Author's note: I wrote this in a documentary format mostly because I took inspiration from a movie called "What we do in the shadows". Also big thanks to Kalafinn54 for proofreading.
It was a dark, humid night in a small mountain village, and the clocks were well past midnight. A young man with a bush of brown hair hidden beneath a knitted green beanie closed the laptop in his hand before taking off his foggy glasses with a frown. He was just heading to a very creepy, old mansion with the resolve to document all the horrors he will witness within its walls. Walking carelessly, his leg slid to the front in a small puddle left by the recent rain. He would have found himself in a split, if not for two pairs of deathly cold hands that caught his arm and put him back on his legs with superhuman strength.
"Are you alright, Allegro?" Asked the stranger. It was a young, beautiful woman with long lime hair cascading down her back. She wore only a very old, comfy sweater and a pair of white, tightly-fitted pants. Her oval face and delicate nose made her exceptionally beautiful, even in the dark.
"Miss Rena! Thank you very much, I was nearly a goner." Allegro bowed, straightening his back as much as he could to convey his gratitude.
"No need to go to extremes like that, boy. The most that could have happened would be a small bruise." She laughed it off. "That said, you're quite late."
"Yes. I was running an errand close by and they didn't want to let me go.I hope that's not an issue."
"Not at all. I saw you from my room's window and got a little excited." A shy smile made its way onto her ghastly pale face.
"Your room…" Allegro looked up at the only open window farthest to the left. She shouldn't have seen him coming until he stepped on her lawn. Which means she went down from the first floor to meet him in less than a few seconds… "That's amazing Miss Rena! So vampires have super speed like in the movies?"
"Super speed? That's just a stereotype, I merely jumped down." The man's eyes lit up again, ready to ask another question, when Rena sneezed at him. Something wet hit his cheek. "But enough of that, let's come inside so you can meet everyone."
Mumbling a fast 'of course' he followed her to the door as he wiped whatever germs vampires had with his sleeve. To his surprise the inside of the ghostly mansion looked like the lair of a yoga-loving hippie. The small veranda was separated from a dimly lit hallway by a portiere made out of orange and red beads. Allegro put his shoes on a rack and came face to face with a painting of an elephant in a suit meditating as a rainbow appeared above it. In fact, all the walls were graced with surrealist paintings. In one of the corners stood a tall plant that covered two of them, as well as all the effort the artists put into their making.
As they went through the corridor the young man noted it wasn't just the veranda, but the whole place was covered with plants and objects of questionable origin. A vase made of gold stood next to a stuffed squirrel in a fedora as a small coffee table on chicken legs stood under a black, simple mask à-la vizard. If he didn't already decide to make his project on vampires, he might have made it about this house as it was a truly interesting place, full of strange decor.
They arrived at the living room where in the middle stood a long dining table with lion heads sculpted on its legs. There he saw three people seated. A woman with lavender hair, a historically looking outfit and a monocle. She seemed to be the first vampire he met that looked like the ones in fiction. A stereotype. Next to her sat a redheaded man who didn't really look older than himself. He wore a football jersey and a cap that matched, as his expression wasn't exactly thrilled either, but still friendly. And then opposite him sat a motionless, albeit tall man. He was clothed in a black… cloak. His hair was gray and put into a disorderly ponytail. On a closer look his nails seemed longer than a tiger's. One could see them starting to roll back inside if not distracted by how dirty and full of dried blood they are. His fixated gaze on the human didn't make his presence any less intimidating.
"Everyone, this is Allegro." Rena started. "He's going to stay with us for the summer and create a documentary for his college major."
"Hello everyone, I'm grateful for this opportunity." He bowed again.
"I wasn't even told about it until a few hours ago." The prupulette crossed her arms as the redhead next to her nodded. Allegro responded with an awkward 'oh' and noticed a bronze pendant sitting comfortably on her chest. A family heirloom perhaps?
Rena widened her smile, squinting her eyes into crescent moons. "Every year we do the same thing over and over again. I thought taking him with us wouldn't change much either."
The purpulette looked away signaling defeat, probably already used to her roommate doing things her own way. "This grumpy girl here is Aisha. You'll have to forgive her, she's something like a doctor and you know how serious and boring that can make a person."
"I don't mind. I am an intruder after all."
"No. You are our guest." Rena said as she turned to the redheaded boy. "This is Elsword. He's a newborn compared to us."
"Sup'" Elsword flashed a golden boy grin towards him and in this weakly illuminated space the glow of his white teeth blinded him for a moment.
"And this gentleman here is Ain." Nothing. Ain didn't acknowledge his presence at all. No movement, no hi, not even a change in his breathing. If he was breathing. "Ain is not the talkative type."
"It's fine. During the making of this project I won't be talking much either. I'll be just listening and sometimes asking questions." As he said, he put his new laptop on the table that swayed a little. Seemed like one of the lions wasn't in the best condition.
"That's right. I told you that we can't be seen in pictures or videos, so how are you going to do it?"
"I'll be writing everything down whenever I have time. Luckily my memory is good. Except when conducting interviews, because then I'll be writing every word down as I go."
"Interviews?"
Interview with Miss Rena #1
"So what exactly should I talk about?" The lime haired vampire was seated on a chair made entirely out of pencils. They decided the Interviews were going to happen in their resting room for a sense of privacy.
"How about telling me the differences you see between when you were a human and now?"
"Differences…" She broke off one of the pencils and played with its eraser part. "To be honest with you, I don't really remember my time as a human anymore. It was but a small part of my life. I also did sleep for a long while and then had to relearn the language because it changed so much, but talking about that would be boring. So, let me tots tell you about the differences I noticed while meeting other humans."
She pointed her pencil at the covered windows. The cardboard only sealed the parts with glass and it was still possible to open them if someone so desired. "I'm envious of those who can go out in the sun and not turn into someone's allergy trigger. Our bodies don't age, but it's not like we can't get injuries, or don't have other flaws that get in our way all the time. For example; I can heal a bullet wound in a few days, yet silver is so poisonous to me I'm afraid to even breathe in the presence of that metal. One time I had a terrible pain in my calf. It's funny now, because like a true vampire, I ignored it. I did end up in the prosectorium a couple days later, but it was fine, I broke out. I went to Aisha instead so she could get me checked and she said I ruptured my 'plantaris tendon'."
She laughed abruptly and then continued: "I was afraid that I'll need an operation to do something about it but all she answered with was; Nah, you don't use it. It's a vestigial, a leftover from when we used to walk on all fours. In fact, a lot of people don't have it anymore. I found it amazing. I'm rupturing tendons humans have evolved from having!"
Interview with Miss Aisha #1
"I used to work as an assistant in a herb shop when I was still a human. This was the closest job I could get that was somehow related to my passion, which is alch- I mean biology. It was also during one of the shopkeepers' many breaks when a vampire visited and demanded I give him a herb for digestion. He was penniless so of course I said no and he offered me immortality in exchange. I agreed only if he did his part of the bargain first. Of course, I thought he was lying so only after he did it I told him he's in the wrong place as this shop sells sedative herbs."
"So you made an enemy of your maker?" Allegro asked.
"He hasn't spoken to me since, but I'm not quite sure if it's because he's still mad, or because Ain doesn't speak much in the first place. Well, no one is really sure whether his name is really Ain, as it seems to be a name from a language that doesn't exist anymore."
Interview with sir Elsword #1
"I've been a vampire for eleven years already and it's not something I can hide and live with normally. I tried. Can you hear how weird I talk after hanging out with those people? It's a 'commitment' I was not prepared for. I was wasted at a college party when I met Aisha. Every red flag that something was wrong went around my head and we ended up in her house. I remember seeing a deflated football on a wall being what sobered me up and I realized how weird this house is. And I'll be real with you, I ran as fast as I could. My friends always told me: Elsword listen, don't stick your dick into crazy. And those were some wise friends of mine. Sadly on my way back I ran into Ain and he made me into what I am now."
"That's…" Allegro's warm fingers paused writing as he considered his next words. "I'm sorry."
"It's fine." With a wave of his hand, Elsword dismissed it. "I can fly and I was lucky to be turned in my prime, unlike Auntie Luciella who's main diet is pedophiles. But yeah, there are less lucky things like being stuck with the same people all the time, in a house that looks worse than a thrift shop from forty years ago, all thanks to Rena and her hobby of collecting stupid things. Oh, also, vampires have no sense of humor, have you ever heard one say a joke? It's just a scary story, but they laugh at the end."
Interview with sir Ain #1
"Is it hard to live with other vampires?"
"..." Ain's empty eyes were hawkishly fixated on him.
Allegro wasn't sure of his safety. "Then maybe how was it for vampires back in the days?"
"..."
"...No?"
"..."
"The most important thing in hunting is how you look." Rena adjusted the fluffy brown coat on her arms. She was staring into a mirror shaped like a snail and throwing down whatever miniscule dust she found. Compared to her, Elsword only took off his cap as Aisha put on a pair of jeans and a different chemise shirt. With today's fashion anything could work, especially if your face is nice.
Only Ain was still wearing his black cloth, staring at Allegro as the young man pretended to ignore it. "Is sir Ain not going with us?"
"Ain? Nope. We feed him chickens and occasionally bring him humans here. His looks are… too bizarre for the modern era humans." The lime haired woman said as she moved to shaping her eyebrows, without the need of her reflection.
"So that's why Miss Aisha brought you here, Sir Elsword?"
"Yup. And just call me Els."
"What are you on about? You were my dinner." Aisha chipped in, raising a brow.
"He was? Then why did you bring him here? From what I understood you leave bodies where you eat them." As Allegro talked, Redhead seemed to question her with his eyes.
"Don't you remember when I complimented your body Els? I wasn't kidding. You were going to be my next specimen. I had all the equipment ready for dissection when you decided to run."
"Huh?" He froze, eyes wider than ever. Goosebumps ran across Allegro's back. Elsword slowly moved towards Ain and whispered a 'thank you'. Ain nodded in response, the most he did since he saw the human.
Waving goodbye, everyone left their safe, albeit weirdly decorated house and went to the nearest city. It wasn't located as high as their village and it was much warmer. One could finally believe it's summer time.
"Cities are always full of the living, no matter the daytime. I think clubs and bars are the best places to go to try out new flavors, but you shouldn't pick those who are drunk or on drugs. It's like drinking a spiked margarita. And trust me, you don't wanna fly in that state." As Rena walked pointing at different clubs they visited, her hair fluttered back and forth. Apparently, vampires don't need to eat every day because one human has enough blood in them to last a week. Only Aisha was looking for a victim today, while Rena and Elsword showed the city to their visitor.
"And here! This is where we hang out the most." They stood in front of the electric door separating the main street from the shopping mall. And they stood there. Nobody moved to the entrance, so Allegro did not move too.
"Are we… going in? Oh wait, Vampires can't enter without being invited, right?" He asked after a while.
"No, we have to wait for someone, you in that case, to go first." Aisha answered as she crossed her arms.
"She's right. All that new technology uses things that don't see us. We can't open these doors ourselves." added Elsword, shrugging.
Allegro quickly stood in the door's sensor reach and let them pass. They looked like ducklings, all walking in a line. One would think they'd act natural, in case of meeting a vampire hunter.
They walked briskly through the gallery. They visited a home accessories store -much to Rena's delight-, bookstores, and an acoustic performance in the middle of one of the corridors. Not many places are open during the night, yet this place seemed to be a paradise for vampires. Lastly, they found themselves in the cinema. They didn't have money, but nobody needs it when you have someone with hypnotizing skills with you.
Allegro was not interested in the film, as he wasn't a fan of exaggerated special effects masking the fragile amount of plot. The same could not be said about his companions who, despite their different ages, were all consumed by what they saw. It must be intriguing to them. Not the movie itself, but just how the world is moving forward. He himself was surprised recently when he heard about electric skateboards. What must these people feel? After all, their whole life is based on the fact that they experience great and drastic changes all the time.
"This joke was indeed inappropriate." the man on his right commented. He had short blonde hair where two of his front strands ended in brown. He wore rimless glasses and sat in a rather relaxed pose, hands loosely clasped together.
"What are you doing here Chung? Nobody invited you here. " Said Rena on Allegro's left.
"I smelled the blood, and the thrift shop stench. Knowing who it belonged to, I decided to see how you are doing." Chung's way of speaking was something Allegro met frequently when he saw his fellow English students. Clearly, Rena did not like him as she visibly cringed. "Who is this? I don't remember seeing you take your victims to the screenings. "
"This man here is doing his project on us. If you could be so thankful and go away- "
"Really? But I will gladly tell you what I know. Well, I'm not a vampire, but a lone wolf. I've been alive for a long time, never needing a pack. My only friend has been the moon that never truly leaves me. In a way it feels like he is a human. And his name is Somnus. I also know a lot of interesting things. I was transformed while fighting a monstrous beast at the dead sea's shores. Our battle happened to get in the way of local werewolves and vampires arguing- "
Rena nudged Allegro slightly and shook her head towards the exit. Everyone got up slowly, trying not to alert the excited werewolf from his chatter. Allegro left with them even if he wished he could hear more of that story.
Interview with miss Rena #2
"It's true that werewolves and vampires didn't get along very well, and they had several wars with each other. But times have changed, we are tolerant now. And I can actually stand a werewolf if it's not Chung. He talks in such a way and for so long that I'd rather get impaled than listen. Fortunately, I slept soundly for the most of his immortal life. Not only is it tiresome for me to listen, he also exaggerates terribly. He fought the beast? Rather, he was arguing with his ex. And I don't smell like a thrift shop at all. In addition, his favorite activity when seeing us is eating and dramatizing how tasty it all is, because he knows that we vampires cannot consume anything but blood! Oh Rena, You're really missing out on the rich flavor of wine after a bite of a Dorito." She tucked a loose strand of her hair behind her ear. "Besides, I'm not the only one who thinks that way. Like hell is he packless by choice. That's not how wolves work."
They left the building when the sky was cloudless. Suddenly, he wondered if he could hike into the mountains and spend the night watching the stars there, as the view must have been amazing. He should ask Rena about it later. The sounds of amused people caught his attention. "A mirror maze?" He stammered thoughtfully. "You can't really see your reflection, right? Does that mean such a maze would be easy for you?"
"Hm?" Rena thought. "We never really tried."
After hypnotizing the goalkeeper, they went inside. The infinite illusion ended up being a bigger challenge, as the only time they could tell something was a mirror, was when it had clear dirty spots left by other customers. There wasn't much space inside either, so Elsword was in the lead, trying out roads and sometimes hitting a mirror, as Rena absentmindedly followed. At the end Allegro walked with Aisha who hasn't spoken for a while now and decided to try his luck. "I can see that you don't really like me being nosy about vampires. I understand that humans getting in the business of immortals is never good for you?"
She gave him a sideway look. "I've never been good at making new friends, especially with humans. I know it's a cliche to hear from a vampire, but humans all die too quickly. " Her tone was tired, and her hand played with the pendant lightly. "I would like to say that it stops hurting over time, but it doesn't. When you invest emotions in someone, it will always pay you back. It's best to keep your distance. Besides, the last man I made friends with tried to drive a stake through my heart while I was sleeping."
"That's… awful."
"Maybe. But it made killing people much easier. Currently they are a bit like chickens to me. " She smiled and a small trace of dimples could be seen.
He decided to ignore her last words. "Do you keep a picture of someone like that in your necklace? Of someone you miss."
"This?" She hesitated, then opened the pendant to reveal a picture of Aisha, with a dead man sitting on a chair. Allegro regretted asking as the doctor continued: "That was my first successful finding. I decided to celebrate it by taking a costly picture. I keep it with me to remind myself of the satisfaction of a job well done. It motivates me further."
The sudden melody of the telephone ring interrupted their conversation (Luckily for the student). The sender was ... Elsword. "Why are you calling me?" She looked ahead but there wasn't any red hair in sight. "Rena, where is he?"
Rena's cheeks became red out of shame. "I slowed down a bit because I was interested in this perpetual image that the mirrors show and somehow… lost sight of him."
Aisha answered the phone immediately and put him on a speaker. It made him feel weird as he thought vampires wouldn't know how to use phones or gadgets of that type. Maybe it was his bias? Elsword's voice reached them. "Where are you guys? I'm lost."
She rolled her eyes. "It's a maze Elsword, the whole point is to get lost. Look for an exit and wait for us there." She hung up, put the phone back in her pocket and walked with more energy than before. "Let's go back already. I don't want to spend the whole day here."
"Oh Aisha, you're just going to sit in your room and do all that boring stuff. Have some fun once in a while."
"Boring? I'm sorry. I am an explorer in the field of science, and there is nothing more interesting than revealing the unknown." She said as she passionately gestured with her hands.
Rena only smiled with a raised brow, which the doctor didn't like.
Interview with miss Aisha #2
"I'm tired of others not taking my passion and effort seriously. Vampires have different bodies from humans, which means that we have different medical problems and solutions. We certainly don't get sick as often, but it still happens! I am doing things that the vampire society will praise me for one day."
She relaxed and then added: "And I'm also looking for different ways vampires can die, just so, um, we're not close to danger we don't know about." A nervous laugh slipped from her lips.
"Ah, Screw this. I have more pressing matters which is my research, not playing a tourist in a city I lived in for 97 years in!" From under her feet came a thick fog which in the blink of an eye covered her whole body, then it dissolved and in Aisha's place was only a small bat. She flew ahead and when she reached the first surface, she turned and hit the mirror with a loud bang. A pile of smoke showed again and instead of the bat on the floor, Aisha was holding her head with a pained expression. A print was left on a mirror between soiled fingerprints, reminiscent of a modern art painting.
"Oh, calm down, I'm coming." Rena ran over to her roommate and slowly helped her stand. Honestly, Allegro did not fully understand their relationship. Sometimes they pissed off each other and did things they didn't like, but it didn't seem like they would hold it against themselves for long. In his experience, such different people do not stay together for long. Probably because of their long lives and the limits of the people they could really be their true selves with. He wondered how serious it must have been for the immortals to truly hate someone. Chung must have been one of those unbearable characters since, according to Rena, he was not alone by choice.
"Allegro, are you coming?" She shouted, supporting Aisha with one arm. That hit must have hurt. Finally, after a while, they found an exit and Elsword, who already waited for them with a bored face.
"Finally, were you guys camping there or something?" He put a hand on his hip and made quite a mean girl pose. "What happened to that crazy girl?"
"Not 'that' and not 'crazy'! Why is the society of this era not respectful of people? I am a lady!" She screamed violently pointing her finger at him, which made Rena sway. Elsword put on his best 'scared' mock face. "Zero respect, zero!"
"Calm down, young lady." A dark-skinned, handsome policeman with intense yellow eyes stood between the vampires. Allegro, who was watching everything from the side, didn't notice the stranger until he spoke. He would have considered it an oversight until recently, when he learned of immortals actually existing. Was that person one of them?
"Why am I so unlucky?" Aisha audibly exhaled and put her hand to the policeman's face. "You have not seen anything suspicious. Go back to patrolling the area. " she said slowly, waving her finger back and forth.
"Miss, you are completely drunk, and- Are you even of legal age?"
"W-What?"
"Your ID please." He put his hand out and the girl just stared at it stupidly.
"I don't have it with me." Her voice resembled the sound a dog would make to its owner after it shit on his carpet.
"Mhm, Your name, address and phone number?"
She dictated her information to him. He declared he was not the kind of person who would let go of even small things and that he would contact her about the offense.
They gradually went back, Aisha still supporting herself on Rena. "Do I really look so young? I was of age when I became a vampire. "
"How should I say ..." Elsword began, amused. "In low light you look like you ran away from home, because they didn't allow you to buy more books."
The girl only gave him a glare and turned to Rena. "Before we go back, I really need to eat something."
"I know. You're always in a bad mood when you're hungry."
"Yes?" Aisha's gaze drifted far away. Away from this street, or even city. "At this age, you can still sometimes be surprised. Incredible."
"By the way." Allegro interjected. "Are none of you surprised that hypnosis didn't work? And are you not afraid that this policeman will discover who you are? "
Rena waved her free hand, like she was sweeping away the idea. "Powers are like parts of the body. Sometimes, like the knees, they can refuse to listen. No wonder it didn't work, Aisha was hit pretty badly. In addition, it wouldn't work anymore on him if we tried, because the victim needs to be focused and relaxed. if one of us put another finger in front of him it would just agitate him further. And when it comes to identity, we change our names and documents every now and then, so there shouldn't be any problems apart from adding 'making a fuss in the middle of the street' to her file."
"I wasn't doing anything like that…"
"Anyway, we should get you some crucifix."
"Me?" Asked confused Allegro.
"You don't want Ain to mistake you for his lunch, do you?" She laughed as if she found it exceptionally funny.
"Yeah, let's buy a crucifix." he added hastily. This summer had only just begun, and after merely one day, he didn't know if it's going to be exciting or scary.
