After hours of flight, Shayera finally reached Gotham City. It was now nighttime and she was thoroughly exhausted. Seeing a large building with gargoyles emerging from the edges of it, Shayera chose to land there, regain her strength, and also decide where she was going. Despite the fact that she had been alone in the sky, she hadn't really taken the time to actually figure anything out. Planting her feet on the head of one of the gargoyles and tucking her wings in, Shayera exhaled and looked down below at the bustling city beneath her.
"Now what?" She thought out loud.
"I was thinking the same thing."
Startled, Shayera grabbed her mace and swung behind her. She had quite enough jump scares today but this one was the most startling of all. The darkly dressed figure easily avoided her sloppy attempt of incapacitating him.
"You're sloppy."
There he was, the Batman standing directly in front of her with his arms tucked behind his torso. He has his iconic batglare equipped but his face was not angry.
"What do you want? Why are you following me?"
"I don't want anything. I'm here on patrol. It so happens that you chose the building I always come to whenever I'm looking for crime."
"I came here to clear my head, but that's fine I'll just go."
Spreading her wings Shayera was about to take off but Batman walked up right next to her and peered down the edge of the towering structure.
"You won't have to. I'll probably only be up here for another 5 minutes. The crime rate in Gotham is incredibly high."
"What do you care wether I go or not? You hate my guts so I'll just leave you and your city."
"I don't hate you, I'm not even angry with you. I simply don't trust you, not that I ever did, but then again I don't trust anyone."
This caught Shayera off guard. She assumed Batman would be livid with her, especially considering the fact that he almost died when he flew the watchtower onto the Thanagarian hyper-space bypass.
"Careful Batman, you're getting sentimental."
A grunt was all she got in response from the caped crusader.
"So-"
Shayera was abruptly caught off guard as a police chase passed right below the building the two were standing on. Batman quickly pulled out his grapple and shot into a building next to theirs. Looking one last time at the red head, Batman gave a subtle nod before he was jerked away by the steel chord. Shayera watched as he used the momentum to dive down and spread his cape to glide after the criminal's car. She watched as the Dark Knight landed on the roof of the vehicle; but sadly that was the last thing she saw as it turned a corner. Looking back at where he was once standing, it almost felt as if he was never there. A tad disappointed, Shayera sunk down onto the rooftop and contemplated where she should go now. She kind of missed the Bat's company despite how cold and intimidating it was. Once again, Shayera was snapped out of her thoughts as she noticed a glowing light behind her. Reaching for her mace, Shayera approached the symbol of Osiris, but fell onto her bottom as Doctor Fate emerged from it.
"For goodness sake I am so sick of getting snuck up on!"
"Fear not Hawkgirl. I've come to offer you a place of sanctuary to find yourself and discover your true identity."
"Sorry but I'll pass Fate. I barely know you."
"Do you have somewhere else to be?"
"Um...no I do not but-"
"Then let's go."
Shayera didn't have any time to finish her sentence or create an objection as Doctor Fate waved his hand forward and the symbol quickly moved towards them and raptured them into a room.
"This better not be a trap, for your sake."
"Do not be afraid. A friend of yours alerted me of your situation. I am only here to provide you with shelter and solace."
"Who was it?"
"They wish to remain anonymous."
"Oh I see...
Um Doctor Fate, please don't call me Hawkgirl. I don't deserve that name. It was a symbol of peace and hope, something I am no longer."
"Very well then Shayera. Please make yourself comfortable. I will leave you to process all that has transpired."
"Thank you." she muttered.
With a sigh, Shayera sat down on one of the chairs within the room she was in and quickly fell into a deep slumber.
