A/N: Hi! I just wanted to say that if you're confused about the description for the Great Hall, then check out the Hogwarts Legacy trailer. That's what I'm going for.
Harry Potter lay awake on his bed, thinking about everything that had happened the previous day. It was a fun day, at first, he thought. The Hogwarts Express was amazing, and he and Ginny had a lot of fun. Hogwarts itself looked fucking brilliant. But then the blasted Sorting Ceremony happened.
He was placed in Slytherin.
Great.
He remembered the shocked silence that greeted his sorting. McGonagall's eyebrows were raised so far in surprise that they almost seemed to disappear into her hairline. Every student was wearing a look of confusion, horror, shock, or a mixture of all three.
Well, every student except one.
Ginny just smiled at him sadly when he finally made eye contact with her. 'Still Friends,' she had mouthed to him. Those words had been strong enough to get him through the Feast.
The dinner itself had been quite lovely, and the treacle tart for dessert made him want to beg Dumbledore for more, but he was full. And the food vanished in about half an hour. After that, Dumbledore made a few announcements.
Basically, The Forbidden Forest was Forbidden, there would be no Dueling in hallways, flying inside the castle wasn't allowed, the Third Floor Corridor was off limits to all Students- even the Prefects and Heads- and there was a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher: Professor Quirinus Quirrel.
Dumbledore then told the students to go to bed, and Harry and the rest of the First Year Slytherins were led down to the Dungeons by the Slytherin Sixth Year Prefects. Harry made sure to memorize the path.
The Prefects gave some speech about how Slytherin was the best House, and Purebloods were to be treated with respect. Harry ignored all of that and, openly and loudly, yawned. He'd did it knowingly and on purpose, he even exaggerated it a bit, and got two scathing glares for his efforts.
The First Years were then shown to their rooms. Apparently, Slytherin was the only house where students did not have roommates. Something Harry appreciated very much.
The room was bigger than the one he had back at the Leaky. The entrance was in the center of the wall. There was a large, comfortable bed directly opposite the entrance, facing the door, with a bedside table on either side. There was another door that led to the bathroom to the left of the bed. There was a bookshelf in the wall, next to the door to the bathroom, and a wardrobe in the wall directly opposite the bookshelf. There was a little desk area in the wall too, next to the bookshelf.
There was also a window above the bed that cast the whole room in an ethereal sort of glow. The glow was caused by the Black Lake. It could be turned on and off, though. Thank God.
Overall, the room was better than what he'd expected. He actually preferred the open space. Hopefully, he could customize it a little. He had added a ward from his mother's book to it, though. That was why he'd been able to sleep peacefully last night. It took him 3 hours to cast it properly.
Right now, he rolled over and went to the bathroom to Freshen up. He didn't take a shower yet. He was planning on going for a run around the Black Lake. After coming back, he noticed there was a piece of parchment on one of his bedside tables. He took it and saw that it had his class schedule on it. He memorized it and kept it on the table for now.
Making his way out of the room, he went down to the common room. It was early now, almost 7, so no one was up. The common room itself was very grand. It was mostly filled with dark and green colors. There was a fireplace with a few couches and chairs around it. But Harry's favorite spot was the window with the light in it. There was a table that could seat three there.
He left the common room and made his way to the Grand Staircase without incident. He climbed to the top and reached the area outside the Great Hall. The corridor in front of him extended toward the spot he'd arrived at yesterday. Directly opposite the Great Hall doors were the entrance doors to the castle, which were open now. There was also someone sitting by the door. She looked up at him and gave him a small smile.
Ginny stood up and started walking toward him. He hadn't stopped his journey to the door either. She pulled him into a somewhat long hug and released him. She still held him by the shoulders, though, and asked, "Are you okay?"
Harry nodded. "They haven't hexed me or anything yet, but I think I'll live. What about you? How was Gryffindor?"
"Gryffindor was… ok," Ginny said, dropping her hands. "Everyone seems to think you're a Dark Wizard in the making, though. I almost hexed one of the girls for that."
"For some reason, I'm assuming you did something else," Harry said.
Ginny grinned. "I just 'had my way with words' as you always put it. She was so shocked, I bet no one's ever spoken to her like that."
Harry smiled back at her. It felt nice that she was so protective of him. He didn't know what the feeling was, or why he was feeling it. But he didn't want to analyze it either. It was special to him, and he would leave it alone. For now.
"Why are you here by the way? And how long have you been waiting?" Harry asked instead.
"I came to join you if you didn't mind" Ginny replied.
Harry frowned "Join me?"
"On your run. Or jog. Whichever you do"
"Are you sure?" Harry asked. It wasn't that he minded, it was more that he didn't know if she could run for as long as he could.
Ginny nodded. "I tried doing it a few days after you told me. Been doing it ever since"
Harry hadn't known that, but he figured he shouldn't have been surprised. She was full of surprises as he'd come to find out.
"You can join if you think you can keep up, Little Weasley" he teased her, knowing it would rile her up. He didn't wait for a reply, he just shot out of the castle and ran to the Black Lake.
"LITTLE!?" He heard Ginny's outraged shriek from behind him and laughed. Maybe Hogwarts wouldn't be so bad after all.
Harry entered the Great Hall and stopped short at the sight that met him. The House Tables were gone. Instead, there were lots and lots of round tables that looked big enough to comfortably seat eight people. Much like at his old school. He also noticed that the banners had been removed.
He saw of Ginny sitting at one of the Tables and made his way over to her. He'd decided to wait in his room for a few minutes after he finished his shower, hoping Ginny would be here. He increased his pace when he noticed that people were starting or glaring at him.
He dropped into the seat beside her "Hey" he said cautiously.
She had caught up to him after he finished his run and used Rictusempra on him till he pleaded with her to stop and apologized.
She didn't respond to him now, though. She just looked away and huffed.
Harry knew she was acting, she'd done something like this once before. He'd teased her about being short- she wasn't actually short, per se, but she wasn't able to reach a book that day at Flourish and Blotts- and she started crying. Or rather she started pretending to cry. He'd begged her to forgive him, Bat-Bogey hex him if she wanted to, but she simply started laughing. That was when he realized that he'd been had. To her credit, she hadn't caused a scene in public. They were in an empty alleyway at the time.
Now, however, Harry wasn't going to fall for it. So, he poked her in the side. She squealed and slapped his hand away "Don't do that. I'm mad at you" but her words lacked any bite, and her lips were twitching upwards, as though she was fighting a smile.
"Sureee" he drawled. "And I'm in Gryffindor. Oh, wait…" he trailed off, smiling. Ginny mock-glared at him but gave up soon and smiled back.
"Damn. I thought I had you," she said. "Though, I would've given up much sooner than last time"
"I'm never falling for it ever again," He said.
"What happened to the House Tables do you reckon?" He asked her.
"Bill told me once that they only bring it out on Special Occasions. You know, The Start of Term feast, The Halloween Feast, The End of Term Feast, and the like"
Harry nodded in understanding. "Do you have your schedule?"
Ginny nodded and pulled it out. He took out his own and saw that they had Defence Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Charms, and Potions together. He would share Herbology with the Ravenclaws, while she would do so with the Hufflepuffs. He would share Astronomy with the Hufflepuffs and she with the Ravenclaws. And finally, in History of Magic, they would both have it with their own houses.
"This is great," She said. "At least we can see each other in classes. I was worried about that."
Harry nodded "Yeah, me too"
They quickly gulped down their breakfast, ignoring the looks they were both getting and left the Great Hall. Today was a Sunday, so all they had was an optional Orientation Session (Harry and Ginny both decided to go), where they would get a brief tour of the Castle- how to get to the classes, The Hospital Wing, and the two Quidditch Pitches, stuff like that. On the tour, they would also learn about the history of the place. After the tour, they would have lunch, and then they would be free to explore the castle on their own. It was to be held on the second floor, so they took the Grand Staircase and went up to the listed room.
The Orientation had been quite informative. He felt that he probably wouldn't get lost in the castle looking for classes. Of course, he still could. He'd just have to find out tomorrow when classes started.
The problem, however, occurred when the caretaker, Argus Filch had come around the corner along with his Beast that he called a cat, Mrs. Norris. The Beast had latched on to him and scratched him on his arm and the back of his hand. Harry had slammed the stupid thing against the wall. It fell to the floor, hissed at him, and scurried away.
Filch, of course, said that Harry was the one at fault.
"You heal fast," Ginny commented, inspecting the back of his hand, where he'd been struck by razor-sharp claws twenty minutes ago.
He hadn't told her he could. It was the one ability that kept slipping his mind because he'd long since assumed that all Magical people could.
Currently, they were sitting in a clearing that could be accessed halfway around the Black Lake. He'd found it on his run in the morning, and he didn't think anyone would be foolish enough to actually travel this long.
The clearing was fuckin' beautiful. Lush green grass stretched across the floor, and dense trees surrounded them. They had a good view of the lake too.
"It's my Magic's way of… protecting me, I suppose. I developed it at the Dursleys. I think you can guess why" Harry said.
Ginny nodded sadly and squeezed his hand. "I'm sorry, Harry," She said, and let his hand go.
"It's alright. It's in the past" he shrugged and held his hand out. He called the stone he'd thrown in the lake using his Wandless Magic and handed it to Ginny since it was her turn.
"You've got to teach me that," She said, throwing the stone toward the lake again. It bounced four times before sinking in.
"I wouldn't know how to," Harry replied, calling the stone, and throwing it again. He hadn't ever played this game before, so it didn't bounce. It just sunk in. Again. "Oh, for the love of…" he muttered darkly as Ginny laughed. She found it extremely hilarious that he could rile himself up over something so silly, but things like people calling him a Dark Lord didn't have any effect on him.
He called the stone back to him, "We can still learn more spells together, at least until I figure out exactly how Wandless Magic works. Then I can teach you"
Ginny took it now and threw it. She wanted to make it bounce at least six times. That would break the record Percy had set back at The Burrow. "I thought you already knew how it worked," she told him.
"I know how to channel it. But I still don't know how to make you learn it. Maybe I should talk to Dumbledore," Harry replied, calling back the stone- which had bounced three times- and keeping it aside for now.
"Well, how did you learn it?" She asked him, fully facing him now.
He thought about it for a moment. "I was five when I first did it on command, I think. I don't remember it too clearly, but I do remember wanting a piece of chicken and I just… called it to me. I still have the scars from that night" he said mostly to himself but she heard it anyway.
Ginny paled quite a bit, and swallowed "Harry…" She trailed off helplessly, not knowing how exactly to help her friend besides just… being there. Merlin, she hated feeling so helpless.
He shook his head. "Don't worry about it. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that out loud. Let's go to the library" he said abruptly. "We can see if there are any spells we like"
"Sure" She responded, hoping that it would make him feel a bit better to not talk about it.
Harry yawned as he entered the Great Hall for breakfast the next morning. Today was the day their classes would start, and Harry was excited to learn Magic formally.
They'd learnt three more than their initial eight in Diagon Alley. Ginny had managed the Charms at least five tries before he had, though the power of their spells wasn't different at all. He just figured Charms was Ginny's best subject and came naturally to her. Charms were difficult for him, though. He could do them in three to seven tries and his Charms were powerful once he did get the hang of them.
They learnt a Packing Charm (Pack), a Disarming Spell (Expelliarmus), and a spell that canceled the effects of another spell (Finite Incantatem)
They'd stopped learning too much after that because neither wanted to be bored at Hogwarts. But these were all charms that either weren't taught at Hogwarts at all or ones that were necessary enough to learn early.
He and Ginny had also spent a lot of time in the Library, looking at the Spellbooks they liked. The Library was massive, with two floors, a restricted section, and a lot of tables where students could read and do their homework. Harry would happily go there if he couldn't get a spot by the window he liked in his common room. Unfortunately, not any spellbooks were allowed to students who weren't sixth years. You could only take the course books of the later years, something neither Harry nor Ginny wanted to do.
Of course, they spent a lot of time in the Library, which led to them missing curfew. Harry had the bright idea to explore the Castle at night, under his cloak. They found a lot of shortcuts but ended up being far too late for bed, which was the reason for Harry's drowsiness. He still decided to go for a run, which was why he hadn't already fallen asleep again. Ginny had joined him. She said that she had a surprise for him, but it would have to wait until they started learning spells in class. She said she wanted to make an impression.
Speaking- or rather, thinking- of Ginny, she came into the Great Hall at that moment, her eyes were still tired, but she wasn't going to randomly doze off. She came over to the table he was sitting at and piled her plate with food.
They quickly finished their food and went to the Transfiguration classroom. The classroom was big, surrounded by high windows, had eight rows of three desks, and still had enough room for several cages and bookshelves, two chalkboards, and a desk for the professor. Several candlesticks stood lit behind the desk. There was also a cat on the teacher's desk. Professor McGonagall, who was sitting behind the teacher's desk, looked up at them and said "Good morning, Mr. Potter, Ms. Weasley."
"Good morning, Professor" they both replied
Harry sat down behind a desk in the centre left of the class. Ginny took the desk next to his and noticed him eyeing the cat on the teacher's desk warily, his right hand hovering over his wand holster. She couldn't help but chuckle at the way his eyes were narrowed in anticipation.
"What?" He asked her in a whisper without turning to her, expecting the cat to attack any moment.
"Your face," she laughed. "It's like you want to fight the cat," she said to him in the same volume.
"Oh, I'm just preparing for a fight. I want to try harder at Transfiguration since I'm shit at Charms and a cat scratching my hand would ruin my chances of that don't ya think?"
"You're not shit at Charms Harry. Your charms are very powerful. You just don't get it so easily. It's okay not to. And it's okay if you don't get Transfiguration easily either." she assured him.
Harry sighed. "I know… it's just… well you know Transfiguration was my Dad's best and favorite subject. I want to be better here than I am at Charms, so that I can use my Dad's book to help me out later. It sounds silly, but I… I think it might help me… relate to him, you know?"
Ginny felt tears burning in the back of her eyes, but she didn't let them fall or show. This was all so… unfair!! Here he was, one of the best people she'd ever met, but he didn't have much from his parents, so he constantly pushed himself to be better at Magic just so he could relate to them in a way. It was anything but silly and she told him so.
He opened his mouth to say something, but the door to the class opened and a few students came in. That effectively ended their conversation.
A few minutes later all the Slytherin and Gryffindor First Years were in the class, all of whom gave Harry and Ginny a wide berth, which was fine by them.
"Welcome, to Transfiguration" Professor McGonagall said. "Today, we will be going over the basics of the subject, what you can expect to learn now and in your future years at Hogwarts, and finally, you shall attempt to turn a Matchstick into a needle."
"Transfiguration is the art of transforming one object into another. Unlike your other subjects, however, Transfiguration only makes use of a single spell for each one of its sub-branches. For example: There will be only one incantation to turn any object into any other object, another to turn any object into any animal, and another to turn any animal into any object, so on and so forth"
"There are many branches in Transfiguration," she continued. "But we only teach a few at Hogwarts. They are named Object to Object Transfiguration, Object to Animal Transfiguration, Animal to Animal Transfiguration, Animal to Object Transfiguration, Human Transfiguration, Conjuration, Vanishment, and Un-transfiguration. Out of all these Conjuration is the only one you will not learn if you do not take the class at N.E.W.T Level."
She proceeded to give a brief introduction to all the branches. Then she waved her wand at a box out of which, matchsticks started floating toward the students' desks.
"Now. The incantation you must use to Transfigure any object into another will be 'Conviso Verto'. It doesn't matter what object you are turning another into, nor does it matter what object you are transfiguring, the incantation will be the same. All Transfiguration spells are based on intent. It draws the power from your force of will to shape your object into the one you desire. Not everyone can cast this spell as effortlessly or consistently as you may cast a Charm, so do not be disappointed or discouraged if you cannot achieve the transformation today. Now repeat the incantation after me: Conviso Verto"
Everyone repeated the incantation, and McGonagall told them all to do so again and again till every single student got it right. Finally she told them to take out their wands and showed them the wand movement. It was a simple circular wave with a jab. When every student got the movement right, she told them all to practice. Conviso Verto was heard throughout the room.
Harry took a deep breath and tried to calm the herd of buffaloes in his stomach. He had to use his force of will, Professor McGonagall had said. And he needed to be calm to do that. He closed his eyes, and successfully tuned out every other noise in the room and focused on the task at hand. He opened his eyes when he was certain he was focused enough. He waved his wand in a circle and jabbed it in the direction of the needle.
Conviso Verto
The effect was almost immediate. There was no light to the spell. It was only his wand tip that glowed slightly orange in color. The Matchstick vibrated and started elongating, one end of the Matchstick turned sharp and the wood of the Matchstick changed into the steel of the Needle, finally a hole formed in the middle of the Needle.
He grinned in relief, mostly because no one else had even come close. Ginny's reason was that she was watching him, and currently, beaming at him.
He heard a gasp from Professor McGonagall as she came near his desk, probably to see why he and Ginny were grinning at each other, instead of doing their work. He noticed that the whole class had stopped doing whatever they were doing and was staring at him.
"May I, Mr. Potter?" She asked, gesturing toward his transfigured needle. Harry nodded and she took the needle into her hand and inspected it. Turning over in her hand, and rapping it against the desk once to see if it actually transformed into steel. It did.
"Take 20 points for Slytherin, Mr. Potter" she said with a smile, handing the needle back to him. "For an excellent Transfiguration. The last student to get the spell right on his first try was James Potter. And even then, he hadn't been able to change it completely into steel like you have." Harry grinned proudly at the praise, and something inside him was roaring in approval of it. He was especially touched that McGonagall had deemed his needle better than his Dad's. Not because he suddenly thought he was better than him, it was just being compared to him at all.
She flicked her wand and another Matchstick came flying into her hand. She handed it to him and asked. "If you would please show us again, Mr. Potter?"
He nodded and set it on his desk. He looked at Ginny and she was giving him a grin that screamed 'Mischief'. He knew what she was thinking, his own thoughts were along the same line.
Time to drop a provervial bomb on them, he thought with amusement.
He repeated the wand movement and cast the spell silently- he refused to do magic any other way. Besides, it was easier this way once you got the hang of it.
His Transfiguration achieved the same effect as before, except this time, everyone who was raised among magic had their eyes bugging out, and mouths open in complete shock.
"How?" Professor McGonagall asked in a whisper.
"Practice," he replied with a shrug. He noticed that Ginny had a hand over her mouth. To anyone else she appeared to be in awe, but Harry knew that she was struggling not to burst out laughing. This had to be the greatest stunt he'd ever pulled.
McGonagall just shook her head "Take another 20 points." She said in somewhat of a daze.
McGonagall set them all to work again, and set off correcting other students. Ginny actually started trying this time. She got it soon, what with Harry giving her a few tips, and the fact that this was a beginner level Transfiguration. She was second in the class and got 15 points for it. Professor McGonagall then taught the two of them Un-Transfiguration. The art of reverting a Transfigured object back to its original state. The incantation for it was Reverte Verto and Harry got both his Needles to turn back on his first try. Again, Ginny took a few more minutes, but she learnt it still. Then McGonagall told them to complete their homework for the day.
The class bell rang a few seconds after they handed in their essay on the basics of Transfiguration. They quickly left the classroom and set off to the Charms class. On the way, they took a detour behind a tapestry that opened if you asked it to do so politely. They'd found it last night, while they were wandering the corridors, and discovered that it saved them ten minutes to the Charms class.
Once they were a reasonable distance away, Ginny said, "That was brilliant!" and burst out laughing.
He joined in. "Did you see their faces? My God, that was hilarious!"
Ginny nodded, too busy laughing to speak. They stayed there like that for a few minutes before they really needed to get to Charms. They reached almost as soon as the rest of the class. Professor Flitwick wasn't here yet, but he did notice that the Charms class was… different.
This classroom was longer than the Transfiguration room, but it was also much less wide. There was a huge pile of books on the Teacher's desk. There were two rows of six desks on either side of the teacher's desk. But none of the desks were facing the front of the classroom. Instead they were facing the walls opposite the side they were on (left faced right and vice-versa). The desks on the extreme right and left were also raised above the rest. For better visibility, Harry assumed.
There were windows above the desks nearest to the wall, and one large one behind the Teacher's desk, casting the room in a very good light.
They chose desks next to each other again, toward the front of the class this time. Soon, Professor Flitwick entered the class and- due to his short height- climbed on top of the pile of books
"Welcome to Charms" He said, in a squeaky voice. "I am Professor Filius Flitwick, and I will be your teacher for the subject. Before we start today's class, can anyone tell me- in your own words- what a Charm is?"
Harry and Ginny immediately put their hands up, as did most Wizard raised children. Professor Flitwick called on Ginny.
"A charm" she said, "is a spell that alters an object without changing its essential nature"
"Excellent," Professor Flitwick said. "Take five points Miss Weasley"
"Now" he continued. "For this week and the next, we shall practice the art of Levitation. The wand movement is a swish and flick motion, like so" He demonstrated the wand movement for the spell with deliberately slow motions. Harry already knew this one. He hadn't learned the spell, but he did know that this was the spell that Professor Dumbledore had used when introducing him to Magic.
"Now everyone draw out your wands, and perform after me: Swish and Flick"
For the next five minutes Professor Flitwick kept going from desk to desk, correcting or praising every student. Harry was told he flicked a little too fast. Ginny's was pretty much perfect aside from the fact that her swish was too drawn out. That was fixed pretty much immediately.
"Now put away your wands, and repeat after me: Wingardium Leviosa. That is the incantation for the spell. Do not use a different incantation with the intent of Levitation. It will end disastrously" He said, once the class had repeated his words.
He spent another ten minutes correcting the students' pronunciations before, flicking his wand and causing feathers to come out of it and arrange themselves on the students' desks, one on each. Then he told them to practice the spell. Cries of Wingardium Leviosa were heard throughout the room. Ginny tapped her finger on his arm, and he turned to look at her.
'Watch' she mouthed to him
Harry nodded and saw as she swished and flicked her wand and her feather started floating.
It took him a second to realize she'd done it non-verbally.
His jaw dropped. He knew she had been practicing it, but he didn't know she'd gotten it. Though he shouldn't have been too surprised, they did share a wand core and his core had helped him a lot in Silent Magic.
"Look! Miss Weasley has done it!" Professor Flitwick cried. Everyone had already stopped trying and were now staring at her. "Take 20 points for being the first to achieve the spell. Can you do it again? For the class?"
Ginny nodded, canceled her spell, and did the spell silently again.
Needless to say, Professor Flitwick was impressed, and gave her twenty points for it.
Harry had done the spell second in the class- on his third try- earning him fifteen points. This time Professor Flitwick did notice his silent spell, and gave him twenty more points for that.
For the rest of the class, Professor Flitwick had the two of them try to levitate heavier and heavier objects. It went from a feather to a pencil that Harry carried with him (He wouldn't use a quill) to a pebble to a rock and so on and so forth. By the end of the lesson Harry and Ginny could lift the Teacher's desk with their wands. There was no homework because every student was at least able to lift their feathers.
This type of Levitation was different from the Wandless one, though, it was obvious to see. He was expecting to have greater success with this since he'd been lifting heavier objects like the broken slide at the Park at Little Whinging for ages. He used to do it as a test, and that was easier and faster for him. So, he didn't think he'd be using this spell too much.
"That was good don't you think?" Ginny asked him, after the class had ended. They had an hour long break for lunch now, and they were headed to the Great Hall.
He just shrugged "It was. Professor Flitwick's a good teacher, but I still don't think I'll be using that Levitation spell much"
She furrowed her brow. "Why not?"
"The Wandless way is easier," he replied. Not caring who heard him. He wasn't going to hide his power, but he hadn't got a chance to use it without coming off as a show-off.
She nodded in understanding. He'd given her a brief summary on everything he knew about Wandless Magic. He wasn't an expert by any means, but he did know a lot.
Lunch was… interesting. The glares toward him had lessened from his yearmates somewhat, but they were still staring at him like he was an animal in a zoo. He was more than content to ignore it, but Ginny was getting uncomfortable. It lessened a little when a first year Slytherin named Devon Lennox came to them for Charms and Transfiguration advice respectively.
Both of them were shocked to learn that Devon was a Muggleborn. That was also the reason Draco Malfoy had backed off of Harry yesterday, he was too busy bullying Devon. Harry mentally vowed to have Devon's back if he ever needed it.
Defence Against the Dark Arts was their next class, and Harry was very excited for it. It sounded like they would be going into all the dangerous creatures and curses and how to counter them. Something Harry wanted to learn since he read the text.
Unfortunately, it turned out to be a huge disappointment. Professor Quirrel was boring, he kept stuttering nervously, and he looked at the students fearfully as though they would attack him. Harry had tuned out of his explanation fifteen seconds into the class. He didn't even teach them anything, just told them to read the text.
Ginny had managed to pay attention, somewhat. She caught him up on what the professor had explained in the thirty minute break they got before every class (It was a half an hour break to account for students getting lost in the castle).
Potions on the other hand, was far more enjoyable. Professor Dainelle Trent was a great teacher, patiently explaining exactly why certain ingredients needed to be cut a certain way, and what effects it would achieve when doing so, what was the difference between animal related and plant related ingredients. She then asked them to take notes about all of it.
"Wait a minute please" She said to all of them, "Your homework for today is to read through the notes I made you take. Read through them thoroughly and carefully as they will help you in the next class, and in your future years. You may go now."
Harry and Ginny lagged behind the others once they were out. "That was so much better than DADA," Harry said.
"Not gonna argue with you there." Ginny said. "Do you have any more classes?"
Harry shook his head. "I'm gonna go to the Library and do the Potions homework, you wanna join?"
Ginny nodded "I'm not staying for long though. I'm knackered. Exploring last night wasn't a good idea."
"But you're willing to do it again?" Harry asked with a grin.
Ginny rolled her eyes but grinned back "Of course I am"
A/N 2: So that's another chapter finished. I'm sorry if this one was a little boring but I wanted to show the changes and everything else that happens.
Also, I've gone back and taken out the Grade system (The one that measures the difficulty of a spell). I don't think I can be as consistent with it as I would like to be.
The next chapter will have some more of this unfortunately, but the ones after that will have some action. First Year will end on Chapter 10. I hope I can make Year 2 different enough for it to be interesting. Same with Year 3. But you can expect a lot of the good stuff from Year 5 and onwards. Especially the Post-Hogwarts chapters. I'm really excited to write those.
I think I'm going to make Year 2 a little longer than this one since there's more I can add there. I know most people don't like reading about 11 or 12 year old children running around and having adventures but there are changes I had to do, otherwise I would've started at Year 5.
As for why Harry and Ginny haven't been turned in for practicing Magic outside Hogwarts:
Doing Magic in the presence of Adult Wizards is completely acceptable and legal in my universe. This will be mentioned in the next chapter, but for now, I'm just leaving this here.
