Recognizing the figure that had pushed open the door Sophie pulled the hand holding the gun up and to the side. "What happened?" If Chris was here, it meant that something had happened to Ezra. It's the only reason Chris would know she was here. She had known something was wrong for hours she just hadn't been able to do anything about it.

Chris shut the door behind him and reached over to take the gun from her. "Henderson." Frowning at the look of panic that crossed Sophie's face he walked through the living room and quickly searched the rest of the condo. "Ezra's alive. Gun shot wound to the shoulder. They're keeping him sedated because of what is hopefully just a bad concussion."

Sophie frowned as she processed what Chris had said. "So where's Henderson now?"

"We don't know…which is why you're not staying here." Chris stopped in front of her. "When's the last time you talked to Ezra?"

Sophie reached down and grabbed her phone. She hadn't slept much last night and had been dressed and pacing the length of the condo since early this morning. "He texted me last night when he and Vin headed to check on something. He said he'd more than likely be late…just not this late." She turned to look at him. "How's Vin?"

"Missing."

Sophie frown deepened. "Then why are you here?"

"Trust me, I asked myself that repeatedly on the way over here. Get your stuff and let's go." Chris slipped his phone out of his pocket and looked at the text from Buck. After looking at an aerial of where Ezra had been found, JD had figured out that they would've had to have followed their suspect out his back door. They had searched that way last night but hadn't come up with much. Maybe in the light of day they'd have more luck. Chris looked back up at Sophie as she walked out of the bedroom with a bag. He watched her reach down to pick up an iPad off the table and drop it into the bag. "I'm parking you at the hospital with Ezra." He held up the gun he had taken from her. "Do you actually know how to use this?"

"Yes." Sophie took the gun from him as he shoved it back into her hands. Making sure the safety was on, she slipped it into her bag and followed him out the door.

She hadn't expected much conversation from Chris. Her short stay at his ranch had taught her that. But, the cold silence was a little more than she could handle. "Why'd you come?"

Chris glanced in his side view mirror as he merged onto the interstate to take him back to the hospital. "He'd want you protected." Looking over at her her he couldn't help but to add to his statement. "Of course you already would have been if you had stayed in Louisiana as planned."

Sophie debated her response. Now was not the time to get into this. "How much danger do you think he's actually in?"

"If Henderson knows he's alive he'll come after him. With any luck he thinks Ezra's dead. Nathan's there now and there are guards posted but…"

"But you're not sure you trust them. Is it Albuquerque PD?" Sophie ran through what Ezra had told her. None of them thought ABD had been completely cleared so the fact that was who was protecting him was troublesome.

"I'm working on getting someone I do trust here. Meanwhile, keep the gun nearby and do not let him out of your sight." Chris glanced over at her. "Put this number into your phone. 303…". Chris stopped talking when she stopped typing numbers in.

Sophie looked over at Chris, recognizing the Denver area code. "I already have your number,". She held up the cell phone. "I have Ezra's, his friend Remy's number, and yours. With instructions to call you if I ever didn't hear from him for 24 hours." She put the phone back in her lap. "He had another six hours."

Chris frowned and focused on the road. "Going forward that needs to be more like 4 hours not 24."

Sophie nodded and looked out the window. After a moment, she glanced back at Chris. "He wants to trust you, he just doesn't know how."

"I told him not to lie to me and this was a pretty big lie." Chris gripped the steering wheel as he turned into the hospital parking lot.

"I know…but he lied because of me. Blame me, not him." Sophie knew the argument would fall on deaf ears.

"Ezra's a big boy. He knew exactly what he was doing." Navigating to the rear of the hospital, he parked in the shadows of the service entrance. Sending a quick text, he looked over at Sophie. "You can't go in the main entrance. This should keep you under anyone's radar." He looked over as a door opened and a woman in scrubs walked out with another set of scrubs in her hands. Chris got out of the jeep and walked towards her. "Thanks Missy." Taking the scrubs from her and handed them to Sophie. Turning slightly so she could put them over the leggings and t-shirt she had on, he glanced over at Missy. "Any issue getting us in this way?"

Missy shook her head. "I can badge you in. He's up on six. The stairwell will take you up there. His room is four down on the right."

Sophie pulled the top over her head. "Why do you know that?"

"They assigned him to my rotation once he wakes up. They want him to start therapy on his shoulder as soon as he can so he doesn't lose his range of motion." Missy pulled her badge out. "Ready?"

Sophie smiled at Missy when she nodded to them as they made their way to the stairs. She figured Nathan wouldn't be staying once she got there. They needed to find Vin and could probably use all the help they could get. Following Chris up the stairs she focused on the steps, counting them in her head as she went up them. She and Ezra had both known that eventually the rest of them would find out, she jus hadn't counted on it being this way.

Slightly out of breath by the time they reached the sixth floor, Sophie followed Chris down the hall. The police officer outside the door didn't even give her a second look as she followed Chris. She couldn't decide if it was because of who she was with or if it was because that particular officer wasn't overly invested in his current assignment. Shutting the door behind her, she froze as her eyes landed on the hospital bed. She thought she had prepared herself for the condition Ezra was in but she realized the second her eyes landed on him that she hadn't.

"Any word on Vin?" Nathan walked towards Chris as he walked into the room. He had only glanced at the woman that had accompanied him but paused and looked again. "Sophie?"

"It's a long story. How is he?" Chris crossed his arms and watched Sophie walk past him. He knew she wasn't tied in with Reyes. Joplin trying to kill her had pretty much solidified that in everyone's mind. But, he was a little surprised at how shaken she appeared at seeing Ezra. She covered it well, but the pause by the door had spoken volumes.

"Small fracture. They're checking for cerebrospinal fluid leaks but so far he's clear." Nathan looked back at Sophie before turning back to Chris. "Bullet didn't hit anything other than muscle."

Chris nodded. He got the feeling Ezra had gotten incredibly lucky. "When do they think he'll wake up?"

"They're cutting back on the sedation now that they know they shouldn't have to operate again but it's still going to be a while." Nathan looked back at Sophie again. He had zero idea how she had gotten here. There was no way she had gotten here this quickly from Louisiana. But, now was not the time to figure it out. "They have any luck finding Vin?"

Chris shook his head. "I told Buck we'd meet him." He turned and looked at Sophie who was settling into the chair next to Ezra's bed. "Sophie…"

"I know. Call you when he wakes up, keep you posted otherwise, shoot anyone that tries to hurt him." She tucked her legs under her. "Let me know when you find Vin and when Henderson is dealt with."

Chris appreciated the direct response. Ezra could learn a thing or two. "I'll let you know when I get someone I trust here."

Sixteen Hours Earlier

Vin dove behind a boulder on the side of the path. Looking over, he saw Ezra had done the same. Pulling his phone out of his pocket he realized Ezra was doing the same. "I've got no cell service."

"Same here." Ezra scanned the terrain behind Vin. The shot had definitely come from that direction. "Are you thinking this is Henderson?" They all knew he was still out there and they had been waiting for him to make a move on one of them. Ezra actually felt a certain amount of relief that he was finally showing himself.

Vin had turned to look behind him. He was covered for now, but the shot had come in that direction which meant they probably wouldn't be safe for long. "Seems likely." He had read Henderson's file. Ex-Seal, expert marksman. He definitely could have made the shot that had just killed their suspect. "We're sitting ducks out here."

"I know." Ezra scanned their options. Vin was closer to tree cover. Ezra's own path had a decent amount of rocky coverage but nothing that would allow him to lose Henderson. He glanced back the way they came. Neither one of them could safely retreat in that direction. There was too much open area. "Thoughts on how we're getting out of this?"

"Yeah, but you ain't gonna like it." Vin kept his eyes skimming the forested area behind him. He needed to know where Henderson was but he doubted the man would risk another shot unless he thought he had a chance of hitting his target.

"I'm not thrilled with our current situation so I'm open to options." Ezra thought he knew what Vin was thinking and he definitely thought it was going to be a miracle if they got out of this unscathed.

Vin turned towards Ezra. If Henderson had a scope, it was possible he'd be able to tell what he was saying to Ezra. He had certainly done it himself on more than one occasion. "When I give you the signal, head towards the canyon. The path you're on should start curving away from the canyon and towards a river. It gets a little rocky so be careful. I'll work my way behind him."

Ezra looked at the path ahead of him. "I don't think I can express how much I dislike this plan. In fact dislike probably isn't a strong enough word…"

"Ezra…would you rather try to track the ex-Navy Seal or leave it to the ex-Army Ranger?" Vin knew it came out with a little more snark than he intended. But, trying to make Ezra feel better about the situation was pretty far down on his list right now. He had done some hiking along the canyon ridge over the last couple months so he thought he was remembering the terrain correctly. "Just keep your head down."

"Fine." Ezra ground the word out. He knew there really wasn't another option.

Vin shifted further into the brush covered area. "Count to 30 and go." All he needed was to be able to gauge where Henderson was so with any luck, he'd fire on Ezra when he started moving. And with hopefully more luck, Ezra could avoid getting shot. Then, all Vin had to do was track someone who had probably more training than he did and take him down. All while making sure he didn't kill himself on the canyon incline and keeping Ezra alive. This was about to get very messy and even more dangerous.
