
Yoshi smiled, "Are you graduating soon, Uzaki-chan? I would like to have you as a friend if I come here, it would make things easier for me."
Uzaki smiled, "I'm doing a five-year advanced degree in business management, so I have another year here, while my Senpai is working on his graduate degree, we're going to graduate together that way," She grinned sheepishly as she said that. She and Shinichi had decided to pursue that goal on their first anniversary of dating, but hadn't told anyone.
"Uzaki-chan, that's wonderful," Asai-Sensei said. Ami-San nodded. The two have been watching over the couple since the day they met Uzaki, realizing the two were perfect for each other. And watching their relationship grow to what it was today. "I'm happy for you both, Uzaki-chan," Ami-San added.
An alarm went off on Yoshi's phone, "Oh, I need to get back, the bus home will be leaving in 30 minutes." She put down some money for the bill and gave Uzaki a hug, "Thank you, Uzaki-Chan, for helping me figure things out. I hope you'll be my Senpai if I get in, I could use a friend like you." Uzkai returned the hug and smiled, "Of course, but even if you go somewhere else, I would still love to be your friend." They quickly exchanged their contact info and she waved goodbye, passing Shinichi as he walked in, "Hello everyone. Hey Hana, who was that? A friend of yours?" He asked, pointing to Yoshi, who was rapidly shrinking as she ran towards campus.
Uzaki smiled as she hugged her boyfriend, "I think she's going to be my New Kouhai next semester, Shinichi-kun." He looked down at her and smiled, "Oh, cool…"
A couple hours later, Yoshi got off the bus to see Gamo, Sakura, Nagatoro and Senpai all waiting for her, "hey, Yoshi, how'd it go?" Gamo said as she joined them. "Great!" Gamo said. "I met a really cool senior who convinced me that I can do this, and I think I know what I want to study," She smiled as she looked at Senpai. "Huh?" Senpai asked, a bit concerned by Yoshi's look. Nagatoro also saw the look, "What do you want to study, Yoshi?" she said, gripping Senpai's hand a bit too tight, making Senpai grimace. "I'm going to study creative writing!" Despite the pain, Senpai beamed, "That's Great, Yoshi! I think you're gonna do really well!" Nagatoro eased up on her grip, because Senpai was genuinely happy for their friend. "I'm happy for you, Yoshi," Nagatoro told her, "Let's go get some shave ice and talk about your trip, Senpai is buying." she grinned as she patted his stomach. Senpai sighed in resignation, "all right, come on, everyone, shave ice on me." Nagatoro jumped with Glee and kissed him on the cheek, "Thank you, Senpai."
AUTHOR'S NOTES: I wanted a silly little story for a character that really doesn't get a lot of depth in her own element. The idea of Yoshi being a budding writer seemed to fit the fact that she's a social chameleon, she blends into the background rather easily and aside from her parroting Gamo, she is a character of few words.
She seemed to be a perfect fit to be a friend to Uzaki, aside from the physical similarities, Uzaki's toothy grin would easily remind Yoshi of Nagatoro, minus the overprotectiveness of Senpai. Uzaki doesn't have a lot of female friends, aside from Ami-san, so Yoshi becoming a friend makes a nice addition to her.
