One day passes with no word from Violet. Then a week. Everytime he calls her she doesn't pick up. He always lets it go to voicemail, though, because he loves hearing her voice. He misses her so much. He misses the way she effortlessly rattles off science facts and how cute she looks when she's ranting about something. What he misses the most, though, is holding her in his arms and kissing her. He wonders if he'll ever get to kiss her again.
A week and 3 days later
Evan's phone buzzes as he's finishing up paperwork in his office. He looks at his phone and a huge smile comes to his face as he sees he has a text from Violet. He opens the text.
Violet: Are you free tonight? I wanna talk.
Evan: I'm free for you any night.
Violet: Meet me at Cindy's at 9:00.
Evan: Can't wait.
Evan shuts off his phone, leans back in his chair, and smiles to himself. He was finally going to get to see Violet.
9 pm, Cindy's Rooftop Bar
Evan takes a deep breath and opens the door to Cindy's. He scans the room looking for Violet. He spots her sitting on a stool by the windows. She's wearing high waisted jeans and a green crop top. Her hair is down in its natural waves. He sucks in a breath in awe of how beautiful she looks. Evan walks over to her.
"Hi"
Violet looks up at him.
"Hi Evan"
She gestures to the stool next hers and Evan sits down.
"What are you drinking?" he asks.
"Vodka soda."
"Didn't think you were a vodka kinda gal."
"I am when I'm anxious."
Evan flags down a waiter and orders a vodka soda for himself. He turns back to Violet.
"You don't need to be anxious, Vi. It's just me."
Violet bites her lip.
"I know. I'm just worried that I messed things up."
He softly chuckles to himself.
"Violet Mikami, you couldn't mess things up even if you wanted to."
She looks at him, her eyes soft and sincere. Evan moves his hand over hers. Violet takes a deep breath.
"I'm really sorry, Evan. I shouldn't have given you the cold shoulder and ignored all your calls."
"It's okay."
The waitress comes back with Evan's vodka soda and sets it down in front of him.
"No it's not. You've always listened when I have something to say and I should've done the same for you. Gallo told me what you did for me. Going to DC Hill and offering to give up your job? That's a big deal and I wish I hadn't been so stubborn and had let you tell me that yourself."
"Well I forgive you, Violet. And I hope Gallo told you what he did too. It wasn't just me that went to bat for you."
"He did tell me. It means a lot that you two stood up for me. Thank you."
Evan winks at her and squeezes her hand.
"Anytime. You know I'd do anything for you."
Violet grins at him. He rubs a thumb softly over her cheek. She scooches closer to his stool, closing the space between their knees. Her heart starts beating faster. Violet leans forward and presses her lips to his. He happily kisses her back. Their lips moving together just feels so right. They've both missed this. Evan gently pulls away from Violet.
"I love you, Violet. I always have."
She puts her hand to his cheek and smiles.
"I love you too."
They share another brief kiss.
Everything feels like it is back in place now. Evan and Violet spend a few moments just staring at each other in silence, catching up on the week and three days that they didn't see each other. Then Evan stands up and takes her by the hand and leads her outside to the balcony. It's a perfect Chicago night. They look out at the skyline and the lake. Evan puts his arm around Violet and as she lays her head on his shoulder he kisses the top of it.
"Thank you for coming back to me" he whispers.
"And thank you for waiting for me," she replies.
They smile at each other and then turn back to face the city view. The moon shines bright overhead. Violet and Evan are content to be back in each other's arms and in each other's lives.
