Sophie leaned forward and watched Ezra. A nurse had come in a little while ago to check on him. She got the feeling that the nurse had been a little surprised he was starting to wake up. Although 'wake up' was a really loose term. It was more like he was just restless. Still, it was probably a good sign. She glanced down at her phone as it buzzed. She expected another text from Chris or Nathan, but there wasn't a name attached to the number. She smiled as she read the text. Clicking on the message she saved JD's number in her contacts. Looking back over at Ezra she realized he was squeezing his eyes shut. "Hey…Ezra?"

"It's too bright."

Standing up she walked over to the door and flipped the light switch turning off the overhead lights. "Any better?" She walked back over to the bed and leaned over. It was bright enough outside that she could still see without a problem. "Need me to shut the blinds?"

Ezra squinted against the light as he tried to focus on his surroundings. Blurry didn't begin to describe his vision right now. "What happened?"

"What do you remember?" Sophie reached over and pushed the call button for the nurse. When they had come in to check on him they had asked her to let them know when he was awake. She looked back down at him, trying to gauge how he was. At this point, she had been at the hospital for a couple hours and had managed to spend a large portion of the time googling gun shot wounds and head injuries.

Blinking his eyes he tried to look around the room and focus on his surroundings but wasn't having much success. He was obviously in a hospital but he had no idea how he got there or even why Sophie was there. Fleeting memories trickled through his mind. "Henderson." He looked over at Sophie and tried to force his eyes to focus on her. It worked for a moment but then the world became blurry again. "Getting shot. Why does my head hurt?"

"You have a skull fracture. Nathan said it was a small one and they didn't think there will be any long term problems." She reached over and grabbed his hand as he instinctively reached up. "Back of your head. Leave everything alone."

Ezra frowned as he let her pull his hand down. "Skull fracture? Getting shot I remember. But that was my shoulder."

Sophie sighed and perched on the edge of the chair. "According to Google, it's not abnormal for you not to remember." She looked up as the door opened and two nurses entered. "I think they're going to unhook you from some of this. I'm moving out of the way but just to the other side of the room." She stood up and kissed his cheek before moving out of the way. Grabbing her phone she texted Chris to let him know Ezra was actually awake now but didn't remember much yet. Not getting a quick response, she slid her phone into a pocket and watched the nurses. They were remarkably quick and efficient. The door pushed open again and an orderly brought in a wheelchair. One of the nurses turned and walked towards her. "They want to take him back to imaging again now that he's awake."

Sophie nodded and walked back over to Ezra. The had managed to move him into a seated position. She didn't miss the death grip he had on the side of the bed with the hand that wasn't bound by a sling. "I did bring you actual clothes." She glanced over at the nurse. Receiving a shrug and a nod, she reached down and picked up her bag. Seeing the gun on top, she paused for a moment before sliding it aside and grabbing Ezra's clothes.

What should have taken a couple seconds took way longer than Sophie anticipated, but she eventually had him comfortable enough to transfer into the wheelchair. "You ready?"

His head and shoulder hurt so shrugging and nodding were out of the question. So was apparently talking so he simply pushed himself up with his hand and allowed the orderly and nurse to maneuver him into the wheelchair.

Sophie started to follow until her eyes landed on the officer at the door watching. Turning around, she slid the gun out of the bag and tucked it into the waistband of her leggings. It looked so much easier in the movies. The gun was uncomfortable and heavy but so was that feeling in the pit of her stomach. Forcing a smile she walked past the guard who was trailing behind and caught up to Ezra.

When they got to imaging, Sophie watched them situate Ezra. "I'll be in the other room." Since they were doing an MRI, she knew it would be a while. She stopped by the door leading out of the MRI room to make sure he was good before turning to retreat to the room next to it. As she turned she saw the officer waiting in the hallway. Her intention had been to try to get the technicians to let her watch from their control room. Now, she realized it wasn't the image of Ezra's brain she was most concerned about.

Walking into the room, she stopped just inside the door. Leaning against the door opening, she could see the officer in the hallway as well as the window that allowed the technicians to monitor their patient. Crossing her arms she settled into a rhythm of shifting her eyes between the monitors, the MRI machine, and the officer in the hallway.

Fifteen minutes into the scan, the technician stood up. "I'll be back. I want to check with the doctor and make sure I'm getting the right areas."

Sophie nodded as he left. Glancing back at the officer she saw him shift slightly as the technician retreated down the hall. His hand shifted to his side and loosen his weapon. She had brought the gun because she was worried that something like this would happen but she honestly hadn't thought something like this would actually happen. She was moving on instinct before the officer had finished opening the door.

Catching the door as it started to close behind the officer, he turned as her hand slammed against it. As he raised the gun to fire at her, she pulled the trigger. She was pretty sure she hadn't bothered to aim because the shot went way left. She probably wouldn't have hit him regardless. But it served the purpose of distracting him and notifying Ezra that there was a problem and force him into moving. She had already darted to the other side of the MRI machine and felt Ezra yank her against an alcove in the wall. They were currently blocked by the machine but they also had no means of escape. All the officer had to do was make his way around the machine and he'd have a clear shot.

"Give me the gun." Ezra turned to look around the edge of the alcove wall. Even the slight movement sent a wave of pain through his head. The officer was using the equipment as a shield. Even if he could see straight it wasn't like he had a shot.

"Can you actually see what you're shooting at?" Sophie leaned forward to see if she could see the officer only to have Ezra push her back as the officer opened fire again. At least his reaction time was ok.

Taking the gun out of her hand he glanced over again. Before he could even think about firing, he heard a series of shots from multiple guns.

"Clear."

"Clear."

Sophie looked around Ezra, recognizing one of the men that had entered the room, she pushed herself up and ran over to the other side of the room. Sliding onto her knees next to the officer, she looked down at him. Blood was streaming out of multiple wounds. "Where's Henderson!"

The man coughed as blood streamed out of his mouth. "Henderson didn't send me…"

Ramos leaned down and pulled Sophie to her feet. "I need to get you two out of here now." He looked over at Hawkins. "Didn't think you were coming. How'd you know where we were?"

Dale Hawkins shrugged. "I just followed the sound of gunfire. Albuquerque isn't that exciting. I figured it had to be whatever Larabee was messed up in."

Fourteen Hours Earlier

Vin looked at the crushed leaves on the path in front of him. He was fairly certain he was on Henderson's trail unless a large bear had come through here. Deciding to go with it being Henderson, he rose to his feet and continued following the faint signs that someone had come this way. Last time he had heard shots had been about thirty minutes ago. There was something almost comforting about hearing the shots. It gave him something else to follow but more importantly it meant that Ezra was probably still alive. It was when he went long periods of time without hearing shots that he worried. Seeing the edge of the wooded area ahead of him, he slowed. The sky was dimming where only a few rays of sunlight remained. Thankfully, they caught the reflection of Henderson's scope. The beacon was brief but more than enough for Vin to know exactly where his quarry was and what path he needed to take in order to reach him.

A/N: Anyone who's seen Navy Seals (Michael Biehn) should recognize Hawkins and Ramos. They were two of the four surviving seal team members at the end of the movie (at least I'm 99% sure Ramos is still alive…it's been a while since I've seen it and I can't find somewhere that's streaming it to check). I typically prefer using existing characters but sometimes you just don't get enough to work with so you've got to borrow!
