"An AU pair?" Mia asked surprised. "Your mother copes fine. And I can always help out!"
"She thinks it's a good idea. Apparently, Magda is as old as some of the other nurses. You are lucky she's a girl!" Tim informed Mia who lay against him on his bed.
"I am not a social butterfly you know that. I don't like the idea of having a young woman in your house!" Mia informed him getting up and rubbing down her dress.
"Why?" Tim asked cluelessly.
"I just don't!" Mia snapped.
She wandered down the stairs to the living room to where Shelagh stood in the kitchen.
"You know if you ever need help with the kids I'm here," Mia said.
"I know Mia and I'm grateful but this allows both of us to return to work and this means you'll be able to enjoy being 16 and dating like you should!"
The following morning the Turners were stood in the kitchen. Mia stood beside Tim his arm comfortably around her waist whilst Mia held Angela's hand.
Patrick walked in with some suitcases and a pretty Hungarian girl following behind him.
"Magdalena meet the family!" Patrick announced.
"Hello!" Magda said.
"Oh!" Shelagh said surprised. "Magdalena?"
"Magda," Magda corrected.
"Whatever you prefer," Shelagh added.
"Your home is very pleasing, and so is your husband!" Magda explained. Shelagh's pupils dilated. "You didn't mention you had an older daughter?"
"Sorry, I'm Nurse Mia Julienne, Timothy's girlfriend!" Mia corrected. "Patrick how about you take Magda's bags?"
"No, I'll do it!" Tim said to his girlfriend.
Mia decided she really didn't like the au pair. Mia found Magda quite well invasive. And Timothy spent a lot more time with the au pair than Mia would have liked. So a few nights later one of the nights Mia would sleep at the Turners she cornered Tim in his room.
"Timothy Turner I'm sorry to say but this is ridiculous!" Mia snapped.
"Darling what's upset you so?" Tim asked confused.
"Her!" Mia snapped jabbing towards the door. Across the hall was Magda's room. "She is insufferable. If it isn't bad enough for her to flirt with a married man she then flirts with you! And you do nothing to stop her. You don't even tell her to stop!"
Tim pulled Mi into his arms and held her close.
"You are the only girl I will ever want. Now shush or we'll wake Teddy and mum's just got him off to sleep!"
Gradually everyone got used to Magda. Mia even began to like the young woman. One night at dinner Magda told the family that she wanted to be a nurse and needed the appropriate reading material which both Mia and Shelagh said they were happy to donate.
Mia was a light sleeper. So she often woke in the middle of the night and sat downstairs. Shelagh was often the same due to the unholy time Teddy often woke to feed. Mia and Shelagh came down the stairs to hear someone groan. They both knew it could have only been Magda since the little ones were still fast asleep and Tim and Patrick were asleep.
"Magda?" Mia asked and Magda opened the downstairs bathroom door. "Are you unwell?"
"No, I've just got menstrual cramps Mia no need to worry!" Magda reassured the young nurse who nodded in understanding. Teddy started to cry. Shelagh went to go upstairs but Magda insisted that she would handle the baby.
Mia made herself and Shelagh a pot of coffee and a plate of pink wafer biscuits.
"Somethings wrong with Magda," Mia whispered thoughtfully to Shelagh who nodded.
"I know but I can't put my finger on it!" Shelagh said slightly annoyed that she had drawn a blank.
And then the day of the big beauty contest arrived. Mia had been asked to compete but was too modest so she agreed to help with hair and makeup like Trixie was.
Mia knew something was wrong as Magda said she was going home because she had a headache. Almost immediately Mia rushed into the hall to tell Shelagh.
When Shelagh and Mia returned home however there was no sign of Magda.
Mia noticed a few drops of blood on the floor.
"Bloody hell!" Mia cursed and she and Shelagh hurried to Nonnatus house. She saw Sister Monica Joan in the sitting room. "Sister, have you seen Magda?"
"She ran through the hall before I caught her!" Sister Monica Joan fretted.
Mia noticed the fridge where they kept the medicine was open. Mia scanned the counter and found a bottle of ergometrine and a stray needle.
"What was she doing with ergometrine?" Shelagh asked and Mia pointed to more blood spots.
"I think she was trying to cause an abortion!" Mia replied rushing out into the allotment where they found a nearby unconscious Magda.
"Magda, did you take ergometrine were you trying to cause an abortion?" Shelagh asked pressing Magda's abdomen and feeling it contract.
"I'm waiting for it to come away!" Magda whispered.
"I gave her the books!" Shelagh cried. Mia wrapped the woman in her arms.
"So did I, I'm just as much to blame!" Mia reminisced. "We are trained to know these things but we don't always see the signs. We never learn if we don't make mistakes!"
Magda returned to France a few days later to start her nurse's training.
Mia was sad to see her go and gifted her some of her older medical books. Mia insisted that Magda writes to them as she did her training. And Mia said she was welcome to visit them at any time.
Tim sat with Mia in her room at Nonnatus.
"Mia I have something for you!" Tim said nervously. Mia nodded and turned to face Timothy who knelt in front of her. Mia's eyes widened comically.
"Tim, what are you doing?" Mia asked as she felt her heart begin to race. "We are too young!"
"Mia this is a promise ring for you from me. Think of this as a practice run for the real thing. With my ring comes a statement of intent!" Tim told her. "One day in a year or two I'll slip a diamond ring on your finger. I love you more than anything and I hope this proves that!"
The ring was sterling silver with a single blue gem.
"It's an aquamarine like your birthstone, I thought it was the prettiest stone and it held the most meaning!" Timothy babbled on. Mia pulled him in and kissed him deeply.
"He proposed!" Trixie shrieked as the rest of the sisters made their way into the sitting room.
"Who proposed, Nurse Franklin?" Sister Evangelina asked sitting in her chair.
"Master Turner proposed to Mia!" Trixie blabbed.
"What!" Sister Julienne asked.
"Trix! He did not propose. He gave me a promise ring saying that one day in the near future. Look!" Mia held up her hand so everyone could see the silver band. "It's not even a diamond. He didn't propose it was just his way of showing that he loved him!"
