-Prologue-

Today was a sad day. The DMMORPG Yggdrasil was finally closing it's servers for good, and many of the players that remained found themselves staying for the last few hours with their friends and partners in the guilds and lands they ruled and created. For many of the players, this game had taken not just their time, but more money than many would like to admit, and saying goodbye was quite hard for them. After all, except for the wealthy few who lived in the cleaner parts of the Earth which were few and far between, the average person lived in a polluted megacity hellhole. Games and the world wide web took up much of their lives.

The air was toxic to breathe. The water was almost completely undrinkable without lots of filtration, and there was almost no nature that could survive under the constantly cloudy skies and toxic land.

This was how life was for the majority, and many had come to accept that the world was no longer what it used to be. Even America was not safe from this blight on the land, and while there were more clean pockets on the nation's soil than in small island nations like Japan, over eighty percent of the population were already destitute.

James Wilson was an American who was somewhere in the middle class, which by now was a nice way of saying barely better off than the upper bottom of the economic totem pole. He had an apartment in one of the megastructures that filled the land that was once Pittsburgh, however, almost every megacity looked identical with the massive buildings that dwarfed even the tallest skyscraper from the earlier days.

His apartment had four rooms. A bedroom with one bed. He had a bathroom with a shower, sink, and toilet. A kitchen, and a living and dining room. The bedroom and living room looked out at the smoggy and dark city that really wasn't very nice to see. However, it was better than a room with no windows at all. James knew firsthand what living in a windowless apartment would do to someone's psyche, and he didn't want to subject himself to that any more.

Since the megastructures were so large, they had their own schools, stores, offices, clubs, and various other amenities that made going outside your megastructure something you would rarely do.

James Wilson was one of the many men that owned various computer and gaming devices that one would reasonably own for gaming and entertainment in the current year. After his work as a server room technician in the morning, he had the rest of the day free. Given the importance of the servers, he was paid quite well for his work. With this money, he could live a comfortable life relative to the people who lived on the lower floors of the megastructure which were of quite lower quality than the higher floors.

James Wilson was an avid RTS, MMO, and Space game player in his free time and spent quite a lot of time, energy, and money on his various games. One of the games he spent a large amount of time in, thanks to the extreme customization options and freedom of action was Yggdrasil. Now, like many games before it, and likely many games in the future, it was shutting down.

Thankfully for him, he didn't have too much to come to, as him and his guild always maintained a small but powerful presence in the deep space between the realms of Yggdrasil. Thanks to the 'Depth of the Void' expansion, guilds and lands could be purchased and created in the deep space between the worlds of Yggdrasil. As such, him and seven others created a guild that would work in a giant alliance of spacefaring traders and mercenaries.

Lying down in his pod that limited his movement while he was in the Dive technology as to prevent injuries, He powered on his neural interface and began his dive into the fantastic worlds of Yggdrasil.

However, this was his final dive. Due to a clerical error on the death department of this galaxy cluster, his soul was extracted from his body and brought up to the local God for their decision on his fate.

James found himself sitting on a comfortable cushioned chair in a warm light blue walled office. A man sat at a shiny wooden desk across from him that looked very much like a lawyer. He had light skin, a short head of red hair and light green eyes. On his chin was a well maintained goatee. He wore a black suit with a black tie and he was sorting through some papers before looking at James.

"Would you happen to be Karson Glenn by any chance?" he asked with a thick Scottish accent to James who shook his head.

"I'm afraid you have the wrong guy" James said while looking around the office.

"Are you sure? I'd be in a big mess for botching the reincarnation of humans yet again" The red haired man said shaking his head at his error.

"Where is this?" James asked, curious as to why he wasn't in his guild base.

"Ah, right. You're dead, and this is the realm of death for your local galaxy cluster" The red haired man informed James before going back to his papers and reading them over.

"Oh dear. You weren't supposed to die for another forty years. This is no good, I'll be fired for this" The red haired man said to James before looking up at him.

"This is very serious, so I will treat this with a fitting level of seriousness. I don't want to lose my status as a god, and you don't want to stay dead, so lets make a deal. I'll reincarnate you somewhere far away, with whatever powers or things you want, and in return, you stay quiet about my error okay?" the red haired god offered James, who accepted the deal.

"Great, now tell me what you want, and I'll get you set up. Nothing crazy like becoming a god yourself, but otherwise, go for it" the god explained, giving James a chance to explain what he wanted.

"I'll take my Yggdrasil avatar to use the abilities of my Yggdrasil game character, and the ability to create the mechanics and materials of the RTS games I play" James offered to which the god took a second to look through before nodding.

"That is acceptable. So long James Wilson. Go through the door behind you to your new life, and remember, keep quiet about this" The god said, motioning to the door behind James.

"Thank you!" James thanked the god, getting up and opening the door.

On the other side was an open field with forests all around. A blue cloudless sky with a warm summer sun shone down on him, overwhelming him completely. Stepping through, he found the doorway gone behind him, leaving him in the middle of a soft grassy field.

It was the first time that he had ever in his life felt the touch of grass and the clean air and sky around him in real life. All in all, it was overwhelming.

Thankfully, his character in Yggdrasil wore a visor that was used for shielding him from bright lights, blindness, and was used for comms. Since the sun was very strong to him, as he was used to the low lights of earth and the megastructure, his visor came in good use.
