Meet The In-laws
Percy felt like banging his head against the elevator. He would've too, but Annabeth was also in the elevator with him and she wouldn't even let him take off his jacket. Even when he was sweating bullets.
You see, Percy was being dragged to some dinner being hosted by his dad and Athena. Apparently, it was to 'celebrate' Percy and Annabeth's relationship but knowing the gods, he'd be surprised if he came out of this dinner alive.
Annabeth was busy texting her mom updates every half hour. Percy looked over at her and just stared. She was doing like a hundred different things at the same time. She was texting her mom, making sure her hair and make up was perfect, straightening her dress, and making sure Percy didn't look like a Picasso painting.
The elevator dinged and the doors slid apart. Percy was getting antsy, so naturally he ran out of the elevator. He took his freedom too far. He started taking off his tie and got ready to take off his jacket when Annabeth ran up to him and stopped him. He was still wondering how she could run so fast, even in high heels.
"Percy, put your tie on!" Annabeth said, "Oh my gods, we're going to be late."
"Relax, we got like ten minutes." Percy said as he started fixing his tie.
"Ten minutes isn't enough!" Annabeth wailed, batting his hands out of the way and fixing his tie.
Percy watched while she fixed his tie. She arched her eyebrows while she completely redid his tie. He wouldn't have even wore a tie, not to dinner, but of course Annabeth forced him to wear a suit. Apparently, dining with the gods meant wearing the fanciest clothes possible, even when he usually wore a camp shirt and jeans during most encounters with the gods.
"Can I at least take the jacket off?" Percy asked, "It's hot out here!"
"No, you can't. What if my mom sees?" Annabeth asked.
"Fine." Percy grumbled.
Eventually, Annabeth was finally satisfied with his tie. She nudged him along and together they walked down the streets. Annabeth smiled with pride at every single building she rebuilt but Percy was busy looking for a snack machine.
"Turn right up here, my mom's palace shouldn't be that hard to find." Annabeth said.
Percy didn't bother responding. Annabeth knew this place better than he did, she rebuilt it after all. He followed Annabeth's instructions and soon, they were standing at the steps to Athena's palace. Normally, Percy would it beautiful, especially with it's clean white marble pillars and golden framed windows. Instead, he was hoping that the goddess wouldn't try to murder him on sight.
"Well?" Annabeth said, "We're two minutes early."
"I don't wanna go." Percy said.
"Shut up." Annabeth said while rolling her eyes. Percy didn't want to go but Annabeth grabbed him the by the sleeve and started dragging him up the stairs and to the doors of Athena's palace. Annabeth, being the ever so prepared daughter of Athena, reached into her pocket and pulled out a key.
Athena already knew they were coming, so Percy doubted that they'd get blasted but he still flinched when Annabeth pushed the door open. When they walked in, Percy lost his breath. The inside of Athena's palace was decorated with velvet furniture and portraits of ancient architecture. It seemed designing was something that Athena and her children knew how to do naturally.
Annabeth still kept dragging Percy, eventually dragging him into the dining room. Percy's appetite completely overwhelmed his fear when he saw all the food on the table. There was garlic bread, spaghetti, and all sorts of other freshly cooked dishes. There were only four chairs surrounding the comically large table. Athena and Poseidon were already sitting on one side, which meant Annabeth and Percy would've had to sit next to each other, which was fine by Percy.
"Glad you could make it, daughter." Athena smiled, then she looked at Percy, "You too, sea spawn."
Percy knew he didn't imagine that small growl in her voice. It didn't help that she stopped smiling.
"Take a seat, please." Athena said.
Annabeth reached for her seat, but Percy knew better. He went forward and pulled her chair out for her, which confused Annabeth until she looked over at her mother, who was eyeing Percy critically.
"Thank you, Percy." Annabeth said, sitting down and looking at all the food, "Did you make all of this yourself, mom?"
"Yes, I did." Athena said with pride, "I hope you enjoy."
"Ahem, Percy, aren't you going to take a seat, son?" Poseidon said.
Percy didn't even realize he was just standing behind Annabeth like a dork. He kind of wished his dad hadn't said anything because both Annabeth and Athena looked at him and he never felt like running so far away in his life.
So of course when Percy took a seat, he nearly fell off his chair. Annabeth snickered behind her hand while Athena rolled her eyes. Poseidon was staring at his plate as if the other three people didn't exist.
"So, I heard you two have been busy." Athena said.
"Yeah, you can thank Hera for that." Annabeth growled.
"Don't worry, we've talked to her." Poseidon said, "She said she'll just kidnap Annabeth next time, so no big deal."
"Excuse me?" Annabeth said in disbelief.
"She did not." Athena said, "Poseidon is just making stuff up."
"Aw, come on, she almost took the bait." Poseidon whined.
"My daughter isn't a fish." Athena said. She glared at the sea god, which Percy was sort of thankful for, at least she wasn't glaring at him anymore. Then she turned her gaze on him, "Aren't you going to eat, Perseus?"
"Eh, yes, ma'am, I mean your highness, I mean queen, I mean please-don't-kill-me." Percy stammered.
"You know, Athena really likes being called Owl-head." Poseidon said, "You should try it."
Athena trembled, "Try it and I promise you, Perseus, you will not make it out of this room alive."
Percy squeaked before loading his plate with spaghetti. Annabeth was secretly rubbing his side to try to make him feel better but she couldn't do it for long or Athena would notice.
"Relax," Athena said, "This is a friendly dinner after all."
"Friendly and you don't go together at all." Poseidon said.
"Shut up."
"Make me."
Athena rolled her eyes. She turned back to the demigods who were eating their food quietly. She pointed at them, "Why can't you be like them?"
"Me and Percy are quite similar, I'll have you know." Poseidon said.
"Yet your son is behaving." Athena said.
"Can we talk about something else, please?" Annabeth intervened.
"Yes, sorry." Athena said, she went back to eating her food while Poseidon was playing with the water in his glass.
After a while, Athena decided to break the silence, "So, Perseus, I've heard you made Praetor in the Roman camp. How did you do that?"
Percy really wished she hadn't asked him anything at all. His brain was still panicking at full capacity. He gripped his fork and said, "Uh, I got their eagle back."
"You make it sound easy, there has to be more to that story." Athena mused.
Luckily, Annabeth came to his rescue. She leaned forward, "Um, mom?"
"Yes?"
"I was wondering if I can get another hat?" Annabeth asked, "My old one stopped working."
"I'll get you one for your birthday." Athena said, "Now, I have a question for you, Annabeth."
The way she said that didn't sound good to Percy at all. He wasn't worried about Annabeth getting hurt, no, he was worried about Athena taking her anger out on him.
"Is Percy treating you right?" Athena asked.
Poseidon set his cup down, "Bird brain, what are you trying to imply?"
"Nothing, I just want to know how my daughter is being treated, that is all."
Annabeth glanced over at Percy who was pale. He genuinely looked like he was about to pass out. Percy felt light-headed, almost as if he was going to throw up. He didn't think he'd be this scared and Athena had just been talking.
"He's treating me just fine." Annabeth said.
"Just fine?" Athena raised her eyebrow, "Not good?"
"No, he's been treating me great!" Annabeth corrected herself.
"Good. I'd hate for us to have a little…accident." Athena said, glancing at Percy when she said 'accident'
Percy's hand curled around Riptide just in case Athena decided to try to kill him. He watched the way she held her fork, if she made any sudden moves towards him, he was running out of this palace with Annabeth.
"You know, I always wondered why you two got together." Poseidon said, "How exactly did this happen? Dare gone too far?"
"Uh, no, nothing like that at all." Percy said, "Annabeth kind of kissed me after the whole Kronos thing."
"Must've been a nice first kiss." Athena said, "It was the first, right?" Annabeth and Percy looked down at their laps. Athena's eyes widened, "When the Hades was the first one?"
"By 'first one' do you mean the first time she like ever kissed me ever, or like full on lip on lip?" Percy asked.
"Both!" Athena said, getting agitated.
"Well, the first time was after the chariot race and then the first real one was in Hephaestus's forge." Percy said.
"I started both of them before you incinerate Percy." Annabeth said.
Athena gritted her teeth. "You're lucky, sea spawn. If I ever find out you forced yourself on my daughter, you will regret it."
"Okay, so that means I get to incinerate your daughter for forcing herself on my son, right?" Poseidon said.
"Touch her and I kill your son." Athena said.
"So hypocritical." Poseidon grumbled, "Athens really should've chosen me as their patron."
"Not this again." Annabeth groaned.
"I one hundred percent deserved the patronage!" Athena said, "I gave them a olive tree, you gave them a stupid saltwater spring. You can't even drink saltwater!"
"You gave them olives." Poseidon said, "You could've gave them literally anything else."
Percy thought back to when he talked about Athens with Annabeth for the first time. Good thing Athena never found out about that conversation.
"Can we please go?" Percy whispered in Annabeth's ear.
"No, not until my mom says we can." Annabeth whispered back.
"What are you two whispering about?" Athena asked.
"Nothing, nothing at all." Percy said. He straightened up and avoided any close contact with Annabeth.
Athena narrowed her eyes, "You two better not be up to anything."
It was at that moment that Poseidon decided to make the situation worse. He leaned in and said, "They're two eighteen year olds, in this day and age, I'd be surprised if they weren't up to anything."
"Shut up right now." Athena sneered.
"What's wrong, scared of the facts?" Poseidon teased.
"You know what, I think we have to go." Percy said.
"Why?" Athena asked.
Percy panicked, he wasn't expecting her to ask him why. His mind ran through every scenario and chose one random one out of all of them. That was when Percy blurted out, "Annabeth's water broke!"
Annabeth stared wide-eyed at Percy, who just hit the big red button of Athena. Annabeth didn't even look pregnant, but the idea of her and Percy doing the deed was enough to set off Athena anyways. Athena summoned her spear and shield as she rocketed out of her seat. Poseidon was too busy cracking up in his chair.
"I knew it you were up to something, sea spawn!" Athena shouted, "You two aren't even married yet!"
"Run?" Percy asked.
"Run." Annabeth confirmed.
Both of them took off out of the kitchen as Athena threw a chair at Percy. Percy grabbed Annabeth's hand and led her back the way they came. He looked over his shoulder to see Athena sprinting after them.
"Go faster, Percy, she's right there!" Annabeth shrieked.
Percy crashed through the door and carried Annabeth down the stairs and through the Olympian streets. He turned and ducked into a alleyway as Athena ran past. They heard her getting quieter as she ran away from them.
Annabeth started chuckling, "Out of all the excuses, you chose that one?"
"I panicked, okay?" Percy said.
"Moron." Annabeth laughed.
It was evening when Percy and Annabeth returned to his mom's apartment. Percy for one, was happy to be in a somewhat safe place, and Sally Jackson was nowhere near the scary mother in-law that Athena was.
Speaking of Athena, Percy never noticed the owl that was perched outside his window.
