This is the story of how Elinor first met Olive and Ari, how she was born in the desert and moved to the town, and how her parents began raising her. We start with her parents first meeting each other, and being romantic before getting engaged. For young Mr. Rabbit's name, I'll go by Reagan, since that was rumored to be that name by fans. Anyway, on with the story!
Desert Town, 1970s
Desert Town was a place full of great things to discover. It had many old-town buildings, full-grown cacti, and many kinds of rabbits as its residents.
There lived a 4-year-old boy who loved to pretend he was the father of babies. His parents, Baba Rabbit and Bibi Rabbit, had always gave him baby dolls every month. And when he grew up, he would be the father of a real baby. The boy was a young Mr. Rabbit, as we could call him. He loved babies so much. He loved children. And best of all, he remembered being a baby when he was born.
One day, Bibi and young Mr. Rabbit were looking at baby photos. "Ohh, there's you playing with a soccer ball," Bibi pointed. "And here's you and your father at the national park, and there's me holding you." Young Mr. Rabbit looked at the lovely pictures. He thought of something very interesting.
"Mommy, I wish I had a baby," young Mr. Rabbit told Bibi.
"Maybe one day in thirty years you could," Bibi said with a smile.
"Then I can feed it, and play games with it too."
"Just like your daddy and I did to you."
"Yeah, that's like that."
Young Mr. Rabbit ran to his room and looked through his many baby dolls and accessories. His dolls were boys and girls. Mostly girls, though. Some names were Mike, Kelly, Sarah, Rachel, Cory, Kate, and Jason.
But his favorite pretend baby to take care of was Eleanor. This doll had a great big smile, two floppy ears, and a cute, purple dress.
Desert Town, 1985
Young Mr. Rabbit, at age 11, was entering the middle school for 6th grade. Classes included science, math, and social studies. His favorite was science. Most of all, he liked taking his baby photo album with him so he could read it for his free time.
One day in school, a new student came into the social studies class. She loved babies, just like Young Mr. Rabbit.
"Hello," said the social studies teacher. "What is your name?"
The new student said her name was Ranger. She told him that she didn't remember her real name, but since she loved pretending to be a ranger of her house, her friends and family members just call her Ranger.
"Ranger, take a seat," the teacher insisted.
She's beautiful, young Mr. Rabbit thought as Ranger went to pick her seat next to him.
"Hi," said Ranger. "What is your name?"
"My name is Reagan," said young Mr. Rabbit.
"Hi Reagan, my name is Ranger."
All of a sudden, Reagan had a vision of hearts flying over Ranger. He had a crush on Ranger.
"I like pretending to take care of babies," he told Ranger. "I want to be the father of a real baby."
"That's really great," Ranger said. "I want to be a real ranger when I grow up. Then I can have deputies and a ranger station!"
"That's amazing," Reagan told her.
Then, the teacher instructed, "Ok class, open your geography textbooks and turn to page 52."
The students looked in their geography textbooks. The 52nd page read: "Australia: Chapter 1. Australia is a country in Oceania." As they continued reading, Reagan looked at Ranger for a few minutes.
In the cafeteria, Reagan ate his last bit of popcorn chicken soon as Ranger started reading her book about how to be a ranger. That book is very cool, Reagan thought. I wish I want to read it.
He leaned right to Ranger and asked her, "Hey there, may I look at your book?"
Ranger giggled and said, "Sure thing, this book teaches you how to be a ranger." Reagan read the book until the lunch period is over, and left off to go to math class.
Desert Town, 1991
Reagan, at 17 years of age, and Ranger, at 18, have almost finished high school. A prom was happening and Ranger wanted him to be her king. At the prom, Reagan was the prom king, while Ranger was the prom queen.
The year wasn't over yet: the class of 1991 was ready for graduation. Reagan, Ranger and the others got diplomas. After the graduation ceremony, there was a big party. During the party, Reagan got his first kiss. The kiss came from Ranger herself. That meant that Young Mr. Rabbit had gotten a date!
In the evening after the party, Ranger told Reagan about her interest in babies. "I used to be in Animal Town once every week to babysit a young girl named Beatriz," she told him. "I'll take you there sometime." And in an instant, Reagan thought it was very exciting. Then he told Ranger, "When I was a young boy in Desert Town, I have loved pretending to have babies. I have many dolls that look like babies. My favorite one is Eleanor."
Ranger smiled at him. "You know what, Reagan? I really like that."
Desert Town, 2000s
At 22 and 24, Ranger and Reagan always got together very well. They had their very first date at a special ice cream shop in Desert Town. Then they went to the national park to have their first dance. It was very romantic.
At 11:00 that night, a movie was showing. Ranger leaned onto Reagan as they watched the movie together. During the credits, Reagan stood up to Ranger and held her hand.
"Ranger," Reagan began. "You are my favorite friend in the whole world." Then, he pulled out a ring box, and happily, he asked her, "Ranger, will you marry me?"
Ranger said yes, and then they kissed each other before leaving off into Baba and Bibi's house.
End of chapter 1.
