After she passed away when he was 12, he gave up on movie acting and studied stage acting. He had a very compassionate relationship with his grandfather, a Vietnam War veteran, and poet. He used to tell him stories about his time during the Vietnam War. Lance described him as his "number one favorite storyteller". On his 16th birthday, his grandfather gave him his old manual typewriter. He told him that "This is what real writers write. And you are going to be a real writer".
- Personal relationships

After being caught with his once new girlfriend Becky, he only lived with her for about two months. While working at the bakery, he met Meg, a single mother of two children: Zachary and Emily. She took him under her wing and taught him how to become a better person. Sometime afterward, he bumped into Ash and was very surprised to see her after a year. After being beaten up by Meg's ex-husband, Clint, Lance, and Ash became best friends.

Lance had suffered from clinical depression. Struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction. One night, after leaving the bar, he took a late-night drive through the street very drunk. He flipped the car over and his head was bleeding. As he was about to light a cigarette, he was stopped by Meg from igniting the lighter. Because without realizing it, gas was dripping inside the car. Meg saved his life. A day later, Lance wept in tears. Meg comforted him. Afterward, he was sent into rehab. Although, he sometimes occasionally smokes cigarettes and yet he describes himself as a heavy smoker.
