"I'm really sorry Charlie. We all knew how excited you were to spend more time with Isabella."
I pulled off the sincerity I was aiming for, even though to me she sounded like a grade A brat. Charlie spent the last three months chattering non stop to everyone who would listen about how his beloved daughter was finally over her aversion to the town he loved so much. Only for her to change her mind at the last second and rip his heart out of his chest all over again.
My dad, Harry Clearwater, has been best friends with Police Chief Charlie Swan my entire life and then some. When Charlie called and told their other best friend, Billy Black, that he wouldn't be needing to buy the old truck after all the news spread fast. The old men may be gruff but I watched, warm and fuzzy inside, while they sat at my dining room table mapping out a whole trail to a new fishing spot for their sad buddy. They had spent several hours before that calling around the reservation in their search for leads on hot spots they hadn't stumbled on themselves somehow in the last 30 years. When they were done they insisted that I come up with them to bring Charlie his favorite homemade fish fry and tell him about their plans. I was happy to tag along and see if their efforts would in fact cheer him up.
So far I was not convinced.
Charlie smiled at me but it didn't touch his eyes. They remained dull and unbearably sad. The men didn't notice this though, that much was clear to me. They had settled into their familiar spots in the small living room and were focused on a football game. It was time to take matters into my own hands, and I had the perfect idea.
"You know Charlie I graduate this year and I could use some help with my college applications. They want an essay about hometown heroes and who better to write about than our very own Chief of Police."
Billy and my dad both looked at me now with eyebrows raised, but I quickly shot them a look and they refocused their attention on the TV.
He perked up a bit, sitting up straighter in his seat with pride. "Uhm yeah I don't see why not. How can I help? You want to interview me or something?"
"I was kind of thinking of a tag along? Maybe I could come to work with you on Friday?"
He chuckled softly, "It's actually called a ride along. Don't you have school though?"
"Seniors who aren't falling behind don't have school on Fridays on the Rez, a lot of us have part time jobs on the weekends."
"Yeah but not miss lazy bones over here." My dad scoffed, rolling his eyes. "Put her to work Charlie, you'll be doing me a favor."
I stuck my tongue out at him and then turned back to Charlie with a grin. "So? Can I?"
He laughed and nodded, this time his smile reached his eyes and I considered that a success. "Okay kid. I'll pick you up bright and early Friday morning."
Ugh. Must being nice always have consequences?
