*Recap*
"Yes, you will," he says. "This way I can be between you and the door in case someone dares to try and come in here."
"Fine." I say dropping my bag. "I won't argue with you on that."
This arrangement goes on for at least one week. I would stay at Flack's each evening, and he would pick me up from the coffee shop. Sometimes I stayed open late when he had to work later. Other members of the group would stop by periodically when they could. I hadn't seen the man anymore and I honestly felt like maybe things were getting back to normal. During this week, I had also hung out with the group more. When they came in for coffee, we would chat about work and life. I grew close to Lindsey and Stella. We all made plans to grab drinks after everything was over. The only one who hadn't come in was Detective Taylor. I guess he must not have really liked me for some reason.
I really hoped that I wasn't causing too much of a nuisance for everyone. I really wanted everything back to the way it was. I was hoping the guy had left or gotten arrested. I just wanted life to be normal again.
One night I was cleaning up and getting ready to close up like normal. I had just left out the back door to throw out the trash in the dumpster behind my store. The door always got stuck, so I used a rock to prop open the door. I had to set the trash bag down to open the dumpster. It was heavier than I could open with my arm still sore from the shooting. I had just opened the dumpster when everything went dark.
When I started to come to, I realized I couldn't move my hands. As I twisted them, I could feel the ropes tying the behind me and the chair I had somehow gotten into. I opened my eyes, but everything was still dark, which must mean that there was something covering my eyes. I tried to shout for help but the thing in my mouth stopped me. What was happening and why was I the target. I heard some heavy steps coming from far away and got closer and closer. I could feel the person standing close to me.
"Evan sent me to say hello," the gruff voice says and my whole being just froze.
I shook my head as hard as I could. Suddenly I felt something really cold on my cheek and then it felt like my cheek was on fire. I winced in pain and could feel something running down my cheek. I heard the voice laugh.
"Did you really think that he wouldn't be able to find you if you moved away, changed your appearance?" The voice asked as I felt the cold metal, I now knew to be his knife along my leg. Oh god, how I was wishing I had worn pants and not a skirt today. "He figured out that you had left and spent a few years trying to find you and then he figured it out."
Once again, my skin felt like it was on fire, and I just knew he had cut my leg. I could feel the tears falling. I had done so much to escape my past, but it seems I couldn't do that no matter where I went. If Evan could find me here when I was protected almost all the time, I would never be safe anywhere.
"Oh, don't give up just yet," the voice said closer to my ear. "We are just getting started. I was asked to do this nice and slow. That way you could feel how much he has felt while in prison." There was a pain in my other leg this time.
This went on for awhile longer. I could feel my body getting colder and weaker. I didn't know how much blood I had lost or how many cuts he had inflicted. I was trying to think about anything else but what was happening right now. The guy had left a little while ago with the promise of coming back soon. Since he said he would do this slowly, I figured he left to get another tool to inflict more damage.
I don't know how long he was gone, but I was starting to get tired. I knew not to sleep, because I could not wake up if I did. I can't believe that I was thinking that things were getting back to normal. I was foolish for ever thinking Evan would leave me alone. He tormented me before we broke up and after. He had taken the only person I cared about most in the world and now he wasn't going to let me live in peace.
Suddenly there were footsteps again coming from I think is the hallway nearby. He must be back to so something else. I shook my head to try and get him to not do it anymore. He placed his hands on my arms and I winced from the contact with the open wounds. Suddenly there were more footsteps coming down the hall. It sounded like several feet. What was going on!?
"Step away from her," I heard Falck shout at the man who had now gotten behind the chair. The knife was now back against my skin.
"Not until you leave," he says holding the knife tighter against my neck.
"This doesn't have to end this way Mason," Messer's voice calls out.
My head tilts a little to the side. 'Wait! Mason? That can't be I would have recognized him if he was in my shop."
"Oh, now you recognize me," Mason says with his voice dripping with hatred. "It took my brother years to track you down b***h. You had him sent to jail and he had me sent here to send you to hell."
'Had he changed since I last saw him? It had been almost 10 years, I guess people changed a lot in that time.' My head was spinning with this information and the loss of blood.
"10 years changes you a lot," he says. "But not enough that I wouldn't recognize you in an instant."
"So you accepted the hit on our Officer to get to her?" Detective Taylor's voice asks.
"Your officer had pissed off the wrong person and they came to me," he says. "I happened to see her when I was following the officer and instantly let my brother know."
"So what? Why go to the trouble of hurting her like this?" Flask asks. The voices sound a bit closer than before.
"She ruined his life and then he ruined hers," Messer says. "Isn't that right Mason?"
"She had the audacity to say he was stalking her, and that he killed her mom," Mason said angrily. "I will never forgive her for putting him into jail. Her mom got what she deserved and so will she." I felt my neck flare in pain and it all went quiet and dark again.
