Leah-

Going to find Sam. Call me as soon as Emily gets out of surgery.

I typed out to my mother and pressed send. I knew she wouldn't mind my absence, she would be just as curious for Sam's side of the story as I was.

Edward's hand smacked down hard into the steering wheel, startling me.

"Damn it Alice! How is that possible?" Edward said angrily towards Alice in the back seat, before glancing over at me and relaxing again slightly. I held my hand out towards him and he took it, kissing my wrist once.

"What's going on Edward?" I whispered when Alice didn't say anything.

He sighed and shook his head. "It's hard to explain but basically not all… vampires-" He stumbled over the word like it made him uncomfortable, "-can read minds. That talent is specific only to me. Most can't do anything extra like that at all. But Alice, she has visions." I looked back at Alice and she smiled coyly.

Edward continued. "The future is fickle and confusing, always changing based around people's choices as they make them. It's not an exact science and things do fall through the cracks." He turned suddenly onto a long dirt road nestled discreetly between two rows of tall moss covered trees. His speed barely decreased and the sudden jolt sent me flying almost completely into his lap. He smirked as I righted myself and I smacked his shoulder.

"But never like this." Alice said. "For some reason Edward's future, and yours and all of ours for that matter, keep disappearing. And we don't know why."

My eyes widened as understanding dawned on me. "Wait, does that mean we're going to die?" I asked, looking at Edward. My eyes darted around the car next in a futile attempt at finding the danger so I could jump in front of it before it could get to him. He squeezed my hand reassuringly.

"Leah, I swear I will never let anything hurt you." He urged, having clearly misunderstood my fear.

"I'm actually more worried about you. I can take care of myself." I said stubbornly, my chin raised slightly. He and Alice both laughed and I rolled my eyes.

A large white house covered in bright open windows suddenly appeared in front of the Volvo. Edward parked in a spot that was clearly his and he and Alice both climbed out of the car while I sat, mouth agape, staring up at the beautiful house. House probably wasn't a good enough word; this was a fricken mansion.

Edward opened my door for me and I stumbled out. "Holy crap." I said breathlessly, still gawking.

Edward chuckled again and I looked around for Alice but she was already gone. He reached out for my hand and I wrapped it in his easily, letting him guide me towards the front porch steps. When we got to the bottom of them he stopped.

"I don't think we are going to be able to avoid the black spot in Alice's visions. I would have left if I thought it would have kept you safe but your future would have just gone black alone and that is unacceptable. Whatever it is, it's coming for you. This is the only place I feel I can protect you."

My breath hitched in fear, and he once again misunderstood. His hands came up to cradle my face, his cool lips pressed against my forehead. "You're going to be okay, I promise." He swore fiercely against my skin.

I shook my head. "It's not me I'm worried about. You shouldn't have brought me here Edward. I can't put you and your entire family in danger." I pulled back to look at him and he was staring at me the same way Sam had stared at Emily on the beach, like a blind man given the gift of sight after a lifetime in the darkness. His lips came down hard on mine and his long fingers twisted into my hair.

"You're amazing." He said breathlessly once the kiss was over. I smiled and unraveled myself gently from his hold.

"I'm leaving." I said firmly. Before he could respond Alice came bursting through the front door.

"It's almost time!" She yelled and Edward snarled, wrapping one arm around my waist and pulling me into his side before launching us both onto the porch. Alice stood beside him, and several other people I didn't recognize filed in line beside Alice, creating a united front with me in the back corner partially blocked by Edward. I tried to break free and rush out in front of them all but Edward held me in place.

A loud roar came from deep within the black forest lining their home. I squinted into the darkness searching desperately to find the source. Edward gasped and a few seconds later a hulking man with dark curly hair standing on the other side of Alice let out a low whistle.

I heard wild snarling and gnashing teeth and tried even harder to get out from around Edward. His grip on me was immovable as he fell protectively into a predatory crouch. His own answering snarls came bursting out of his chest and for a wild second I had the realization that he looked like a vampire to me for the first time since knowing him.

I saw his eyes first, glowing and furious, focused directly on me. As he barreled towards us Edward's arm came forward so he could use them both defensively and I seized the opportunity to run out from around him, raising my own arms and cringing in preparation. Instead of crashing into me head first the wolf dug his paws deep into the ground, skidding to a stop inches from my trembling body. I swallowed my fear and forced my eyes open before lowering my arms and curling my hands into fists.

"Sam Uley. I know that's you. Drop this bullshit vicious dog act and face me like a man!" I commanded, looking right into his bright eyes. They truly weren't all that different from Sam's, and I felt even more confident as I stared into them that this was a fight I could win.

He huffed and barked once before backing up slowly toward the forest where he had emerged. Once he reached the edge he transformed back into a man right in front of my eyes, never turning his back on the Cullens. His familiar naked body looked no different to me than it always had, but everything was different now. I knew Edward was furious, could feel the anger rolling off of him in waves lapping against my back. I wanted to flash him an apologetic look but everyone was staring at me expectantly.

"Why are you here Sam?" I asked sharply.

"To protect you. To kill that leech for even looking at you." He snapped, his entire body trembling. He took a step back and closed his eyes, taking a deep breath before opening them again.

"Leah why the fuck are you here?" He asked snidely. He never used to talk to me like this, never used to lose his temper. This was Sam from the last two months, the one I barely recognized as the boy I grew up with. I didn't love this Sam, in fact I didn't even like him. He actually sort of scared me. Edward stepped forward towards me to eliminate the distance I had created between us and Sam glared daggers at him.

"Edward is my friend. Tell me what happened to Emily, how could you?!" I screamed.

His glare on Edward somehow intensified. "It's his fault. Your fault for hanging around with these freaks!"

"How can that even possibly be true?"

Sam didn't say anything so I looked at Edward. He understood immediately what I was asking him for.

"He caught my scent on your sweatshirt she was wearing and couldn't stop the phase. He tried to push Emily away but she was still too close-"

"STAY OUT OF MY HEAD!" Sam shouted.

"You need to leave Samuel Uley. Before you do something you regret, again. I understand you didn't mean to hurt your Emily but you are dangerously close to making the same mistake. Only this time we will be forced to stop you. Go now and know that Leah is in no danger here. She knows everything." Edward said through clenched teeth.

Sam couldn't hold it in any more, the black fur burst through his skin and he disappeared quickly into the maze of trees without looking back.

I turned to face Edward, Alice, and their other family members which I hadn't been introduced to yet and grinned at their shocked expressions.

"Told you I can take care of myself."
